John is professional, honest and very knowledgeable - about pretty much anything and everything, but especially chimneys. I could’ve talked to this guy for hours on end. I consulted John to discuss possible solutions for our aging and out-of-code wood stove setup. He explained in detail the pros and cons of all options with regards to cost, efficiency and environmental factors. He offered several recommendations for the best methods for our specific scenario. He did an excellent job cleaning the fireplace and the chimney while keeping the surrounding area clean. He gave a practical solution to solve the fireplace insert allowing cold air to come down the chimney and in the house when not in use. My brick chimney was leaking, such that when it would rain, water was coming down the inside of the chimney and splattering onto the place where the wood burns. John put multiple coats of ?Chimney Saver? liquid sealer onto the outside of my chimney. His work was well-explained, done meticulously, and thoroughly. For example, he repaired the top of the chimney and removed loose surface material from the bricks so that the sealer would adhere to firm brick surface. If he had not done this, the loose surface material would have eventually come off to expose brick material into which the sealer had not penetrated. What he did will make the treatment last longer. The treatment he did lasts 10 years. I will also note that a few years back, I consulted him on the carbon build-up (creosote) on the inside of the chimney. He said that he did not need to sweep the chimney, but recommended that I get a liquid to break down the creosote. On this most recent visit, he told me that the liquid was working. He also examined the flue for our gas furnace and cleaned and repaired the flue and confirmed that it was operating safely. I am very glad that I had this work done by a man who has integrity and long-term experience and performed the work as if it were his own home.

I called John because my wife agreed to a chimney sweep company which called us and came to clean our chimney, telling her that it would be $120. Luckily I was here when vacuumed out our zero clearance fireplace chimney. They did find cracks in the bottom and back;prefab panels in the fireplace fire box and they did a 'free' inspection of our furnace chimney which he then found some water 'damage' . They then told me that they would have to re-cement the furnace fireplace cracks and also cement the panels in the fireplace which they said will cost about $1200, they kept pressing that this needs to be done to prevent CO2, when I hesitated he said they would give me a 10% discount if I paid in cash. That set off some red flags in my head and as they were an out of state company we didn't even call. I told them to write up what they thought I needed and I'll discuss it with my wife and get back to them, after writing up the 'estimate' he said if you call before Monday then he can cut off another $150, which again made me even more leery. After they left I checked Angie's List (which I would have done if I knew my wife made the appointment) and found good reviews for Let There Be Light Chimney Sweep so I called them and left a message to see what their price would be for the work. I got a call around 8PM that evening from John - I was impressed that he called back that same evening. When I told him our situation he explained that I was approached by a typical 'gypsy' chimney sweep company and explained they did all the 'tricks' to get pressure you to pay for something that you didn't need. We spent the next hour or so on the phone discussing what I could do to fix the fireplace. He told me to make a cardboard template of the back and bottom panels of the fireplace and go to a metal shop to get them to create a 1/4 inch piece to fit in the fireplace, using fireplace cement to fill the cracks and then put in the steel piece. He said that will stop future fires from causing any more cracks and it will actually help the heat reflecting back to the room (not to mention painting it with heat paint will help the look), all total it should cost less then $150. He also mentioned that I should NOT cement the side panels which the NY company wanted to do because that will probably cause more problems with heat expansion (which implies either ignorance or they were looking to create future work). So thanks to Angie List I was able to get in contact with John who really impressed me with his honesty, knowledge, and professionalism. Not only did I save about a thousand bucks or so but his suggestion will increase the efficiency of my fireplace, needless to say when I do need a chimney sweep I'll be using Let There Be Light Chimney Sweep!

John was very thorough in not only cleaning the fireplace and chimney, but finding and fixing some problems I did not know about. Before performing any service beyond the scope of the basic sweep, he was careful to let me know how much it was going to cost; that is, the application of the preservative and the cost of the stainless steel caps. We had not used the fireplace in some fifteen years, and now feel comfortable doing so.

John was extremely informative of the procedure and recommended painting the chase cover with rust inhibitor rather than replacing the cover. He was kind and spent time with me on the phone explaining the procedure involved in the painting. He did not pressure me into any purchase of unneeded items or services. If you want to do yourself a favor call John for an estimate on your chimney. He will treat you fairly.

John Wisnewski was able to make an appointment within a few days of my call. He was running late to the appointment but called from the road at the time of the appointment to let me know, and he arrived just a few minutes later. He immediately went to the basement and checked out the problem. A recent home inspection had identified a serious issue--our gas water heater was exhausting carbon monoxide into the basement. John checked the system, confirmed the home inspector's finding. He then opened the exhaust pipes and checked the draft. Since the chimney was drawing well, and nothing was blocked, he determined that the likely problem was too narrow a pipe leading from the water heater to the chimney, exacerbated by 2 90-degree angles in that pipe. He said increasing the pipe from 3" to 4" could be enough to overcome the drag and get a good upward draw going. So he removed a small section of 3" pipe leading directly from above the water heater and replaced it with a 4" pipe, connected it about 20" away from the first 90-degree bend coming from the water heater and to the existing 3" pipe that traveled the rest of the way to the chimney. Worked like a charm. He showed me very clearly how it was now pulling all the exhaust up and out. We now have a clean bill of health for our water heater. This could have been a very big expensive job (we have a 3-story chimney in a 100+ year-old house), but he was able to diagnose and resolve the problem quickly and inexpensively. He also worked very efficiently and finished in time for me to make a meeting I'd told him about when we made the appointment. I was very pleased with the service, his knowledge, his creativity, his thoughtfulness and professionalism, and his quick and cost-effective solution. He's very sociable and informative, too, not just about chimneys but more broadly. Very interesting man. FYI, $225 was the cost of the inspection, and $150 was the cost of the repair. I was given to understand that the inspection was required once the deficiency had been identified by the home inspector.

The chimney had not been inspected for about 10 years and only used once or twice in that time. We had trouble operating the damper and wanted to know what it would cost to get the chimney into operational condition as well as options for upgrading the chimney. John arrived on time, was professional and did the inspection/cleaning while answering my questions regarding flue lining, ballpark cost and advantages of converting to a gas chimney. I like Johns style - he gives you a lot of information as he works. I would hire him again and fully recommend him.
