Insisted that he had to do areas of floor that did not need to be done (floor is to be covered by carpet). Had 3 other estimates done. The cost estimate from Ace Wood Flooring was 3x higher than all other three estimates. I will be paying $250 for this work by another "A" grade Angie's list provider.

Unfortunately we can't please all customers. We were not willing to refinish just the sides of each step and not the centers then offerering you a discount because we did not do the centers. We do not consider that very professional. It does not seem probable that a floor company would make 4 trips to one's home for $250.00. Most professional companies require a minimum service fee. The project went very smoothly. Ace responded extremely quickly to a request to re-finish about 1200 sf of flooring in a house I recently purchased. I had not moved in yet so there were no issues with furniture. They quoted the job on a Friday and had the floors sanded and urethane coated and completely finished by Tuesday. They sent crews in on Sat and Sunday to complete the work. They had a high degree of professionalism and I trusted the crews that worked at the house. There are some minor issues that still need to be addressed, but these are very minor (some areas that were hard to access had been sanded but not completely coated with the 2nd urethane coat). Overall, a very positive experience.

The company was very responsive to our initial phone call coming later that day and provided us with an estimate of the cost They were also able to schedule us the following week . They were very punctual on the days they did the work and finished on time and in accordance with the initial discussions My disappointment with their service is in three areas . First the amount of dust they generated was far beyond our expectations . It took us 5 hours to clean up having to wipe down every wall and flat surface on the first level and many surfaces and furnishings on the upper levels . I understood there would be dust generated by the sanding but not like this . Second was the lack of follow up. Once the workers left on the last day I never heard from the company again . I had recently dealt with a contractor on some repairs to my home due to winter ice dams . He followed up either in person or on the phone after every sub completed their work . It made it very easy to deal with any issues and have them corrected As it is I have several issues with the job Ace did . There is a small section in the middle of the floor that does not appear to have had a finish coat applied I wouldn't even mention it if it was off to the side but it is quite visible In addition there are several areas under and around the kitchen cabinets that are very rough and do not appear to be finished properly . Finally when my wife paid the worker on the last day he did not give her a reciept Every sub I paid in conjunction with the aforementioned repairs handed me a receipt after I gave them a check . Perhaps they wiil be mailing one Hopefully that is the case so I will have some record of the work performed

1. Unfortunately we are only 99% dust free. We sanded 500ft. We removed over 50lbs. of dust. As you stated you knew there would be 'some" dust. Wiping residual dust off the walls is standard operational procedures when you have floors sanded. 2. At Ace Wood Flooring we do not use sub-contractors. When we finish a job and collect payment upon completion it is assumed our transaction is complete. If there are any follow-up issues we expect the customer to call us. As you stated "the company was very responsive." You did NOT call us with any work quality issues. So now that we have been made aware of our imperfections we shall contact you. 3. You wrote a check to Ace Wood Flooring. There is no better receipt than that. We also sent an email. For some reason if you have not received this email we shall send again. Thanks Ace(Troy)

Absolutely fabulous! The installers, Jim and Andy, were professional, courteous, efficient and neat. They had to remove my old carpeting, remove the molding and install the pre-finished wood. They also had to remove all my furniture. They arrived at 8:30 as planned and were finished by 1:00. My den was cleaner when they left then when they arrived. All the furniture was put back when they were finished cleaning and buffing the floor. The floor is just beautiful, and the whole process was easier than I ever anticipated. I'm looking forward to having the hardwoods installed in my living room/dining room. I can't wait!
Description of Work: I wanted to install hardwoods in my den first and then the living room and dining room. After visiting their showroom and feeling very confident that they knew what they were doing, I made an appointment for them to come to my house and provide an estimate. Troy arrived on schedule for the estimate. The estimate was reasonable so we then scheduled the installation for the den. They were extremely flexible in scheduling a date.

Let me first say that Troy the owner was very responsive to my needs and phone calls. He came out that night for an estimate and was knowledgeable about wood floors. The job was also started and finished in 5 days. The floors look good. Those are the only positives I can give about this operation unfortunately. Troy warned us that there would be some scuffs on my baseboards, which I worked on for quite a while to look good in the first place, but I was aware of this when getting estimates for the floors. Let me make it clear that "touch ups" was an understatement. The baseboards are destroyed. Not only do they have scuff marks but the paint was totally taken off in many places and there are yellow stains all over them. There is also yellow staining on my window trim and door trim. Was the poly splashed around or something? How does poly get up to a door frame? I had my kitchen done by another provider and experienced none of this. As far as the stairway, once again there is yellowing all over the risers, along with yellow drips down the banisters that we also put ALOT of work into. I'm afraid that touching up wasn't enough and I need to re-paint ALL of the baseboards, ALL of the stair risers, and even some of my window/door trim. I expected some dust on my walls but I did not expect to have some pretty big scuff marks on my once again freshly painted walls. How does this happen? Was the drum sander rammed into the walls or something? There is also a little bit of dripped poly down the wall near the banister. Good thing I have extra paint. One more area I need to cover is the cleanliness of the workers. They were very friendly and professional but I was upset at some of the things left in my house. My toilet had used un-flushed toilet paper which is disgusting, dirt all over my sink, dirt on my walls and tile, and my hand towels were filthy. There was also a dirty shirt thrown on my bulkhead door, soda cans left on a few of my windowsills, and used sandpaper left thrown around and not thrown away. I can see why the company gets the job done in 5 days because its clearly a rush job. My floors look good, but I didn't expect all this extra work once it was completed. Because of this I cannot recommend ace floor nor would I use them again.

LEAVING A CUSTOMERS HOME MESSY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Glad to here the quality of floor sanding is good. Ace sanded almost 1000ft and stairs in a freshly painted home. As was explained the painting should be done after the floors. Ace has a blog dedicated to just this topic. New paint easily scuffs and peels when not painted by a professional. What happened to the other company that sanded one room in your house? Thanks Ace(Troy)

Living room 13' x 17' wood floor was in fair condition...no deep gouges or stains. 2 men arrived promptly at 8:30 and began work right away. They were polite and personable and they worked straight through to 11:45. They sanded the edges of the room with small size machines while on their knees. That included under my baseboards and into a small coat closet. Then, one of the gentlemen used a large floor sander to do the main part of the floor. When done, everything was vacuumed thoroughly, including the adjoining hallway because dust has filtered under my doorway. Then a first coat of sealant was applied...brushed onto the edges and rolled onto the central area. The next morning, again promptly at 8:30, 2 men arrived and started work immediately. They lightly sanded the entire floor and then applied the second coat of sealant. I had to work that day so cannot comment on their personalities, but when I arrived home, the floor looked fantastic! I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the service and the work. To Troy and crew...you rock!

Not only does Troy, the owner, always answer the phone, he gets back to you in a timely way with costs and timing -- and then his crew ACTUALLY SHOWS UP WHEN PROMISED. The price is fair and the quality of their work is outstanding. Ace has installed and refinished a number of wood floors in our home using a variety of materials and has done a fantastic job with each. We did some of the work (2 levels in our house) 4 years ago, and another major project replacing the floor in our foyer and home office just now. His crew is efficient, professional, and clearly enjoy their work. Jason was our crew leader for each of our Ace engagements and is a real pleasure to work with. We get many compliments on our beautiful floors thanks to Ace.

They prepared the floor on Thursday > Total of 3 Hours or so, and they laid the floor on Friday > 4 hours or so. By Saturday we were enjoying a great new Hardwood Floor in my Family Room!!! I wish all contractors worked this professionally and efficiently! No problem recommending to anyone!!! Monday the 10th - Troy from ACE came to my house to look at our floor My wife and myself went to Troy's Shop in Smithfield, RI to pick out the floor and set the date Thursday the 13th - 3 Man Crew came and ripped up the rug and tile, leveled the floor, cleaned and laid down the lines. (3 - 4 Hours) Friday the 14th - 4 Man Crew came and laid the floor (4 - 5 hours) Saturday the 15th -- We had all furniture moved back in and were enjoying the room!!!!

Below is a copy of our email correspondence from oldest to newest: "Hello, As you are aware we are going to have you do our floors starting Oct 29th as we mad plans to be away during the process. I will need a signed formal agreement along with a copy of your State of CT. Contractors license and a copy of your ins policy naming us the secondary insured. I just switched insurance company's, and they are requesting this info. Once I receive a signed copy of the agreement I will sign it and send a copy back over to you. We look forward to working with you. The contract should be addressed to: XXXX. Thank You, XXXX" --------------------------------------------- "Regrettably we are not going to provide this info. Please call someone else. We are not interested in the job. Thx Ace" ----------------------------------------------- "What kind of professional cant provide a formal contract, copy of a license and certificate of ins???? I had a feeling you were a shyster. When you have been in construction as long as I have you can spot them a mile away. I do a lot of work in this area and recommend a lot of people you wont be one of them. I will postpone the job until I find someone legitimate. Its sad, so unprofessional."
Description of Work: We scheduled an appointment with the provider to refinish our hardwood floors; something we've waited many years to do. The provider came out and quickly measured the house, wrote a price down on a tri-fold brochure and left. We called him back to ask him if he could provide us with a formal proposal with all materials to be used. He sent us a basic email instead of a formal proposal identifying the product and what our expectations of their services were. I felt it was a bit unusual not to have a signed agreement with a licensed state of Connecticut contractor. I did notify him last week that we wanted him to start the work on Oct 9th and so we made plans to go on vacation while they did the job. I asked him to schedule a date for work and he said it was out of the ordinary to schedule so far in advance. Being a project manager in CT for many years, I felt uncomfortable with Ace's whole estimation / scheduling process. I contacted them today via email requesting a signed formal agreement, copy of the state of CT contractor's license, and a copy of his insurance policy naming me, the homeowner, secondary insured. I explained to him that I needed this information and that we were prepared to leave on the 29th of this month so they could start the job. We made arrangements to go away for a week in an effort to let them start the job. Within minutes I received a response to my email stating that Ace would not be able to provide this information and that they did not want to do the job. He said verbatim "go find someone else."

I was told that they would arrive at 8:30 AM. The job would take between 5 - 6 hours. Two young men arrived at 8:15. They were very professional. They allowed me to peak in at times and watch. They removed the carpet and all the baseboards. One stayed in the room, the other one set up the saw horses and the saw on the front lawn. One stayed in the room and the other one did all the cutting. They were done by 1. They cleaned up so well that you didn't know they were ever here. I would recommend them highly. I am planning to use them again. I want to change all my floors to hardwood over time. The only thing I am still waiting on is a final bill stating it was "paid in full"

I didn't use Ace, because when I said I was considering hardwood in the kitchen/hallway area, Troy immediately said 'don't use wood in a kitchen - use LVT'. I was a little put off by that comment since they're wood floor installers. I know many people with hardwood floors in their kitchens and they look beautiful and seem to hold up well to all kinds of traffic. I was also considering LVT, but I felt as though Troy didn't really want to do the job unless I was going to commit to LVT.

This updated review applies to the entire company. The owner answers his phone quickly and tells you all will be done and all is fine. This is true in a way but the crew who did my work was much later than I expected which messes up plans. Details below. I called to complain about the crew and spoke to Jason who said he would address it. I hope he did. I gave him my credit card info on the phone and I received no receipt until I called Troy a week or more later. He sent it immediately via email. But on it he listed the wrong rooms...No mention of bedrooms and they did not touch my kitchen floor. The subtotal on the bill was $1170 and the total was $1175 - just a sloppy error but my final thoughts about this company are that they are a bit rushed and a bit sloppy. The young men on the crew need better customer service skills. I would use the company again only with supervision provided by a company supervisor or ME. Initially, Troy came the day I called to give me an estimate for the largest room and front hall. $650 with a senior discount. He recommended urethane instead of poly urethane and said it was smelly but quick and better for a rental apartment. I thought he said it could be walked on a few hours after being done but I may have been mistaken. The crew twice told me 6 hours so I went with that. The day of the work I expected the crew at 8:30 AM. Troy came from nearby to explain that they were running late and would be here soon. When seeing the apartment empty, other rooms were in so-so condition so Troy offered me a deal to do the other 2 bedrooms and hall for and additional $500. I took the deal. I told him how to lock the front door from inside and work to the back of the house through the kitchen. I had to leave and left the back doors unlocked but closed (I rarely leave the house wide open) Upstairs apartment was locked. I arrived home at 2 PM and the crew had not yet arrived, Back doors were wide open. ?? Maybe I did it..but I'm not in the habit. I called Troy who said they would finish it today and then was gone from the phone line...Soon 3 vans of young men arrived...Various dress besides their red uniform T shirts. It was a very humid day. Their average age seemed to be 19-22. The noise upstairs wasn't bad and I left them alone. They left at about 6 PM. When I went to check the front door, it was unlocked so they hadn't locked it from inside, BUT they needed air and I was home. They left a lawn chair on my front steps blocking my front door exit so it was almost difficult to get out. When I checked the house the floors looked great and they had been careful with the baseboards and newly painted walls. (My painter had to come before the floors were done). BUT they had not closed a swinging door to the kitchen and dust filled the kitchen counters, stove (not covered) and anything in the kitchen, and dust went all the way up the back stairs to my back hall (another door which could have been closed. One more discovery, an unflushed toilet overnight, really gross. These are boys and need better training in courtesy in someone else's home The second crew of two young men arrived at 2 PM the next day to buff floors and vacuum. The floors look great and they left a fan to blow the odor out of a window. They did not pick up the pile of dirt on the kitchen floor, did not wipe the kitchen counters except edges - did not pick up anything to wipe down but went around...did not remove grids over gas burners on stove and did only the edges..Did not reach to the wall on any of the counters. Did not clean back hall or back stairs. They did however leave my outdoor chairs stacked up and not blocking my door. I spoke to Jason, who manages the crews, the next day and he assured me he would address my concerns about the crews' lack of consideration, i.e the toilet, and leaving things unfinished in the clean-up department and preventing the dust from going so far in the first place...close doors, put up a plastic barrier...

This is a lot to address. Regrettably although plastic was placed in certain areas it has been our experience that some level of micro dust will still get through. Also we state the better you prepare for us the cleaner we are. i.e.. All personnel effects should be moved. We will not move or touch anything that does not belong to us. We will use this opportunity to rework our sales pitch to make ourselves clearer in the future. Thanks Ace

This was a major job. We did the whole house while we were living in it. We had to do it in 3 phases, moving furniture between different levels of the house, into the garage, sleeping on the floor, etc. ACE are totally no nonsense, no ripoff, no hidden stuff. I really appreciate this. Troy came out and priced the job, explained what they would do, the products they use, and left a quote. It was a competitive quote (not the best) but I liked his straightforward approach. The whole job took 3 weeks. After the first phase we decided to go with one extra coat, which meant we had to reschedule all the subsequent phases. No problem for Troy, he stuck to his original quote, gave a price for the extra work (which I thought was very reasonable) and then stuck with those quotes. He employs several crews, so different people showed up at different days, but this was not a problem from my point of view. They were all punctual and courteous. They are not Michelangelos, and one or two times I had some issues, for example, sanding was not carried all the way to a baseboard, or a coat was spotty in some places. Not a major problem, I talked to Troy, and he sent out some crews the next day to fix the problem. Overall, I would say this company offers very good service at a very competitive price. You have to keep track of what's happening, and you should not expect miracles, but with their no nonsense attitude I would hire them again. Another thing is that Troy answers his phone right away, so there is no waiting and passing messages, things get resolved right away. I wish there were more businesses around with this kind of service and attitude.

Crew arrived on time, explained what was going to happen, completed day one of a 2 day job. Let me know the do's and don'ts for the overnight hours. Came back the next day, did the 2nd coat. It was such a nice, clean process, all went according to plan, I couldn't be happier with the end results. The only problem I encountered was a couple of small missed spots. I called, Troy came out to look at it, called in the crew and I got the entire floor done with a 3rd coat at no additional cost, no questions asked. They stand by their work and product!. I will be having them come for three other rooms in the future. I will not use any other company, I am so thrilled with the look and get so many compliments on it.

They were very professional but were going to charge me an arm and a leg to sand my floors and do repairs. oh but they have financing! It shouldn't be that expensive if you have to finance it! I just had my place done and it was a much better deal then ACE. With ACE you are paying for the name brand.

Floors were originally painted which a number of companies wouldn't bother with. Ace gave me a good estimate and were on time and fast. One floor absorbed more finish than others and needed another coat. The guys came back and put on another coat at no extra charge. A little more clean-up than I expected, but otherwise a great job!

Ace does a wonderful job. The only problem is that they don't remove carpet, even for a fee so it can be really difficult to get help doing that. Plus I was disappoint that there aren't any tools that can sand the risers. Other than that, Ace is great.

Thanks for the review> Addressing some of your concerns. Ace does remove and dispose of carpet everyday. In your case we recommended you try to remove and dispose of the carpet yourself because Ace has a minimum charge. In your case we were not sure if the floor underneath the carpet was salvageable. We recommended you could save money by doing it yourself. Also unfortunately they have not invented the technology to sand and refinish stair risers. As for that we are sorry. Thanks Ace
