We realized on a cold evening in September that our heat was not working. We called the company that provides our oil and they sent someone who was less than desirable. He did notify us that we needed to have our chimney "swept." We called J & L and Jim came out the following Saturday to see what needed to be done. He was very kind and thoughtful and obviosuly knowledgable. Our baby was sleeping in the living room and he made sure to be as quiet as possible. He spent over an hour at our house and gave us a quote for the work that needed to be done prior to leaving. We called him the following Monday and said we wanted to go ahead with his recommendations. He said he was booked until the third week of October but that he would try and juggle some clients because he understood that we had a baby and were definitely in need! He and his son-in-law came the following Saturday and spent about three hours working. After which we settled up and the price was true to the quote. I can not say enough nice things about both Jim and Lou! We will definitely work with them again!

They were extremely thorough, clean, caring,and hard working. I was told by a previous sweep, that one of my fireplaces should not be used because the flue didn't open completely and the chimney was not to code. I didn't use that fireplace for 3 years. Jim and Lou said the chimney was to code and a damaged screw was the reason the flue would not completely open. They replaced the screw for free and the fireplace now works great. I felt that they really care about doing an excellent job and wanted to please me. They want my business now and in the future.

J&L Chimney & Services was very good and very thorough. He's knowledgeable. We will be using him again. They were very professional and very knowledgeable. He commented on how well the chimney was built. They did a nice job. He gave me pointers on how to care for it.

They were very good. They told me what needed to be done and told me what could be put off until later. I thought they were very good and fair. What stood out about my experience with them is just that they were very cost conscious. They were willing to let me know totally what it was. There were no surprises. They were excellent. I have called other people and they were very good price wise. I plan to have them do more work in the future.

Linked up with J&L Chimney and Services via Home Advisor. Jim called me within 15 minutes of submitting a request. I explained what was going on over the phone. and we agreed on a service call for Saturday, 9 Feb at 9 AM. During the call Jim asked if I had the owners manual in hand (which I did) as this would avoid the need for him finding and downloading one himself. At first I thought this a bit odd since I have not seen techs actually refer to manuals on many occasions. More on this later. Jim arrived on the dot and placed booties over his shoes before entering our home - a much appreciated gesture. Our dog appeared to accept Jim at once and did not bark once during the service call - this was notable since we have had to crate the dog while other techs are in the house. To start off Jim took a good look at the unit and covered our carpet with a tarp to keep the area he was working in as clean as possible.. Then he looked through the manual to follow the steps outlined for removing the grills, glass, shutting down the pilot and locating the culprit high limit switch. During this period Jim pointed out minor problems due to previous owner actions - stripped screws, hacked off screw heads, etc. Upon locating and dismounting the high limit switch, he attempted to reset it per the manual. This was not possible since the switch did not include a reset button nor is there any easy way to confirm its functionality. He also provided a plausible explanation as to why he did stock such parts in his truck, but did show how to obtain a replacement part if the situation persisted. He then vacuumed the lower portion of the unit, restarted the pilot and reinstalled the glass and grills following the manual inch case. This was quite educational for me - next time I will have the confidence to take on the job myself to include refitting a new high limit switch. if that is truly needed. After collecting his tools and matt, he went out side to inspect the external vent. At this point it is still not clear whether there truly is a problem with the unit, but now I know what to do to correct it. And the education I received during the 75 minute service call was well worth the fee. As I said, I used Home Advisor to arrange this service - but since J&L Chimney and Services is an Angie's List service provider as well, submitting a review there seemed appropriate.

While researching for information on gas fireplace inserts and what's involved with going into such a venture, I happened to call J&L Chimney & Services which is listed here in Angies List. Jim offered expert advice on what is involved with the selection of a fireplace. He gave suggestions on what questions to ask when going to dealer, and even offered visit my home before doing so. Although no services were performed, his willingness to help and offer advice deserve special recognition.

We contacted J&L (jim Clark) on New Years Eve when we experienced difficulties with operating our fireplace insert. They immediately scheduled a visit for New Years Day and arrived promptly that day. Jim diagnosed the problems (many cracks in chimney wall, blockage of flue, need for extensive cleaning and a liner.) He showed us samples of expanded creosote present in our chimney and confirmed that there had been chimney fires in the past. While giving us a "ballpark" figure for the job, he returned with a contract and details about the job. He used video survellance to locate chimney cracks etc , took measurements and thoroughly cleaned the chimney. On his third visit he completed the job, cleaned up thoroughly, left warranty card and gave instructions about fireplace insert use. He also gave advice about possibly filing a claim with our insurance company, including supporting documents and a promise to further help with the process if needed. At all times, Jim and co-workers were pleasant, promt and professional. Although we've never had this kind of work before, the price seemed fair and included a senior discount.
