I brought a Suzuki Forenza to fix some erratic behavior (i.e., switching gears at high speed) it was having in addition to a check engine light on that was probably associated with it. They explained very clearly that the car needed a new catalytic converter and how unfortunately Suzuki was the only company from which parts can be bought, which rendered the new converter expensive ~ 700 dollars. Before I left the car to be serviced, he clearly stated the cost of service if in addition there was a need for a new oxygen sensor . They were very diligent at calling me to call me about the state of the car, that such extra replacement (i.e., sensor) was not needed and that they had replaced a front light bulb at no extra labor cost. I made an excellent impression out of their service.

See above time line showing services performed. I have not picked up the car yet, therefore, I have not seen the second invoice to even know what they did, other than labor. I will have to wait until I get the money to pay. I am writing this on Labor Day and it will probably be mid-month. Thankfully, my sister has loaned me her backup vehicle.My concerns are: (1) They did not call back when they said they would, which I consider to be poor customer relations; a call should have been made (by secretary) even if just to say that they were still working. (2) Trying to sell me a battery, when apparently the one I have is OK. The car started fine when I picked it up the first time and drove it home, even making a stop at the grocery store. (3) The length of time it took to find and fix the multiple problems. First time 11 work days from 7/31/12 to 8/14/12; Second time 11 work days from 8/16/12 to 8/31/12. The labor on the invoice doesn’t show the number of hours, only the total cost. I might have been better off to take it to the dealer, pay more per hour for labor, but have it fixed in a shorter amount of time. I sort of feel like they used my car as a guinea pig to learn to work on problems, and I’m paying the bill. (4) This was a used car purchased for only $3800, is 10 years old, and has 126,208 + miles, so I wonder if this is a good use of my money - total repair cost $1,111. That’s a considerable amount of money from my budget, being that I am retired and on a fixed income, and the chance that there will be future problems that will have to be fixed.Overall, it was a frustrating experience mostly because they did not return my calls, I was without my vehicle for a month, and they did not consider the total amount of money I would have to pay to get the car fixed. Perhaps my concerns can be addressed before I pay the last invoice. Maybe Angieslist’ intervention can save me some money and your complaints process will decide whether they should remain on the List as a reputable shop. Of course, I know nothing about any of these automobile issues (and have written what I heard in layman's terms), so I don’t want to complain if they have done a good job.Thank you for any assistance you can provide.Linda Long-Carnes
Description of Work: Time Line for Car Repair on 2002 Kia Sedona - Race Automotive, Lexington, SC 07/31/12 2002 Kia Sedona towed to Race Automotive, mileage 126,206; problem unknown; engine died while driving and would not start. 08/07/12 Called by Race Auto; spoke with man who did not identify himself, but I assumed it was owned, Ernie Russell. Said they had to replace a sensor and I understood it would be ready to pick up the following day. Estimated cost $300. Also stated battery had to be jumped and offered to sell me one for $100 and that I needed front brake pads, and serpentine belt replaced. I declined battery and additional work (my husband said not urgent, and this could be done by self-employed mechanics at a later date at a lower cost). 08/08/12 To Lexington to pick up vehicle around 11:00am; told by other employee that Mr. Russell had gone to get a part; had found other problem with vehicle; they will call back. 08/08/12 6:15pm; Mr. Russell (I again assume) called back and stated the car needed to have timing belt replaced and a tensioner; labor would be the same because had to remove timing belt to replace the sensor; would be only additional charges for parts. I OK’d. 08/14/12 Called to say car was ready; cost $582.30. 08/15/08 To Lexington to pick up vehicle 11:30am; had Angieslist 10% coupon and received $58.23 discount on labor; cost $524.07 - paid cash. Invoice showed parts to include crank position sensor ((71-44953) $88.32, Tensioner, hydraulic (24410-39001) $116.41 , Timing belt-powergrip premium OE, interference engine application (T323) $133.65, shop supplies $9.56, and labor $210.00. 8/15/12 5:45pm - Going to Wednesday night church, engine died while driving and would not start. Called Race Automotive; they will come to tow back to shop tomorrow or try to fix at site between 10:00 and 11:00am. 8/16/12 I called Race Auto at 11:30; he asked me to try to start car, which I did, but it wouldn’t start. Said they would be here with wrecker within one hour. Called back to say it would be later and to leave key in car (I had an appointment to keep). I was leaving at 1:15pm and passed the tow truck coming in. 8/17/12 I called Race Auto to check on problem at 3:45pm; they were to call back; no return call. 8/20/12 I called Race Auto to check on car at 12 noon; secretary said she would have them call me back; no call back at 2:15pm, so I called again and secretary said she thought it was ready except needed to do test drive to make sure all was fixed. She would ask them to call back after they returned; no call back. 8/21/12 Mr. Russell (I again assume) called to explain that there was an electrical problem and that a short kept blowing the fuse that goes to the sensor they had replaced. They have to find the short to fix the problem; the tech has ordered a new machine that will help identify the short, but they have to get information off the internet to find out how to operate the new machine. 8/22/12 No news 8/23/12 I called Race Auto - still searching for wire that shorts out. 8/24/12 No news 8/27/12 My husband called to check and secretary said she would have them call back. He told them "If they can’t fix it, please let us know". No call back. 8/28/12 I called Kia dealer and spoke with service department. Told them what I knew; they felt they could fix but would cost $100 diagnostic fee to see exactly what the problem was. No call back by noon, so I called Race Auto. Still working on problem, but felt it should be ready by next day; to call back around 10:00am. 8/29/12 No call back by 11:00am, so I called Race Auto. Secretary said they were still working and would have to test drive after finished; should be ready and call back around 10:00am, next day. 8/30/12 No call by 10:00am; I called at 10:35; Mr. Russell (I again assume) explained that now the car showed no compression in 1, 3, & 5. I asked for further info and he said when they test drive the car that the check engine light comes on and their tests show the lack of compression and also that it is not running properly when it is idling. They are trying to identify the problem and are still working on it. They will call back when ready. 8/31/12 Secretary called at 5:00pm to say that car was ready and invoice was $587. She said that it showed a $400 discount on labor and I didn’t think to ask about parts, etc., so I'm not sure if anything else was replaced. They closed at 6:00pm, so I stated I would have to wait until after Labor Day to pick and also have to find the money somewhere. Wow!!! Is this a perception versus reality issue or what? I am very sorry that the member feels this way. It is very troubling for me because I have only her best interest at heart and gone over and beyond to assist her as best as possible. First off my secretary or my self has been the only people conversing with the member. I have told the member who I am and has been asked for by name by the member and the member so there should not be any identity issues. I have explained in full detail the needed repairs and praised by the member for explaining the needed repairs so she could understand them. When a vehicle comes to our shop for the first time we provide a FREE inspection to get a baseline on the vehicles condition then prioritize the necessary repairs as needed.When the vehicle arrived at our shop the battery was dead. We charged battery and scanned the vehicle. Test proved that there was no crank signal from crank position sensor, . This signal is required for the ECM (computer) to locate the position of crankshaft to start the running process. The CKP is behind the timing belt and in order to remove the CKP the belt had to be removed. Since this vehicle is ten years old and has 126240 miles with little to no maintenance performed I asked the member if the timing belt has been changed, she stated that she didn’t know. I explained that the timing belt, tensioner and serpentine belt replacement would be FREE labor at this time due to them having to be removed to repair the CKP. She authorized the repair of timing belt, tensioner and CKP and they were repaired. During the diagnosis process and the repair process we had to frequently charge the battery. The battery tested weak with an electric and mechanical tester, that is why the suggestion of new battery for $79.99 and FREE labor was spoken about.The front brake pads are close to being unsafe that is why they were told of them needing replacement. The serpentine belt replacement was not authorized. The member called us and said the vehicle had stopped running at her church and her husband got it to their house. We do not have a wrecker so I called a service to pick up vehicle. I do not have the ability to assign what time the vehicle would be picked up but the tow was ordered. On the second visit the vehicle came in with a spin no start condition. We scanned vehicle and it had multiple codes stored. Random miss fire, lean bank 1 (which consists of cylinders #1,#3 and #5 and meaning that there was not the proper amount of fuel to those cyliders) and miss fire #3 cylinder. NONE of these codes were present on first visit. After further diagnosis is was found that something was blowing a necessary fuse. we replaced the fuse and vehicle started but soon thereafter blew it again. After replacing the fuse at random it would blow causing vehicle to stop running. This condition as explained is VERY hard to pinpoint. The fuse would blow at random., sometimes when hitting a bump in road,sometimes by wiggle test and other times would go for extended drives before it would blow. After a very long process and many test drives the fuse blowing was solved and explained to the member. That left the other codes to correct. There was NEVER a compression issue found or discussed. The miss fire on #3 cylinder was due to a defective, factory installed 10 year old 126240 mile plug wire. During the diagnosis it was also found that the vehicle had the original factory installed ten year old 126240 mile spark plugs in it with a plug gap (the difference measured between the plug ground strap and electrode) of over twice the recommended value which was causing the random miss fire issue. The vehicles mass air flow meter (which was also the original one) was contributing to the lean indication and also needed repair. I talked to the member and explained EVERY discovery and EVERY repair to her and tried to get the member but he could not be reached but when I spoke to the member I told her that I could not get the member but to please tell him I tried.. Her remark was to fix the vehicle as she needed it and wanted it to run correctly. We charge by the Mitchell program which is the industry standard of automobile repair. Our hourly rate is $75.00 which means if a repair calls for 1 hour the charge would be $75.00. The Mitchell program basically means that all repair facilities would charge one hour for the repair but where we differ is by what we charge per hour. NO dealership charges $75.00 per hour therefore could NOT perform the same job for less. No dealership cares if you are on a fixed income or retired as well. No labor times is printed on invoices per our program which is updated quarterly but at ANY time we will be happy to show anyone the labor times allotted. There are times such as the repair of a blowing fuse that are not in the system due to the fact that there is NO concrete data to ask labor for. The member stated that she felt like her vehicle was used for a “guinea pig” which is far from the case. This vehicle is ten years old and its technology is way past that ability. It is just simply a hard issue to repair. If your pads are worn you replace them, if your head gasket is blown you correct it as well but if at random for no reason your vehicle blows a fuse on an entire circuit you have to locate the reason of failure. In closing, I conversed with the member on EVERY repair prior to making it. I had her best interest at heart on every repair. I didn’t try to sell her anything she didn’t need as I could just have replaced the CKP on this repair and when the timing belt failed (which would have been soon as it was grossly overdue to be replaced) and the pistons bent the valves the repair then would have been about $2100.00 in which I would have made a lot more money. I feel compassionate for the member financial situation is why I priced the job and then refunded her $400.00. The member got refunded what the shop would have made as profit on labor, all that was charged to her was my technicians fee and parts. I have helped others in need in the past the same way. I dont understand what the problem is with the bill so I am going to assume that for driving a vehicle that is ten years old with 126240 miles on it with no maintenance that one would not know what any maintenance cost would be and coming all at one time is a little overwhelming to her. I am very saddened that she feels upset and I can assure her if she would reflect on our conversations she wouldnt feel this way.I also feel that the rating that was given to us is a GROSS injustice to me and a misuse of this great platform. We just moved down from Chicago and were looking for a place to service our two Audi's. We went with Race based on the positive feedback from Angiel's List. Though it is a bit out of the way for us (about 10 miles from our house), we're more than happy to make the drive. They now perform regular maintenance on our vehicles as well as repairs related to wear and tear.

I had an excellent experience overall. The staff is very friendly, and are quick to do their work.
Description of Work: This is my second report on this fine establishment, but not the second time I've used their services. Once again, Mr. Russell, the owner, has graciously come to my rescue and fixed a radiator and air conditioning problem for me. Over the years he's fixed the fan motor, catalytic convertor problems, and various other things that have kept my 10 year old Saturn with over 150K miles safely on the road. For a woman alone, it's hard to know who to trust. I can say without any hesitation that Race Automotive is an auto repair shop that is honest and trustworthy. They are reasonable in their prices and promptly do the repairs necessary. I highly recommend this company.

I can't say enough about Ernie and Race Automotive. I found them on Angie's List and then realized I went to school with his sister and cousin - SMALL WORLD. Anyway, i will NEVER take my vehicles anywhere else. He quoted me a price one day and I picked up the truck the next for the exact price quoted. Ernie even shopped around for a motorcycle battery for me to save me money. He explained everything so that I could understand why things weren't working, what made them work, and how they would be repaired. I will recommend Race to everyone I know !!

it was a true test of how Angie's does help to find that needle in the haystack. I was encouraged that their are still good people that are willing to give fair prices and in a way put more money into people's hands to spend and get this nation of ours back on track. After all wasn't it dishonest people that caused the problems that we as a nation face. Bless the Ernie's of the world because they are the wave of hope we need to rebuild faith in each other .
Description of Work: I put in a report over the phone but I wanted to stress the fact this guy helped me save money. He took my problem and help me think about how i could save money. By asking me questions like they had me check the receipt where I bought the clutch a few year back and sure enough he was right it had a life time replace on the part. Then when the part store tried to charge me 119.00 the difference in the price now I called Ernie and he said no way and when I told them that I knew that this way not right . they made the exchange with out cost ,Never in all my life have I had help like this from such a young person. Older people have but this guy really did me right. I saved 419.00 on the clutch . He found a bolt missing fixed it. Turned out my fly could not be turn replaced it because he wanted me to have a car that was fixed. and the price was below what i could find. Then there is the big fact that the guy that did replace the clutch two years ago maybe if I found Race then I would not have had to go through this.. A honest mechanic is the same as a pound of gold I kid you not.

I cannot say enough good things about this company. Often women are taken advantage of when it comes to car repairs. Race Automotive treated me with courtesy, they were very honest and above board and very reasonable in their prices. I highly recommend this company!
Description of Work: A friend was supposed to install the fan blower motor on my Saturn but never got around to it. I called Race and told them I had the part and what would they charge in labor, and they were very competitive and affordable. When I got there, my car was worked on right away and completed within 1.5 hours. They also found the resistor switch was bad. Race soldered and repaired that for free.

Dropped the car off Mon. morning and told them I wasn't in a hurry. Didn't hear from them that day but that wasn't a problem. Was in the area Tues at noon and stopped by to find they'd just finished. The final bill was a little less than the estimate. I also had them run a line for a remote radar detector through the firewall. They did a great job on it for a reasonable price.
Description of Work: Acura dealer wanted $1400 to replace timing belt, water pump and other related parts recommended at 100K miles on my RL. Ernie gave three estimates by email for just belt, belt and pump and everything. I went with everything. Car runs fine and I was impressed with the shop as they seem to be professional mechanics, not just grease monkeys.

Took car to Race - rear brake was grinding - uncertain what it was or what was needed. Called me before lunch with the estimate - caliper was sticking, causing the grinding. Work was done per estimate and by time promised. Even got some Christmas cookies when picking up the car.

The person I originally went to was charging me double and sending the work to Race Auto. These people are real pros diagnosing the problem and telling is that they and 2 other places were authorized to do the work and gave us their names and address. We settled on Race Automotive. I emailed Race and described my car and problem because their website made me think they are a speed shop only, rather than handling gernal auto work. Ernest emailed my back and I called for an appointment. My car had what I thought was a gas leak and he described a couple of possibilities in his return email. Race diagnosed and repaired what I thought was a gasoline leak. They diagnosed the problem, told me what was required to fix it, quoted me a price, and I authorized the repair - all while I waited. They replaced the rubber seal around the gas tank filler pipe, which had split and was allowing fumes to escape both inside and outside the car. It was labor-intensive, but the problem is solved - and in somewhat less time then they estimated. They could easily have told me it was a more serious problem, as was suggested in the email, and I'd probably have accepted it. They could probably have gotten away with charging me more in the process. I haven't worked on a car in many years. But they are honest and the solution was not one even mentioned in the email. I am quite pleased with the result and Race Automotive.
