About us

I HAVE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED MY BUSINESS UNTIL I RECOVER FROM LEFT HIP AND RIGHT KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY. I WILL BE RESUMING WORK AS SOON AS I AM PHYSICALLY ABLE TO DO SO, OFFERING THE SAME QUALITY WORKMANSHIP AS IN THE PAST. Finish Carpentry Services is committed to to delivering quality woodworking and personalized service to our customers. Our business was established in 1985, doing primarily interior trim work, but also designing, building & installing cabinets in custom homes ranging in size from 2500 to 13,000 square ft. In 2011 the recession made it necessary to lay off entire 4 man crew, and I registered with Angie's List with interior trim and cabinets remaining the specialty of the business, but also doing jobs in other categories of carpentry (see categories listed in our ad). Six consecutive Super Service Awards show our commitment to quality and service, which is the guarantee that we stand behind our work . I had Michael Siegrist of Finish Carpentry Services install raised panel wainscoting in a foyer, and in a dining area. The raised panels were custom designed into a fabricated frame to fit different size wall areas, including an area below a bay window. The frames were topped with a three piece chair rail. The baseboard under the frame was made to match the existing baseboard in the house. The final result was a design that was symmetric and proportional for each area. I could not be more satisfied.

The work was performed in a small room where we needed some old, damaged sheetrock (that was covered in adhesive cork board) removed. Michael did this and then had a sheetrock craftsman come in and replace the sheetrock. He supervised this contractor and then afterwards he replaced and restored all damaged trim and baseboard. The work performed was to a very high standard and work area was kept clean. Michael had recently had knee replacement surgery, a very tough surgery to recover from, so he did take a day off to rest it during the few days this project took to complete. This was not a problem since he kept in constant communication with me and we were not in any hurry. I wouldn't hesitate to use Michael again and would recommend him to my friends and neighbors.

I called him to do a stairway. We made an appointment for him to come out to the house. And he said for me to email him a photo of the existing stair, and a photo of the desired stair to study first. I did what he requested. But when it came time for the appointment a day or so later, he did not show up! When I contacted him, he did not remember the appointment nor did he look at my emails. He said he had gotten "so busy". I just said "never mind then!" Beware this person will forget you.

I have a Pella window that is about 25 years old, and had extensive wood rot on the lower sash. Due to the age of the window Pella was not able to replace it and to my surprise not able to repair either. I contacted several different contractors who all referred me to someone else. Finally I found Michael Siegrist of Finish Carpentry. He first came out, took careful measurements and even pictures. He came out later in the month with his full truck complete with all tools and was able to repair the window sash. The window looks like new, the wood he used is rot resistant, and I was saved the cost of a new window if I could even find one. Mike is extremely professional, knows his craft, and takes great pride in his work. I would have no hesitation utilizing him again. Thank you Mike.

Mr. Siegrist and Finish Carpentry were great. Very good price for exceptionally high quality, absolutely custom shelf installation. We had existing furniture that we wanted to fit under the shelves (see picture, if I can figure out how to attach it), and Mr. Siegrist spent hours creating and discussing the estimate, along with several options of what we could do, before asking for a dime. Installation started exactly when promised, and even when the project ran over a bit, Mr. Siegrist refused to take final payment until the loose shelves fit perfectly. I was impressed. There was no complaint about things taking longer than he expected, and he stuck with his initial estimate exactly, which was great. We've had the shelves for months now, fully filled with books and some fairly heavy stereo equipment, and they are holding up great. These really are high quality shelves that seem like they'll last just as long as the house around them. If there's any fair heads up, it's that Finish Carpentry's prices are exceptionally competitive for the high quality work they're doing in part because of the company's low overhead. There's no extra employee dedicated to scheduling work, etc. We had one missed meeting early on, but Mr. Siegrist contacted us as soon as he realized it and rescheduled when was most convenient for us. And he was just as patient as we tried to decide exactly what we wanted, which we appreciated. Great work., exceptional quality, heirloom quality custom woodwork. If you're on the fence, give Finish a yell.

Mike did a fantastic job trimming out our home. You could tell he takes pride in his work and wants the job done right. He was helpful in any way possible. First off, when the millwork was scheduled to be delivered, Mike came to our house to accept the delivery, inspect the contents, and help move them into the garage. We didn?t have to worry about moving any items around the house to accommodate the work, as Mike and his crew did it all with care. The quality of work was exceptional. This wasn?t a crew that just started cutting baseboard and crown and just threw it up with a nail gun. They painstakingly located all the studs, joists, and headers in the house to ensure the trim work would stay where it was. This was especially frustrating in our home as it is one of the cookie cutter models where the studs are not on 16? centers, so finding one and marking the rest was not possible. Yet Mike and his crew took the time to find each one. And in area where there was no sufficient structure to attach, they cut and installed blocking. This is also not a crew that miters corners that you will see open up on you a few years from now. They coped all the baseboard and crown molding installations. And just to ensure they stayed closed, they glued each joint. It?s also rare to find someone you can trust your home to. My wife and I were perfectly comfortable to leave Mike and his assistants at the house while we went out. I would recommend him to anyone looking for quality trim work.

Mike was a pleasure to work with through the entire process of our project. We initially found him here on Angies List, and his excellent reviews and ratings helped sway us in his direction. I emailed him first, and the response was very prompt. Within a week (our schedule was hectic), he was at our home and walking through everything we wanted done. He was very thorough, and took photos of each area he would be working on for reference, and took detailed measurements as well. The whole consultation took about an hour, and was pain free. We received a working quote about 1.5 weeks later (we had exchanged a few emails confirming details in the interim), and his pricing was great, especially compared to some other quotes we had already received. Mike stood out because he was only marginally more expensive then some others, but was using real wood trim pieces, not MDF or other types of fabricated trim pieces. The entire project consisted of the following tasks: - Coffered ceiling in our dining room - Wainscot and chair rail in our downstairs powder room - Crown molding in our guest bedroom - Wainscot and chair rail up both sides of our stairs, and then extending to the second floor and moving around the landing/hallway - Custom built book case that tied in to the wainscot/chair rail - Crown molding inside the tray in our master bedroom After we signed our contract, and provided the deposit (material cost only for the very first project task he would start), he was able to begin work within a week. Once Mike started working, he made steady progress and was complete in about 8 days, and everything looked fantastic. We decided to go with his subcontractor for our painting needs, which that cost is also in the "cost of service" listed above. Jerry (the painter) provided good service, and his prices were consistent with some other vendors we had approached. Overall, my wife and I are extremely satisfied with all of the work that Mike did for us, and we're in the process of planning out some additional work for him to do in the upstairs of our home (more wainscot and chair rail to tie everything together). You can't go wrong choosing Mike at Finish Carpentry Services.

I had a wonderful experience working with Mr. Siegrist. He arrived promptly for our first appointment and brought a beautiful portfolio of his work for me to review, taking care to flag certain projects and design details that he thought may work well in our design. He spent a fair amount of time taking detailed measurements and photographs of the space, and a few days later, he provided me with a design proposal including drawings, material descriptions, and estimates. When the initial proposal exceeded my allotted budget, he worked with me to identify areas where we could make modifications to the design and/or materials in order to bring the cost within my budget. Once we finalized the design, Mr. Siegrist provided me with a written contract that we reviewed and signed prior to any work being done, and I gave him a deposit for the materials. He purchased the materials immediately and asked if he might be able to come over before the job was scheduled to begin, so that he might set up his mobile workshop and deliver the materials. He set up a canopy in my yard, along with his work bench and supplies, and he did so neatly and taking care not to disturb the surroundings. Mr. Siegrist worked diligently to complete the work, and upon finishing the job, he cleaned up his mobile work site completely. He was very polite and was immediately responsive to all text, email, and phone communications throughout the project. He is very detailed in his work, taking care even with (for instance) molding joints in the back of a closet that will rarely, if ever, be seen-- they were perfectly measured and constructed.

I wrote Michael Siegrist of Finish Carpentry Services and in the message I told him if I didnt answer my phone please leave a voice mail. He called me at 1:06 am. Not knowing if a friend was in trouble at such an hour I answered amazed it was a contractor getting back to me. He said he thought it would go to my voicemail. We scheduled an appointment for last friday at 10am.... He was late for the appointment. About 10:15 I text him and messaged me back a few minutes later, he said he was running late. Once at my home I was impressed. Seemed to know a good amount about the work. Gave me a quote of $255 to Case 3 windows, not even all the way cased out mind you. It seemed like a fair offer. While at the house I asked him about crown molding in a few rooms and wainscoting. He couldnt give me a quote or measure anything because he said he was late and needed to get back to work at another property. I was informed I would receive an email soon with a final quote. 2 days later I text him asking if I would receive and email and he said later sunday evening..... Monday night I had to ask again. When It came it was for 472.00 - a 50.00 discount which he didnt mention the day of the walkthrough. with a final quote of 422$ he told me he forgot to add for tax of the materials and some work time from moving to work station into the house. During the walkthrough he told me labor would be 60 dollars a window (180$) and the rest was material (75$) A difference in labor estimate that looks to be around 160$ .......... Did I add almost 3 windows? *** In response to Michaels reply. Just so everything is clear Michael was already late when I messaged him about the appointment at 10:10 . He replied at 10:18 "running a few minutes behind. It was around 10:25 when he called me about directions. I was also told normally in new construction you are charged around 45 dollars a window for casing. He told me he would charge around 60 for me, plus materials. He called got price quotes on materials while at the house. And came up with 255.

Response from Finish Carpentry Services
I would first like to say that above customer was polite throughout all communication. I was working late, drafting and typing bids, the night I received an email from Angieslist informing me that a member had sent a message using the message center. It was about 1:00 AM when I signed in to Angie’s List business center to read the message. I was quite tired and I had a difficult time reading the small print of the message. I incorrectly read the message to say “I don’t answer my cell phone, please leave a voice mail message”. The customer said he would “love to be able to get an estimate on Friday if possible, it’s the only day I’m free for the next month”. Because it was 1:00 AM Thursday I decided to call and leave a voicemail message. Much to my surprise the customer answered the phone. I felt very bad about bothering him at such a late hour and sincerely apologized. We did, however, agree at that time for a Friday 10:00 AM appointment to meet. I left the job I was working on Friday morning to meet with the customer. I used my cell phone navigation app to find his residence but navigation was not directing me to correct location. I called customer to get help with directions and finally found his location. He told me his friends and relatives were also having difficulty finding his new home because apparently the address was not yet registered with Google Maps. This problem caused me to be late for our scheduled appointment. Customer asked me to provide a quote only for doing trim for 3 windows initially. He said he had plans for crown molding and wainscot and I said I could measure to provide a quote for those items while I was working on windows. Customer asked for a ballpark figure for completing trim for the windows, but I hesitated because I like to work on proposals at home when I am free from distractions and can completely focus on all aspects of the job. He asked again for ballpark figure so I quickly put together some prices I used for new construction trim work, which is quite different from remodel work. I emailed my portfolio for customer to view and called his attention to discount coupon which appears on my ad. I was one day late in sending my proposal as I had quite a backlog of bids to work on. I did significantly underestimate the labor cost when I gave “ballpark” figure at our first meeting. I am sure that is why he thought first quote was too high so I reduced price and included discount as I did for the first quote. I do not understand how this customer would try to hold me to my “ballpark figure” when I told him I needed to review my figures before sending a formal proposal I contacted customer by text and his response was that he had received a quote from another service provider which was closer to my “ballpark” figure. At that point I assumed he had chosen another service provider so I wished him good luck with his project. It is unfortunate that there were several misunderstandings during communication with this customer, but I felt that I provided a fair price for the level of quality I provide in my trim work, and other types of woodwork. All other reviews from customers whom I actually performed work for will confirm this.

I've been very happy with the fellow. Michael is his name. I'm calling him back today to see and finalize something. They did work on 2 major projects, one was to replace a header on the garage. They did an excellent job. I have a heat pump stand on the side of the house and it was collapsing as it was poorly built to begin with. They rebuilt the stand and did an outstanding job with that. I highly recommend them.

He is professional and quite price competitive.

After using five people who claimed to be carpenters, it was a pleasant surprise to find Mike. After having to redo four of the five so called carpenter?s work and the fifth being somewhat shoddy, I decided I would take one more stab at finding a quality carpenter. It was the best decision I made. Mike surpassed my expectations with his knowledge, dedication to the smallest details, and general likeability. I will use Mike again in the future and highly recommend him to all who want their tees crossed and eyes dotted. He completely built our new fireplace mantle from scratch and it looks great. He also removed and reinstalled three doors previously installed by one of the two big hardware stores. They were neither square nor level, but were perfect when he was finished. I can only give Mike an A because I could not find an A+ rating. If you want the job done right the first time, call Mike.

Mike did both interior and exterior work on our home while it was being built in 2006-2007. He installed interior doors and applied casing to the doors as well. He also did a wonderful job on the crown molding. He did every room minus the laundry room. He also built a stair case leading to the F.O.G (room over the garage), stained grade living room cabinets (8ft to left and right of the fire place) and a stained grade mantle to match the cabinets. He installed all of the bathroom accessories and did exterior wood work. He built all of the exterior hand rails around our deck too. The deck goes the entire length of the house. He also built all of the panels around the foundation (including the back and the side of the house). He also helped us put together some furniture. He even had to cut some (interior) doors while working on the F.R.O.G room over the garage. We have 4 arches in the entry way to the living and dinning room that he built. I think the work looks great. He is willing to go out of his way to please the client he is working with and he is punctual as well.

Mike arrived to inspect the room and give us an estimate. There were no surprises on the final bill. He was always punctual, very detail oriented, a perfectionist with his work. He listened to what we wanted and added recommendations based on his years of experience doing finish carpentry in high end houses at places such as Kiawah, Seabrook and downtown Charleston. He was very neat and always cleaned up at the end of the day before leaving and checked with our schedules to coordinate the best time to come over. The work took a few weeks as we did add other jobs but we were extremely pleased with the finished product. It continues to look beautiful without a single crack or seperation in any of the mouldings. We would definitely use Mike again and highly recommend him to friends!
Description of Work: We have a very large room that needed repairs on the crown moulding and casings around several sunroom doors. Large gaps had repeatedly appeared in the joints due to prior incorrect instalation despite having it repaired a few times prior to us calling Mike. He was referrerd to us by a friend who had beautiful finish carpentry done in their house. We were so pleased with his work that we ended up also having him apply casings around two large openings leading from the sunroom to other rooms and installing trim mouldings around the perimeter of two large trey ceilings.

The work was done on time and the quality is second to none. To this day we are asked all the time by people visiting our home, who did the trim work. We have had several of our friends use the company to fix problems that were left behind by other wood contractors. We have used the company on five other occasions to add more projects to our home with the same results. We would recommend them to any one wanting top quality wood work done.
Description of Work: This company did all the finished carpentry work for our new home of approx. 5000 square feet. This included all trim, crown molding, book cases and doors.
