Very well, very prompt, very reasonable and very high quality work.
Description of Work: David came out as soon as two days after looking at our porch and stairs and started the work. He ripped out the old porch/stairs and replaced it with trex. He did a wonderful job and now the porch/stairs look great and are much more secure and stable. He also hung a chandelier in the foyer and two outdoor lights all for a very reasonable price and high quality work. He is now working on my kitchen remodel. I highly recommend him for any kind of jobs, big or small.

It was a challenge to have a commitment from David on when the job would begin, and later when the job would finish. For this reason, we have given B's for responsiveness and punctuality. However, the final result and quality of the bathroom remodel was so fantastic, that it overshadowed all of the other criteria and results in an overall A rating for the job done. I have waited one year before writing this review, cautiously observing if there would be any issues following the remodel, such as leaking showers, tile issues, etc. I can tell you that we have not had one issue - David Hammond does excellent work that is right the first time. Things that went well: - attention to detail: excellent and meticulous tile work - craftsmanship: the vanity was custom made for us and is beautiful; you won't find one like it at Home Depot or anywhere else Things that we didn't expect: - we went into the job expecting a turn key remodel, but we were vague in the details of the original estimate. As a result we ended up managing and coordinating certain activities that we had not planned on doing. For example, finding a plumber and coordinating the plumbing work with the remodel work; finding all of the sink, shower and faucet hardware; finding a toilet; finding and installing the bathroom accessories like the towel rack and toilet paper holder (this wasn't written in the estimate); finding and installing the granite counter top for the vanity; - the communication between David and the plumber that we chose was lacking, and left us to mediate issues much more than we cared to do Overall, we are very happy with our new bathroom (in fact we love it), and Upstate Remodel exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: David had done good work for us before on a smaller job, so we decided to use him again for a complete bathroom remodel. We live in an older house in the North Main area, and we wanted to completely upgrade and modernize our bathroom. The work performed included: 1) Completely demolishing the existing bathroom down to the bare studs and installing a new subfloor. 2) Removing the existing tub and replacing it with a customized shower system (we did not replace the tub.) 3) Laying porcelain tile on the floor and walls of the shower up to the shower ceiling. 4) Incorporating a customized porcelain tile design on the main shower wall. 5) Installing Travertine tiles on the bathroom walls until mid wall height. 6) Installing electrical outlets to code, new vanity wiring, vanity lighting, and an exhaust fan/light combo. 7) Hanging new Sheetrock on the ceiling and walls. 8) Designing and building a custom wood vanity. 9) Painting of all Sheetrock walls and the ceiling.

David is meticulous in his work. He's very clean & well-organized. He'll be back to re-do the entire bathroom, because we loved the shower so much.

I was very disappointed in my first experience using an Angie's List provider. I e-mailed Upstate Remodel asking if they would be interested in doing a wainscoting job in my rental home in the U.S.. The owner did return my e-mail fairly quickly and indicated that he would be interested, but would prefer to speak by telephone rather than discuss the detais of the job by e-mail. Since I was calling from Canada, I told him that I would make the initial call and arranged to call him the next day at a specify time and he said that would be fine. When I attempted to reach him the next day at the agreed upon time, he did not answer and therefore I left a message and my telephone number. I did not get a call back, so the next day I attempted to call again and left another message asking him to return my call. He did not. A couple of days later, I received an e-mail from the individual and he indicated that he did not answer his phone as it came up with "unnown name" (this happens when you are calling from Canada). He was very polite in his response and did apologize for not answering his phone or returning my calls but indicated that if I called again, he would answer. However, after making two long distance calls and waiting for a response, I had found myself another contractor (sadly not through Angie's List) who called me back right away. I can not say what type of work this Company does but given this first experience, I would hesitate to contact this provider again in the future!
Description of Work: This Company did not perform any work for me since communication was an issue.

The job went well, especially helping us get the proper tiles for the look we wanted.
Description of Work: Upstate Remodeling (i.e. David Hammond) tiled our kitchen walls. He worked for half a day with the tiles we had purchased (and they were expensive) before declaring them defective and unusable. He took us to Lowes where he helped decide which tiles to buy and how they would be used. In short, David created the plan and executed it. The work is outstanding and we are thrilled with the final look. This is the third job David has done for us (kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors and drawer fronts were done a couple of months ago). I enthusiastically recommend David for almost any type of remodeling you are doing. His artistic touches really make a difference. I doubt that there is any kind of construction work he cannot do.

When I first contacted David it took a while to get him to come quote the project because of his busy schedule (which I presumed to be a good thing) and sense we were not in a particular rush, I didn't mind waiting. David spent an adequate amount of time examining the work area and deciding on what needed to be done in order to complete the project. He did not provide a quote on the spot, instead emailing it to us a day or so later. Again, I found this to be acceptable in that I felt he was spending the time he needed to provide a proper quote... I didn't want any "surprises". Each day that David worked in our home he cleaned his work area before leaving. He finished the job in the agreed upon time frame and the agreed upon price. It also helps that he is a super nice guy!
Description of Work: David tore out an existing gas log fire place with brick hearth and wood mantel and replaced it with a custom builtin entertainment unit. We picked out a picture of a unit we liked and David built it almost identical to the picture. He is detail oriented and offers his professional suggestions. We are extremely happy with his work. We wanted the unit to look substantial without being obtrusive. He did a great job.

The job went very well over all. David did not rush and spent time carefully measuring and preparing along all the steps of the job so as to avoid any mistake or waste of materials. He was very careful to clean up the sawdust throughout the day as he worked and was easy and patient with our many questions. The flush storage "bins" were his idea and they turned out very well. The cost of the job included his labor and all the materials for trim, joists, plywood and hardware, and also some electrical outlets added to the space. The bamboo flooring was not included in his fee as we paid for that separately. David was careful, thoughtful and creative - all traits you would want in someone who is doing work in your home! He was extremely knowledgeable about the materials used and incredibly proficient in how he used the many tools required for such a project. The end result was excellent.
Description of Work: We hired David Hammond of Piedmont Remodel to floor an unfinished storage area above the tray ceiling in our family room that would become an art/sewing space. The area consisted of an existing raised platform (formed by the upper part of the trey ceiling below it) and an 18-inch step down from the platform that extended 2-feet from the platform edge to the wall joists around the perimeter of the space (corresponding to the lower part of the trey ceiling beneath). David added additional joist support all around the perimeter of the space (16' x 17' rectangle). He then laid a thick plywood subfloor over the entire space, covering the platform and extending to the walls, and then laid a bamboo floor over that with baseboard trim. Under each of the three windows he created spring-supported doors (same bamboo used in the project) that are flush with the floor with pretty recessed pulls, that lift up to reveal between-joist storage for infrequently used items. He also built a step to ease access to the space from the entrance (in a bedroom) and trimmed out an adjacent under-stair storage space that was unattractive.

I am extremely satisfied with the workmanship and the outcome of the job. The job was completed exactly to the estimate, and the room simply looks great. Upstate Remodel was very flexible and accommodating, and very professional. I will definitely consider them for future services.
Description of Work: I hired Upstate Remodel to replace a single patio door on an existing sunroom with a set of French doors. The job involved reframing an existing wall in order to be able to incorporate standard 6 foot French doors, removing an existing window, replacing the interior paneling, and replacing the exterior siding. Upon completion of the work, all scrap material was hauled away, and the work site was properly cleaned.

He did a very good job and was very clear about the scope of work from the beginning (what he can/would perform and not). He was also very responsive to a couple of changes that required different railing materials and finish colors. He performed very high quality work and we love the stairs. Overall great job.
Description of Work: David re-did our stairs and upper landing by removing old carpet, stairs and railings and installing new hardwood stairs and flooring. This included cutting, staining and finishing of all stair plates and rails as well as installing the new hardwood floor in the upstairs landing and hallway.

Overall the project went very well, and his works is very good. Additional key factors that made for a positive experience were David staying within our agreed upon start and end dates for the project as well as leaving a cleaned up work area at the end of the day so I could continue to live comfortably in my home while the work was being completed.
Description of Work: David removed and rebuilt water damaged cabinets in my kitchen. In addition, he repainted the frames of all the cabinets in the kitchen and added crown molding. He also installed a floating bamboo floor. During the project, it was determined that the existing dishwasher was too tall to fit under the cabinets with the new flooring, and he helped install a new one.

Overall, both jobs went very well. David is easy to work with and make great suggestions and ideas. We were very pleased at all the work David did. He pays great attention to detail. He will make sure it is done right and his work is quality.
Description of Work: David Hammond completed two jobs for us. Job #1: Cost- $1700 David replaced a patio door with a new window, and then cut through our kitchen wall leading out to our patio and installed a sliding glass door. This wall was a load bearing wall, so in reinforced the header and studded around the sliding glass door very well. David also moved electrical switches and sockets for us. David's drywall work is some of the best I've have seen. He takes great care to detail. He goes above and beyond in all that he does. He cleans up after his work- really he cleans as he is working. David is honest and trustworthy, a good Christian man, and he will do what he says he will do. The estimate was $1700.00 and that was the completed price. Job#2: Cost- $6,700 We had a crack above our fireplace and the sheetrock was coming loose where it was taped. David opened it up to find rot behind the wall. Outside around our fireplace he also found rot and said that it was pretty bad. We were going on vacation, so David said he would tear out the wall, remove all the rotted wood, rebuild the wall, box in the fireplace, drywall, paint, retexture the ceiling. We trusted David to be in our house while we were gone. He called us everyday and keep us updated. The flashing around the fireplace was not done right from the beginning, and water had been leaking into the walls who knows for how long. He triple flashed around the chimney, and rebuilt the box around the fireplace. He took pictures of everything, and there were giant holes rotted into the walls, and the header above the fireplace was crumbling and black. When we got home from vacation, we had a new wall. David even painted the rest of the living room to match. That's going above and beyond. Everything was clean and our furniture was placed back. David ran into a lot more than than he had anticipated, but he didn't raise the cost. David saved our house. There are other projects we want David to do later. We will be calling David back. He does a great job and goes above and beyond in all he does.

He was very generous with his time and it was a free estimate. I'm convinced he is an expert in his field as he explained techniques to be used and even had suggestions as to how to change the floorplan. His talent lies not only in performing the work but visualizing artistic touches. He showed me pictures on his camera of work he had performed and the work was impressive.
Description of Work: I made the appt about a week in advance for 9:00a.m. and confirmed it with David on 6/6, a day before the appt. Insured he had correct directions. I arrived a few minutes before 9:00a.m. and when he had not arrived by 9:30a.m., I called him and he was in Simpsonville and said he would drive right over. He said he'd been in the mountains all weekend and had become engaged to be married, so I cut him a little slack. I offered to pay for the gas he used to get the Moore, and he declined but said he appreciated the offer. David and I were at the house for at least two hours and he did a thorough inventory of what would have to be done, including gutting the interior. He gave freely of his time and had some great ideas and I believe he would do a lovely job but the price of $40,000 (and he didn't know if he was going to uncover any problems that would increase the cost) I thought too expensive for my budget and that was with me paying someone else to put a new roof on. Another $5,000 at least. I decided not to buy the house.

It went very well. David works alone and therefore takes a little more time than another company might. However, it is definitely worth the wait. His perfectionism, craftsmanship and his attention to detail is unsurpassed. The rooms look beautiful. David also offers suggestions when I can't make up my mind about something. His suggestions are usually very good ones and I have gone with many of them. I can't tell you how much of a perfectionist David is. His workmanship far exceeds any other contractor we have ever used. He is a true artist. My tile shower looks fabulous! I can't wait to use it. He loves tiling and it shows. My hardwood flooring is unbelievable! David is a very rare craftsman.
Description of Work: David is just about completed with a project that started March 21, 2011. This is what he did: Demo the master bed/bath/closet. Got rid of a skylight in master bath and repaired roof. Drywalled all rooms, painted all rooms, installed hardwood red oak flooring in Master bedroom. Installed tile walls in shower, using the ditra system making it waterproof. Installed tile flooring using the ditra system. Put up crown moulding/casing and base trim in both rooms. He is installing shelving in the linen closet. Very professional job.

His quality and craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. We would have no hesitation giving David stars for his work and sincerity and a wholehearted recommendation.
Description of Work: David an exceptional carpenter. Just the qualities that we were hoping to find for our project, he is a perfectionist, an artist, a craftsman, and exemplary of his trade. David demolished our existing stairway to the second floor. This involved removing just the correct amount of plasterboard to correspond with the design of the new build. He crafted an open staircase with oak hand rails, white spindles and a center newel that is truly a showpiece. We can't speak highly enough about our remodeling experience with Upstate Remodeling. He took our ideas and created exactly what we wanted and more! He also fabricated some cabinets for our kitchen make-over

David re- sheetrocked a spare bedroom, bathroom that was completely gutted out. He did the finish carpentry of framing out doors and crown moulding. he also painted both rooms, spare bedroom and bathroom. To my delight and amazement, the job was very professionally completed and cleaned. He went over and above doing things that we didn't even ask him to do but he did it because he wanted it done. he has suggested many ideas of projects going forward. This was all done with us being in Massachusetts and him being in SC. He sent us updates and pictures. He was in constant contact with us making sure that what he was doing or about to do was indeed exactly what we wanted. I give him many praises. very professional. We have already hired him to do many more projects.
