Brendan Ryan and his crew provided excellent customer service and workmanship. The two biggest jobs were changing our 1970's wood paneled basement to an updated, useable room, and transforming our large master bedroom/dressing room from dark woodwork to fresh, white painted woodwork. The basement was completely painted a warm cream color and all the woodwork painted white. A cat door was added for our cats. The stairs were painted white and a texture added for safety. The transformation is amazing! The master bedroom was painted a neutral cream and all the woodwork (and there is extensive woodwork) painted white. This included 14 closet doors, two pocket bathroom doors and painting the master bathroom. Once again, the transformation from a dark, dull room to a bright, modern master bedroom is amazing. We had new french doors installed in the master bedroom, and some work done to our shower to fix the grout. Brendan was on hand throughout the work, he wasn't on site every day but was thorough in making sure every "T" was crossed and "I" dotted. His crew were professional, ALWAYS ON TIME, and cleaned up at the end of every day. Our home is 6000 sq ft, built in 1900, so there's lots of stairs, etc. We had the foyer painted from the first floor all the way up to the third floor. All of the window casings and sills were painted. The walls in several of the other bedrooms were patched and painted where they had cracked. Brendan's guys were able to match the paint exactly so you can't even tell where the work was done - amazing! The chimney in the loft was replastered and repainted. They also fixed little things around the house, doors not closing, etc. and they hung a very large piece of art for me above the bed, and a very large mirror on the wall. They had to wait a couple of months to refinish our porch because of weather conditions, which we really appreciated Brendan explaining, as I know there are some companies that just do the work without letting you know the consequences of weather conditions. We are selling our home and Ryan Painting helped us get everything ready before meeting with our realtor. Brendan gave us peace of mind in letting us know his work is 100% guaranteed. We would absolutely hire Ryan Painting again.
Description of Work: Painting many rooms in our home, refinishing very large wrap-around porch, replacing wooden bases for posts holding up porch, installing new french doors, plastering, fixing french doors to outside patio area, fixed cracks in several rooms.

Our house is about 80 years old and had lots of cracks in the walls and a hole in a ceiling where plumbing repair was done. The last time the walls were painted was about 10 years ago. We contacted Ryan Painting via Angie's List and had an immediate response. We felt the estimate was fair and contracted to have the walls and cracks repaired, hole in ceiling repaired by removign existing ceiling and replacing with smooth drywall, wall paper removed, and about 6 rooms painted. The team arrived on time, and the first day took the time to work with us to explain what would happen and how and when. Every day, the team arrived and departed as they told us and the work progressed without a hitch. At the end of each day the painters would clean up thoroughly and organize for the next day. Always polite, professional, and friendly. Now the work is complete, and I feel as if I live in a new house. We are delighted with the finished job and felt that the Ryan Painting team was outstanding. The whole experience was much better and much easier than we could have anticipated. I wouldn't hesitate at all to recommend Ryan Painting - outstanding all around for service, quality, and professionalism.

It didn't go at all. I'm disappointed because Ryan Painting was the first company I found on Angie's List when I bought my house 4.5 years ago; they painted most of the interior rooms and did a great job; I recommended them to a friend a year or so later and they also had a good experience. This time I had a difficult time getting someone to return a call or actually show up. I left a message at the main number on July 31 or August 1; that call was never returned. So I called again on August 19, did speak to someone, agreed--I thought--that someone would come out between 8 and 9 the following day. No one showed. I called at 9, no apology; whoever answered the phone--a project manager, not Brendan--said they were in Chestnut Hill (I'm in Ambler) and could come out then but at that point I needed to get to work. So someone was supposed to come today, again between 8 and 9. No one had come by 8:30 when I opened the door to get the paper, but at 9, there was a card on the door. Apparently I didn't hear him (Alex) knocking but it doesn't seem like he tried very hard; I have a sign about leaving packages at the OTHER door (which has a doorbell) and what about a phone call? I was boggled and again, really disappointed, especially when I see the recent and great reviews for Ryan Painting by other members. [Happy] Update, 11/11/2013: Within a day of my review here, Brendan reached out to me by phone, apologized, and offered me 2 equally good options to get my job done. Although I already had an estimate from another painter, it was very high and I wasn't entirely comfortable with that guy, so I decided to try again with Ryan Painting. I had to wait a bit, but it was well worth it--2 painters, Greg and Emily, came out with Brendan on 10/7, did all the prep that day, and did the actual painting on 11/8. I'm really happy with the whole job; they did a nice job patching the ceiling where new recessed lights had been installed, painted all the trim, smoothed out rough spots on the walls, and cleaned up perfectly when they were done (both days). Above and beyond that, they took down a cabinet, reinstalled a laundry hook, and repatched and painted a spot in my dining room where a neighbor's contractor had put a foot nearly through the ceiling drywall--all things I asked to be done, but not really in the original scope of work. This Ryan crew was just as meticulous as the crew that painted my house 5 years ago. So, I'm not disappointed anymore and I am very happy that yes, Ryan Painting really does deserve its many A reviews!

Response from Ryan Painting LLC
Hi Ellen, This is Brendan Ryan and I apologize and assume full responsibility for this unfortunate service breakdown. This is the first I hear of the incident so had no way to address it for you. We had a tremendous summer season due to incredible Angie's List member business and also had a two week family reunion planned in Ireland in August so hired a project manager to help cover things. I trained and walked through all aspects of the business for three months with him and handed the phone over right about the time you called and then I was away when the rest of the events occurred. Upon return in early September it became evident that said manager was dropping the ball with the basics and I had fired him previously to this complaint posting. I assure you and everyone, I am back and fully in charge and that our services and commitment to all our customers is stronger than ever. My personal commitment is to make everything right no matter what. Apologies are nice but insufficient and I would make sure given the opportunity I would personally do the work you wanted done at no cost or if you had it done by someone else will pay the full bill. Please email or call me anytime and let me know what I can do to show you we absolutely care about you as a client and do not want to lose you or have any bad feelings when you think of us. With sincerest apologies and regrets to you and any other member who might have had a similar encounter I assure you the situation has been addressed. Thank you, please forgive and hope to hear from you soon, Brendan

It was great and will definitely use them again when we have interior work to be done. The end result was even better than we could have expected. From start to finish, everything went well. Brendan came on time for the estimate and sent the estimate quickly--it was similar to others but I got the best vibe from Brendan, especially that he seemed to enjoy old houses. We first contacted him in the fall too late for last year, but we came and put primer on some of the worst spots. In the spring, we were the first job on deck. He provided assistance in choosing colors and trim and the result is quite beautiful. His crew was a pleasure to have here and almost seemed like they were becoming part of the family. Lots of little touches made it especially good-- advice on how to do the trim, finding a roofer when they noticed while prepping the house that there were some areas of concern, and helping to match the stained glass of the front door and replacing the panels. He communicated well with us and was very responsive.

Could not possibly have been better. They visited, gave a quote, I requested additional work, they gave another quote, set a date, came to inspect the date of the job, did the job, billed me, end of story. And, the icing on the cake is - I was at my shore home while all this was going on and did not so much as receive one call or question from them! They did everything, bought everything and left the place immaculate. In fact, I called them when I got home and said "Did you clean the entire house while you were at it?".

Brendon is a very professional, hard working, flexible guy with a very talented and quick working team. I will certainly do business with them again in the future and thank them so much for the work they did.
Description of Work: When the walls of my newly purchased (built in 1924) home started to crumble as my husband and I peeled ancient wall paper from the walls I started to panic. Luckily for me, Ryan Painting stepped in and not only restored my walls by doing fantastic plaster work, but did a fantastic job painting the walls and woodwork. I had the team remove more ancient wall paper from the dining room and paint my living room, dining room, back play room, and small hallway.

I can't say enough about how pleased I am with Brendan and his Crew. Brendan has been very responsive, he listens well and is very good at tailoring the job to what we asked for. We originally hired Ryan Painting to just clean up and paint the exterior of the house but now we've had the team back 2 more times in the last month for interior work. I am never painting again!

It went very well. Once I called them, Brendan set up a time to come and look at the work that was required. He e-mailed me an estimate that night. They were able to start the next week. The workers always showed up on time, were professional, polite and respectful of our furnishings. They were very patient with me in selecting the paint colors for the living room as we were trying to match an existing color but no longer had the paint can to use to get a match. Brendan stressed the fact that I had to be happy with the color of the paint as well as the workmanship - so I felt no pressure to hurry up and just pick a color. I finally picked a color that my husband and I are very happy with. We will be using them again in the spring to paint the outside of our house.
Description of Work: We had water damage in several rooms and settlement cracks. Some of this was on plaster walls and some was drywall which also had some mold. They repaired everything to our satisfaction. They painted 3 rooms, master closet, and hallway.

While not the lowest estimate we received, Brendan's estimate was fair for the work involved. After meeting Brendan, a former teacher, we were immediately impressed with his ethic and knowledge. Toby and Esteban worked through the hottest summer in memory, putting in long grueling days. They did all they were supposed to and more. We added some extras during the job, fully expecting to pay for them, but Brendan never charged us. I wish you could see difference in the stucco and woodwork, neither of which had been patched or painted in a very long time. We are very happy with our choice and would not hesitate using them again, inside or out.
Description of Work: We had extensive stucco patching to do, woodwork that needed to be prepped, and scraping and power washing all over, including a steel cellar door. Finally, the whole house was painted.

Brendan Ryan came out promptly to give us an estimate, and then waited patiently as we solicited estimates from two other contractors. In the end, we chose Ryan Painting because of the knowledge and professionalism he evidenced, as well as the outstanding reviews on Angie's List. We had decided to refinish the hardwood floors in the living and dining rooms first, and Brendan was willing to delay the painting until it was convenient for us, which was a month and a half from the time when he originally gave us the estimate. When we finally scheduled the painting, Brendan came to our house a second time, at our request, to assist us with the choice of colors and the type of paint. He then returned a third time, this time with samples of the three paints we were considering for each room, and proceeded to paint large swaths on each wall to show us how it would look.. (His advice and assistance in this regard was very valuable, and led to our complete satisfaction with color scheme when the project was finished.) The painters themselves (two of them) began the work on schedule, arrived each day at the time they previously indicated, cleaned up each day, and finished the job in four days. It should be noted that they were extremely neat in terms of applying the paint, something that was of great importance given that the floors had been recently refinished. The foreman, Toby, was knowledgeable and answered the many questions that we posed to him during the week to our complete satisfaction. He even returned the day after the painting was finished to be sure we were satisfied and to do some minor detail work, e.g., removing paint specks on the door handles. All in all, Ryan Painting did an extraordinary job, and we would highly recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Ryan Painting installed crown molding in the living and dining rooms and removed chair railing in the dining room. They then applied two coats of paint to the ceilings, walls, and trim in the living and dining rooms, the entrance foyer, and the upstairs hallway (including bedroom doors). The price cited above included the cost of paint and materials (crown molding).

I met Brendan Ryan, the owner, when he was painting the windows of our next door neighbor. I kept his card and when we needed painting, called him. He was out promptly to give us an estimate. His prices were extremely fair (two painters, working full 8-hour days with no breaks), and the work was terrific. The painters were courteous, professional, hard-working, and importantly, they did a great job matching paints and making repairs and touchups. The cleaned up after themselves, including washing the floors, and left the place as they found it ... no, actually, they left it better than they found it. We'd have them back in a heartbeat.

Ryan Painting was phenomenal--we would give them an A+ if that were possible. We are tough judges as it relates to this, as we have had considerable work done in our house during the past 5+ years that has covered virtually every aspect (roofing, electric, floors, kitchen remodel, A/C, and even other painting work). We thus are much more sophisticated judges of contractors and the quality of their work and fairness of prices. Brendan and his team did a great job. Brendan did a comprehensive assessment before we started and prepared a detailed proposal. The price was fair but was not the lowest of all the bids that we received. We have learned, over time, though, that going with the lowest bid is often not the best course of action--it frequently is the case, as we have learned, that you get what you pay for. In this case, what we paid for was excellent work that ultimately came in at a very fair price. The guys on site were prompt, nice to deal with, clean, and very hard workers. The repair work was first-rate and the prep work for the painting was superb. The painting work, itself, was great and we are very, very pleased with the final result. The guys also were terrific in making sure everything was done well. When we did a final walk through, and noted a few minor things, they cheerfully took care of those things, as they wanted us to be 100% happy--which we are. We highly recommend Ryan Painting. Our only regret is that we didn't know about them before--they would have had all the other painting work that we have done with others in prior years.

Brendan Ryan and his crew (led by Tobi) were excellent from start to finish. First, Brendan's communication is excellent. It was easy to deal with him by email to get an estimate for the job (which, because it was exterior painting, he was able to do without needing me to be there) and to schedule the job. Brendan also checked in with me most nights during the job to make sure I was satisfied with the work and the progress. On the first day of the job, I met Brendan and Tobi at 8am to discuss the scope of the work and the colors we picked for each surface. On the last two days of the job, I let Tobi in at 8am to paint the front door and he locked up when he was done for the day. I was glad that Brendan and Tobi were willing to work around my schedule - if I needed to go into work early, they were willing to come early if they needed anything. The estimate Brendan provided was right on, and the work was completed within 4 days (they originally estimated 4-5 days, so this was right on). The quality of the work is excellent. We were amazed by how much better our house could look with some fresh paint (granted the colors are much better than what was there before). The most impressive part of the job was that Brendan and Tobi did various "extras" for us that neither we nor they contemplated when we initially discussed the job. Tobi repainted our number sign, replaced a rotted piece of wood that ran along the top of our third floor windows, and even replaced a pane of glass in the crescent window about our door, which had a small and mostly unnoticeable crack in it. Because the glass was curved, they had to make a special trip out to a glass shop in Chestnut Hill to get the piece cut. These "extras" were far and away beyond the call of duty and we would have been thrilled with the job even if they didn't do these things. Moreover, Brendan wouldn't even accept payment for these "extras," although we think he should have. All in all, this was a first rate job and I will certainly recommend Brendan, Tobi, and Ryan Painting to my friends and family.

Returned my initial voice mail quickly, arrived on time to give us an estimate. His team arrived on time and started scraping off the old plaster. They did a great job covering up the floor and furniture. The first day they scraped, primed and plastered. When they left they cleaned everything up, you would never have known they had been working in the room all morning. Day 2 they arrived on time, smoothed out the ceiling and painted. Again they did an excellent job with the cleanup. The next day we noticed a small area that needed a little more attention. We contacted Brendan and his team arrived the next day and fixed the area. Great responsivnes and professionalism. We would use him again if we needed additional plastering or painting.

Brendan Ryan had recently done a small job for me and so I hired him to paint my mom's bathroom which had paint that was peeling from the steam caused by the shower. She also needed her hallway painted and metal railing on the stairway. Brendan took care of everything and didn't interrupt my mom's household - very significant because she's in her mid eighties and didn't want to have her routine or home disrupted by painting. Brendan and his partner were professional, quiet, clean and cleaned up very nicely. My mom was very pleased with the work and the easy process. I will definitely hire Brendan again.
