Jed and partner did an excellent job from start to finish, including clean up. During the siding replacement a heavy rain storm and high winds came up but they waited it out and finished the job by end of day. Both projects were completed on time and look like new.
Description of Work: Instead of having to replace a three section door/window wall that I had received prior quotes for over $7,000.00, Jed was able to replace framing and trim that had been damaged for $500. Also, he and partner replaced a section of siding that had blown off of a 3 story house during high winds.

Jed and his co workers were prompt, professional and courteous. They showed up on time and were very hardworking. I was very pleased with the quality of their work, especially the deck, which was not just "power washed", but hand scrubbed. They were also very knowledgeable and informative.
Description of Work: We had two separate jobs done. Job 1 was a variety of home repairs including repairing/ replacing exterior door trim around garage and patio doors, repairing/replacing drywall in garage, painting all exterior doors and door trim, installing new lock set on front door, replacing light fixtures, repairing roof, and other miscellaneous jobs. Job 2 was cleaning and staining deck.

We purchased the Big Deal of 40 hours of general contractor work from Bell Valley through the Angie's list. This consisted of two 10 hour days of Jed and Rob reframing the master bath that I had already gutted for an installation of a 4-piece fiberglass shower unit. They put in an overhead light and fan and ran the vent line out to the soffit. They also hung the drywall in the bathroom. Jed and Rob were professional, personable, and very courteous and we are extremely satisfied with quality and quantity work completed. I was most impressed with Jed?s honesty. As it turned out, Jed and Rob arrived late the first day due to an accident and traffic problems they encountered while traveling to Harrisburg. When I thanked Jed after they completed their work on the second day, Jed was quick to remind me that he owed me two more hours of work and that they would return to install the shower door when I am ready to have it put in. If you are looking for a friendly, honest and knowledgeable contractor at reasonable price, you will not be disappointed with Jed and Bell Valley Contractors.

It went fabulously!!!!! Jed and Bob replaced an old 1960's PINK ceramic tile floor. (Just to complete the picture...the walls are sea foam green tile). The tile was well attached to the subfloor and it took much effort to get up every last pink tile. They repaired the subfloor, laid the new tile and grouted like the experts they are. The final floor is white ceramic with light green glass inserts. It looks fabulous. Check out the Bell Valley website for before and after pictures. The experience was fun and educational - I now know what an outside corner is. I am very pleased with the result.

I was unable to use the big deal due to scheduling issues on both ends. I had taken off work for two days to accomodate the service. The company was suppose to come today to start the service. They were suppose to be here at 8 a.m. At 8:40 I received an email saying they would not be making the appointment today. Naturally I'm frustrated.

Response from Bell Valley Contractors
The member purchased the deal May 3rd and chose to schedule her appointment for August 16th. We held this date for her- turning away other clients- she called a week prior to get appointment and needed to reschedule. We were accommodating, friendly and courteous with the member and rescheduled for August 29th. We had another matter about a week prior to her new appointment and I kindly asked a week in advance if we could reschedule- The member said she could not and said at this point she would want a refund and hire another contractor. I told her we would keep her appointment and tried as hard as I could to make the appointment work for everyone. It was scheduled until a last minute issues arose, causing me to cancel her appointment that very morning. This is just a timeline of events, take from it what you will. Overall we were very accommodating and tried to reschedule this member.

Completely satisfied of all work that was performed.
Description of Work: Bell Valley Contractors worked on the entrance to the house, our front door, and storm door. The house is approaching 70 years old. The entrance to the house had water damage caused by water pooling at the base of the wooden entrance. This resulted in rotting of the ground level wood. The wood was replaced with PVC "wood." The storm door suffered wood rot as well. The portion of the storm door that suffered from the rot was removed and replaced. The storm door received multiple coats of paint for protection. To complete the job, the entire entrance was repainted. This was an extra step that impressed us. It renewed the entire front so that the storm door didn't stick out as having been "refreshed." Finally, the front door was stuck as a result of the settling of the 70 year old house. The door was sanded and it now opens freely. And...because Jeb saw that the house's powder room door was not properly latching, he fixed it. He did so of his volition, and we appreciated it!

Jed did a great job at getting some of my long overdue garage racks put up for me. He also had time to install a washer/dryer cabinet that I had purchased. Great worker and the communication back and forth with setting up the appointment was very prompt and responsive. Great to have a handyman contractor that can be trusted. May use them again to install hardwood flooring in the future. I was very satisfied. It took several re-schedules to get an available date, but we made it work on both ends.

They arrived a bit early, worked all day, seemingly without a lunch break, came back the next couple of days. They were extremely accurate and efficient, did a good overall job. I had him come back to do another job as soon as he was able (electrical work replacing some switches and installing GFI plugs in the kitchen, plus painted 3 basement walls with Dry Lock after scraping them down. Jed was honest, efficient and did great work. We will be using him as our regular contractor from now on.

There was several complications that arose from this seemingly easy project. The door way was a standard size but the townhouse had a special order door. The floor had rotted under the floor board which wasnt visible until he removed the old door frame. He showed me the damage and reviewed my options with me. He cleaned the area and placed new plywood for the fix. The installment took time because he had to rig the door frame and even it out given that it had been a special order door that had previously been there. The project hit so many complications but he completed it and the final product looked fabulous. One would have never known all the jigging he had to do to make it look completed. I had no idea until the end that he was the owner since he was so humble. I would definitely hire him again and have him complete my major projects in my home.

Jed and his partner were punctual, professional and very efficient and did a Wonderful carpentry job replacing the old stairway in our home. It is now safe and sound. This was not an easy task because the stairway curves at the bottom and the stair steps look like pie wedges, and Jed was able to put it all together, even replacing the original first step landing at the bottom, [which was awkward because the tread board was so narrow], with a more functional and safe first step landing. We had purchased the materials previously for this project, and my husband had started repairs on the stairwell walls. Due to recent health issues, my husband was not able to do the stairs. Jed and his helper were very kind and respectful of his/our situation regarding this. We've already contacted Bell Valley for our next project. We highly recommend them.

Great! Jed and his team successfully installed an entryway light. We have 25 foot high ceilings, so it involved a complete set up and take down of full scaffolding in a confined area. They did a great job, were very kind to our entire family, and professional and worked with diligence. Would definitely like to see them again for future business.

The job went just fine--the guys were very courteous and personable, did a good job, and worked efficiently. The reason I did not give a higher grade is because of the fact that the Big Deal worked out to not be as good as it was advertised. Based on information from the contractor, it sounds like Big Deals are not so great, just an advertisement, really. And as such the contractor has to pay AL in order to be able to offer the "deal" so not surprising that, based on my own experience and other reviews I have read, the contractor seems to find a way to charge what works out to be a pretty typical price for whatever service they have offered. At least in my experience this contractor actually did a reasonable amount of work for the money, even if it did not work out to be nearly as big a discount as advertised. I also found it off-putting that when I pointed this out I was told that they had no control over the wording of the ad. That seems like an issue, both for contractor and for AL.

Response from Bell Valley Contractors
The member was not happy with the "Big Deal". We do not set our deals (pricing, time-frame, etc) on Angie's List, we are offered various "deals" in different categories and are guided on which ones to run. Yes, the deal would have been for one person, however we would not have been able to move your radiators with one person. We have the option to use 2 people for 4 hours, instead of 1 for 8 hours to be more efficient and complete the most pressing tasks. The member did not feel the "Deal" was that much savings because Jed quoted her a discounted price we offer for Angie's List Big Deal Buyers - NOT OUR REGULAR EVERYDAY PRICE "We offer this rate to customers who have bought the same deal as you or something similar IF they would like us to continue and complete more tasks/projects" The member was fully aware via our extensive e-mail conversations that it would take 2 men for 4 hours a piece, due to the fact that the DEAL was for 8 hours of LABOR. She was fine with this beforehand and issues arose after the fact. I was upset the member did not find the Deal to be all that great, but very happy that she liked our work and was satisfied with the tasks we performed. Angie's List, in essence, could be called a matchmaking service for consumers and businesses. Consumers review and decide to hire a contractor through a Big Deal, this ensures a proper "try it and buy it" period without having to hire somebody off the street and then be bound to someone they regret hiring. We do not pay Angie's List to provide Big Deals, my exact quote was that "we get a fraction of what the big deal costs". In Closing, This is a great example of why consumers should always ask questions beforehand and read the fine print. I am happy to immediately respond to any questions about a Big Deal, I have had many members reach out before actually purchasing one.

Jed (with an assistant ) were punctual, friendly and gracious. Jed worked beyond the 40-hour limit in order to finish the job and even came back to install the damaged siding. It is also easy to communicate with him; I have called him in the evenings and he picks up the phone, a breath of fresh air knowing your questions are answered before seeing him to do the work the next day. If you have issues with missed areas in his painting, Jed will graciously re do it to your satisfaction. I will not hesitate to get Jed for the next job in my house. Jed became our friend and he even recommended a property for sale near his house. I highly recommend Jed to do your next house work, you will undoubtedly be happy of his performance.

They did wonderful jobs on all of it, and they were very FAST on the carpentry. We had bought the 40 hour deal, and they approached it planning on two ten hour days with two people. I actually think they ended up spending more than 40 hours on us, since they took some of the work back to their shop, but I'm not sure. Everything looks professional and is very functional. We have some larger projects coming up that we will probably use them for as well; they had great ideas for how to renovate our basement. We also had our kids milling about at points-- they were very curious about what was going on-- and the guys were kind and conscientious with them. I definitely had the clear feeling that they wanted to do a good job for us and cared about our house being functional for our family. I recommend them very highly.
Description of Work: We purchased 40 hours of handyman work from Bell Valley through the Angie's list Big Deal. They did a lot of things for us, much of it carpentry work related to our installation of more insulation and a new heating/cooling system last year. They boxed in some air conditioning ducts, cut down some closet doors that needed to be smaller because of the ductwork, added a door to a crawl space access that had been cut to add insulation. They also worked on our old 1940s windows-- stripping the old paint, adding new glass as necessary, new caulking, new paint.

Jed and his team arrived at our home on time and would discuss exactly what they would be doing that day. They removed the ugly paneling and put up new drywall and finished the walls. They also put a new ceramic tile floor over the concrete floor. We were thrilled with our new basement/ rec room coming together and Jed was very professional and understood that we wanted to finish the room ourselves.

That night I went down at 8:30 pm with my husband to check out the work Jed did. We were horrified to see that the spaces between the tiles were not lined up in a straight line! The grout lines were not evenly spaced and did not form straight lines from left to right, up and down across the 300 sq feet of basement that they completed. There were also a few tiles that were popped up and were not even level with the rest of the tiles around them. We found their red chalk line where they squared the room and they didn't line tile up with even their chalk line. The area where they started wasn't too bad, but as they continued through the room, their tile became more out of alignment. I contacted a neighbor who knew of a professional tile contractor, who agreed to immediately come out that night. This tile professional agreed with our concerns and spent half an hour measuring the room, tiles and grout lines. He was able to find the exact area where Jed and his employee went wrong. His professional opinion confirmed that our concerns were very legitimate. I left a message for Jed to call me the next morning. When he called, I asked what was going on in the basement. Jed stated that I was picking out all of the little imperfections. He said that I needed to wait until he grouted, because the grout would hide all of the imperfections and the floor would look beautiful. I disagreed and expressed concern that the grout lines were NOT even or straight and severely misaligned. He then asked me when was the last time I laid a ceramic tile floor? I asked him if grout lines should be straight in all directions and evenly spaced and he said yes! I then told him that we got a professional tile contractor out here the night before to evaluate the work. I shared the evaluation with Jed. Jed then stated that at this point he wanted to break the contract, refund our money, and walk away from our job. I told Jed we would allow him to break the contract, but he would be responsible for giving us our full refund of $1499, but he would also be paying us for the ruined tile & cement he already used, plus he had to pay for a new tile contractor to remove the flooring he laid and dispose of it. Jed said he would speak to his wife and Angie's LIst and he would call me back. Within the hour Jed called me back stating that he had contacted his lawyer. He said he would not refund any of our money, his lawyer would contact me, and his employee would be over that night to retrieve his equipment. There was never any talk of Jed redoing the tile job because he said he wanted to walk away. If Jed was capable of putting in a professionally laid ceramic tile floor, he would have done it the first time. The fact that the flooring looks so bad confirms he is not skilled at putting in a ceramic tile floor. Bell Valley Contractors broke the contract when they failed to professionally & correctly install 300 sq feet of ceramic tile, as they stated they would in our contract. Angie's List has since refunded us their portion of the Big Deal (35%) that was paid to them, as well as a full refund from Bell Valleys bank. From Bell Valley Contractors website: - FINALLY - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. There have been so many clients who have had shoddy work to save a few hundred dollars, only to have Bell Valley come in, redo the work and the customer ends up paying - all over again. "Do It Right the First Time" - we mean it! They clearly don't mean it, as evidenced by our basement. We have filed complaints with the Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau and will continue to pursue this legally until this company is held responsible for their actions. I've posted photos below and here is a link to one of the videos of their work in our home. These speak louder than any words can say: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LHPWgDw1XXQ UPDATE 11/23/2013 We filed a case with the American Arbitration Assoc. as required from our contract AND because the Steiners stated that we were required by the contract to do so. After we paid the $775 to file the case, the Steiners decided they weren't going to follow the contract and they refused to participate in arbitration! And because they dragged their feet, we lost 75% of our filing fee! We were left with no other choice but to sue civilly in our local court. Our case was heard yesterday and as expected, we won our court case and were awarded all of the money we asked for. The Steiners sole defense was that while the tile job did look terrible, they said it was due to us walking on the tile while the cement was still wet. The video clearly shows their defense is absurd & laughable. On a side note, we also brought to court all of the equipment they left at our home and refused to pick up for the last 6 months. We are glad to be done with this nightmare. Any company that puts clients through this nightmare should not only not be allowed to advertise on Angie's List, they should not be allowed to participate on this site. Buyer beware if seeking tile work by this company! Video: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LHPWgDw1XXQ
Description of Work: ***UPDATE March 31, 2014*** We had our day in court against Bell Valley Contractors. The Judge reviewed the variety of proof we gave against Bell Valley Contractors, and along with Jed's admission to the poor ceramic tile job he performed, the Judge awarded the court case to us. The Judge awarded us every dime we had sued for as well. It has been 4 months since our court date and Bell Valley Contractors and Jed & Kelly Steiner have made no attempt to pay the judgement ordered by the court. Due to this, their business & personal credit reports now show the judgement against them. Know who you are hiring...Read EVERY review written on this site, contact the BBB, check credit reports, etc. Our family continues to suffer the financial hardships because of this couple & their business. They lie when they say they will 'make it right'. They don't care. Period. Our experience is proof. ********************************************************************* We hired Bell Valley Contractors to ceramic tile all 740 sq feet of our basement. We provided all needed supplies and only needed Bell Valley Contractors for the labor. We purchased the "Big Deal" for $1499 which paid for 40 hours labor. We made an appointment for Jed to evaluate two large jobs we needed done here at our home. We decided to hire Bell Valley Contractors for the basement flooring after receiving Jed's estimate of $3350. Jed was to install about 740 sq feet of ceramic tile. We were responsible for purchasing tile glue, grout and ceramic tile. We were to empty the basement, sweep and vacuum the floor so Jed would be able to immediately begin work without any prep needed. We scheduled a start date of May 20, 2013 and it was to be a 3 day job, set for completion on May 23, 2013. There was minor miscommunication regarding tile size. Initially we thought it would be 18" tile for installation, however at the time Jed evaluated the job, he said there really isn't a price difference whether we got 12" or 18" tile. When we did have to buy the 12" tile, Jed called to say he needed to add on $200 to our estimate because it would take twice as much work to install 12" tile than it would if it was 18" tile. When I reminded him of his statement about there being no price difference between the two sizes, he decided not to charge the additional $200. I asked him it would take twice as long, when would the new completion date be. He said he could still get it done in 3 days, it would just take 2 extra hours per day for those 3 days. (Obviously contradicting his own statement that it would take 'twice as long'). The night before, Jed's wife Kelly called to confirm Jed would be coming in the morning. I told her yes, he said he would be here from 7am-7pm and she agreed. The next morning Jed and his employee didn't show up until 8am. They got started right away in the basement. I checked in a few times to see if they needed anything and they assured me that they were not having any problems, and no issues arose. Everything was going as planned. They worked until 6pm, cleaned up and left by 6:20pm. Jed told me I needed to buy 121 more tiles and said that they would be back at 7am the next morning.

In response: Miscommunication of Tile Size - The client was buying the tile, she wanted 18 inch tile, but could not find the tile she wanted, so she settled for 12 inch tile. She called to ask how many tile she would need with the new size. Double Workload- Jed did not say it would be twice the work - Yes there are more tiles to lay with 12 inch tile than 18 inch tile Twice the Time to complete the Work - Jed added 2 hours to a regular 8 hour day so he could conform to the Angie's List deal of 40 hours. 2 contractors + 10 hours per contractor + 2 days = 40 hours. Calling to Confirm - [Member's name removed] did call to confirm, there was never any mention of working a 12 hour day or arriving at 7:00am. We start our day at 8:00am. Checking the Work after Bell Valley left - The client did check several times on the contractors and proceeded to tap the tiles with her feet, after being informed that they needed to be left untouched for 24 hours to dry - this was during active laying of tile. Pictures of Tile - The photos were of the same 4 tiles for all 11 pictures. The first 4 pictures showing laid tile with no grout, the next set of 7 pictures were the same tile with grout. We had only laid half the tile in the basement and no grouting had been done. Breaking the Contract - The client did not "allow" us to break the contract - The breach wasn't for NOT letting us fix the alleged problem - it was in breach because she hired another contractor overnight and refused to let us finish the job. The client called us yesterday evening, Monday May 20, 2013 at 10:24 pm and left a message telling Jed to not come up today, Tuesday May 21, 2013 due to an emergency she had to take care of and that she would be contacting us May 21, 2013 in the evening to resume work on Wednesday May 22, 2013. I returned her call Tuesday morning, May 21,2013 and left a message. She then called and wanted to speak with Jed who was unavailable and who later called her back within an hour. She informed Jed that she had a contractor come in Monday evening at 10:00pm (May 20, 2013) and that he gave give her an estimate for the tile job in her basement and that she already had him set-up to start the tile - a project we had started and still had 2 days to finish. She stated that she had contacted Angie's List and requested a refund of the Big Deal she had purchased and that she was demanding that we pay for her materials from a contracted job that wasn't even finished. I immediately contacted Angie's List to see what exactly was going on and they said there was not any record of her calling in or requesting any refund, via phone, their website or e-mail. As for the deal she purchased, a refund will be DIRECTLY received from Angie's List per their guidelines. We have informed the client, that we would prefer to meet in a public place to pick up the "handful" of items at her home and she has refused. Judging an incomplete project, especially after ONE day, does in no way predict what the finished product would look like, especially from a non-professional stance. We have many happy customers, on Angie's List and off. We also have before and after pictures of tile projects we have completed, with delighted customers. On May 31, 2013, I was notified of a new or edited review and I have decided to respond to [Member's name removed] - [Member's name removed] has not emailed any new pictures or videos regarding the tile since Tuesday May 21, 2013. I would like to note that the pictures she sent me and the ones she posted below are VERY different. I would also like to note that I did send [Member's name removed] pictures of our tile jobs and said that they clearly show we ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE of laying tile. Furthermore, we are more than well aware of her disabilities and there is no reason her husband could not have met us for pick-up. Regarding the items left there, [Member's name removed] forgot the 2 DeWalt batteries - $90/piece and the DeWalt radio ($190) that are STILL at her home along with various other items. This is the second time [Member's name removed] wanted to use her Angie's List deal for a project at her home and then decided to incorporate her neighbor to do it. I feel that [Member's name removed] should have chosen the person she wanted to perform her work beforehand and this could have been avoided. Please look at our gallery to view pictures of our tile work, as well as, all our review from happy customers. We would do both to resolve this issue - deduct the remaining $750 (angie's list deal money) from her balance and then continue to forgive the balance owed of $1,750.00 for the contract. The member is clearly contradicting herself in her constant add-ons to her review. She asked us to not come back up to her home and stated she would let us know the following evening when to resume work. Then she states at the end of her latest rambling that we damaged her property and WALKED OFF THE JOB. WE DID NOT WALK OFF HER JOB, WE WERE TOLD VIA VOICE MAIL THAT SHE HAD A FAMILY EMERGENCY AND SHE WOULD CONTACT US THE FOLLOWING EVENING TO RESUME WORK! - ONLY TO HAVE HER START THIS RIDICULOUS CHARADE. SHE "DAMAGED" HER OWN PROPERTY BY HAVING SOMEONE ELSE PULL UP THE TILE AND CEMENT. THIS IS CLEARLY GETTING OUT OF HAND WITH THIS MEMBER. WE HAVE OFFERED TO FORGIVE THE BALANCE - INCLUDING THE TOOLS AND SHE SAYS THIS IS "LAUGHABLE AND WILL SEE US IN COURT" NO, SHE WILL NOT SEE US IN COURT - PER THE CONTRACT WE MUST GO THROUGH THE AAA or THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION. THE MEMBER HAS ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB BECAUSE ANGIE'S LIST WILL NOT REFUND HER - IRONIC THAT SHE FILED THAT DAY SHE FOUND OUT SHE WILL NOT BE GETTING ANY MONEY. We had a much greater "burden of proof", in retrospect, we did not properly document this Project with photos - the work before and DURING the Tile Installation. The member had photos of Tile that was damaged by them AFTER we left. Why did the member not contact us or simply communicate that she felt the Tile was not being properly laid - we could have simply ripped it up and started over. The reason she did not communicate and instead called this mystery contractor in (at 9:00pm that evening) was because the Tile was damaged by her - I would like to add that this contractor who allegedly confirmed the Tile was laid improperly DID NOT SHOW UP as her witness either. As for the AAA dispute, we followed the advice of the person handling the Arbitration - much to [member name removed] disapproval. She says we broke the contract by not following through with the AAA - Not True. This member broke the contract by refusing us access to complete the tile project - now we can all SEE why. WE HAVE DONE MANY TILE PROJECTS AND WE HAVE PHOTOS AND MEMBER REVIEWS - ON ANGIE'S LIST AND OFF - THAT PROVE WE CAN PROPERLY INSTALL TILE - NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. WE ARE HAPPY TO SUPPLY REFERENCES TO ANY POTENTIAL CLIENT ABOUT OUR WORK - INCLUDING PHOTOS TO PROVE OUR ABILITIES. We firmly believe that if we had photos of the tile laid that day, BEFORE the member destroyed it, this obviously would have never gotten this far. We are taking this with a "grain of salt" and have learned a lot from our errors of improper documentation.

Jed and his crew arrived promptly when they said they would to perform the work. Our original estimate was for labor only since we had already bought most of the supplies when my wife and I had contemplated doing this ourselves. Jed was kind enough to purchase the remaining supplies that we were not able to locate ourselves and add them to our total. The whole process went very smoothly and they cleaned up after themselves
Description of Work: We had a leak in our bathroom ceiling that ran down the wall and ruined the shower surround. We live in a mobile home and the tub for this bathroom was the cheapest of the cheap.... It was plastic and you could literally bounce on it... Needless to say we wanted it replaced as well as the shower surround and fix the leak in the roof

We had Jed remove our range hood and install a new over-the-range microwave in our kitchen. We had gotten the microwave around Christmas time and it sat unused for a couple months. Jed was quick to respond to our needs and performed the work in a timely and efficient manner, leaving our home spotless after the fact. The finished product looked great. We would definitely recommend Bell Valley Contractors to anyone looking for an affordable handyman.

All of the work was completed within the time he alloted and it was completed professionally and looked great. Jed was easy to work with and his estimates were very accurate and reasonable. I would highly recommend this contractor and I will definitely use again in the future for my own 'handyman' repairs and renovations.
Description of Work: I had Bell Valley Contractors help with some work that needed to be completed when I sold my home and also for the house inspection. Jed installed a ceiling fan in my bedroom, re-grouted the tile in my foyer, installed a chimney cap and repaired the wooden posts on my front porch for my home in New Freedom.
