I'm sorry to hear the issues you've stated in your review. I had no idea of these concerns, as you never contacted me and only complimented us on the installation work when we were finished. I'm surprised you're having issues with dust over a year later, when we installed a pre finished flooring for you and only cut end pieces in one small area of your home. Everything was vacuumed up really well and we even helped you place your furniture back. It's also interesting as your job billed in under $4,000, with over half of that being your flooring material costs; not $5,000. Interesting? If there is anything I can do to better your situation feel free to contact me. Thank you.

Description of Work: We hired Johnny to replace a carpeted room with hardwoods and sand and stain adjoining stairs. The job was a bit more labor-some than original expected so the initial estimate increased based on our mutual agreement. I can't say enough about Johnny, his professionalism, work ethic and product and knowledge. From our initial meeting when he just gave us his estimate, we were extremely comfortable. Johnny gave us lots of information and advice. His original time table to complete the job was 4-5 days. He completed the job in 2 days!! We were astounded. Our floors and stairs look great. We are so glad to get rid of that nasty carpet. I would highly recommend Homewood Hardwoods to anyone and will contact Johnny immediately for any flooring jobs in the future.

Description of Work: Water from a leaking hot water heater added to many years of traffic had taken its toll on the kitchen floor. Johnny to the rescue! He was professional and enthusiastic from start to finish. It shows when you really love what you're doing. He gave a detailed written estimate. The floors were sanded, stained to match those in the rest of the house and sealed, all with minimum dust and upheaval. He came when expected and completed everything as planned. Couldn't get any better.

Reliable. Professional. Punctual. Expert Craftsman. Upon purchase of a home built in 1961, we peeled back the sculpted wall-to-wall carpets to find that the carpet pad was stuck randomly in tiny chunks, all over the 1 inch wide pine flooring. Near the door and the fireplace were pet urine stains from years ago. All 1500 sq ft of hardwood floors needed refinishing. Since Homewood Hardwood offers a low odor finish, and Johnny Homewood was so polite and professional, with a fair estimate, the work was begun. All of the old carpet & padding were then pulled, bundled and removed immediately by Johnny. After removing what must have seemed like 3 million carpet staples, he sanded, double sanded, and sometimes triple-sanded in the pet urine spots, careful not to damage the integrity of the wood floor. In the kitchen, Johnny Homewood moved the stove, took out the old vinyl flooring and removed a layer of sub-flooring in order to lay down new wood floors. He removed the old vinyl and sub- floor from the premises. He then perfectly matched the stain of the new pine kitchen floor to the 50 year old floors that he re-finished and re-stained in the rest of the house. The floors that had no pet damage, but had carpet padding stuck to them, were extremely beautiful once refinished, stained, and finished by John. During the week of his refinishing, Johnny kept me updated on his progress, and was present when I went to the house to see the final completion. John Homewood arrived early for every scheduled appointment. I was very satisfied. Even after he was paid, when I called and asked if he would return to the house to put the closet doors back on their tracks, he kindly did so that day. I found out that John enjoys the process of a project: working through the steps of cleaning, sanding, staining, and adding finish, with the final goal of getting it to meet his perfectionism. I consider John Homewood to be very professional, reliable, trustworthy, and a true craftsman.

Johnny did an amazing job refinishing the floors of our newly purchased Rosewood home. He also fashioned a new threshold between the floors and the bathroom and at the kitchen. Very reasonable, professional, clean, timely. Really knows his floors. Also, low VOC so no odor and safe for my son. I would recommend him strongly to anyone who every needed work done on hardwood floors -- the expert.

I had planned to be out of town the week the project was to have been completed. I returned on the 3rd day to repack and leave again the following day. During my absence, he installed the new prefinished hardwood on top of the particle board and existing old hardwood in the foyer and great room without doing any demolition whatsoever. He did this without my knowledge or approval despite the fact he had my cell phone and could have contacted me if he wanted to change the installation proposal. Furthermore he cut door jambs throughout the first floor plus a mahogany front door in order to accept the newly elevated floor. Now I have two options; either tear out the new hardwood and start over completely, replacing all interior doors and front door, and rebuilding all door jambs or continue laying new hardwood over particle board and old hardwood. I was so upset I told him to come and remove his tools which he did promptly. I wanted him out of the house immediately and only asked for a $1000 refund, which he also paid promptly. At that time however, I had not discovered the cut door jambs and doors and was under the impression I still had the option of just tearing out the newly installed hardwood and starting over. Now I realize the cost to demolish everything, rebuild door jambs and replace doors would be prohibitive. Because of this, I should have demanded a complete refund of the $4000. February 2012 I submitted a complaint to the SC Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation January 24, 2011. Two LLR Residential Builders Commission investigators conducted an inspection of Mr. Homewood's work in my home on June 8, 2011 and submitted their findings to the Builders Commission. The Commission found Mr. Homewood in violation of SC Code of Laws 40-59-110 and 40-1-110(a) (1976, as amended) and also found that he "engaged in misconduct by engaging in substandard work". Mr. Homewood signed a Consent Agreement 11/8/2011 admitting to these allegations and agreed to the following sanctions: 1) Respondent's license shall be publicly reprimanded. 2) Respondent's residential builder's license RBS.52466 is suspended for Twelve (12) months, and Respondent shall pay a civil penalty of Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2500.00); HOWEVER, said suspension and civil penalty are immediately stayed upon the following conditions: a. Respondent shall pay a civil penalty of One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00) to the Commission within Thirty (30) days of the effective date of service for this Agreement. Said civil penalty is not deemed paid until received in full by the Commission. 3). Respondent acknowledges that he has the right to a hearing and to be represented by counsel in this matter, and freely, knowingly and voluntarily waives such rights by entering into this Consent Agreement. Respondent understands and agrees that by entering into this Consent Agreement, he voluntarily relinquishes any right to judicial review of Commission's action(s) which may be taken concerning any related matters. 4) Respondent understands and agrees that if this Consent Agreement is approved, it shall become a public document under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act 30-4-10 to -165. Mr. Homewood apparently paid his civil penalty before the thirty day deadline expired. The findings of the impartial South Carolina LLR Residential Builders Commission speak for themselves and can be found on their website under 'Disciplinary Information' at : www.LLR.state.sc.us/pol/residentialbuilders . No matter how Mr. Homewood portrays himself, he is not the victim in this project.
Description of Work: The project was to tear out existing hardwood, carpet, and particle board beneath carpet on the first floor (four rooms and a foyer), which was to be replaced with new plywood. Prefinished hardwood was then to be installed in all of these areas. We discussed the project many times verbally, by email, and he made at least two trips to the home before beginning work. He drew up a written proposal describing exactly what was to be done as described in the first sentence, and we agreed upon a price. I reviewed and accepted the written proposal. He asked for 50% ($4000) of the cost upfront with the balance to be pain upon completion. I checked his references before work began.

Response from Homewood Hardwoods
At our first meeting in the member's home to discuss a possible hardwood flooring installation, I pulled up the carpet along one entryway to discern what was below. This was the only area I could inspect without removing the member's furniture as he was living in the home. Below the carpet, I-inch thick wood sat on top of sub flooring. This was higher than the existing hardwood flooring in the rest of the home. To solve the problem, I proposed removing that I-inch thick wood and sub floor, then add new sub floor of varying thicknesses to get the entire home level for new hardwood flooring to be installed. The proposal was intended to solve a leveling issue, not issues of structure or strength. The member asked me to do the work, he took it upon himself to buy the flooring and shoe molding. To avoid having to pay restocking fees on un-used materials, the member bought less shoe molding than I had required. He said he would buy more as needed. While this would add at least one full workday to my schedule waiting for him to buy the actual amount of materials required, he stood a chance of being able to save from $50-$250 depending on how much material was left over after installation. When I removed the carpet, carpet pad, tack strips, and I-inch thick wood, the I-inch wood turned out to be an anomaly and only used in the one area I had inspected. The sub floor in the rest of the home was level and more than adequate to hold new hardwood flooring. In the interest of saving the member more than $2,000 in unnecessary charges and materials, I made a judgment call to install the new flooring directly on top of the existing sub floor. This decision compromised none of the strength or aesthetic, it simply saved money and made sense. In the process, the front door and a closet door next to it were trimmed at the bottom. The member and I had discussed the possibility of the front door needing to be trimmed for the floor to be installed. The reason was that the sub floor had a slight swell at this entrance. I did not cut any other doors in his home. It is common practice to cut doors as necessary when installing hardwood floors. As I proceeded with the job, I cut the doorjambs to be able to run the flooring. Doorjambs are always cut in hardwood flooring installations to give the effect of the home being built upon the floor. It is an integral aesthetic so the flooring is allowed to go beyond eyesight and disappear under the walls and entryways. It is one of the many steps to installing hardwood flooring correctly. The gas valve cover to the member's' fireplace was cracked and offset sideways within the carpet when I got there. I unscrewed it to install the flooring and I planned to buy the member a new one. The valve cap costs between $8 and $16, is a universal fit, and can be bought at most hardware stores. The member returned to the home midway through the job. He misinterpreted what he saw as some type of deception. These were accusations he made to me over the phone. Then, he stated he would give me the benefit of the doubt that I would have informed him of these changes. However, I was not given the chance, nor did I get a chance to submit my final invoice to him with these deductions. The next day, he angrily called and accused me of fraudulent work. I met with the member at his home. I explained what I had done and how he should feel comfortable about the integrity of the installation and the strength of the floor. The member was skeptical. I wanted him to be satisfied no matter what. I offered the member an extension of my customary workmanship warranty from one year to five years. I offered to remove five days of my work at my expense, and install the unnecessary new sub floor as he wished. I even offered to remove all of the work I had done so he could start anew with another flooring company. He accepted none of this. He stated, I don't want you to work in a hostile environment. I think it is best that we part ways now. Th member said he would remove the installed flooring himself. I gave him advice on how to proceed and offered to pay him for his troubles. When I had finished gathering all of my tools, cleaning up the entire job site, removing the trash, and had finished reloading my tool trailer, he came to me and said that I should reimburse him $1,000. I wrote him a check, expressed regret once again for the misinterpretation of my work, work ethic and honesty, and drove away. The check was cashed the next day. Since that day, I have received multiple threatening messages on my phone and my email, asking for more money or he would file complaints with Angie's List and Better Business Bureau, and contact his attorney. I have never had a dissatisfied client. To the contrary, my clients are pleased with my performance and their referrals are the mainstay of my business. I do not consider a job complete until my clients are satisfied. It is distressing to me that trust was lost, work was incomplete, and I have someone angry with me as if I was not working in his best interest. I was not given the trust or opportunity to do my work. In addition, the member wrote a nasty complaint to Angie's List on December 6, almost two weeks before he threatened to do so. He called me one week earlier than his original requested due date for $2,500 and threatened me with a lawsuit and told me I would regret this. There seems to be no appeasing the member or an end to his harassment and slander. I have hired an attorney to mitigate this for me, without bias. I want my good name and exemplary work slandered no longer. Sincerely, Johnny Homewood, Owner

Johnny did an excellent job. We have a large upstairs and the job took about two weeks. He worked steadily every day and was never late. He carefully explained what he was doing, answered all our questions, and was always cheerful, pleasant, and professional. We agreed on the price before he started work and the price did not change. The new floor is beautiful. We highly recommend Johnny and will definitely call him ourselves in the future if we have future flooring needs.

Description of Work: Johnny did an AMAZING job! I can't say enough about his workmanship, professionalism, and pricing! He pulled up my old carpet, stabilized the sub-flooring, sanded, refinished, and installed GORGEOUS Brazilian Cherry wood flooring, which he helped me pick out to maximize effect in the room, In addition, he did repair work on other hardwood in the house and refinished another section of the house. He was integral in helping me pick out the best wood product for the area (he has a background in art/sculpture so had an amazing eye! His pricing was far better than other estimates and the floors looked perfect. I could not have been happier!
