We had massive water damage underneath our house, due to poorly-installed HVAC ducts that had been sweating against our subfloors for several years. Insurance was a largely a no-go, since it was condensation related, so budget was a big factor. Still, I was insistent that the job be done right. I bid the job out to about five or six companies and selected Commonwealth for a couple of reasons. First, Mike's recommendations included no short cuts. He did not suggest that we could lower costs by making compromises here or there -- he said, to do it right, here's what we have to do. Second, he was scrupulously honest. When we were talking about possible insurance claims, he made it clear that he would not misrepresent the extent or cause of the damage in order to get a larger claim. This was critically important to me; anyone willing to cheat an insurance company wouldn't think twice about cheating me.
Basically, we went down to dirt in parts of the house and had to rebuild from the ground up. The biggest part of the job was in the kitchen, which had to be completely demolished and rebuilt. When Mike's original kitchen guy came in to high, he found another one that was able to work within our budget and did beautiful work. We took advantage of the opportunity to knock a wall out of our galley kitchen and replace it with a really big granite peninsula. It completely changed the entire space. I wish I'd done it years ago.
All of his subs were fantastic. We stayed in the house during the entirety of the project, which was probably 3.5 months (not sure I'd do that again), and they all left the site very clean every day, even sealing up the holes in the subfloor with plywood. The only sub I was not 100 percent happy with was his floor guys, who I think finished the floors in sections rather than all at once, but Mike sent them back and insisted that they would keep coming back until I was satisfied.
The job took a good bit longer than we originally projected, but this job seemed to grow as we went along. At one point, we discovered a roof leak that we decided meant a new roof, which Mike was able to do at a rate that was right in line with others to whom I'd bid the job. Bottom line, Commonwealth did a super job. Honest, good work ethic, no shortcuts, high quality -- the job will be done right, at a competitive rate. We were very satisfied. For the first time in a long time, I can sleep at night knowing that our home is on good solid ground. I'd use them again in a heartbeat.
I could not have asked for a better outcome. We discovered one small tile in the border area to one of the bathrooms that was too high, causing pain to anyone walking on it with bare feet. When I contacted the company, they ensured that someone would be there the next morning to fix the tile. And they were - right on time.
These are some of the most polite and knowledgeable workmen that I have hired for renovations.
I felt the price was a bit high, considering that we provided the tile and grout. But, since I had worked with this company in the past, it felt that it would be money well-spent. No regrets.
Always in a job like this, there are repairs that need to be made that weren't anticipated in the bid and original plan, but they were all handled in a fair and timely way.
The crews did quality work and we felt very comfortable having them in our home. Mike and Logan did a great job of making sure any problems were corrected and the job was completed to our satisfaction.
All in all, a very professional job, a pleasure to deal with, and we would definitely hire them again if we need any more work done!
I will not hesitate to use Mike and Commonwealth Contracting, LLC for future work in our condo, including replacing the old floors with new wood flooring. We also own a rental house which will need work in the future and I plan on using Commonwealth Contracting for those projects.
"I apologize for the negative experience that this member had with my company. My associate was involved in a traffic accident and was unable to make his appointment, but that's no excuse for not calling this customer back to schedule another appointment. Due to the amount of vehicles/trailers that myself and my crew drive around all day and the amount of driving that we do, traffic accidents are an unfortunate, but rather common occurrence and this past year has been especially bad in that regard. So, I would like to extend another apology to this member and any other members who have had to deal with delays due to myself or any of my associates being involved in traffic incidents. As a foot note, I would like to mention that most of these accidents have involved other vehicles/heavy machinery hitting our vehicles/trailers; although a couple were our fault and I've addressed those incidents appropriately."
I had to rent a POD for my furniture during the flooring installation and it stayed in my driveway for weeks after the job was over.
I was told that tile was the way to go in the bathroom and I needed to go to Lowes and pick it out. I did that but when it was time to start the tile job Logan had not picked it up so I had to start all over again choosing tile. It was assumed I would know that I knew I had to pick out the grout as well as the tub, faucet, sink, countertop, etc. I had no idea how to do this without measurements and guidance on what would work and how to stay in budget.
I havent dealt with contractors often but I have had flooring installed on two prior occasions. both times I chose the product I wanted, it was ordered , and placed in my home for acclimation. Then the work began. I guess I thought someone would walk through this with me since the quote was based on price allowances and measurements on each item in the bid. I ended up buying my own sink, faucet, and shower head after being so frustrated with them.
The project manager (Logan) is very enthusiastic and positive when you meet him . He told me he was hands on but was actually nowhere to be found on the job during installation. communicating with him was difficult. He didn't respond to texts. I had to forward them to Mike and when he responded I felt like somehow I was to blame for not understanding how things work. I was told that they do this work every day and customers know to pick out what they want. I'm not sure about that.
- The two guys who did the actual work (Auty and Johnny) are knowledgeable and talented carpenters and if not for them and the fact that they intervened for me several times, i'm not sure when the jobs would have been completed.
- While I wish them every success, I cannot write anything other than my truth here. I believe the business needs better administration and communication with customers in order to last for the long term. I think a sit-down meeting at the outset to review product choices and price point would be valuable. And, a project manager who is on site.
This is a rental unit, and we had removed it from the market for 2 weeks to complete this and other remodeling projects. This master bath project involved removal of a small triangular shower stall, removal of an old 5 sided jaccuzzi tub, and painting walls and replacing floor tiles where the old shower was). The new shower is also five sided and tiled. The tile folks did a fabulous job and gave us some good ideas for laying of the chosen wall tiles, based upon their experience in this area. We are thrilled with the results. The removal of old materials was quick and as clean as could be. The contractors had covered floors and other areas to prevent dust contamination. In addition, they closed the bathroom door while working on dusty projects. All floors exiting the condo were cleaned every day at the end of the workday.
The workmen showed up as promised, and although I worried constantly that they would not complete the job before the new renters arrived, the project was completed by noon on the final day (with the exception of the glass shower doors, which were installed within 10 days).
One item that was not in the original proposal and added to the cost was replacement of the water heater. However, when they went to turn the water off to begin the bathroom renovation, we discovered that the water heater was severely rusted and ready to leak. I asked if they could fix it, and they did (with a new one), within a few hours.
Here are the reasons I would hire this company again: 1) The owner, Mike, is so easy to work with. He answers questions and phone calls immediately and has the business experience to solve any problems that may arise; 2) the crew are the hardest working and friendliest folks that I have ever worked with. Neighbors were even asking for their numbers to consider future remodeling projects in the building. And they made an incredible team. At times, there were 5 guys working in that bathroom at the same time. These guys worked like a well-oiled team and their senses of humor never failed to make us smile.
The only glitch we had was that the painters chipped a large mirror when removing it or reinstalling it. When we noted it, Mike and his crew immediately came up with a solution to frame the mirror to hide the chip. It was a perfect and prompt solution.
If you want a high-quality remodel, done with patience and attention to detail, this is a solid choice. I will hire them again in a heartbeat.
