After three or four attempts to hire a masonry contractor I decided to sign up with Angies List. After reading their work history I decided to call Sabol Masonry. Sabol Masonry was very responsive to my chimney problem. I wanted to have the chimney repaired before winter and was running out of time. Sabol Masonry fit our job into their schedule, showed up on time and their price was right. Their craftsmen where also very professional and courteous. Explained what they where going to do in detail. Cleaned up nicely after the job was over. My wife was concerned about her flowers around the base of the chimney while the men were working but they remained undamaged. There was a little concern later in the afternoon about rain. The next morning they came by to check to see if everything was OK which it was. I would highly recommend their work.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced 35 year old mortar chimney cap. Repointed cracked joints and replaced multiple cracked and broken bricks on the face of the chimney. Also found a couple bricks that were not noticed upon initial inspection and went ahead and replaced them at no additional cost.

We had originally gave a "f" rating because of the communication issues. Since that time Paul came to our house. Discussed what we wanted done and gave us a fair estimate and included the $300.00 Angies list discount. We waited until Paul had time on his schedule to accommodate our larger job. It went very well. Paul called in advance to make sure we were still on schedule. They showed up every day right at 8 am. It was messy grinding out the old mortar but they did clean up every day that they were here. Paul kept in touch with my husband since he wasn't here during the day while they were working and it took almost 5 days to complete the job. When they were completed. Paul looked over what they did with me to make sure I was satisfied. I would hire him again.
Description of Work: Paul and his crew pointed all of the bricks on 2 sides of our home.

They came and since it was minor and they were in our area filled it in today (I called and left a message about the issue 2 days ago, Saturday); it looks good. They said it probably cracked because the masons that did the job 2 years ago didn't grind it down first and instead just filled it in. The workers were very knowledgeable and hard-working and my husband and I are very pleased! They did work for us before and I know it is quality work, and I wouldn't go with another masonry company other than them!
Description of Work: Filled in a stairway crack from our window down and 2 bricks above the window that was "fixed" before by another masonry company and cracked again.

Paul is very, very good at what he does. First, he priced the job fairly at about $1,000. Secondly, He told me that he couldn't get to the job until sometime in September which I was fine with. Finally, he told me the job was about one day's worth of work. Linda, Paul's admin, called me the end of August to schedule the job for the first week of September (just as promised). Paul and his crew (family) showed up on the scheduled date right on time at 8:00 a.m. They were very professional about how they handled themselves and very clean about their preparation. Paul showed up first to explain what they planned on doing and left his crew go to work. I got home around 4:00 p.m. or so to a job well done!! The pointing was perfect; joints mortar matched perfectly and the masonry was free of excess joint compound (bricks were clean!). The driveway seal was done very neatly and looked tight. However, the deal started to bubble.no problem!Paul came back and replaced!HIRE THEM!!!!
Description of Work: I had Paul come in June/July timeframe to quote some pointing of some cracks in my masonry as well as quote caulking of my driveway.

Original Review: Everything went great. The original estimate was actually a year prior. They were super prompt in arriving at my residence and drafted a quote over in a few days. Due to other financial circumstances, we put off the brickwork to this year. Luckily they were still willing to work with me and honored their existing quote. The office staff is great as Linda was very easy to work with in setting up times and what to expect. They came right on time and made the repairs as expected and cleaned up after themselves. A few days later I received a call that they would come back and clean off the brick that still had some dirt on it. They did some last final touches and everything looks really great now. Would use them again for sure. Update: You can see the service was performed on 9/3/2014, I am writing this on 3/9/2014. Already the new step's mortar is crumbling, most of the re-mortared bad areas have deteriorated. I don't know if they didn't use a good quality mortar or had no idea what they were doing. So basically this lasted a whopping 5 months before looking like garbage. I called them a month ago (2/4/2014) informing them of the issue, Linda abruptly told me they would come out (while she had someone else on another line) and take a look. Of course, didn't hear anything back. I am not in the game of needing to call and call and call to get results. If they address the issue, I will update the score here. But really, why pay so much for something that doesn't even survive 6 months. Last Update: They did get back to me and finally were able to come out and fix the parts where the mortar was already deteriorating. They could've just ignored me as they already had my money so I will give them kudos for coming back to right this.
Description of Work: Relaid entire top step and remortared bad areas and reset some brick that had fallen in a staircase.

We had a great experience using Sabol Masonry. Prior to having this work done we had little knowledge of causes of masonry issues. Not only was our chimney in dire need of repair, but we also had extensive cracks in the mortar on the sides of all of nearly all of our windows. Paul identified this as a lintel issue and took the time to explain the function of a lintel, what causes it to need to be replaced, and the process involved. The foreman Terry even showed us the old lintels so that we could see how damaged they were. Paul and his crew clearly have great knowledge and expertise. Paul and his crew arrived promptly on the scheduled start date. Before any work started, Paul and Terry overviewed all of the work that would be done and provided an estimated timeline. While we were overviewing job, we requested the additional work of the window sill pointing and added one more lintel to the workload. The crew was accommodating with the all of the additional requests. Paul provided us with an updated quote for the additional work and there were no unforeseen costs. We paid what the estimate was. The work was estimated to take one week and was finished within that time. This type of work creates a LOT of dust! During the work week, they kept the worksite organized and they cleaned up any debris everyday. At the end of the week they even washed down the windows and the brick to get all of the dust off of it. It was refreshing to see that they took great care when replacing the lintels. Our neighbors even commented that they couldn't believe that they took the bricks out "brick by brick". This allowed most of the brick to be reused. We showed Terry every single little crack that we could find, and sure enough, they spot pointed any crack around the entire house. On the chimney, the curved shoulder was completely replaced with new brick and a lot of new brick was used at the top of the chimney. The color is a great match! They also took the time to discuss the mortar color and dyed it to match our mortar. We couldn't be happier! Paul, Terry, and crew did a wonderful job and we highly recommend their services!
Description of Work: We had the chimney repointed down to the roofline. The very top of the chimney was rebuilt along with a new cement wash cap. The shoulder of the chimney was rebuilt using new brick and some areas on the chimney were spot pointed. We also had 9 lintels replaced and the areas around the lintel repointed. All 11 window sills were repointed and every crack around the entire house was spot pointed.

This is the 2nd time we have use Sabol. First time was on our old house. Mr Sabol promptly came came out and gave us an estimate. Most other masons never returned my calls. As the job was starting he took me around to the 2 chimneys to show me exactly what they would be doing. He said that 2 of the flues were not in use and we didn't need flue liners for them. We could just cap them off. He also said that since we didn't need those liners the price of the job would go down. If he never would have told me I would have been none the wiser. But it was nice to see the honesty and that Sabol was not going to charge me for something I didn't need.

Ended up getting to our job quicker than we had been told. However, it rained every day that week and they worked for 5 days. Workers came on time and completed the job in a timely and efficient manner. Upon completion the foreman and my husband went over the job. Our porch was crumbling prior so it was a vast improvement. However, I did end up calling Sabol's and asking if they could take off the concrete that had been left on the bricks (due to taking tarp on and off during the heavy rain). The foreman came out the next day and they removed the concrete as best they could and filled in a couple holes.
Description of Work: Took down about 20 feet of brick wall and rebuilt so that it was level and straight. Removed old mortar from front porch and steps and replaced with new mortar. Repaired other areas that needed to be re-mortared.

It was excellent. They put me in as soon as they could get me in their schedule and the weather was cooperating. So I wasn't waiting too terribly long. They were really good about getting me in as fast as their schedule and the weather would allow. Their estimate was very competitive compared to the other estimates I got. They were done in one day. The clean up was excellent and I was just very very pleased.

We got bids from 3 contractors. The first one wanted to remove 9 rows of brick and not replace them...basically all of the brickwork that was in keeping with architecture of that era. And his bid was way out of line compared to Sabol's. The second one gave us a bid, then called to say that our roof was too high, one of the chimneys was in a location that was difficult to access, and he didn't want to stand on slate. Paul Sabol restored and basically rebuilt all 4 of the chimneys, even talking with me about the color of grout that would look like the original grout. His crew was professional, polite and friendly. This was a dirty job, and I was pleasantly surprised to find them hosing down the area near our back door--every day!! And once they started the project, they came until it was completed. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had with a home project. I first called last fall to get a bid. I was told that they were booked for the whole year but my name could be added to the 2014 list and I would be called. It was months, but in early spring I was called and it was so worth the wait! One other point...I have light fixtures on the wall on the outside of my house. The project foreman told me that they bumped one with a ladder and would replace it for me. It wasn't visibly damaged, still worked, and I never would have noticed it. I told them it was fine, because it was. But I really appreciated their integrity.
Description of Work: We had to have 4 chimneys rebuilt on our 130-year old home. We have a slate roof and our home is 3 stories with 11' ceilings on first 2 floors.

Wonderfull, it looks beautiful!!! You can not tell from the street that there is a difference in the new and remaining walls/flower beds. The men that came to work were exceptional. They went above and beyond to go out into my back woods to find an old pile of bricks that the original owners had left from the 1950's. All this so they had enough matching brick from the old flower bed wall and these to make everything match. Terry (a worker, maybe team lead) was wonderful at keeping me in the loop as to what was going on. It was hard for me to remember all of the men's names, as there were so many of them. But all of them were very polite and tried to leave my flower beds as intact as possible. Linda in the office kept me up to date on everything through out the whole process and her husband was very prompt and courteous when coming out to do the estimate. I would recommend them to anyone and if need be, will defiantly use them again!!!
Description of Work: Removed crumbling flower bed wall the length of my front porch. Replaced with double width wall using bricks from the existing wall. Tied it in with the remaining bearing flower bed wall, fixing joints on that wall before they deteriorated further. Placed drain holes at the bottom of the new wall as requested.

This company provided me the lowest estimate and Mr. Sabol and his staff promptly returned my phone calls. In this day and age, I appreciate this small courtesy. The company was very accommodating to my schedule, as I had scheduled vacation time so that I could be hone when the work was done. The short story is that I purchased a home over a year ago that was built in the early 1950?s. I concluded that the previous owner(s) had not had this type of maintenance done since the house was built. As a result, the mortar around the window sills had significantly deteriorated and/or washed away. There were also several noticeable cracks in the outside brick wall due to the lintels expanding, contracting, and rusting away. Mr. Sabol and his crew cut away the mortar, removed the bricks, chiseled away the old mortar from the bricks, replaced the old rusted lintels with new ones, and then put the bricks back in place with new mortar. His crew also added mortar to several spots to seal some long cracks in the brick work. They also did some work on the chimney to add new mortar to several places where it had deteriorated on the chimney as well. This was a two day job, as I had this work done to nine windows, three walls, and one side door. After all the work was done, they came back on the third day to wash down the areas where they worked with detergent to wash away some stains and a good bit of dust. I considered this a positive experience. The crew came to work exactly when they said they would, did exactly what I agreed to in the estimate. They also removed and hauled they need to work around two windows and a door. The crew was able to get to several second story windows without much of a problem. They also addressed some issues with a garage wall even though I had specifically said to leave the wall as it is, because I was considering having the window removed and a door placed in the wall at some point in the future. I would also like to comment that they did a decent job of cleaning up all of the areas outside where they had been working. My only negatives were that they did not put several shutters that were taken down back up as securely as I thought they should have. I went back and did this myself so that the shutters were secured to my satisfaction. I also noticed after the crew had left that there was a larger gap between the side door and the brick and mortar of the outside wall than there had been previously. In some sections this gap was roughly1/4 of an inch and big enough for bugs to get into and nest. Again, I made the decision to address this issue myself with the caulking/mortar sealant from the hardware store to close off these gaps. I want to be clear, that since the final bill came to the exact amount of the estimate, I choose to address these issues myself. I concluded that these issues were outside the normal scope of a brick mason and probably outside their normal duties. Since they did some extra work on the garage wall, I figured this was a break even situation.

If all contractors conducted their businesses as Sabol Masonry Inc. does, there would be no need for Angie's List. We had a pronounced, ongoing spalling of brick on our chimney and on several walls of our home. We received estimates from four masons in the fall of 2013, and while Sabol was not the cheapest, they were certainly competitive. More importantly, they were the only contractor that proposed rebuilding our chimney rather than taking an "as needed" approach to addressing the underlying issue of original brick quality. For the estimate, Paul Sabol came to the house, walked the property and visually assessed the condition of the chimney, bricks and mortar around the whole house. He listened, answered my questions, solicited my feedback on his suggestions and was professional and considerate throughout our conversation. We received a written quote of the work discussed within 3 business days. We decided to contract with Sabol in 2013, but were not ready to have the work started until 2014. Sabol was obliging in this respect, agreed to contact us in the spring to schedule the work and honor the quote already provided. When the time came, we were contacted by the company to schedule the work and again they were accommodating in scheduling around our availability. Work began on 6/10 and due to weather lasted until 6/17. During the entire process of demolition and reconstruction the crew was remarkably polite and professional, showed up as scheduled and notified us well in advance when weather prevented them from working. I was impressed with the care they took in covering their work and materials during periods of rain and of how clean and organized the construction area was kept throughout the process. They were mindful of trying to preserve the landscaping in the immediate work area. Paul Sabol was regularly on-site and always happy to answer my questions and keep me informed as the work progressed. The end result was outstanding! Sabol was able to match the original brick (which is not common in our neighbourhood) and t**** the mortar so that the rebuilt chimney blends extremely well with the rest of the house. While the chimney was the focus of the work, the smaller area brick replacement and additional pointing was also performed with the same care and craftsmanship. Some additional pointing that was needed was discovered and attended to at no additional cost. Since the project was completed, several neighbours have stopped by to remark on the fine job done by Sabol. We agree and plan to have them back for additional work in the future.

They were very very good. When we first called them, the weather was not very good to have him on the roof safely so he can come back. We then called them later when the weather cleared and I appreciated. What he did was he addressed two of our chimneys, the crown on the top was replaced and he also pointed some of the joints in our fireplace chimney. The thing I liked about it was they had a cover into the mortise so that it would match my bricks mortar. Since our house was build in the 70s the weather has changed the color of the mortar and so he matched it up and it look like it was a fresh. I appreciated that. I have seen some homes where they had their fixed and it looks obvious and it was repaired so I was pleased with the work.

I initially reached out to Masons in October 2013, and like many of the other providers I contacted Sabol was booked through the end of the season as Winter started early and didn't let up. However, unlike all of the other providers I reached out to they actually called me back in the Spring to check in and see if the work was still needed. Paul Sabol came out to give the estimate as scheduled and the price was right in the range I was looking to pay (another provider refused to do the work unless they did the whole house - a $13,000 quote!). Their scheduler - Linda, I believe - was extremely courteous and called to let me know when the crew would arrive. They showed up on time, did an excellent job, and were very, very clean. They even made sure my neighbors closed their windows because of the potential mortar dust! They repaired 2 window lintels and pointed all the bricks up from the lintels wrapping around the side of the house. No more leaks into the house and it no longer looks like my house is shrugging. I cannot recommend Paul and his team more highly, and will definitely use them in the future. (They even offered to fix a crack in the sidewalk at no cost! Seriously they are very, very good!)

They did a great job; the waiting list was about a month but it was worth the wait. They definitely knew what they were doing. They replaced a lot of spalling bricks that we had (we have the 1960's clay bricks) and our house looks much better. Our chimney was leaning, and they rebuilt it from the roofline up, and I asked for a chimney cap which I had to pay more for but wanted.
Description of Work: Rebuilt our chimney, replaced spalling bricks.
