This customer and my install manager did miss each others call a few times but they spoke on Friday 10-2-15 and at the customer's request, the work was scheduled for 10-19-15. By this review, I'm assuming that we are to take the work off our schedule.

I needed to have my air ducts cleaned on short notice after a work crew cleaned up by sweeping dust from sanding texture off the walls into the ducts. I didn't want to run the air and spread the dust all over the house. Mid State managed to fit me in the day after I called, and even sent two crews to clean both systems. Workers were professional and efficient. Their method is to feed a long vacuum hose with a spinning brush on the end into the duct. The price was significantly less than the other estimate I received, and the only negative aspect was that they hard-sell their expensive, subscription-based air filters.

There are a number of problems with this company. Beware. 1) I signed up last year for their 'Club Membership' which gives you reduced price on any needed repairs and two inspections annually. First problem is that you have to remember to call them to schedule the inspections. If you do not do this, they will let the year go by and never come take care of your system. 2) They came out on 7/11/15 because my split system upstairs was not working. The technician replaced two capacitors and installed an extremely expensive new thermostat, the "only one he had on his truck". I was out of town and my wife was dealing with the technician. I got on the phone with him and asked him what caused the system to stop working, the failed capacitor or the defective thermostat? His reply, "both". Really? Both components failed simultaneously. Then I reminded him that his company replaced this capacitor less than 1 year ago and inquired if it was under warranty. He said it was the original capacitor and had never been replaced. When I got home 2 days later I pulled out my service records for the unit and sure enough, it was replaced 11 months earlier and was not the original unit as the technician insisted upon. In their defense, when I called the office they did reimburse me for this capacitor under warranty. 3) They came out on 8/22/15 to perform the annual inspection. This time they found a low refrigerant level in the upstairs unit. I asked why this was not discovered 1 month ago when the technician came out because that unit was not working. He did not have a response that made any sense at all. He also found more issue with my capacitors (the ones they just installed) and said they were going to fail soon. Based on my experiences with this company, their business model is to create fear in owner's minds and sell unnecessary services and overpriced parts. I have two engineering degrees but still do not know much about HVAC systems. However, when I have politely asked both technicians basic questions they are either a) offended or b) do not provide answers that make any logical sense or c) both. Avoid this company.

This is an exceptionally well run company with people that know what they're doing and operate with integrity. My upstairs electric AC unit was leaking badly and their was an incredible amount of moisture collecting inside of the utilty closet where it is located. Additionally, there was an large opening in the celiing of the closet heading up to the roof where part of the duct work to the AC unit ran. The size of the opening up to the hot air in the roof area combined with the coolness of the unit while running was creating a rainforest more or less in the closet. Not a good situation. Mid-state sent one of their certified repairmen out to assess the issue. While he arrived 45 minutes late vs. the window provided to me over the phone the previous day, the dispatcher did call ahead to let me know. So they handled that part professionally and that professionalism was common theme from then on out. The repairman provided me a detailed quote for repairing the unit and it was quite high, primarily because there was a lot of rust inside of the 10-year old unit and the coil had to be completely replaced. I then asked about the cost of replacing the unit completely. The repairman then immediately got on the phone with another guy at the company who handles new installation sales. He then handed the phone to me and he said he'd be over within an hour to have a look at the house and go over options with me. 45 minutes later he was there and 30 minutes after that I had all of the information I needed to make the right decision. While it was going to cost me around $2k more for a new unit, fixing a 10-year old out-of-warranty unit did not appeal to me in the least. Plus, Mid State offers 2 free inspections (fall and spring) for the first year post installation. So I went with the new unit. We scheduled the intallation for the following morning. I coudn't be there due to work commitments so I entrusted them with a key. Fast forward to the following afternoon and I came home to not just a new unit but a better installed unit: they went ahead and insulated/closed-off the opening from the inside of the HVAC closet to the roof. The new system runs perfectly.

Someone came out to diagnose why my AC wasn't cooling. It was determined that major work needed to be done, but given the age of the unit, it was suggested I consider a brand new unit, and I realized that was the best thing to do. Then a "Comfort Specialist" came out, reviewed my situation and recommended a new unit. I ended up paying $6400--that was on the LOW end. For all I know, that could be the average price to replace a unit today. My last unit--TRANE--lasted 18 years! I requested a TRANE to replace the old unit but was told the brand isn't really important, the actual piece of equipment is what I should be concerned about. Part of that $6400 was $400 to clean all my air vents. I thought that sounded a bit high, but the Comfort Specialist assured me that they would go into the attic and really clean everything. He even had me show him where the access was to be able to get in there for a thorough clean. As it turned out, they "cleaned" 4 of my 6 vents using an industrial type of vacuum and it took about 15 minutes to do the 4 vents. Before the guys left after installing the new unit, I asked them why I hadn't received a new thermostat I paid for and I was told, "the one you have looks new". When I said that I'd paid for a new one, the workman told me he could leave it for me...?!! But here's the kicker... NO FILTER. THEY DIDN'T LEAVE ANY FILTERS--NOT EVEN ONE! They told me what size to get and that I could go right up to Home Depot and get one...!!! Seriously??! $6400 later and they left my brand new unit running WITHOUT A FILTER??? So I called to express my concerns to the Comfort Specialist and he suggested that I call the owner, who I'd spoken with before I made the commitment to purchase. He didn't have the phone number but told me to call the office and they'd give it to me. I called the office and they said they don't give out his phone number but that he'd call me. The owner had someone call me. The guy was really nice, but did not take care of any of my concerns. To his credit, he'd left me a message a couple of days later and said he had something he wanted to bring by, but I didn't return his call right away and I never heard from him again. The good news is that my unit seems to be working just fine. I am a less-than-satisfied customer. The folks at MidState were all very nice and I would have loved to give them a great review, but they just don't deserve one.

I did not have confidence in the expertise that they sent. He seemed puzzled, it was just an inspection of my air conditioning unit. He couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. He said that there was something wrong with it, and there wasn't anything wrong with it to my knowledge. After a while he called the office and they came to the conclusion that I needed a new capacitor which, was close to $600 and he offered to replace the thermostat which, he could get to work for about $350. I told him that I wasn't prepared to pay that. I called someone else, and he said that my capacitor was fine. I did need a new thermostat and he did it for $50. I felt like I didn't get anything from them at all. I just did not trust him. Mid-States prices were terribly inflated. He came alone and the last time I hired Mid-State, I think two guys came. He came like an intern without a mentor. I would not recommend them. The big deal was a great price. He took the thermostat off the wall but, didn't put it back. I don't have time to be pursuing projects like this. I was dissatisfied. The reason why I chose this company was, they had all "A" plus ratings on Angie's List. I didn't have high expectations, that was the reason that I made the choice. I was taken back that the quality of service was bad quality. He was here on time and it was an average response. He wasn't rude or impolite, he wasn't well prepared. He was in uniform and was a polite person. He wasn't unprofessional.

Used the Spring cleaning promotion. Mid State arrived as scheduled and performed the maintenance under the watchful eye of my wife. The tech was willing to explain all the work he was performing. bOur upstairs A/C unit stopped producing cold air and was making a strange noise. A tech took a look and listened to the unit and then explained what he wanted to do. He told me the charges up front and let me know that if those things didn't fix the problem, he wouldn't charge me for them. Luckily, the first thing he did (add refrigerant) did work. We talked about how there might be a possible (and likely) small leak. He added a sealant with dye at no extra charge in the event they needed to come out again soon. After he was finished and the bill was paid for he took one last look and checked the temperature just to be extra sure that things were ok before he left. The tech was very friendly and knowledgeable. I was very satisfied with the visit and we haven't had any problems since. I've also already recommended them to friends who have had A/C troubles.

Air Conditioner was fine. However, the tech (Clay) said the wire to my unit was missing it sheath possibly due to grounds keeper getting close to unit with edger. He put tape around it which I appreciated. He recommended getting an electric float drain safety switch vice the one that's there now. Clay was very professional and respectful. I am seriously considering getting a maintenance plan with this company in the future because of: (1) this first visit there was no charge, (2) the tech's mannerism and I believe he was being truthful (3) and the kind customer service representative who called me prior to him coming to let me know he was on the way.

The AC was determined to have freon leak. I opted to have the technician refill with freon rather than replace system to see if we could buy time. He also recommended a chemical they can put in the system that helps to plug the leaks in the system. He was clear with me that it may not work and it would not be warrantied. It was about $800, which seemed very high for the work performed, but I was happy with their punctuality and getting it fixed quickly. Today (7 weeks later) the system is not working again. The reason is not a freon leak. If that was the case, I would be ok. I knew the risk I was taking. The reason is that the compressor died. Apparently the chemical that they use to help plug the leaks is very h****** the compressor. I was not told of that additional risk. Now, instead of replacing just part of the system, I am going to have to repair the whole thing. About $4,000. All-in-all, Mid-State is a very punctual, expensive company. However, the quality of their work I have to get a grade of "F" to. I would avoid unless you are in a real pickle.

Response from Mid-State Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing LLC
The A/C system at issue here uses the obsolete R22 refrigerant which is very expensive. The total bill for the refrigerant, the leak sealant and the diagnostic and leak search was $627. That's a lot of money to gamble on a 10 year old system but this customer elected to take that gamble. We have used this particular leak sealant in well over 1000 systems with no problems. We even use it with full blessing from the manufacturer in new systems that we install to reduce the chance of leaks. The compressor failed because it's a 10 year old system.

The service cost $561 to add freon and repair a leak in the coil. If we were told that it would have cost this much we would have elected to purchase a new heat pump system, which we had to do the next day. We gave them the opportunity to quote on the new system, but were forced to go with another company to help offset the service cost.
