R Smith Paving Contractor

Stay away from this company, especially on the road!!! Trending with their other poor reviews, communication is absolutely awful and they will not respond when something goes wrong. I STRONGLY encourage you to spend your money elsewhere.

I contracted with R. Smith Paving to replace my driveway with blacktop, plus “Belgian block” pavers at the entrance, as is common in the Main Line and my street. He charged $12,250 for the blacktop, which he did well. He charged $6,500 for the block entrance, which was a disaster. Smith used oddly-shaped, mismatched rocks, not like attractive, rectangular blocks common in the region, and the surface is not level with the blacktop, buckled, ugly, like a 300-year old alley. When I complained, he admitted they are not competent to install a block surface typical of region. Smith said that jargon used in the quote says it would be below standard and therefore, he’s not responsible. He then said they would make me happy. He has ignored my daily calls. I would like a $6,500 refund and removal of the blocks so I can hire a competent company.

Called the company for a concrete estimate and the receptionist only said they do asphalt. I dont know why they would put this on their website but I guess they need to get their facts straight.

Quality work, driveway graded/sloped properly. Showed up with 5 or 6 person crew so job was completed quickly, as promised. Very happy with the finished, new driveway surface.

This was a very nice experience. The son of the company owner came out, gave me an estimate, was on-site during the work to inspect, and they sent me a thank you letter after the work was done.

R Smith scheduled the job within a week of receiving the signed quote. They arrived when promised to remove the old driveway and were there the very next day to lay the new one. Very knowledgeable and had plenty of staff to complete the job in a couple of hours. The job turned out very nice and the price was very reasonable based on other quotes received. I would definitely recommend them to anyone, in fact I already have to two other friends looking for driveway work!

I received estimates from 3 separate paving contractors, then compared how each company handled request/quote. My decision was easy...I trusted R. Smith Paving Contractor of West Chester because I received better communication/information. Richie Smith, Owner, personally and promptly inspected driveway, supplied detailed job quote, and kept me informed of scheduled start date. If I had additional questions, Richie personally and promptly returned my call. On 8/27/15, at 7:30 a.m., Archie Barlow, Supervisor, along with his "A" team arrived on time, reviewed prep details, timing, and wasted not a minute starting the project. Also, Richie stopped by at 8:00 a.m; he definitely sows the seeds by adding a higher level of "customer care. Richie and Archie were professional, courteous and personable. This company well deserves Five Star rating because they oversee and direct their crew to value their high standards of pride in quality workmanship. The project was completed by 12 noon and job site left very clean. My driveway is beautiful. I highly recommended R. Smith Paving Contractor.

They are very professional. They did a good job and had it done in two days. Whatever they did, they did well and they came back and checked on it. They will be back this year to check on it and make sure that it's holding up well. They follow thru for a couple of years to make sure it is holding up. They do a lot of the highways and things like that. If they are working on the government roads then I have to wait. Everything was done really well and they even cut back the grass for the driveway for us and they could get nice even lines and the tar and stuff wouldn't get everywhere.

Wow, this team was very impressive. Rich was very honest and polite. If you want low cost they are not your pick. If you want a very fair price and excellent work, go with R Smith Paving. Our driveway project was a bit complex, some removal but not all, regrading, etc. I was very concerned because we had just put in a new paved front walk and siding, and did not want the asphalt to mark it. They said don't worry I don't need to cover the surfaces and they were right. First class equipment. Probably eight people overall for a 2,000 sq ft driveway. Great quality work and attention to detail. If you care about quality and the look of your driveway this is the team to call. Thank you Smith family!

The guy was very informative and told me what he was doing and why. He got it done very quickly. I didn't actually make the contract until Friday, and he was here the next day. He didn't even look at the thing until Friday. He moved very quickly. It was just a small job. These guys used to do development parking lots or big box door parking lots. They are a pretty well-equipped company. He came out with a small crew, did it, and was on his way. It was good. The job looks great; exactly what we wanted. I specifically got the card so that I could give it to the new owners in case they need any paving work.

I called this paving company after doing a lot of research, I have hated our driveway since we bought this house 4 years ago. I am the guy that spends 7 months researching tires for my truck before I replaced them. We had many estimates, and Rich Sr. came out to do the estimate for our property. Rich was beyond knowledgeable about asphalt, taught me a few things I never knew, was very friendly and personable, thanked me for the opportunity to bid on our project, and expressed the desire and hope that we would choose his company. My research told me that this was a 3rd generation family owned paving company, that did not pick apples in the off season, and that all they do is pave, so I was confident in my choice, let alone the fact that their bid was beyond competitive, especially considering the experience they brought to the table. There were a few snags during the job from things the previous homeowner had done, but they were handled professionally, and more importantly without any additional costs to my wife and I, for which I was very grateful. From start to finish the job was amazing, I have told al my friends, and we are planning a stamped asphalt patio in the back of our house, I never even knew this process existed. All in all, this was a fantastic experience, my wife and I could not be happier, and we would recommend this company to anyone and everyone!! Amazing results, a joy to work with, and we could not be more pleased. If you need a driveway or any other asphalt work, this is the company to hire!

Paved existing gravel driveway. They were on time, clean, efficient. Did a great job. Provided a year warranty. Our neighbor used as well. Highly recommend

My wife and I met with the owner/father, and quot;Big Richand quot;, after work one night - very nice man. We told him what we wanted on the phone a few days prior, he showed up with an estimate in hand, right there on the spot. (We were very surprised given the length and steep incline of the driveway that he could provide an estimate so quickly!) He said the quote was good for 24 hours and his work was guaranteed for a year and if we wanted to do it, he would need 30% down right then. We said we wanted to take time to think about it. We slept on it and called the very next morning and asked when they could start. They put the 30% deposit on our debit card and started two weeks later. It took them 3 days to complete. They arrived 9:00 each day and were gone by 4:00. The day after the work was completed, the son arrived at the house, unannounced, asking for a check for the balance - he did not ask if we were happy with the job, if there were any questions, nothing, just wanted a check. I informed him that the deposit payment was made via our debit card - which surprised him - and that we would contact the office to authorize the payment of the balance through our debit card immediately, which we did, since it looked good - initially. Six months later, we began to feel the new section of driveway, on areas of the steep incline portion, and quot;giveand quot; when walked on it, spongy-like, as if there were no support under parts of the asphalt. We didn't know what to think, but thought perhaps it was just and quot;settlingand quot; as the days grew warmer. We took a 'wait and see' attitude. Bad idea. Another month passed and we bagan to notice at the top, and quot;flatand quot; section of the driveway (where we park) 4 areas, a bit larger than a softball, losing stones, and the seam down the center of the driveway was becoming more noticable. At this point, we started getting nervous and called. We left a message with the woman there and advised her about what was happening. She took the message and said someone would call us. We heard nothing back. We called again and left a voicemail. Nothing. Then, before we knew it, we had 11 and quot;spotsand quot; of asphalt up and down the driveway that were breaking down and losing aggragate and now the edges of the driveway were breaking down. We called many times, leaving voicemails, speaking with the same woman, leaving numerous messages. At times she was impatient, sometimes outright rude, then at one point, she apologized for the lack of response and advised that the owner, Big Rich, had been in the hospital, but that his son would stop by to take a look at what was happening and get back to us. Nothing. We continued to call at least once per month. Eventually, eureka! we were told that Big Rich himself would stop by to look at the driveway. Hope burns eternal. Right, you guessed it - nothing. Our calls began to automatically go into voicemail. Before you knew it, a year had passed, no one ever called us back, no one ever stopped by. Nothing. We considered pursuing them legally, for some sort of recourse, but their pockets are deeper than ours and we suppose they know that, which is why they can do this kind of thing and get away with it. After all of this happened, we researched them on a complaint website and there was another poor sap crying the same blues that we were. We anticipate that within a year or two, especially with one more winter like 2013-2014, we will have numerous large pot holes, but now a double-wide driveway with more cost to repair. With retirement closing in on us, our plan was to get these expensive home maintenance items completed by experienced, quality contractors, but, as we all know, things don't always go as planned. Going forward, we will use Angie's List before even making that first call! In closing, I couldn't possibly recommend this company to anyone.

They did a very good job for me. Everything was pretty good. The foreman was nice. The guys were nice and they did a very good job. They cleaned up. I have no complaints and I would use them again if I had to. So far I haven't had any problems with the driveway.

Their pricing was in the middle of the prices that we got. My experience with them was fine. The people were all fine. They weren't as professional as I felt they should have been at that time.

These guys were the best! They were on time, responsive, there was one day the weather didn't permit work, they called to let me know, they always returned phone calls. the work was thorough, as promised and were very reasonable with price. I would highly recommend them to anyone and will use them in the future

Father and sons were very outgoing, and forthcoming with details of the job to be done. There was no wait in scheduling and everyone was punctual on the day of repair. In fact, because of threatening rains on the day of repaving, the crew came the afternoon before to do the prep work and dig up the damaged areas of the driveway. I was asked not to write a check until the job was finished, so I would have the opportunity of being entirely satisfied before payment.

Met with contractor who was in the area. He was very professional and knowlegeable. He measured the driveway for a future project and I was provided with an estimate for that project. We had to be away for awhile and agreed on a time that they would return to complete the job. They returned right on time and did an excellent job. All members of the crew were pleasant and professional and appeared to take pride in their work. I would recommend them highly!!!

Pitch was incorrect in the parking area, which I pointed out to the contactor the same day it was completed. I reiterated to them that there were puddles where the cars parked and it was unacceptable. The contactor was to come back in the spring to resolve. After many phone calls, he finally came back to fix it, but when completed the driveway area looked worse and the issue was not resolved. Again, after many unanswered phone calls, they came back again with still no resolution to the problem. And now, will not return any calls or emails. My advice is to not engage this contractor, but if so, do not pay them in full until completely satisfied with the final results.

No problems of any kind and a great result An estimate was provided on Friday, 1.6.2012, and both the section of pavement removal and the area of addtional pavement were marked at the time of the estimate in orange spray paint. I was given a written estimate. I was given time, before accepting, to check credentials on the Internet and AngiesList. While the price seemed high compared to others on Angies List, Eddie, my contact, gave reasonable explanations for the price. He gave me his cell phone to call with subsequent questions or concerns if any. The crew showed up on Monday, mid-morning, and performed the paving, as promised, .The project took 5 hours and was complete by 3 PM. I paid no money up front, and I paid with a personal check upon completion of the project. I was given a one year guarantee, but a verbal offer to return after that for any problems. I was advised to call for a asphalt-based sealing in 18 months. The site was left very clean. The company had a team of at least 7 men, and two brothers, Eddie and Rich, the great-grandchildren of the company founder, were working supervisors. The team had on-site a small front end loader, the asphalt spreader and a roller, and seemed fully equipped for efficient work The team worked consistently from 1030AM to 2:30 PM.

Family owned business. Owner provided prompt, competitive estimate, and answered all questions I had about the scope of work. Scheduled job within 1-2 weeks and called the day before to confirm. Showed up on time with a professional crew including owner's son, and completed job in one day. Driveway looks great. Mailed them a check after the job was done.

Contractor came to give estimate. I have called 4 times to discuss it and he has not returned my call. I'm thinking the job is too small or he just doesn't need the business.

The project was unsatisfactory as it is not finished yet and I can't get them to return calls to make appointment to finish.

We contacted this company to provide us with an estimate for repairing a sink hole in the parking lot. One of the brothers came out and said another brother needs to take a look. 2 weeks later the older brother comes to our home at 7:00am to provide me with an estimate-no advance warning of his vist. We made some changes and he told me he would drop off the estimate by the end of the week. 2 weeks later, along with 4 unreturned phone calls, we never recevied any estimate. I assume this contracter got behind in his work or just lost interest in our project. Either way, it would have been professional of them to notify me and follow up. At this point, I would not hire them as they seem very unreliable-and we did not even give them our money!
