Carl and his workers were extremely mannerly and did an excellent job. They arrived on time and the area was cleaned when they finished. This is the second time I have used Artistic Masonry and will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Carl covered several worn areas on the rear of my property with fast drying stucco. The badly worn areas had exposed screening. There were other areas where the screening was not exposed and he covered those areas with a light coat of stucco. The rear of the house in one area has three stories and he was able to cover a small area there also. He arrived promptly and had two workers with him. Carl also caulked around several windows and one of his helpers fixed some holes in a basement wall.

We have had Carl do work for us before and we can't recommend him highly enough. He's pleasant, efficient and the finished product looks better than expected. He listens and offers suggestions we never thought of.
Description of Work: Carl increased the drainage at the entrance to our garage to keep out heavy rains. He dug two holes, filled them with stones, then finished the top with a grille to keep out leaves, etc.

They did a phenomal job! I'm a very particular person & they met/exceeded all my expectations. The point work is very clean & well executed. I live in Center City & have never seen the excellent work as these guys do. They cleaned up after themselves after each day & left their work area very tidy. Carl & his crew are the nicest guys. They were very professional, respectful & nice. My partner & I felt very comfortable around them. I can't speak well enough of them & will definitely use them in the future for any masonry work. I wish I could use them for general contracting work too. Because they do such great work, there is a bit of a wait, but they are well worth the wait. Look no further. USE THEM!!!

Contacted in September 2009. Returned call, said they'd be working close by in Mount Airy in two weeks, and it would save travel time from Swarthmore if I could wait. Had no problem with that at all. Two weeks later, in October 2009, called to check, representative said there were family problems, would contact as soon as possible. Quite understandable. Still waiting for that contact, long forgotten I believe they might do great work----if they ever show up.

I would have liked to secure the contractor for the services;however I was satisfied that they timely followed up with me to let me know that they did not service my area.
Description of Work: Contacted provider. Received timely follow up that they did not service my area.
I live on an historical preservation block. My neighbors are not afraid to share opinions. Can you imagine a unanimous thumbs up on a contractor's work - that everyone sees every day? That's what Carl earned from me and my neighbors. The work was beautiful and the work experience was all positive. Because his Angie's list ratings were stellar, I had expected to wait for availability once I contacted him. I had to wait several months, but it was worth it, especially if you are particular. Regardless, Carl set my expectations about scheduling in advance and contacted me when he promised to. Refreshing. He and his workers were great - friendly, polite, knowledgeable, hard working (again, supported by neighbors' reports!) and communicated clearly about the work to be done - both at the time of the estimate and the time of doing the job. They handled a variety of tasks beautifully. When additional decision points arose, he contacted me and explained options clearly. While I have no expertise in the area, he educated me in a way that enable me to feel that I owned the process and the result. Kudos and thanks. p.s., He's busy. Don't use him as a price point. Just use him to do the work.

I needed my chimney repointed. I left a message for Carl in the morning of 4/8 and he returned my call that evening. He said that he was busy until late summer, but that he would stop by for an estimate. I really appreciated the fact that he was honest about his availability. On 4/11, he called to say that he had stopped by. I did not call him back since I knew I wanted the work done before the end of summer, but I really appreciated his honesty and his caring. I would have followed up with him for an estimate if he was available earlier. I really liked his attitude.

I had an amazing experience with Carl and Artistic Masonry, from start to finish. My initial search started with Angies List. I got a few quotes, and was most impressed with Carl. His estimate was fair, I was very happy with the expertise he presented, and I got a good feeling from him. With the seasons and expense, I waited about 6 months before moving ahead with the project, and during that time, Artistic Masonry was further recognized by Angie's List as a stand-out, which did make me even more confident in my selection. Service and Care -> Carl was always friendly, available and genuinely interested in my satisfaction. He kept me up to date every step of the way, reviewed all decisions with me in advance, and was always direct & honest. Furthermore, my home currently has a tenant, who also concurred that Carl and his crew were some of the most curteous, respectful and quality teams. Quality -> I've been thrilled. This team doesn't take short cuts. My bricks are fairly uneven and we went with a more historic-mortar mix, both making it a challenging job at times. With this mortar mix, they had to layer the mortar, which was an extra step from what was initially expected. They did this because it was the right way to move ahead, even though it would take more time. In addition, Carl has been great at setting expectations for me. There had been a lot of patch jobs over the years, and Carl anticipated that much of this could not be completely addressed. But, the finished product is amazing. It looks beautiful & they've done a very clean job. Both structurally and aesthetically, I couldn't be happier. And from a pricing standpoint, despite delays and challenges, Carl stayed true to his estimate. The project was estimated to take about 2 weeks. Project was complete in 2 1/2 weeks.

Popular, so took a long time to get to me, but was up front about the time window and was accurate within a week for a weather dependent job. Extremely pleasant and very professional. Responsive to customer. Did an excellent job. Terrific color and texture match. Did not leave job in the middle for another like so many do. Attended to the details, including clean-up. Excellent value. Highly recommend.

Awesome workmanship by Artistic Masonry. Carl Yockey was very professional and had an experienced and great crew. We were very pleased with every aspect and feel fortunate to have had the work done by this contractor. Stucco repair was somewhat of an education for us and Carl made sure we understood the details. He was timely in doing the job, and we believe the work we received was an excellent value. Looks beautiful too!
Description of Work: Repaired and re-stucco the fairly high chimney and low patio walls. Cut out and repaired all damaged and deteriorated sections of chimney and patio walls. Wire lathed and stucco all sections. Repointed flagstone patio with some resetting and replacement.
It tokk a long time for Carl to get us on his schedule but once we made the appoinment they were punctual and festidious about doing a good job. They fixed some problems we had with a Bay window, our chimney and most of all a drainage issue in the rear of our hose that 2 companies have attemp-ted to remedy in the past and did shoddy work. Carl made this a permanent repair, and delayed filling the area in until the next day so that I could inspect and understand what he found and what he was doing. Carl and his men are real craftsmen who take great pride in their work. They did a great job and left the areas they worked on cleaner than they found it. Carl also stopped by a few months later to check that everything was OK. How often does a contractor do that!
Description of Work: Stone pointing, replace a flagstone sill under a large bay window in the front of my home, tightened up the restraining cap and pointed a gap in our chimney, and excavated a paver patio do redo the underground drainpipes and connectors in the rear of the house.

Mr. Yockey was great at communicating with us, even though he was extremely busy with other jobs. He called in advance to let us know when he would be able to do the job. He was very professional and good to deal with. The walkway job turned out to be much more labor intensive than expected because of tree root growth. He clearly had no intention of charging more than the original estimate, even though the job was so much more difficult than expected. I did give him an extra hundred, however, because I don't believe in taking advantage of anyone's integrity.
Description of Work: A drunken driver had rammed into my mailbox which was set in concrete. The concrete (a big chunk at the street end of my driveway) was lifted out of the ground. Mr. Yockey and his crew broke up the damaged concrete and reset the new concrete. (I had a unique mailbox - the post was an airplane propeller! The previous owner of my house was a pilot.) He also removed a walkway at my husband's rental property and reset it. Both of these jobs turned out beautifully!

Im sorry that this customer was upset that we dont service her area. We are a small company and we pride ourselves on quality and customer service. I dont remember this customer personally...but i do know that when i recieve a call or e mail from someone outside our service area I always respond letting them know that we cant provide an estimate. I feel that this is the professional thing to do as opposed to not responding at all. I truely hope that she was able to get the work done by a good company and that she is happy with the results. Carl is a terrific person. He's proud of his work and has a right to be. His workers are just as serious about their work as he is and always responsive to my requests. I'd used him before for another job and would definitely hire him again. Unfortunately, though, the water has reappeared, though only once since the repairs were made, and then, only minimally.
Description of Work: Carl and his workers removed the stucco from one side of my 3-storey-high, 240-year-old house where water always ran down the wall on the inside during torrential rainstorms. They found places where leaks were occurring -- as well as some neat really old wood scraps with writing on them that linked them to the 18th century that had been used for lathing -- repaired them, as well as attending to additional damage they found, restuccoed the side, replaced rotted window frames, and repainted it all to match the rest of my house.

We arranged for a mutually acceptable start date and Carl, Bob and Dennis arrived right on time, with all the materials ready to start. As Carl's suggestion, we had already viewed various ceiling tiles at a major home improvement stoer so he knew exactly what we wanted. At the end of the first day, the ceiling was already taking shape. The team was always ready to ask us what we wanted if a decision came up and offer helpful advice. The whole project took just over a week (right on with the time estimate). We now have warmer floors upstairs and better lightening in a formerly dark basement. Carl's price was very reasonable (he even included a winter discount) and our cost for the extra jobs was really good. Because of his skills, reliability and ability to work closely with us, we're thinking about engaging him for some outside work this year.
Description of Work: Because of the stucco and basement work Carl and his team had done last fall, we engaged him to install a drop ceiling in our basement along with additional basement insulation and recessed lighting (along with a few other odd jobs)

I asked Carl to come take a look at my partially waterproffed basement and discuss with me possibilities for completing the job and, perhaps, even finishing the basement at some "financially feasible" point. This visit was to gather information, not to arrange a contract for work, but Carl spent a relaxed amount of time discussing options and ideas with me. He was clearly very knowledgeable and did a great job of showing me pertinent things about my basement and explaining what he could do. I learned of his background and interest in artistic projects and was impressed with his creative enthusiasm and ideas. In the course of the conversation, I asked if he could take a look at my sump pump (put in by someone else a few years before) as I had never heard it activate on wet days. He informed me that I had a "cheap pump" that was not installed properly and probably wouldn't work correctly. Even though it would be a small job compared to others he normally does, he said he would be happy to get me a good pump and install it, which he did not long after. I was so pleased with Carl's attitude, manner, professionalism, etc., that I will definitely call him for much bigger "basement and patio projects" I have in mind as soon as I can afford them.
Description of Work: Replaced inadequate sump pump with a much better quality one.

We had a great experience with Carl and his crew at Artistic Masonry. The front sidewalk of our row home had been destroyed by the roots of a large tree. Carl was able to remove the concrete and grind down the roots which covered almost the entire work area. The new concrete looks great, directs water away from the house, and he installed a nice cobblestone-lined tree box for a new, smaller, tree. We had basement walls that were in pretty bad shape including a problem with a small amount of water entering through our back basement wall. Carl completely parged the walls getting into every exposed area (including in between all the first floor joists above) and giving the walls a clean, new look. He added an additional layer of water seal on the back wall. Carl also installed a french drain and sump pump along the back wall. After one heavy storm that definitely would have caused some water to penetrate our old wall, the basement remained dry. We are very happy with the results and it was a pleasure to work with Artistic Masonry.
Description of Work: Front sidewalk repair (which required the grinding of a large tree stump) with new cobblestone-lined tree box, basement wall parging with water seal on back wall, and installation of a sump pump with partial french drain.

The job went very well. Carl was a bit booked up on another job but was willing to do the work over the weekend. He showed up on time on Saturday and stayed late to make sure he was able to finish by Sunday. I even asked if he could take care of a few other minor jobs while he was there. Not only did Carl do the work, he only charged us for the materials. That's customer service! Carl does excellent work and is very professional.

Carl and his team were very professional. While it took some time to get the work scheduled, we were very glad we waited. Several of our neighbors have commented on the quality of the work, and my wife and I think the final result is beautiful. We plan to have Artistic Masonry do additional stone work on our house in the future. The work was done quickly, over the course of a few days. The team arrived on time in the morning, and made excellent progress each day on the job. Carl explained everything carefully, and the site was pristine once the work was completed. I highly recommend Artistic Masonry and will be working with Carl again in the future.
Description of Work: Carl and his team rebuilt our front exterior stairs. We have an old Victorian house with lots of stone work. Our front stairs were essentially collapsing on us. Carl and his guys tore everything but the side walls down to the ground, relaid the foundation, and built up new stairs. They added Pennsylvania bluestone treds and capped the arms with bluestone as well. The incorporated much of the existing stone into the risers, which saved us some money. They finished up by repointing the risers and sides.
Carl and his crew were amazing. They took extraordinary pride in their work and it turned out beautiful. To give an example of how much Carl cares about perfection, we have a fence around our backyard. Because of the placement of the posts, one portion of the brick patio was about a 1/4" off from the rest. We would not have even noticed, but Carl was quite irked by it and after pointing it out to us, explaining the many ways he had tried to remedy the situation without success. The ribbon joints they repaired on the side of our home are exceptionally beautiful. We would highly recommend this company to anyone who cares deeply about quality of workmanship.
Description of Work: We had our entire home and our retaining wall repointed. We also had our two-level wood deck replaced with a single level brick patio. Finally, we had some repair work done on the pathway and steps to our house.
