Description of Work: Absolutely a terrible experience, both in terms of the effect on our lawn and their customer service: they ruined our lawn and their ineptness (or willful deceit) has made it extremely difficult to cancel their service. Here's the story: We had a healthy green lawn, but it was trampled and neglected following a housefire, trashing the grass over a period of months. We needed to get a handle on weeds and get the lawn back to looking good, so we hired Scott's for the full treatment (fertilizing, weeding and seeding/aeration, etc.) and did everything they recommended for a year. Their service was more or less monthly, about $30-40 a time, with aeration and overseeding that cost about $300. Instead of making forward progress, we ended up with a mud pit in the back yard -- no vegetation at all, so messy our kids and dog could not play out there -- needless to say, we were not pleased! In the front yard, the grass lived, but continued to be overrun with weeds. Along the way there were some bumps too -- like when we received a bill for seeding and aeration that had not been done! (They finally did come back out and do it... but it was late in the season and no new grass ever sprouted, despite careful tending and staying off the lawn for weeks.) In February, after keeping our family off the just-seeded lawn and then off the growing mud pit for more than three months, we called and canceled the service. We thought we were done with Scott's. I put down my own fertilizer and grass seed at the beginning of March and just before spring break, the lawn sprouted! With a forecast of many days of rain for our time on vacation, we confidently left town. Imagine how angry I was to come home from spring break and find a notice that Scott's -- who we had severed our relationship with a month before -- had been out and put weed-n-feed on my little grass sprouts during our vacation. I called again and was told that although their records indeed showed my request to cancel service, rather than canceling they had simply put the account "on hold," and then continued with the next service! Usually, grass that is a week or two old might be harmed by that such a treatment -- hence my fury about this -- but this treatment did nothing (ha! must have been the same thing we'd paid them to put on the front lawn for months with no effect!) During this second conversation with Scott's, we established several things: that our account was indeed canceled; that Scott's would never set foot on our property again; that they would take us off their solicitation list and put us on a do-not-call list; and that they would not charge us for the spring break service. At this point, I certainly thought I was done with Scott's! A month has gone by and this week I received a call from Scott's collections department, asking for payment for the spring break service. As it turns out, even though their internal records CONFIRM everything I explained above, they never forwarded this information to their accounting department. And their "do not call" list apparently is "only for two weeks" according to the person I spoke to. Even more galling, even though their own records corroborate my side of this story including the "no billing" part of it, they said I would have to give them cancellation confirmation numbers in order not to be billed! Fortunately I had these numbers... but at this point I feel I am being harassed by Scott's. A search of the web shows that many Scott's customers around the country report stories similar to ours. (My next door neighbor also told me Scott's was sued in California for spraying water on lawns while pretending to spray treatments -- I cannot confirm that, but it would not surprise me). Not only would I not recommend Scott's lawn service, I will no longer purchase their products, which I believe to have been either ineffective or too harsh for our lawn. I spent $40 on a bag of high quality grass seed and about $20 on a pre-seed fertilizer, both from Ace Hardware in Bearden, and so far, so good. Lawn is back and looking pretty good -- it wasn't optimal to plant the grass seed in the spring (it is recommended in the fall) but if we can keep it watered this summer I think we'll have a nice lawn once again -- no thanks to Scott's!
