Once I found out my front yard tree was dying and couldn't be saved, it didn't matter how it was cut. The tree looks like h*** with the cutting they did, just basically shaving it straight up for twenty feet, but if they were told and quot;cut whateverand quot; by my neighbor (I don't know if she spoke with them that morning) then I can't hold that against them. But the rude and unprofessional phone manner, and trying to cheat me ten years ago about cutting down my backyard tree when it was healthy is so unethical, I'd never hire or recommend this hack to anyone.
Description of Work: My neighbor wanted to cut down a tall pine in the yard abutting both her yard and my yard, with the land owner's blessing. She also wanted to trim the trees surrounding her yard -- one of which is a large maple on my property, but right on the property line so half the branches are over her driveway. She called Mike's Tree Service from Coventry, RI. After she negotiated with him, she told Mike that she wanted him to talk with me to go over the cuts he'd make on my tree, letting him know that our relationship as neighbors was important to her. Mike resisted, saying she didn't need my permission for anything. (True, the law in RI says that anything two feet over a property line can be cut by the owner of the land the tree branches hang over. BUT, if the cutting results in killing the tree, then the land owner is responsible for removing the old tree, buying a replacement tree, and planting the new one). I was asleep when he came to my door, so he told my neighbor to have me call with any questions. When she explained the cuts to me, I was worried because the tree has been in my yard since I was born, but now had some dead wood because of disease. The limbs over my neighbor's driveway were all the healthy limbs -- if they were cut to much, would it kill the tree? When I left a message for Mike he called me right back. I explained who I was. He interrupted me, and waved away my concerns, saying, "Don't worry, my guys'll do a good job. It'll look fine." Then he started talking to someone else in the office. I asked, "Do you have time to talk to me?" He says, "I can't talk to you now, can I call you in ten minutes?" -- then never called back. I had a tree company who had done excellent work for me a year earlier come over to examine my tree, to see what cutting would solve my neighbor's concerns yet not hurt the tree or make it look terrible. He told me the tree was dying of disease, and let Mike's men cut as much as they wanted, so it would cost me less to have it totally taken down later this year. So 'consulting' with Mike again was not necessary. He couldn't have cared less about his client's (my neighbor) concern about our relationship, much less about how I felt. This guy must create a lot of hard feelings between neighbors because he is ignorant, rude, and unprofessional over the phone. And, when I heard his voice, I realized I had met this guy before. Ten years ago, in the summer of 2000, Mike had come to my house because I noticed some rot in the crotch of a huge maple tree in my backyard -- a tree I loved; a defining element to our yard. He shows up, barely glances at the tree, and prnounces sadly, "You can't save this tree." He pointed to the house and asked whose bedroom was in the dormer facing the tree. I told him my elderly mother. "Well," he said gravely, "You don't want this tree to fall on the house -- it'd kill anyone sleeping in there." Then he surveyed my yard, noted how easy it would be to get his truck in and offered to cut down this gorgeous tree for "A thousand bucks." When I got two other opinions, both companies (one who has an A rating on Angie's list) told me the tree was fine, the rot in the crotch was minor and to be expected. They both explicitly said the chances of the tree crushing my mother's bedroom was remote (say a hurricane force wind). Both companies offered a vitamin that is applied with a probe into the ground around the base of the tree, which I've had done each year. The tree is still there, beautiful, and recently was trimmed by my back neighbors by a great company who listened to my concerns and cut exactly what they said they would. (They were one of the companies I went to for a second opinion in 2000). In fairness, my neighbor was satisfied with the job Mike's Tree Service did, arriving at 7:00 am and finishing everything by 8:30am, without leaving a mess -- but I am not satisfied with how this guy operated, trying to cut down a perfectly healthy tree with me, and then being so rude about explaining what his crew would do the next morning.
