Dave and his brother did an excellent job. We were at a loss to determine what should be done to improve the entry. Dave was able to provide ideas - final job worked out to be better than we expected. I would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Repair and upgrading of our home's front entry - including removal of old steps, replacing with new, larger steps, re-pointing/grouting of existing slate and stucco. To accomplish this - a portion of the concrete driveway had to be cut out - which was a difficult job.

I would give them a B+ to an A-. Decent quality for the price, but insufficient attention to detail in certain respects.

Not much went correctly on this job. The first time out, they didn't have a ladder tall enough so that involved an additional day. The masonry used to fill the cracks has never matched the existing masonry. I was told it would be close, but after 9-10 months, it still is much darker than the original. I paid them by check mailed to their billing address, but it was returned by the Post Office as undeliverable. I sent them an e-mail asking for a better address. Didn't hear anything for a few days, then my wife got an insulting call from Mr. Allen. I called him back and he didn't seem to believe me on the returned payment, but I sent the envelope with the PO markings back to him with the check. I think there are better people to do business with.

Dave and his brother did a great job. They were punctual and had good attention to detail. Daily job site clean up was excellent. Dave provided good advice and was willing to advocate on our behalf with the material supplier when needed. Their experience and knowledge of the masonry trade was very apparent. The finished job met all of our expectations.
Description of Work: Removed old tile from front porch (about 150 square feet) and replaced it with travertine stone. Repaired front brick steps by grinding out old row-lock joints and re-grouted with matching mortar. Removed caps on brick piers and replaced them with reused brick and travertine stone.

David came out and quoted. His initial appearance scared us a little, but our first impressions were wrong. We went with him over 3 others just based on a gut feeling. His 3 man crew arrived. They all spoke English, and worked hard. They didn't like the replacement bricks they had, so David went to 5 or 6 places before he found a brick that closely matched our 20 year old brick. They took great pride in installation and color matching grout. They cleaned up very nicely. Came back out a few days later to check on their work, as grout takes a few days to dry properly. Very happy we chose David's group.

The Allens were very responsive with phone call follow ups, coming out to provide a free estimate, scheduling and completing the work. They repaired all of the mortar that was crumbling. They also replaced a few bricks that they noticed were cracked. Their work looks great and I think they did a lot of work for $300.

They told me it might take 3 weeks to get someone out to do the work and it only took 2. They got the work done in half a day, which is better than they originally estimated. The steps look like new. They are going to come back in a few weeks to acid wash the steps. I think they did a great job. I did have some difficulty contacting them on the day they were supposed to do the work. I wanted to confirm they were going to do the work on that day and nobody answered either of their phone numbers.

Had to make several phone calls to schedule - calls not returned in timely manner. I told them they needed at least a 16' ladder and I told them what work I wanted - they said they could do it. Workman arrived an hour and a half late with a normal size ladder which was useless - he had muddy boots on and tracked mud all across my white carpet and then said he'd never done work like that before and didn't think he could do it.

MR. ALLEN CAME TWICE TO LOOK AT JOB REQUESTED AND TO VERIFY ALL THE ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT. THOUGHT IT WAS NOT A HUGE PROJECT, HE TOOK A GREAT INTEREST IN OVERSEEING THE WORK DONE BY HIS CREW. MR. ALLEN'S CREW WAS KNOWLEDGEABLE & WORKED DILIGENTLY. CLEANED UP VERY WELL & RETURNED AS PROMISED TO CLEAN ENTIRE PATIO WITH ACID.
Description of Work: RE-GROUTED THE BRICK PATIO, ADDED 3 BRICK PLANTERS TO EXISTING PATIO AND A LOW BRICK WALL ON ONE SIDE. MR. ALLEN ALSO REMOVED 2 SMALL TREES AT THE BACK OF THE PROPERTY FOR NO EXTRA CHARGE.

I HAVE HAD IT WITH THIS COMPANY, THEY REFUSE TO RETURN MY CALLS OR FIX THEIR SLOPPY ATTEMPT AT BUILDING A MASONRY RETAINING WALL. IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS COMPANY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT IS DOING AND DOESN'T WANT TO PROVIDE QUALITY SERVICE AND A QUALITY PRODUCT. I SUGGEST PEOPLE LOOK ELSEWHERE. THE RETAINING WALL HAS NOT BEEN FINISHED. EVEN WITH THE HELP OF ANGIE'S LIST TO RESOLVE MY COMPLAINT AND THIS COMPANY'S AGREEMENT WITH THE RESOLUTION WHICH WAS TO PUT CRUSHED STONE BEHINDTHE SECTION OF WALL THAT FELL, DID POST HOLES TO 5 FT. AND PUT IN CONCRETE(MEMBER PAYS FOR CONCRETE.) HE STATED LABOR WOULD BE FREE AND NO GUARANTEE ON WALL UNLESS MEMBER GETS ENGINEER. AFTER 90 DAYS THEY STILL DID NOTHING. IF THIS COMPANY WAS OF A CREDIBLE NATURE, THEY WOULD HAVE STARTED WORK RIGHT AWAY. I AM IN PROCESS WITH THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF NORTH CAROLINA TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE.
Description of Work: I SIGNED A CONTRACT IN OCTOBER 2004 TO CONSTRUCT A 6 FOOT HIGH 75 FOOT WIDE RETAINING WALL OF KEYSTONE INTERLOCKING BLOCK. WORK WAS NOT STARTED UNTIL APRIL 2005. THEN IT WAS NOT COMPLETED UNTIL JULY 2005. 1 DAY AFTER IT WAS COMPLETED, THE WALL FELL DOWN. I HAD ASKED THEM BEFORE CONSTRUCTION BEGAN, "IS CONCRETE NEEDED FOR FOOTINGS?" THEY TOLD ME "NO"! TO THIS DAY IT IS STILL IN RUIN. THEY REFUSE TO FIX IT. IT WAS THEN SUGGESTED THAT WE POUR CONCRETE FOOTINGS. HOWEVER THEY WANT ME TO PAY AN ADDITONAL $2400 TO FIX MY WALL THAT THEY HAD STATED THAT CONCRETE WAS NOT NEEDED.

Response from Allen's Complete Masonry
OUR OFFER IS THE SAME AS IT HAS BEEN, DIG FOOTINGS FOR CONCRETE AND RELAY BLOCK LABOR FREE, WITH MEMBER PAYING FOR HIS MATERIAL COST. FOOTINGS HAVE BEEN DUG SINCE AUGUST BY US, AS PROMISED. SINCE THE SOIL IN HIS YARD HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE THE ISSUE, WE WILL NOT, AND CANNOT GUARANTEE STABILITY OF WALL WITHOUT AN ENGINEERED PLAN WHICH HE REFUSES TO DO. WE WORKED ON HIS WALL FROM MAY 9TH UNTIL COMPLETION ON JUNE 8TH. NOT ONE DAY, BUT TWO MONTHS LATER HE CALLED AND TOLD US A SECTION OF WALL HAD CALLAPSED THE NIGHT BEFORE. I SUGGESTED A SOIL TEST, HE REFUSED. AT THIS TIME I, NOT THE MEMBER RECOMMENDED CONCRETE FOOTERS AND WE AGREED TO POUR CONCRETE FOOTING FOR ADDED STRENGTH. AFTER DIGGING FOOTINGS, WE FOUND SOFT SOIL, AND I TOOK IT UPON MYSELF TO HIRE AN ENGINEER FOR A SOIL TEST. CONCLUSION: SOIL 4 FEET UNDER WALL WAS NO GOOD, WITH HIGH WATER TABLE. THIS WILL REQUIRE A SUBSTANTIAL FOOTING NOT ORDINARILY REQUIRED FOR KEYSTONE BLOCK WALLS, AND ABOVE INITIAL COST. HE AGREED. FOOTINGS HAVE BEEN DUG SINCE AUGUST AND HE NOW REFUSES TO PAY FOR MATERIAL. THE SOIL IN HIS YARD IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE WORKMANSHIP. AFTER 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS, OUR REPUTATION SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. ALLEN FURTHER OFFERED TO DIG POST HOLES TO 5 FT AND ADD CRUSHED STONE BEHIND THE SECTION THAT FELL. HE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE WALL. MEMBER NEEDS TO GET AN ENGINEER WHO WOULD GUARANTEE IT AND ALLEN WOULD DO WHATEVER THE ENGINEER WANTED DONE.

THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF MASONRY EXHIBITED. TALKED WITH 3 SUBS, THE ALLEN'S WERE THE ONLY ONE TO RESPOND IN TIMELY MANNER. LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THEM AGAIN. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

WE HAD SEVERAL WEEKS OF DELAY GETTING THE WORK STARTED (THOUGH MUCH OF THAT WAS DUE TO RAIN) BUT ONCE HE CAME ON SITE AND COMPLETED THE WORK, I WAS VERY PLEASED. PROFESSIONAL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. HE HAULED OFF SOME ADDITIONAL BRICKS FOR NO CHARGE. WE WOULD USE ALLEN'S AGAIN.
Description of Work: WE WANTED TO REMOVE A BADLY SLOPING SLAB OF CONCRETE IN OUR BACK SIDEWALK WHERE WATER WAS COLLECTING AGAINST THE HOUSE. HE BROKE UP THE OLD SLAB, THEN LAID GRAVEL AND SAND UNDERNEATH AND THEN REPOURED A NEW 4 INCH SLAB LEVEL; USED REBAR TO ATTACH IT TO THE HOUSE TO KEEP IT FIXED. COLORED THE CONCRETE TO APPROXIMATE THE COLOR OF CONNECTING CONCRETE. CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY TO CHECK ON IT AND REMOVE WOOD SIDES FROM SLAB AND HAULED OFF DEBRIS.

PRICE WAS MUCH MORE COMPETITIVE THAN OTHER BIDS, AND THE WORK WAS DONE WELL AND IN TIMELY FASHION. INITIALLY THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH ALIGNMENT (DUE MORE TO THE WAY THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS BUILT RATHER THAN ANYTHING THEY DID), BUT THEY CAME BACK UNTIL IT WAS FIXED AND THE JOB DONE RIGHT.
