Description of Work: Sweep showed up on time and did an extremely thorough job. I was not at home but my wife was. He explained exactly what he was doing and why it needed to be done. He warned us of a potentially dangerous issue with one of our chimneys but also told us that it didn't need to be fixed right away. He offered to fix the issue but also suggested that we get other offers from other contractors to make sure that we were getting the best deal. Extremely impressed. We plan on having him reline both of our chimneys.

GREAT.
Description of Work: We had them do a 2nd tier inspection of our chimney. Last year, a company that we hired to sweep it told us we needed $6000 worth of work. We called this company for a 2nd opinion. We showed him the other company's report and he said their evaluation seemed excessive and unnecessary. He suggested a Chimney Saver treatment by a local mason (much cheaper ). I think John seemed very honest b/c he could have easily supported the first eval and swindled us out of a lot of money. He struck me as honest and genuine. Thanks, John.
Description of Work: John arrived as scheduled, did a very thorough cleaning. As he worked, he was happy to explain exactly what he was doing and most importantly why he was doing it! Took the time to show me the correct way of doing things, which products to use and how to inexpensively fix our smoke issue! John replaced the two caps that were needed, a full inspection, would highly recomend him to anyone with a fireplace, wood stove, etc... his very good!!!

I would highly recommend Let There Be LIght, the other chimney sweeps that came out, the first one wanted to replace the entire fireplace and chimney for 15k. The other estimates said I only needed some patch work and a new crown, they were all much more expensive for the same thing.
Description of Work: New custom chimney caps were installed on three flues and applied protective adhesive to the one top to prevent any additional weather damage.

Contacted John after the inspection on my newly purchased home to further examine some questionable chimney issues. After a thorough inspection, John discovered (as we suspected) that many years ago, the prior owners, with the intention of cementing over the fireplace chimney, accidentally cemented over the boiler flue, a potentially life-threatening situation (no escape for carbon monoxide). The resulting condensation caused significant damage to the flue and was a potential hazard. John wrote up a detailed report (including many photos) which we brought to the seller for compensation. After settlement, John came out the next day (he changed his schedule to accommodate my time off work) and did the flue relining and some boiler pipe replacement. He was thorough, hardworking and extremely professional. He is quite knowledgeable about chimneys and all things related to them. I learned more than I probably ever wanted to know, but the extra chatter was well worth it for the fabulous job he did. He takes pride in his work and it shows.
Description of Work: Had my boiler flue uncapped and relined, as a result of some significant chimney damage from previous owners (see below).

It was a pleasant and easy experience from the time I made the appointment until the job was complete. When I made the appointment, I was advised of the cost of the sweep and the cap; there were no surprises or hidden costs. John was a consummate professional. He arrived on time, maintained an extremely neat and clean work area, and answered all of my questions. I intend to use this service provider again.

In late September I recceived a phone call from a company - Sweepy's Inc. - offering to inspect and clean my oil furnace chimney, for $69.00. Ordinarily I don't respond to these types of "cold calls", but I realized that I hadn't had the chimney cleaned in some time so I set up an appointment. Two guys from Sweepy's showed up about 4 hours late, took a look at the chimney and told me that I needed a new liner. They said it would ordinarily cost $3,700, but if they did it right now they could knock the price down to $2,900. I said "no thanks, I'd like to get another opinion and price". I also needed my wooburning stove swept and wanted my other fireplace looked at. I found Let There Be Light on Angies List as well as a couple other highly-rated chimney specialists and made a few calls. John Wisnewski was available sooner than the others (a busy time of year for sweeps); came over within the week to sweep the stove and check out the other chimneys. He corroborated the damage to the oil furnace flue, taking photos and measurements and gave me a price of $2,350.00 to replace the damaged tile liner with a stainless steel liner. He was very knowledgable about each piece of equipment and completely thorough and professional with each task. I agreed to the terms and he returned a few weeks later to replace the liner. He completed the job with great attention to detail and cleanliness in about 4 hours, thoroughly tested the work and seemed as delighted with the result as I was. He clearly takes pride in his work and he has every right to do so. I would recommend him highly for any work related to chimneys and fireplaces.

We researched a lot of companies, but he was the first I could reach. We ended up getting a personal reference from somebody in the neighborhood that had used him. There was no problems at all. He was very prompt, way more professional than I need--this guy knows more about smoke than you'll ever need to. This guy is a real professional at what he does. He knows the science behind why he did things. It was expensive, but it was in line with everybody else.

As you can see, it was a bad experience. I felt cheated and taken advantage of.
Description of Work: I called the company to have an estimate for a chimney job. I already had another estimate and I wanted to compare. John Wisnewski came, talked about my barking dog for at leat 40 minutes, then finally briefly looked at the chimney and presented me with a bill for $167, saying he did a 'level 2' inspection. I said that I wanted an estimate, not an 'inspection', and that he should have told me that upfront, either when I called him or when he came, which he did not. I refused to pay and I want to warn people to beware of this scam.

Response from Let There Be Light Chimney Sweep
Water leaking problems can be a real heart breaker, because there are often multiple causes and a thorough investigation is always necessary to be relatively sure that a proposed cure will work. Often, the cost of an industry standard, diagnostic, Level II inspection is offset by a reduced estimate for the corrective measures, but every situation varies. To read her post, it would seem that I was intentionally coming out to do her harm, instead of trying to be of help. She agreed on the phone to a fully explained Level II inspection, as a prerequisite to an estimate. The amount of time and painstaking effort that it takes to perform a Level II inspection makes it a loss leader. In other words, I could have been somewhere else doing a routine chimney sweeping, which often takes less time. Life is too short; I hold no animosity toward the member and, subsequently, I was very glad that I hadn’t entered into a contractual agreement with her. Prior to leaving, I informed her that I was rescinding my estimate and that I forgave her debt to me, however, I did tell her that I had expected more integrity. While driving away, I recalled that the member was a college professor. I only hope that her vulnerable college students are afforded more grace, when she grades their papers, then she extended toward me. I was grateful that I had dodged a bullet …well, almost.

We replaced our heater and several contractors determined the exhaust flue needed to be lined. Let There Be Light (John) inspected the flue and provided a verbal quote. Six months later, John provided a verbal quote again for $3,000. Several days prior to starting the work, John provided a written estimate. Based on the material cost and estimate, he was charging too much. He negotiated to $2,500, stating he did not like working in the city and deserved a premium for work quality. He provided a 45' stainless steel liner, custom chimney cap, and connected the hot water heater and left a hook up for the new gas furnace. He was on time, clean, and high quality work. He is extremely talkative and proud of his work. He is more expensive than other chimney sweeps for Philadelphia. He failed to disclose that he does not like working in the city and charges a premium for the work. I would only hire contractors that are comfortable with working in the city.

Response from Let There Be Light Chimney Sweep
In my opinion, your carefully considered word should always be your bond. I’m still astounded that I fell for the old “Good Cop, Bad Cop” routine. In a nutshell, I gave a ballpark estimate to the member for a stainless steel, heater flue, chimney liner, till she could tell me what new appliance choices she was going to make. Six months later, she called to say that she wanted to go ahead with the liner, and I agreed to the same price. Two months later, she sent a small deposit and I commenced to order the liner and some very expensive, custom, stainless steel parts, specifically for her 1840’s vintage, extremely tall, row house in downtown Philadelphia, PA. She was the “Good Cop.” Incredibly, less than 2 days before the installation, her husband called and began to complain about price, based on what I knew to be several faulty assumptions. He staggered me, because he had had over 8 months (more than 240 days) to consider my offer, or to choose another company, but now he wanted to talk price, long after a signed, written, binding contract was in effect. I was so close to “cutting bait” and throwing away the custom parts, but I relented due to his effusively gratuitous promises to highly recommend me to his associates, if I would just put the liner in for less. In retrospect, I should have had my head examined for lowering the already bargain price, since he ostensibly never planned on keeping his word to me anyhow. On installation day, nobody got to see the amazing amount of work it took to do this job, because neither of the owners was there, however, the live-in housekeeper was on hand to let me in. I can’t believe that I extracted a rotted and jammed, nearly 5-story, metal liner and replaced it with new stainless steel, in addition to all the expensive custom parts and multiple connections, for so little, but at least I had a satisfied customer, or so I thought. Obviously, he was the “Bad Cop. While he should have nominated me for sainthood, he gave me less than stellar grades. In the end, I learned that all he wanted was excellent work for free and that my live-in housekeeper is my wife.
