I called several handymen companies. It took several days to get back to me and some never even bothered to call back. This company on the other hand, called back right away and provided excellent customer services over the phone and in person. I had a small drywall project. For this work, they sent Rob. He was excellent. He was on time, very pleasant and the did a beautiful job and clean up, as well. I would definitely recommend this company again. Although I thought the price for this job was a little high, this company also came in at the lowest price.

This is the second time we have used handyman connection. We were very pleased from start to finish with the work completed. They were tasks such as fixing molding and trim to installing a new garbage disposal. Communication with this company is excellent and easy. They confirm things and check in and follow up. I will definitely use them in the future.

We installed laminate floors in our house last month and had a lot of issues with the transitions, and around the slate fireplace hearth. I contacted handyman connections, first sent photos of the potential job and then Frank came out to check out the areas himself to better quote us. We ended up ordering some of the materials for the job since we ordered the original flooring. Once they came in, I was able to quickly schedule Frank to come in to do work. There was an issue with a previous job for Frank, so he was running late. But Sarah from the office called and emailed me to let me know, which I greatly appreciated. Everything looked great, and we were so glad to have the project finished! Project site looked like he wasn't even there! Also, Sarah from the office was always so responsive to my back and forth emails. Would definitely use them again for another project!

But Kate and Joe's work went far beyond just the obvious. They did their work intelligently. They took care of the house as I would have. Kate dealt with the alarm company more than once, and one time, at my request, even replaced light bulbs before my arrival. At every house check they flushed toilets, ran sinks, ran the dishwasher and even ran the car engine. Everything checked was recorded and I received that in an email along with a bill. They were reliable, trustworthy, and did great repair work. I highly recommend The Handyman Connection for anything that has to do with your house.
Description of Work: I have used the Handyman Connection of Delaware Valley, Kate and Joe Meadows, for the past three years to help take care of my house in a western suburb of Philadelphia. I moved out of the country and my children were grown and gone, so the house was empty. I had my mail forwarded to the Handyman Connection office and Kate helped me take care of any important correspondence. Joe and a few of his employees checked my house at regular intervals and reported anything that required attention. As I was out of the country, we communicated mostly via email. They were quickly on top of any problems that occurred, communicated with me, and then did the needed work. Some examples of the work are: repaired a small difficult patch of roof and then repaired and painted the wall at that spot; replaced lost roof shingles, found a slow toilet leak and fixed it; repaired a faucet drip, then repaired the ceilings below. I contracted with the Handyman Connection to paint a whole floor while I was away. Kate even had some design and color suggestions which I readily accepted. All of their work was exemplary. I couldn't have been more pleased.

The owner and his staff take pride in their work and we recommend them for all the jobs around the house that require attention. They worked within our budget and we were completely satisfied with the improvements to our home. We have an old house that needs work and sincerely appreciate Angie's list for connecting us to Handyman Connection. Joe, the owner, expressed his pride of his Top ratings that showed through his company's work ethic.
Description of Work: A plumbing issue in our kitchen, and the need to address cold air and heat loss through our windows and front door lead me to Angie's list. I called Handyman Connection based on the 'A' evaluations and positive feedback from other folks that had a great experience. The owner, Joe came out himself and evaluated the tasks and sent us a quote the same day that was very reasonable and honest. We were extremely satisfied with their work and have decided to get quotes for other tasks needed in our home. We need installation of ceiling fans with all the wiring, outdoor motions sensors, a doorbell fixed, attic stairs replaced, flooring, a new kitchen countertop and backslash among others.

I had a finished basement, they took it all out. Put in drywall, painted and a drop ceiling. Everything was going great the first 2 days then the quality dropped off the last 2 days. I called the owners and they where very nice. They came out and looked at the work and agreed there where some problems. They went out of their way to make everything right ans we love our new basement now.Everyone makes mistakes but it takes a great company to admit it and fix everything with a good attitude,I would use them again and highly recommend them. Bye the way the price was very good! Thanks Handyman Connection!!! Paul

Not all projects go as smoothly as anticipated - and this one was going along fine at first. We appreciated the opportunity to work with the homeowner to make the final work be to his satisfaction. Description of Work: 2/25/11 - met with Kate Meadows the owner several hours after I called to go over the items that needed to be repaired or replaced. The 1st item that needed attention was relocation of a mailbox that an auto had skidded into. Kate took pictures of the old location & the new location. She also took pictures of a 12 ft high closet door that had come off it's hinges and several windows that were either sticking or in need of new hardware.

I called to have a list of services performed at my home. I gave my address and was asked to be placed on hold. They then asked me to go over the list of things that I needed done. It was an extensive list and was at least 2 days worth of work. I took the time to explain my needs. The lady said that they would have to call me back. They called me back to say that although their advertisement indicates that they serve Chester County, they do not service my area because it is too far away. It was a very frustrating experience and a waste of my time. They should not advertise that they service Chester County because that is misleading and false.

Response from Handyman Connection - West Chester
We did receive a phone call from this homeowner on 10/18. She evidently was responding to an advertisement in an AngiesList directory she received indicated we service Chester County. Our office is located in Malvern, PA and we do service Chester, Montgomery and Delaware counties. There are parts within these counties that are a substantial distance from where our craftsmen are located. These are areas we may or may not be able to service due to current craftsmen availability, location and the increased cost of fuel. When this particular potential customer called in we did place her on hold to determine the distance of her home from the office. Since it was one hour away in "drive-time", we asked to call her back (as we wanted time to determine craftsmen location as well). In anticipation of accommodating her location, we then mapped where our closest craftsmen were located; the closest one was still almost one hour away in "drive-time". We then called the homeowner back to advise her we were not able to provide service to her at this time. Note that we do not feel that we were practicing false and misleading advertising as there was no deception involved, nor any monies to be made - if anything we stood to lose potential revenue from not evaluating and completing this project(s). (Please see the definition of false and misleading advertising below)... To establish that an advertisement is false, five things must be proven: (1) a false statement of fact has been made about the advertiser's own goods, services, or commercial activity; (2) the statement either deceives or has the potential to deceive a substantial portion of its targeted audience; (3) the deception is also likely to affect the purchasing decisions of its audience; (4) the advertising involves goods or services in interstate commerce; and (5) the deception has either resulted in or is likely to result in injury. The most heavily weighed factor is the advertisement's potential to injure a customer. The injury is usually attributed to money the consumer lost through a purchase that would not have been made had the advertisement not been misleading. False statements can be defined in two ways: those that are false on their face and those that are implicitly false. We re-contacted this homeowner to see if she would like Handyman Connection to accommodate her original request, which we are willing to do. We also requested that this posting be removed, which the homeowner refused to do, stating that she wasted 15-20 minutes of her time by calling our company, explaining her needs and waiting for our return phone call. She stated she still believed our advertising was false and misleading. We do apologize if we caused any inconvenience to this potential customer. We do feel we are an exceptionally professional company and did try to accommodate this homeowner during her initial call and again today. We absolutely have NO intention of deceiving or misleading customers in any manner. We have since edited our AngiesList.com listing to clarify there are some locations in Chester, Montgomery and Delaware counties we may not be able to accommodate.

The original estimate was for moving the shed off the old foundation, rebuilding the foundation and then moving the shed back. The material price was for $560 and labor $1875. We moved the date at their request by one week to Monday the 29th. The contractor did show up Monday at 9 for the wood delivery - which was double the quote!! Since I was sick I couldn't really negotiate and wrote a check. He then left to work on some emergency (it was the day after Hurricane Irene). I was told that the material quote was just that and I had to pay whatever Handyman Connection was being charged. Kate finally agreed to split the difference with us.The contractor came back the next day and said that he would not move the shed off the foundation but would work around it, building a new wall and removing the rotted wood after. Again, I was sick and my husband took care of the negotiations and he agreed to the new scenario. The next morning the office called at 9 to say that he could not come out, but would be finishing on Saturday. We had already changed our travel plans to accomodate their schedule so we said that would not work for us. So they agreed to come out Thursday. He did come out and was close to finishing but did come back Friday to complete the job. He ordered more wood than was needed so we got some money back for that. Though we still have two long pieces on the lawn as of today - 9/6/11. The work seems well done and I know he worked very hard, along with a young helper. However, I don't think it should have been such a hassle: the incorrect (double!!) estimate, the work schedule and the fact that the final work done was not what was on the original specs. Only time will tell if it holds up, though it does look good. The reason the final price was less than quoted was the fact that he did not move the shed after all, plus we had a 10% coupon from Angie's List!
Description of Work: They replaced the wooden foundation for our yard shed (12 x 20 ft).

It is always a valuable experience to learn of a customer's perspective of a transaction that has been challenging for both sides. We appreciate the opportunity to provide a response and address some comments within this report... To address the "Incorrect (double!!) estimate": Please note that Handyman Connection provides written proposals with a "hard" price for labor (we price by the project - not by the hour) and an ESTIMATED price for materials - as the actual cost cannot be determined until the time of purchase. We do NOT mark-up materials and hence do NOT make a profit from materials. Our contracts do state "CUSTOMER WILL SUPPLY AND PAY FOR ALL MATERIALS SEPARATE FROM LABOR". When our company first provided pricing for this project, we used a verbal quote from a local lumber yard for materials, which we provided to the homeowner. The homeowner indicated interest in our proposal but did not initially accept due to a death in the family. We followed up several times and reconnected with the homeowner in late July - about one month later. Although our proposals are only good for 30 days, we did proceed and did order the materials. When the lumber yard delivered the lumber on the first day, our craftsman on site was handed an invoice which was much higher than anticipated (see notes below addressing the project delay). If we refused the shipment, we were told we would have to pay a restocking fee and still have to pay the delivery fee. The homeowner was understandably not happy with the higher price, nor were we. The lumber was there and in order to complete the job, we offered to split the additional cost with the homeowner - which was agreed to. It is not fair to say that an estimate is "incorrect" as it IS an estimate, not a hard cost. The Labor price changes as well, but that was LOWERED, due to a change order. Where we did fault was NOT reconfirming the verbal quote for the cost of lumber with the lumber supplier after such a long delay before starting the project. To address the work schedule: Initially this job was delayed by the homeowner themselves. Interest in moving forward was indicated, however, we were told there was a death in the family. We were unable to reach the homeowner for about 30 days. We did finally connect. Once the job was formally accepted, we tentatively scheduled a date. However, this job was delayed as it was an exterior project and required good weather. Additionally, it was also subjected to rescheduling as well due to the finishing of prior projects started for other homeowners. Unfortunately, there were serious rain challenges this entire spring and summer which caused rescheduling for MANY of our customers. And yes, there was also the hurricane! To address "Final Work not Original Specs": The homeowner experienced what is called a "change order" which is NOT uncommon in home repair work. A change is always discussed and negotiated with the customer and the cost may or may not change accordingly. This homeowner's scope of work did change AFTER a discussion and agreement with the homeowner and the labor cost was adjusted accordingly. The customer was not charged for any labor or materials not affiliated with the project. The change order was caused due to our concern that the shed would not survive if we had to actually move it, so the work was revised to reflect the smaller scope of work involved. The final project cost was LESS than the original quote for labor and estimated materials, even with the unexpectedly higher cost of materials. Lastly, please note that the homeowner did not indicate they were AngiesList members until the final payment was being made. We did accommodate their request for the 10% discount on the labor portion of the project.

Thank you for this great report! And we do apologize about being slightly late for that appointment. Sometimes we get caught up on another job due to an unforeseen event and it throws off the schedule a bit. But we're glad you recognized our responsiveness and attempts to keep things moving, and of course we'll continue to make improvements in that area as well. For example, we just upgraded our scheduling software and are changing our customer service training to help prevent even slight disruptions to the schedule if at all possible (and to improve communication between the office and the field, so that customers are kept up to date when a previous job on a craftsman's schedule is taking longer than anticipated). We appreciate your trust in us, and our ability to continuously improve based on your comments. Thanks!

As homeowners ourselves, we at Handyman Connection understand that other homeowners need to work within a defined budget to complete necessary home improvements. Our initial labor proposal was submitted to this homeowner and after review, additional work was added by the homeowner which included running new electrical circuitry, installing recessed lighting, and installing a new closet door in addition to installing drywall to second floor hallway walls, ceiling and stairway. We believe the labor proposal submitted was reasonable for the work involved. We did not receive any feedback from the homeowner indicating that the proposal pricing was too high. We would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss pricing options and to work within the homeowner's budget. Handyman Connection is fully insured, registered with the state, offers great customer service and guarantees workmanship. Consumers should take these professional attributes into consideration when comparing labor quotes. We wish the homeowner well with the current project and would welcome another opportunity to work with the homeowner on any future home improvement projects.

Very flexible on availability to quote job. Written quote delivered in very timely fashion. Once selected, established a schedule date fairly quickly. Install went smoothly but I did have to supply some insulation batt material and quarter round materials to finish the job. That is one reason that quality was rated slightly lower than other categories. Probably would have been better to define in more detail what materials would be supplied by each party in the quote/agreement. Very personable crew. Would use them again for this type of work.

Upon my purchasing both an exterior and storm door, HC was scheduled to install both on 6/6. At 9:30 am, when a representative did not show up, I called HC. Much to my dissatisfaction, they sent a different rep to do the work than the original person who measured and estimated the job. Not only does my brand new exterior door not fit, it is damaged and the jamb is also damaged. HC left the hinges with at least one or more screws missing, even though I was sent to Home Depot to purchase screws for them. The door at the lock and keeper is scraped and damaged in trying to line up the openings. The jamb is visually not perpendicular. I was informed the storm door would not fit the jamb and he did not install it.(regardless of both doors being the same size, why would one fit and not the other? I had 2 same size doors previously which were removed. HC 1st installer told me what size doors to order upon his visual inspection and estimate) HC returned the same day after I complained about the work at which time the installer readjusted a portion of the opening which did nothing. It was obvious they were not going to reinstall the door again and hoped some adjusting would be satisfactory. I now have an opening at the bottom of my door between the door and the jamb of about 3/8" up about 3" in which you can see the outside sunlight and an opening at the top. I had to nail a tarp on the outside of the opening so rain would not enter and ruin my new carpet since I do not have a storm door. Days later during a phone conversation the owner assured me she was going to refund my $500 due to my dissatisfaction, so I could contract someone else to reinstall the door, which is also an option stated in HC contract. Upon changing her position, I received a letter of refusal of refund and a phone call from my attorney did not produce a favorable integrity on HC's behalf. Not only have I invested $500 but I have a $400 damaged door.
Description of Work: Replace exterior front and storm doors.
