We were very pleased with Carl and his crew (and I am very particular as to how workman conduct themselves on a job). They were on time every morning, kept the work areas clean, were friendly and pleasant, and left NO cigarette butts on the ground (one of my pet peeves). I thought their work was of excellent quality and would not hesitate to have them back again in the future. Because of all the rain this year, we did wait longer than I normally would for the job to commence but the weather is not under Carl's control and I'm very glad that we did wait. He touched base with me periodically to let me know where we stood in terms of a start date which I really appreciated. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: We have three large slate patios surrounding our home, all of which were sorely in need or re-pointing. Most of the old cement was ground out and replaced, steps were reset, and a few slates that were actually damaged were replaced as well. In addition to the patios there were many areas of the main house and carriage house that also needed to be patched. During the job we discovered a small leak on our third floor which turned out to be coming from one of the chimneys. The entire chimney was re-pointed as an add on to the original estimate.

I contacted Carl in May 2011 to look at our chimney that was falling apart on top. He gave us a minimum and maximum estimate for repairs, depending on the extent of the damage. I knew in advance that scheduling the repairs would take a long time due to Carl's busy work schedule. I was fine with that since it was not an urgent situation, and I really preferred Artistic Masonry to the others that gave us estimates. The work was scheduled and rescheduled several times due to weather and other situations, but Carl was always in touch and apologetic. He kindly gave us a discount for our patience. The work was finally done the week of November 14th. Once the scaffolding was constructed Carl was able to fully determine the extent of the damage and gave us the good news that repairs would be on the minimum side- basically patch and paint. Two workers completed the job in about 5 days. They were very courteous, clean, and pleasant to deal with. Carl was in touch and gave me updates throughout the work. Although it was a long process, I'm really glad we chose Artistic Masonry. They were great to deal with and the work was very well done. Our chimney looks brand new.

Once his team arrived, they worked fast, finishing the repointing in a few days. The chimney looks great and it's nice to not have to worry about it anymore. Our house has lots of old stone work around it, which we love, and are glad to have found a local mason who will be able to help us maintain it in the future.
Description of Work: Carl and his team repointed the chimney of our 1920's home this fall and added a new cap. The chimney was in pretty bad shape when we arrived earlier this year, and even had a plant growing out of it. Luckily, Carl was able to schedule us in before it got too cold.

He assisted in the design, and was there every day as far as I could tell. The work appeared to be painstaking on their part, and took a day longer than expected due to a couple of unexpected glitches( the original stoop was deeply embedded), which satisfied me completely. Just by observing the way they did the work told you of their dedication. I would highly recommend him, and would give him additional work if I had it. It was a 3-4 month wait before they could schedule the work, but I'm guessing that is because they are in high demand. I was glad I did not go with someone else.
Description of Work: Carl removed my old concrete sidewalk, and front stoop, and replaced with red pavers in a herringbone pattern. All the concrete was removed. They had to negotiate an incline and did so successfully The job took about 4 days.

After having waited for months, we have to start the process once again.
Description of Work: We accepted their bid to to work on our property. They told us they'd do the job in August. They delayed it to September and by October they had backed out of the job. In the meantime we had honor our end of the bargain by not having another company do the job. NOT RELIABLE.

Response from Artistic Masonry Co
I take offense when a customer says I'm not reliable. I will admit that sometimes we get very backed up due to weather and certain job circumstances. In this particular case, we were going through a difficult family crisis. My mother was having some serious health issues and at the same time I injured my back. What this customer failed to mention was that I had her scheduled for a job about a year earlier and a week before the start date I called to schedule and she canceled on me....DUE TO FAMILY ISSUES SHE WAS FORCED TO MOVE!. I totally understood. If there was a customers version of Angie's List I would not have put a negative report on about her.... because I'm a realistic and understanding person. Life happens. She was not the only person who I had to cancel the job on. Every other customer was sympathetic. This is just written proof that no matter how hard you work someone will eventually be unhappy. I'm OK with that, but to personally attack my character and call me unreliable is out of line. We do quality work at fair prices and all of my other reports will reflect that. I'm happy to say that my Mother is feeling better and my back is healed. Artistic Masonry is slowly expanding so we can offer the same quality work and service to even more people. Thank you for allowing me to speak my mind.

My husband and I first contacted Carl Yockey from Artistic Masonry in October 2010 regarding our crumbling, concrete steps and some foundation repointing.I contacted a few masons and Carl impressed me because he spoke with authority on older home (ours was built in 1891). He mentioned that his company had a lead time of 4-5 months at that point, so if we wanted to schedule step replacement for the summer, give him a call at the end of winter. In February 2011 we were finally ready to contract the work, and Carl came out to give me a quote. I had a few photos of steps I liked, and we knew we wanted to replace the concrete with something that was more attractive and more age-appropriate for the house. I had a couple masons come out and quote, but after meeting Carl, there was no question who we would hire. The other masons looked at the images I?d collected and said, ?Sure, we can do that.? Carl looked at the images and said, ?Sure, we can do that. But here?s how we can make it better?? He took every idea we had and elevated it. My husband and I love working with contractors who are really, REALLY picky about their work, and Carl is exactly that. When he looked at our stone foundation, he told me with some concern that he probably wouldn?t be able to match the stone exactly because the house is so old, but that he would try his best to find an exact match. To be honest, I never expected ANY mason we hired to match the stone. That attention to detail surpassed even our pickiness (and we're pretty picky about our house). Because of weather, the job started much later than we?d anticipated (September instead of June), but Carl was very good about calling us and letting us know where we were on his schedule. And once they started, they never stopped. We had a few more days of torrential rain, and they worked through all but the worst of it. Once they were done the repointing, they started on the steps and the expertise Carl and his crew brought to the job really became apparent. They spent days building the forms for the concrete base of the steps and side walls ? measuring, adjusting, and making sure everything was level and spaced correctly. We ended up with one more step than we?d started with because Carl adjusted the riser height from the original 8? to a more user-friendly 7?. We would have never thought to ASK him to do that, but every time I walk up the steps with groceries (or down the steps in heels), I?m glad he did it! (The day they poured the concrete I walked out and jokingly said, ?Oh, can we do one less step? I don?t want that many.? This was after days of preparation. And here?s the thing: without even thinking twice, he says, ?Sure, we can do that.? And he was serious!) We love every bit of work that Artistic Masonry did on our house. The wait was absolutely worth it and we would not hesitate to call them again. I would advise other Angie?s List members: This is not the company you call for a comparison quote; this is the company you call if you want the job done right. Although I think Carl and his crew can do any kind of masonry work you need ? repointing, basement parging, sidewalks, etc. ? I think where they really excel is in the work that requires some creativity. In that regard, Artistic Masonry lives up to its name.

They are incredibly honest. They are responsible about calling when they have to reschedule because of the weather. They were half the price of another estimate, which was supposed to be the best. I wouldn't even know if there is a repair. They are unbelievable. They tinted the motor, so that it will match the motor in our older home. When I came home from work, the owner came up and said he is not putting something in, so it would be $50-$60 less. I can recommend them. People need to wait to get them. They are highly in demand. It is a small business.

Overall, Carl was wonderful to work with and very professional. I would highly recommend Carl for any type masonry work to be done. He will work with you until you are happy with the finished product.
Description of Work: Carl built a stone wall along my driveway, cut out part of the lawn to extend the walking space and built a raised garden bed using J.P.Henry stone. This is what he was hired for. Not only did he do that, but he removed an old air conditioner from a wall and dry walled the wall and sealed it. He was not hired to do this, but did it anyway.

My comments will echo everyone else's, so I'll just bullet-point them: Carl is professional. Once he's ready to take on your job (and it might be awhile - he's busy!), he stays in constant contact with you by phone to let you know when they are starting, what the day's work will entail, and how many more days he thinks the job will require. Carl shows attention to detail. He walked around with me before starting the job and had me indicate the places I wanted spot-pointing done (which we had done at the estimate, but that was 10 months earlier). He looked for any additional places to make sure that the job would be done thoroughly. Carl and his crew take care of your property to the best of their ability. Repointing is a messy task, but Carl and his crew asked me where I would like them to store their tools and materials, and they laid down tarps to protect the ground under the wall as much as possible. They had to move a stepping-stone to set their scaffold, and they replaced it perfectly when they cleaned up. They took as much care as they could when working around the many plants we have around our house. Carl is responsive to his client's needs. When they were running behind schedule, Carl asked whether he could do work on a Saturday at our house. When the work was much louder than I had expected, I asked Carl to send his men home for the day. Carl was understandably unhappy, but he didn't show his annoyance to me and agreed to end work for the day. Then Bob, one of his crew, helped me understand how much longer the noise would go on, and I ended up just taking a walk until that part of the work was over. I appreciated his willingness to work with me. Carl's price was in line with other estimates I received. Considering the amount of time they spent working at our house (6 full days) and the quality of the work they did, I think his fee was more than reasonable. He also gave us $200 off for being Angie's list members. Bob mentioned that the side of the house they spot-pointed will probably need full repointing in a few years. I would certainly hire Carl again. Maybe I should try to get on his 2015 schedule now!
Description of Work: Grinding out and repointing of all brickwork on one side of a 1940s colonial, including chimney area. Grinding out and spot-pointing of brickwork on another side. Chipping out old mortar and repointing around stone foundation. Spot-pointing of garage interior.

Visited with Carl, owner of Artistic Masonry in December 2010. Showed him the area that was leaking/wet on my third floor and explained the frequency of the water exposure. He examined the exterior wall and suggested two options for a partial patch and replacement of bricks OR a complete overhaul, repointing the entire wall. I selected the latter option and he forewarned me that it would be several months out before they could begin work due to weather, obtaining permits and prior commitments. Perhaps it was his forthright nature, but I instinctively knew Artistic Masonry would do a good job. I was right! The entire team (Carl, Bob, Dennis et al) are professional, meticulous and simply put, gentlemen. They were challenged by a difficult neighbor while completing the work at my home and handled the situation with a straightforwardness and grace that was beyond commendable. Each day the team arrived on time, laid out tarps to protect my home, methodically worked on the project and cleaned & organized the work-space before they left for the evening. They made every effort to explain any questions/concerns and provide daily updates on the state of the project. And, they worked continuously until the project was completed. On the last day, they returned to fully clean and wash down the work space. I have great appreciation for this type of attention to detail. Highly recommend the work of Artistic Masonry. Very good experience.

Carl and his men were thoroughly professional from start of job to finish. He and his foreman Bob were very knowledgeable and straightforward about all aspects of the work. We thought after the removal of the permastone the bricks would be in bad shape and it would be necessary to stucco; when it was removed, Carl called me at work and happily informed the brick could be saved. It's obvious he likes to save the brick whenever possible and takes great pride in his work as do all his guys. The pointing was done beautifully, the limestone sills were a good suggestion from him as was the suggestion for the slate steps. Carl called me at work at the end of everyday to keep me informed of the progress and all work was performed as promised and on time. The star bolts were installed through the second floor bedroom with practically no damage to the floors. I recommend Artistic Masonry to anyone thinking of having masonry work done. I had to wait about six months from the time I first had him in to see the job but it was well worth the wait for such a good result. I never had to call him back; as soon a a space opened he called and we got started within days. My neighbors also were very impressed with their work, their cleanliness and their concern for the neighbors houses; I've had many compliments on the work and requests for Carl's business card. A definite "A" job. I couldn't be more pleased.

Carl and his team were wonderful to work with. They were professional, courteous and explained what they were doing at every step. We even were told in the end how to preserve our wonderful new steps. I can highly recommend this company. If we have any masonry work done in the future, it will be with this company.
Description of Work: We have a 100 year old house. The outside stairs were part concrete part flagstone. The concrete was cracked and the flagstone was coming loose. Carl (the owner) explained what needed to be done, gave us several options depending on how much money we wanted to spend and how we wanted it to look. We went with the most elaborate option and it was absolutely worth it. They destroyed the old concrete area, removed the old flagstone and poured new steps. In the next step they put down new flagstone. Now all steps are covered with flagstone including the front edges and sides of the steps and it looks simply wonderful. We had interviewed various masons over the years and none had given us a satisfactory answer to how to redo our steps, Carl was the first one who had answers to all our questions. The work they did absolutely improved the curb appeal of our house.

He was very good. It took a long time for him to get to me because it was a small job. He told me that it would be a while, but it took longer. But when he did the work, it was excellent. I got quotes from some other people and he was the most reasonable. He is very nice to work with. He did what he said he would do. I had mud and trees that I wanted to get rid of. I did landscape about 12 years ago and it wasn?t working, everything was dying. He got rid of all the mud and other things. He was very punctual and professional.

This job went great from start to finish. He came when he said he would and he did an absolutely beautiful job.
Description of Work: Mr. Yockey of Artistic Masonry removed bricks from the wall of my house which was cracked in many places. he then put in new bricks, using tinted mortar so that the color of the mortor fits in with the old mortar next to the repair job. The brick fit in perfectly and one would hardly notice the fairly large patch job when walking by. He also pointed some cracks above the garage doors - again using tinted mortar. Mr. Yockey was incredibly neat in his work. He had to postpone his work a couple of times due to weather conditions and he called giving me plenty of notice that he would not be coming because of the obvious weather impairment. The job looks great and he is honest. He gave me only a verbal estimate and he charged me exactly what he said it would be. I would recommend him for any job he says he could do.

Our experience with Artistic Masonry was excellent, and the finished product is more beautiful than we could have ever imagined. Carl and his team are professional, punctual, hardworking, talented, and kind. From the moment Carl stopped by last fall to discuss the project, I knew he was the right choice for us. He listened to what we needed and wanted, which was a walkway that would help people navigate the steep and awkward terrain out of our back door, and also something that would be attractive but not ridiculously expensive. My husband and I are thrilled with the quality and beauty of our new walkway. The design and its implementation surpassed our expectations. For example, the layout of the flagstone veneer on the landings, is gorgeous, unique, and truly artistic. Equally as important, our children will now be safe when they go out of our back door. Finally, you couldn't ask for a more pleasant group of guys in Carl, Lamont, Bob, and Dennis. They're always on time, and they do not leave until they've finished what they want to accomplish for that day. They pay attention to detail, answer any and all questions, and their work simply speaks for itself. Amazing!

The old stone foundation walls had not been refinished since the house was built, and the last owner had put up so many interior walls and rooms that light could not penetrate from one side to the other. Water trickled in a steady stream along the south wall, and there were three areas that puddled during steady rain. Nothing could be stored safely. Starting a day earlier than he originally planned, Carl and his team stripped away the interior walls and wooden flooring. They scraped away the loose mortar, reparged the walls and sealed them. I do not understand how the men managed to reach some of the places that they parged and sealed. The basement is transformed. We can only describe the change by using the word miracle: the walls are coated with solid concrete; the room is huge and bright. And dry. Two tiny areas get slightly damp after intense rainstorms. Carl told us that might happen. He told us everything in detail, but I had no idea that the reality was going to be so stunning.

Once Carl and crew implemented the new technology to remove the globbed on unsightly work done by Baldwin nightmare crew job progressed beyond our expectations. Crew attention to details uncovered additional issues and allowed me to review the problems and how they would suggest the work be completed to assure my total satisfaction. Carl follow up and assistance with clear, concise description of his findings, remedial actions and documented before and after pictures resulted in 100% award by independent arbitration panel and satisfaction that Baldwin disregard for responsibility, record that includes enough dissatisfied clients that he brags openly that he is judgment proof, has been placed on the public record. Carl and his company are worthy of the trust and respect we must place in the contractors we hire. Pleasure to pass on unqualified endorsment to anyone who he suggest contact me.
Description of Work: Called Carl to help undo botched repairs by another contractor. From day one Carl arrived to inspect and estimate the project knew he was exceptional individual that wanted to help rectify a mess but not point fingers or bad mouth another individual or company. He focused on helping me understand what my options would be considering existing technology and roadblocks to reverse the damage I to the appearance of the house. The house is distictive exterior stone with non traditional pointing. End result of Carl true concern and dedication to satisfy my desire to restore the finish is above and beyond search for a new product that he though might enable reversing slopped on cement finish, enabling his terrific crew the option to saving the original stone and brick face I had given up on ever achieving. Thanks to Carl and his crew the exterior looks better than ever and assure anyone looking for best possible workmanship and true value by all means hire this company

The wall, patio, and steps leading up to the yard are all beautiful. The quality of the work is excellent, and everyone at Artistic Masonry was professional and easy to work with. It was a big project, and they completed it in the time they said and at the price they quoted. Carl Yockey kept us informed on various details throughout the process and confirmed decisions with us before proceeding. We are extremely happy with the work and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Artistic Masonry built a retaining wall around the perimeter of our backyard, filled the yard up to one even level, and built a flagstone patio at the back of the house. The retaining wall is 8-inch cinder block, about 2 feet high, filled with concrete, with a capstone on top. The steps are concrete with capstones on top and flagstones on the risers, and the patio is variable-sized flagstone.

Artistic Masonry was incredible! We called them after reading the amazing reviews on Angies List. Carl Yockey got back to us right away, and unlike other contractors that looked at the project, Carl seemed very familiar with the stone construction from the period, and provided good practical perspective. Where other bidders nearly claimed the portico was days from from falling over and needed more than $30,000 in repairs, Carl felt the problem was just in the tiles and grout, and the underlying structure was sound. He clearly stated his assumptions, and would let us know if the concrete structure would need further repairs after they lifted the stone floor. His bid was $5,800. In addition to the $30,000 bid, we recieved bids for $12,000 and $15,000. As other reviews noted, the worse part of hiring Artistic is that they are booked months in advance. We accepted his bid in April, and he told us it would be late summer/early fall before they could start. It was well worth the wait. Carl was very involved in the project from the beginning. His crew was very courteous, and Carl made my wife (who interacted with him daily) feel very comfortable. Thankfully, the job turned out as he predicted, and he water-proofed the concrete and relaid the stones. He was on top of the details I was concerned about (slope of the floor and water run-off versus pooling) and fretted over details that were too small for me to notice. If you need stone or masonry work done, you have to talk to Carl Yockey at Artistic Masonry. But stand in line, my wife and I are already saving for our next project!
Description of Work: Artistic Masonry removed the original blue stone tiles from the concrete deck of our portico, resealed the cement floor and relaid the tiles. Our 1930's stone house has a stone portico extending from the front door across the driveway. Cars drive under the portico to reach the garage. A second floor door leads onto the top of the portico, which is a stone patio. Water began leaking through the floor of the patio and damaging the stucco ceiling of the portico. Artistic Masonry also re-pointed the stone columns that support the portico.

Though the job was started a month later than expected, the men showed up daily, were professional, and did their job in an efficient, but careful way. They seemed to be invested in what they were making and proud of the result. The wall is lovely and I would use Artistic Masonry again and recommend them to friends. Carl was on the job and got in touch with me daily for an update during the work.
Description of Work: Old stone rubble was removed and examined for reuse; a new 18 inch wide wall was built around the border of 2 sides of my driveway. It was built to my wishes that it look like a dry country wall, but contained cement within to give it the necessary integrity. They also sealed the cap stones on another part of a different wall.

I spent $8000 on that work. Carl is the proprietor and he is a great communicator. He was very punctual and meticulous in his work. He was also very responsive to things that I wanted done differently. I am going to use him again.
Description of Work: I used Artistic Masonry Co. in October of this year and they repaired and painted a three storey home, which was the whole exterior of the stucco and did some stucco painting.

Pleasant experience, from beginning to end. Carl had good suggestions and advice as to the design and materials, and found a new brick, at a reasonable price, that matched my old bricks perfectly. To save money, he salvaged as many old bricks as he could from the old sidewalk, and mixed them in. He put up with my design ideas and changes, but wasn't afraid to tell me when my ideas didn't make sense. He suggested other ideas. The result of the give and take was a beautiful curved walk that I enjoy looking at every time I walk up it. I wish I have more brick work or stone work projects around here so I could hire him again. Price was good too, compared to other bids. I had a few other hardscaping guys look at the job, and Carl won my trust across the board even before he started. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Tore out an old sidewalk and installed a new brick sidewalk that leads from our driveway to the front stoop of an historic, old farmhouse.
