Carl and his crew did a very good job. Carl is a very straightforward and nice person who is clearly very committed to doing quality work. He is also very honest and fair, and is a pleasure to work with. As the services of his small operation seem to be in significant demand (for understandable reasons), it did take some time for him to start the job from when I first contacted him. However, Carl was very clear and accurate about the length of the wait, and once the job started, he started and finished on time. The quality of the work they performed was very high, and they definitely did more than what some other contractors had proposed--yet their rates were the same or lower. Carl was very easy to work with and is a very serious craftsman. Likewise, his coworkers were very pleasant and reliable. I recommend him highly to others, and will definitely use him in the future.
Description of Work: Carl and his team performed masonry repair work on my home, and also installed a stone patio. Our home is an older stone colonial in Philadelphia and finding a mason who was interested in maintaining the physical integrity of the structure while keeping true to the original historic style was important. Some of the work--especially in a separate garage structure was fairly extensive.

We had a previous estimate well over $1,000 more than this company. Though I had been warned that it might take months to get Carl and his team scheduled, he agreed to take a look and be honest if I needed to get the work done sooner. He thought it could wait, but called me back later in the day to confirm that he was going to fit us in at the end of the week. Carl called me regularly to give me updates, and the work occurred on the exact time schedule he assessed.
Description of Work: Our chimney was in need of serious help, both brick and stone pointing.

Carl contacted me very shortly after I contacted him. He came out and gave me an estimate, but said he couldn't do it until the Fall. I waited the 4 months, and it was well worth it.
Description of Work: Removed cracked stucco on chimney and replaced it with an almost perfect match to the rest of the stucco. They did a beautiful job.

They came out in the spring to just fix the steps because they did not have time to completely re-do the job. They were very busy, but made time to fix the steps for me, which I thought was nice. They charged me $300 for this job and stated that they could come back in the fall and re-do the whole job for about $3000. They stated that this $300 would be a down-payment for the entire job. They came on time and were professional. They did a good job. I plan on using them for the complete job in the future.
Description of Work: I called them to take out and replace some stone steps for me. They advised me to take out the top part of the steps, because this is what was causing the steps to break.

Carl is very interested in providing a perfect product. Since my house is almost 100 years old, the bricks are an odd size that you can't get anymore. Carl searched for bricks close enough, then made additional cuts to "hide" that the bricks were not the same size. He also matched the mortar by dyeing it exactly to the original color. We still need lots of work done on the mortar throughout the house, yet since we are on a tight budget, he indicated which things should be repaired right away (the window, because we were having new windows put in), and which could wait a while, and which were purely cosmetic. Since we are renovating the house we opted to get only what we needed done right away, and call him back later for the other repairs, and then finally the cosmetic stuff. We had other Angie's List masonry contractors come out to give us estimates that were lower. He told us honestly that his prices were higher because he does not like to cut corners and produce a less than perfect product. The small area he did was pretty much perfect. It makes the rest of the other repairs done over the years look terrible! Hopefully I can get the whole house redone correctly in the future and it will really look good. The only downside to this guy is he is really busy so he usually schedules very far out (couple of months). However, since we were working in an established time frame (the windows were already ordered) he came out on a Saturday and got this small job done for us.
Description of Work: Replaced wet/crumbling bricks along one length of a window (a length of about 60", 2 bricks deep).

Carl and his crew showed up on a Saturday to erect the scaffolding. Since rain was forecasted that day, they didn't expect to get much more than that done, but the rain held off, so they stayed and started grinding out the mortar. Bob and a few other guys were the ones who did the most work on the house. They did a great job of cleaning up after themselves every day, especially considering what a dusty mess the grinding creates. They worked all week and on Saturdays, too, and on the last weekend of the job, they and Carl worked on Sunday as well. The work they did was beautiful! They made our beat-up old house look amazing! Carl was easy to get in touch with, and kept us up-to-date throughout the whole process. The entire crew was punctual, professional and meticulous.
Description of Work: The bricks on the exterior of our house had crumbling mortar and/or gaps where the mortar used to. We had to have the remaining mortar ground out and then have the whole house brick pointed. This included the front porch (including two pillars), the front of the house, chimney, side of the house, back porch and back of the house.

chimney repair

We have had a ceiling leak in our bedroom for well over a year. Two roof repairs, the second done after a professional inspection, did not solve the problem. The only other possibility was that the water was coming in through the stone chimney, which is attached to the stone house wall immediately outside our bedroom. I called Carl because of the glowing reviews of his work that I found on Angie's List. At first he said he was booked up until at least October (I called in July), but when I mentioned Angie's List, he relented and said he would come right away for an estimate and would do the work as soon as he could find a gap in his schedule, since it involved an actual leak. When Carl came to give the estimate, which was within a few days, he arrived with a ladder and examined the chimney closely. We had already had a previous estimate from another highly rated repairman on Angie's List, but he had only looked up at the chimney from the back yard, so we were very impressed by Carl's thoroughness. We then showed him extensive other work that needs doing on our very large, three-story stone house: many, many cracks that need pointing, as well as a front walk made of stones set in surface cement that has pulled away from the stones over the years. This walk needs to be taken up, dug out, and redone in poured cement. In addition, some window wells need repair and so does a set of back steps. From the other repairman, we had already gotten an estimate for all the work including the chimney. When Carl sent his estimate a couple of days later, it was very significantly lower. In fact, the difference was so great that I would have been worried about the quality of work we would receive, if it hadn't been for the consistent raves on Angie's List. We hired Carl to do the chimney as soon as possible and the rest of the work in October or early November. This past week (next to last week of August) Carl and his helpers arrived (by appointment) at 7:30 a.m. A short while later, Carl came and brought us some broken pieces of cement along with the news that the chimney crown, not visible until the cap was removed, had completely crumbled and that he would mold a new one. We both had to leave, but when my husband returned at about 2:30 p.m., the work was finished and the workmen gone, leaving no mess of any kind. When Carl's bill came, he charged $100. less for the chimney repair than he had estimated, because, he said, it hadn't taken the maximum time it could have. Carl will be back to do our other work in the fall. We will probably ask him to do more than we have yet shown him; he seems extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and obviously more than fair about his charges. So far we are delighted with his work and with his way of explaining everything to us in detail before he does it. In all, he is a very pleasant person to deal with.
Description of Work: Carl and his helpers put a new crown on our three-story stone chimney and waterproofed the whole chimney. Since the chimney attach's to the house right outside the master bedroom, we are hoping that this repair will end our struggle with a leak in the bedroom ceiling that has plagued us for over a year.

I appreciated that he was very busy but he still came out and gave me the estimate when I was home. He showed up on time, was very personable and was always available by cell phone to change the schedule. He is very professional and knowledgeable. The price was in the same ball park as others, but his presentation was the best. He hasn't done the work but I expect him to be excellent.

We knew in advance that there would be a considerable wait for this project, but we had lots of estimates and interviews and as soon as we met Carl, and the carpenter he works with, we knew we wanted them to do the job. Carl made our home look much better than anyone expected, and we're going to use him to pave our back yard soon. I would recommend him without reservation. His crew were punctual, polite and thorough. They cleaned as they went, and did everything that was promised. We couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Carl and his wonderful crew did cleaning and pointing of our 1860's 3-story redbrick home, which was a mess from work done by previous owners. Carl cut out the brick so that we could return the windows to their original size, and worked with a carpenter to install the windows.

First job, installing the French drains, was a 2-day job completed on schedule one month after his original on-site diagnosis & estimate. Carl clearly took pride in analyzing a problem and coming up with a solution, then implementing the solution with high quality workmanship, all the while explaining to me why he planned / did everything. I felt fully informed. To my delight he and his assistants really did clean up their mess, and they were always most pleasant communicators without wasting time in irrelevant chitchat. Carl is a man who takes due pride in high quality work and lives up to his word. As a extra benefit of his service, he filled in two small sunken areas in the basement floor. Second job, replacing the sidewalk, was a 2-week job also completed on schedule. Carl was most helpful in scheduling the job on my very tight schedule-- between the sewer line replacement & my going out of town for 6 weeks, during which time the land fill over the new sewer line needed time to settle before the sidewalk could be laid. He and his assistant worked steadfastly with the weather, and again approached the project analytically, assessing the best way to approach each next step as they proceeded. The result was outstanding. Instead of using the existing curb as he had planned, it proved to be too much out of alignment, so he replaced it entirely at no added cost. He re-caulked the front steps as an extra benefit. The pictures of the outcome show far better than I can in words the excellence of craftsmanship in the finished sidewalk, window well & curb. Again all this was executed by Carl and Casey in a highly professional and personable manner, again I was informed throughout, and again they cleaned up well. My new sidewalk became the talk of the street it looks so good!
Description of Work: First job was to address persistently leaking cement/brick walls in my basement-- water sealing and repeated applications of hydraulic cement had failed to resolve the problem, and shoring up the walls from the exterior was not feasible. Carl came up with a solution: install French drains at the base of the recalcitrant walls, & feed them into an existing sub-floor French drain pipe that he discovered disgorges into a sump pump. Second job was to rebuild my sidewalk and an affected portion of my neighbors sidewalk, after a plumber had replaced the sewer pipes from my house to the street. On the neighbors property he put in 4" thick concrete & re-laid brick pavers in their original basket weave pattern. On my property he replaced the sidewalk, window well & curb replacement. He put 4-6" crushed stone under new pavers in herringbone pattern, in a bed of sand, sloping them from the house to the street.

Carl was profession from beginning to end of the job. He had a very nice helper who was very good as well. He dealt with complicated details with ease.
Description of Work: We hired Carl of Artistic Masonry to stucco a wall in center city, Philadelphia. He showed up on time, he did beautiful work and completed on time. There were odd bumps in the wall that we hadn't foreseen and he dealt with them beautifully. This was a cinder block wall with limited access that he stuccoed. He also built a flagstone capping for the wall.

Carl is really busy, so I had to wait about a month for him to do the work--but it was totally worth it! (And he was up front with me about the wait from the beginning.) Carl and his team were polite, courtesy, and the job only took 2 days. He is super detail oriented and explained every step of the work. They did an amazing job! Carl and his guys were a joy to work with. We ran into difficulty with the shed foundation placement due to exceptionally large tree roots. Carl came up with a solution that solved the problem and probably cost him extra money in unanticipated amounts of rebar and extra cement. The pad could now hold a house on it instead of a shed. The concrete pad out front looks like a beautiful rug: mitered bluestone border around a black/gray/white exposed aggregate middle. Very nice job indeed. Carl will also seal this in a couple weeks. This company is a class act indeed and I intend to use them in the fall for a bluestone walkway and also to re-stucco our house next year!

Carl, Dennis and Joe were incredible to work with! They arrived on time each morning (5 days total) and they worked the whole day through. The start and end times were important - as we work odd hours and need to flexibility to come and go. We were so comfortable with Carl and his crew that we gave them a key to our house for one morning when we needed to leave earlier than they would be able to make it to the house. Two things really stood out -1) they left my house cleaner than it was when they arrived! and 2) they are friendly, hard-working and take the time to describe the entire process to me as they went about their work. In addition a few small things came up that costed more than Carl had anticipated - but he would not allow us to pay him for it. In the spring, Carl will be doing a large job for us - 20K - and we are looking forward to it! The basement looks fabulous, and we are no longer dreading this huge project in the spring because we believe Carl will do an excellent job!
Description of Work: Carl and his crew of two (Dennis and Joe) performed the following work: a. Remove and dispose of all unwanted woodwork and partition walls in the basement. Remove any loose or deteriorated cement from the basement walls. Repair these areas with a mix of concrete sand, Type N masonry cement and Octoweld masonry bonding agent. c. Re stucco all surfaces of the walls using a mix of bar sand, Type N masonry cement and Octoweld masonry bonding agent. d. Brush finish walls to a light texture in order to be painted.

I was very happy with the work that Carl and his crew did. Carl was very professional and returned phone calls and was prompt at every meeting that we scheduled. He was a good communicator and listener and was very helpful from start to finish of this project. He had good ideas about what product to use but also was interested in understanding my vision of what the end product would look like. He was very effective at finding solutions to any obstacles which came up during the project. His initial estimate of time and money was very accurate. Having dealt with every type of contractor (plumbing, electrical, framing, kitchen, bath, heat/AC) in the past since my home was completely remodeled I can say with confidence that Carl was one of the easiest contractors I have had the pleasure to meet and work with. I feel that his work is of the highest quality and that his morals and ethics are of an equal standard.

When I first contacted Carl, he returned my call within 24 hours, and came within the next few days to give me an estimate. The estimate was precise, laying out several different options and the cost of each. As the time to complete the work approached, Carl called me to keep me updated about when he would start the job. And he let me know when to expect him and how long the job would take. He was true to his word each and every time, and I am VERY happy with the work. Carl and his crew were polite and conscientious workers. They came to the house when they said they would, and did exactly the work they promised, for exactly the price they quoted. They cleaned up everything as well. Carl also explained everything he was doing as the job went along (because I was curious and asked lots of questions). He also recommended a colleague for some carpentry work I need. I'm absolutely planning to hire Carl again for my next masonry job.
Description of Work: Carl Yockey and his delightful crew of two spent five days completing their work at my Mt. Airy home. They dug out all of the crumbling concrete in the alleyway next to my house and framed it out for repouring new concrete and new steps (2 of them). They had to match the pour to the neighboring property. And they poured 4 yards of concrete in the end. They also patch pointed the stonework on the front of the house on the second floor fixing some roof damage while they were at it to waterproof the house. The stone pointing is beautiful. Carl matched the color of the prior work, and the style of the pointing. It's lovely.

Carl's work ethic is amazing. From start to finish, he treated my home like it was his home. He involved me in every decision giving me options from which to choose how I wanted things to look. He also gave me his advice based on his experiences when I asked for it. I had 4 estimates for the work I wanted to have done. Carl's estimate included every aspect we had discussed at a very fair price plus he was easy to work with. He was up front about how busy his schedule was but assured me that he would be able to complete my job before it got cold out. He arrived with 2 workers when he said he would. He did all the work himself and cleaned up each day. He was on time, if it rained, he called to discuss his plan for the day. He will be back to do a patio for me and some interior work this winter. I have never been happier with any contractor I have worked with. Plus I received 10% off on the total price due to an Angie's List coupon. He is busy but worth the wait!!
Description of Work: Removed garage door and poured a new footer as a base for the cinder block wall. He built frames for and installed two 66" used replacement windows in the wall and capped them. He then stuccoed the entire back of my house and one side of the house.

Carl and his crew were not just good. They were great! They were always on time, always called if there were a problem (rain!), and worked diligently and professionally. The work took about a week and a half, and turned out far, far better than I could have imagined. Would I hire them again? In an instant! Worth waiting 1 month+ to get Carl and his team.
Description of Work: I hired Artistic Masonry after being disappointed with another mason who did not show up. Carl, head of AM, came out on schedule for a quote, got back to me quickly with the written quote, and gave me a start date several weeks out. The work done included rebuilding a chimney, placing a new chimney cap, waterproofing the brick on the chimney, demolition on some old structures, pouring concrete footers, brick pointing, which involved setting up a 3 story scaffolding, building and stuccoing new rear entry pony walls, and laying down a new patio including decorative borders with numerous types of colored brick pavers and limestone steps, with limestone decorative elements scattered in.
