Paul works fast and hard and he completed the tasks on our list in less time than he predicted it would take. He charges by the hour + materials fees and a $15. travel fee. (We are about 16 mi from his base.) Worth every penny!
Description of Work: This was our second time to have Paul Chaset do repairs for us and we were very pleased again. He responded very promptly to my email inquiry and came on a Saturday to go thru our list. When he returned to do the work, several weeks later, he had all the materials necessary to complete the repairs (except for some that we preferred to provide.) The list of 20 repairs included recaulking a tub, replacing a doorbell light/cover, making custom-made wood covers for our sump pit and a basement window, replacing magnetic weatherstripping on a metal storm door, patching a 2" hole in drywall, replacing the shade on a skylight and securing the screen on it, stablizing a loose downspout outside, and securing a part of our garage door that kept falling off.

Paul responded right away to my call, we set up a date for him to come over to measure the planter, and his estimate arrived by email a couple of days later. On the actual day of the work he showed up right on the dot of 8:30 and set to work. I was very impressed by his professionalism, work ethic, and warm personality. Also, he did a first-rate job on the planter; and we are very pleased with his work. When he disassembled the old planter, he found a dead rodent and one that was very much alive. He handled that with grace and humor. I would highly recommend him to anyone, and am compiling a list for him to do some work in my unit.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced wooden planter in back of condo building.

Went very well. I instantly liked Paul, and my 15 mo old son REALLY liked him. Paul worked all day at $80/hr (which I thought was expensive, but worth it. The only thing that I didn't like was that he had explained what he was going to do for the baby gate, which was putting two small pieces of wood into the frame so that it hung correctly, but when I went to look at it there was one long ugly piece of wood instead - much more conspicuous that I expected and would have liked. However, when I talked to him about it he said "well, it's safe" and I couldn't really argue. That was the only problem I had. He had taken the time to meet with me ahead of time. He even fixed a lock mechanism inside the door (we have locks from 1930s). He did a good job and I trust him.
Description of Work: Installed a baby gate Hung 2 frames Made 6 doors closed - none needed to be rehung - it was tricky custom made a styrofoam cap for the attic fan and installed one for over the attic door secured bookcases to the wall

He came on time, performed the work, and called to make sure all was well after the work was done.
Description of Work: We have used Paul on Call before and have always been pleased. He returns calls right away, and also does email. This time we had him put a stair railing up for our basement. He did a great job as always. Our dog likes him too! In the past we have had him do bathroom tile repair, kitchen sink repairs, and also screen door repairs. He is professional, kind, and a real pleasure to work with.

Just finishing wrapping my Christmas Gifts and putting everything in the stockings for my children and grandchildren when the shelf over the fireplace collapsed sending everything to the floor. There is a cement foundation. We couldn't fix it. Called Paul first thing this morning and came within a couple of hours. He did a fabulous job and rescued my Christmas Eve. He also took care of my upstairs fireplace that needed fixing.

Paul responds right away when I call or email, and is very flexible about when he comes (important because my husband has a home psychiatric office and noise is an issue). He is pleasant to have around, and he does a good job of listening, making a list and planning the repairs efficiently so they don't take more time than necessary. He's good at figuring things out--rooting around in the basement paint cans to find the matching color, for instance, when he needs to touch up something. He's good at figuring out sensible solutions (blocks of wood when it would be expensive to replace a missing leg on a sofa), how to keep a screen in a door with a couple of metal tabs, how to replace rotting boards on a deck without redoing too many when the deck is going to be replaced before long. He is not cheap, but I have found him well worth the price.
Description of Work: This time he hung a coatrack on home office wall and replaced and painted a rotting closet door frame, fixed the leg on the sofa, and replaced and repainted rotting deck boards.

He was quick to follow-up for an estimate, punctual and professional during the estimate, and very thorough in his work. On his way out, he took the time to fix my front door which had a lock that didn't line up. (No additional cost). When I had a question after the work was done, Paul followed up on multiple occasions to ensure I was satisfied with his work. ABOSOLUTELY. A+

Paul responded to my call quickly and arranged to examine the job at our convenience. He took extensive notes as we explained what we were looking for and listened to what we wanted. We gave us some good advice and followed through with his promise of a quotation very quickly. Although Paul's price was much higher than other quotes we had received, we were convinced by his professionalism and attention to detail. He scheduled the job for us within a week and showed up early when we explained that we both had to go to work early in the morning. When I got home that evening, the job had been done to a very high quality and the bill waiting for us was for less than the original quote. The job had gone better than he had expected and he had adjusted the bill accordingly. We were pleased.
Description of Work: Paul recaulked and repaired the wall/counter seams in our kitchen and table top. He corrected a botched job by the homeowner in the process. Paul also replaced the grout at the floor/wall joints in our bathroom and again repaired the shoddy work of the homeowner by removing bad caulk and recaulking the entire tub area. He also performed some minor repair to several tiles that had cracked by cleverly filling the cracks with caulk. The result is a much better look.

Process went very well, the plumber and we had work to do before the retiling. I know Paul would've come sooner if we needed the toilet, which we did not. As always, scheduling is difficult the more professionals are involved. We were very satisfied and appreciated the tips that Paul gave us. I always want the job to cost less, but believe Paul does very good work and is worth the fee.
Description of Work: Paul provided a rapid estimate/assessment of work to be done to repair, regrout bathroom floor tile around toilet whose flange was replaced. He also coached us in what we could do ourselves to save time and money. It took him awhile to get back to do the work as he was busy. He added cement on top of subflooring to level.

Paul was extremely professional and easy to work with. I called him on a Sunday night and was utterly surprised when he answered. Paul came out right away to provide an estimate on the work and was honest about what he could/could not do. We scheduled the work for later that week, and it went great. The caulking looked beautiful and he even fixed other things as a courtesy, earlier than anticipated. He was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. I would highly recommend him to others.

We had a wonderful experience! I am not crazy about the tile in the foyer -- haven't been for some years -- so, I was just looking for a "quick fix." Paul came out on a Saturday for the estimate (very convenient for me). He did not give me a hard sell. On the contrary, he asked me if I liked the tile and, if not, what would I like better? When I told him that my long range plan was to put in hard wood, he then stated we could put a rug over the worn tile and I could save up to get my "dream floor." He pointed out the downside of repairing a floor that I really don't want (cost mostly). He also said that we could look around, and in this economy, might be able to find someone who could do the hard wood for a good price, and he quoted me a very reasonable figure. I was very impressed. I ultimately decided to work with the floor I have, and, again, Paul was very accommodating. He came out on a Monday holiday (Martin Luther King's Day) which again was vey convenient. He came exactly when he said he would, took the exact amount of time he estimated, did the job for the exact amount quoted, and when he left the place was immaculate. He was very nice, very professional, and the work done was great. He taped everything off for a couple of days so that we wouldn't step on where the work was done, and when I lifted the tape, you can't even tell where he put in the new grout. It matches perfectly! I couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Ceramic tiles were coming up in places in the foyer. There were some cracked tiles, too. We asked Paul to replace the broken tiles, reinforce the ones that were coming up, and regrout.

Paul responded promptly to our original email and came out to price the job. His estimate about how long until he'd be able to get to the work was right on target. He was very professional and friendly the day he came out to do the work in late December. What amazed me most, though, was his responsiveness when I emailed him (on New Years Day!) with the unfortunate news that one of the showers' caulk looked like it hadn't set properly, and was already deteriorating. He promptly responded and explained that it might have been due to dampness behind the wall (we've had problems with that). He returned a few days later and recaulked that tub at no charge. He cares more about the customer's satisfaction with the work than any person I've ever had work in my home, even contacting us a few days later to make sure that the second attempt had done the job. It looks great, and every time I see it I feel good about the whole experience! Thanks, Paul!

Paul responded promptly and professionally to schedule a time to meet for an estimate. He arrived on time and supplied a detailed estimate. I was to provide the tile for the job. I needed help deciding on a grout color. he helped to choose one. He told me he was working about a month out on the schedule. That was ok with me. The next day I called Paul to hire him for the job. He needed some lead time to order the grout. He called when it was in so we could schedule an installation date. When the install date came, Paul arrived at the time he said he would. He worked hard all day, made some very impressive miter cuts on the tile edges and kept the whole work area (including my new granite countertop) protected by taped down heavy paper. When the grouting was done, all the trash including the waste water from washing down the grout was taken by Paul. He also vaccumed the whole area inside and his work area outside before he left.

I had read great things about Paul and as I had a large "to-Do" list I called him. He said he was at a job and would get back to me that night. I waited for about a week and finally called someone else and had them do the work. Then Paul called. When I explained that I had never heard back from him and the work was already done he was very apologetic and said he hoped I would try again in the future. I did receive another call from him offering a 10% discount as a way of saying how sorry he was that he had dropped the ball. I was very impressed with his professsionalism and decided to give him a try in my son's room. I didn't want to hang the shelves myself as plaster wall intimidate me. Paul showed up on time and could not have been nicer. He even let me watch and gave me some pointers. I was feeling very good and then I got the bill. Even with the 10% discount it was expensive, I thought, for an hour and a half's work. $90/hour is more than twice the price I paid for the other handyman I had used. I know Paul did a great job and the quality of his work was good but unfortunately I can't afford his rates.

Response from PAUL ON CALL
I have to accept full responsibility for not adequately communicating regarding pricing and for letting an estimated 2-3 week lead time stretch out to 4 weeks. On my first visit to this member, we went over pricing, for a large number of tasks, but the actual work differed from the original and I did not price it out separately in advance. Nevertheless, I feel the price charged was fair for the work performed which required precise installation of 3 shelves as a unit with exacting spacing and alignment, under the close supervision of the member.

We felt this was too much money just to do the rocking chair.
Description of Work: My mother and I put a rocking chair together ourselves. We needed him to help with the last part, putting the arm on the frame. We can’t bend it to get this last piece together. We called to have him come over. He said he would charge between $92 and $95 to do this. We also wanted him to look at an atmospheric water generator and he said that he didn't know anything about these.

Response from PAUL ON CALL
I was completely SHOCKED to see this report. It is completely unfounded and without an ounce of merit. Unprofessional? By my standards it's unprofessional to undertake work for which you are neither qualified nor licensed. This member wanted me to install an "atmospheric water generator" which he had bought on-line. After researching it on the company's website, I concluded that the installation was too complicated for me, and probably should be performed by a licensed plumber, especially since it might require connection to the public water supply. I explained this to the member and I suggested, since the rocking chair was the only item left on his list, that he might find more projects for me to do, so as to spread my minimum charge over several items. The member and I BOTH agreed that the rocking chair was not worth what I would have to charge. I returned the member's initial call the same day. I invested my own time to research a product that was unfamiliar to me and reported my findings within 2 days. I was polite throughout, and took the time to explain why I felt I could not do the work he wanted, and what tradespersons he should contact for the work. I take my reputation seriously, and my 5-year long record on Angie's List speaks for itself. If there were a "Penalty Box" for members, I would certainly nominate this member for this unfounded and inflammatory report. The member refuses to return my calls seeking an explanation of his grades or what exactly he felt was "unprofessional," but I'd be happy to discuss this report in person with any member who wishes, either by email or phone. For anyone interested in seeing what led me to decline the project, here is the address for the installation instructions for the "Atmospheric Water Generator" Ecoloblue Model 28: See especially pages 11-14! And, by the way, in my experience, when the last piece of assemble-it-yourself furniture doesn't fit, it's likely that one or more steps were botched, and that you've got to backtrack until you find the error. I generally DON'T recommend "bend(ing) it to get this last piece together."

Paul looked at the bathroom floor grout that I wanted renewed, explained what he would do, and gave me an estimate. -About two weeks later, as promised, he called and set a time to do the job. -He removed the chalky, flaky, stained grout to the necessary depth from the entire tiled floor, and used acetone to clean the opening. (I think he used silicone to seal the edges of the tiles. Not sure.) -Last, he regrouted the tiles and caulked the edges where the floor tiles met the wall tiles. -And of course he cleaned up.
Description of Work: Parking is difficult in my neighborhood, but Paul found a place and came as planned at about 10 AM. He worked steadily removing grout and then took a short break around noon, as I recall. When he needed to use acetone, he made sure at that the heat was down and the fan on; I cracked open two windows. When he had finished grouting the tiles and caulking the edges where floor tiles meet glossy wall tiles, it looked just as I had hoped it would. He gave me some cleaning/care tips in addition. My only surprise was that Paul preferred that I not walk on the grout for two weeks, and that I seal the grout with silicon myself with his instructions to guide me. I'm sure I can do that. He said to call or email him him if I have questions. I have a guest bathroom, so the surprise didn't matter a great deal. I would certainly call Paul first if a I have another job later on.
