Second Contact: Jed Steiner
Jed came back during the cooler weather to finish up some electrical work in our attic and bathroom that he and another worker had begun in the summer. My difficulty with Jed is that he has never submitted invoices for the last 3 jobs he had done here, from August through mid-October. We need the invoices for tax purposed, and I have repeatedly asked for them via email and in person and they have simply not been delivered. I will be switching to another general contractor.

Bought a daily deal through Angie's List and after several miscommunications, the work was completed on Sat., 9/6. After they left, we noticed they failed to replace some shingles that had blown off. My husband indicated to them that we had spare shingles that could be used. They indicated that the mansard part of the roof was difficult to keep shingles on. We agreed but didn't realize that they hadn't replaced some shingles on another area of the roof. It would have been an easy fix. My husband, being disabled is not able to do this type of work. They did give suggestions on some repairs to the chimney plus a minor adjustment to the roof fan.

These gentlemen were in and out at the proposed time. They cleaned up after themselves, answered a few additional questions about prospective jobs that I had. very satisfied with the workmanship. It was a little bit of a chore getting this job scheduled number one to have someone to come out to look at and measure the window was hard to coordinate due to the driving distance from their location to mine and my available hours. For install because it was a window we had to work around the elements when scheduling the actual job. Very convenient that they were able to install on a Saturday as the second option.

Response from Bell Valley Contractors
Bell Valley sends 2 roof specialists for every roof inspection requested. Upon both specialists inspecting the roof, there were cracks in the shingles every 3 Ft across the span of the roof. This was due to the absence of proper ventilation provided for the roof and the overall improper installation of the member's roof, as a whole. The member was given this information and Bell Valley did provide a free estimate for the member, per his request, on April 7, 2014.

Bell Valley was a pleasure to work with. They have become our go-to people for home repairs. In fact when Jed was in our house, he reset a powder room door that had a lock that failed to engage. We're now proud owners of a powder room door that actually locks. He did that at no charge.
Description of Work: We purchased Bell Valley's services on an Angie's list deal. Jed repaired our front door trim on site. He took our wooden storm door back to the shop for replacement of some of the wood and repainting. As a result of the work that he did on the front door, we had him back to the house to re-set and anchor a stair railing. When he was done, the repair was all but invisible.

Very prompt, professional, and honest. They also pointed out that we have a problem with the chimney and it needs a little work. They calked around flashing and repaired some loose siding. This was all part of the $99.00 Angie Deal. Overall we were very satisfied with what they gave us for the price we paid.
Description of Work: He inspected the roof and made minor repairs. We were surprise and happy to hear the the main roof on the house is relatively new and in good shape. He told us that the area we were concerned with did not have enough slope and should be replaced with a rubber roof. He has since sent us an estimate for the work and we are considering and will get a second estimate as I always do.

Our company had a fantastic experience with Bell Valley Contractors. Jed was prompt and quick with their initial estimate and displayed professional business practices throughout the project. Our project was a full house renovation including a new roof, siding, new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms and dormer addition. They worked on it daily and often weekends to complete on our time line to the best of their ability. We are very pleased at their quality of workmanship, there was no cutting corners and they met our expectations. Jed, Robert and the rest of their crew were always professional, curteous and friendly - a joy to work with. We will definitely be using them again on future projects and highly recommend.

I called to have a small kitchen cabinet shifted up the wall a few inches to fit a new fridge. I have a back problem or I would do it myself. I had a different cabinet shifted before by someone else who can no longer be contacted and it cost $50. I was told the cost would be a minimum of $180, over three times what it should cost. I talked with the person answering the phone and explained the situation that this was a small job and for someone who knows what they are doing will take 30 minutes. She said she would talk with someone and call me back that night. They never called back. I have a similar problem with other handymen on the list they will do small jobs but not for what they should cost. It you are disabled or elderly forget about it.

The member contacted me to have his cabinet shifted up to fit a refrigerator and had to have it done ASAP. He was frustrated with other handymen he had contacted because no one would get back to him. I gave him a price of $150 plus an hourly rate thereafter- obviously it was a standard pricing for an "emergency" job. I went further and said I would speak with Jed and see about a better price for him and if we were able to fit him in our schedule- we are booked with multiple projects. I did not contact the member that evening because we could not fit him into our very tight schedule and went the extra mile and spoke with a few reputable colleagues to see if they could help. We do not like turning anyone away! I should have made the member aware of this, but figured why call when I had no definite answer for him yet. I called this morning and left a message for him- only to find out via email we had a new review posted after I had left the message. I apologize for not leaving updates, however I did get back to him when I had an absolute definite answer.

We are remodeling our rec room and I wanted to replace my old fireplace mantle with something custom built that reflected our own ideas. It was hard to find a contractor who would do finished carpentry. Bell Valley stepped up and took the job with no hesitation. I had an idea of what I wanted and gave a picture of a similar mantle for them to use. Rob did an excellent job using my idea and then adding his own touch to create an extremely unique mantle that fit our large fireplace perfectly. I want to thank them for being very professional and keeping the job right on budget. I will definitely use them again for my next remodeling effort.

The repair person, Jed, showed up as scheduled and on time on the day of the work and began working immediately. Within 3 hours of starting the job was completed and the finished product looked as it did when it was originally installed. I was very pleased with the results of the work. The work was done very professionally and as good, if not better, than what had been done by the original house builders. The work area was cleaned following the work completion, and no damages were done to any shrubs or structures. Bell Valley Contractors' work was excellent and I would not hesitate to use their services again for any property repairs. The contractual price was fair and reasonable considering the nature of the work and the additional materials needed to complete the job in a professional manner.

It was very difficult getting in touch with the contractor. I used two separate email addresses to communicate the project & sent photos. I had to get Angie's list involved as I was unable to connect on the project, date & time after the first exchange of emails. The contractor showed up late; howevere, he did contact me to let me know. When he arrived I showed him the scope of the project & prioritied the most important items. (ie leave the painting portion if you are running low on time.) The contractor asked if I had gone out & bought the lumber/composite to replace the frame. This piece had never been discussed in the previous conversations nor was I used to measuring & going out to secure supplies for a contractor. When I said no, he asked if i would like to go pick up the supplies. He did then go to Lowes which was no more than 15 minutes away. He did change out the door frames & did do a good job. The sliding door screen he changed out the one with out the hole but had a some stretch marks.
Description of Work: Scope of the Job: The door frames needed to be replaced & painted for a sliding glass door & a the frame that encompassed 3 patio doors. the frame was to also be painted. The screens on the sliders were to be replaced focusing on the one that had the hole first.

I purchased the 3 hours of handyman service after calling Bell Valley Contractors to confirm they could do the job, which was to wrap the trim on five windows with aluminum. I set up an appointment for them to come and do the job on August 30 at 9:00. They emailed me to let me know they were running about an hour late, then called around 10:30 to cancel due to another emergency. We rescheduled for 9/13/13 at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m. they showed up without the materials or equipment for the job. Jed didn't seem to even want to do the job. I called the office and left a complaint. Kelly responded by email: > From: Bell Valley Contractors [mailto:bellvalleycontractors@aol.com] > Sent: Friday, September 13, 2013 9:55 AM > To: xxxxxxx@msn.com > Subject: > Keith, > I cannot apologize enough to make up for my serious failure. I have an offer for you, after much deliberation that I am hoping will remedy my serious errors. After speaking with Jed about what is required for your window, he would need to take measurements to fit the metal required for your window and yes, he does have access to the machine needed to do this. The project will take longer than 3 hours and we will gladly offer the extra time needed - free of charge. > I have failed on my end and there is no way around that, however this does not reflect the work Jed does and the reputation we are building on and off Angie's List. We would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to make this up and show you that we truly do offer great customer service and provide excellent workmanship. > I hoping you will at least think this over and allow us to make up for our shortcomings. > Please let me know your thoughts. > Sincerely, > Kelly I agreed to let them make it up. I purchased the materials and had them at the windows waiting for Jed to pick them up when he came to do the measurements. I communicated this all to Kelly, who confirmed the arrangement via email. I asked "Please keep me informed about when this project will be completed." Three weeks went by without any word from Bell Valley Contractors. I emailed Kelly on October 6: Hi Kelly, I am wondering when Jed will be doing the window wrapping at my home. It has been three weeks and I haven?t heard anything. The materials are still where I left them. Please let me know when I can expect to have this done. Thanks, Keith She replied: "Jed already has the metal- you can return yours if you choose too. He will be completing your window by October 14th- a week from tomorrow, at the latest." Tonight I got home. No sign of any work done. No email or voice mail. I emailed Kelly, expressing my displeasure and lack of trust that they were going to complete the job satisfactorily. Kelly responded: Keith, Jed has a very busy schedule and was going to wrap your windows at the end of last week- you have been in our schedule to perform the work. ( I conveyed this information to you previously on October 6th.) We cannot control the weather - The soonest he could come out would be Saturday of this coming weekend. I'm sure this will not suit you and to address the lack of communication I was going to email tomorrow morning to convey this information. If you would like to receive a refund, you must go through Angie's List to do so. You will be refunded for the amount you paid for at checkout with Angie's List. At this point we feel it is best for you to seek a refund and find another service provider. -Kelly Bell Valley Contractors www.bvcontractors.net 717-634-4446 So the end result of purchasing their 3 hour special... a whole lot of promises, lack of communication, lots of aggravation, and no product. The member and I e-mailed before Jed arrived at his home- I did make a mistake and did not properly convey the nature of the work to Jed. As you can see below I took full responsibility and attempted to make it up to this member. However, when Jed (and Rob) were at the member's home he started yelling, using inappropriate language and told Jed and Rob to leave. So no, I'm sure at that point Jed did not seem too interested in performing the work. I received a rude voice mail from the member after they had left and I immediately apologized and tried to remedy the situation- it was my fault, I owned up to it. However, I did not realize the extent of the member's outrage and how he handled our team when they were at his home. To be honest, had I known this, I would have called Angie's List myself and asked them to refund this man's money. Everyone makes mistakes, it happens, however we as a contractor expect to be treated civilly and with some degree of respect- just as we treat our customers with respect and dignity, regardless. As you can see from the e-mails, I offered free-of-charge services after the 3 hour deal was used up and I had him scheduled to have the work completed by October 14th - the weather did not permit Jed to complete this and I was going to e-mail the member this morning (October 15) to let him know that Jed was going to be out Saturday to complete and finish the windows. The member must have accidentally deleted parts of the emails between us and I have copied and pasted the full body of them below. Please start at the bottom- which is the first e-mail sent, by me. [member name removed], Jed has a very busy schedule and was going to wrap your windows at the end of last week- you have been in our schedule to perform the work. I also did not see any email or voicemail from you letting me know that there is a delay. I’m wondering what you meant by “I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to remedy this situation and I promise you will be pleased.” · I am not pleased by lack of any communication for three weeks. · I am not pleased to have yet another deadline go by without any work or any word. I’m wondering if I even want you to do any work on my house because I have no trust that it will be done well. And trust is an important factor in service industries. We had an agreement that I would provide the supplies. Then you wrote that Jed has the metal and I can return mine. Is his metal high quality or flimsy? Is it textured like the rest of my windows? Why should I trust you when you have yet to keep your word on anything? I think the best thing at this point would be for you to send me a check this week for $135, which is 3 hours of labor at your rate of $45/hour, which is what I bought. Otherwise, I will need to look at legal action to rectify this breach of contract. Thankfully I have everything in writing from our email trails. [member name and information removed] Hi [member name removed], Jed already has the metal- you can return yours if you choose too. Jed was quite personable and willing to take on the challenge of repairs. There was a strip of crowning that he discovered was rotten. The local store did not have the dimensions needed to replace it. He told me he knew where he could get the piece near where he lived and that it would cost about $35.00. I was lead to believe that he would purchase the item and return in about a week. I waited a couple of weeks and never heard from him. I made at least 2 phone calls and left voice mail messages asking him to call me back. I realize that there was a driving distance to come and do the work. I didn't know that when I purchased the "big deal." If the distance was a problem then geographic limitations should clearly be indicated by the contractor. I would have liked to have given all A's but there a section not finished and he never returned my phone calls. I would have gladly compensated him to come back to complete the job. That would have been negotiated over the phone.
Description of Work: He actually made 2 trips to a local supply store to purchase the materials needed to replace a section of rotten wood on the front corner of the house. He also repaired a section on the side of the porch.

They came out and quoted a competitive price to do the job and scheduled within a week. They picked up the door I ordered at Lowes and showed up when they said they would. They removed the old door, installed the new one, caulked and cleaned up, all before 3 pm. I am, so far, very satisfied with the job they did.
Description of Work: removed old door and installed a new bilco basement door
