Sean is prompt and professional. Good communication throughout. Work was started and completed on time. Quality was outstanding - floors look great. Also did an exceptional job cleaning up afterward. Minimal residual dust (and no debris) from a big job.

Found Maxwell Hardwood Floors (Sean) on Angie's List. He was very prompt in returning calls, giving me an estimate & scheduling the work dates. The job was done in the scheduled time with no problems. My 1950's floor looks great! I'd definitely reccommend Sean Maxwell & use him again for future projects.

Response from Maxwell Hardwood Floors LLC
This is a surprise to me? I was originally contracted to install her entire house with prefinished hardwood. Then, in the middle of the job, she tells me they are gonna postpone the kitchen installation until they have demo work done to take down walls. I told her , "no problem", "I will stop the flooring at a certain spot and leave it so it can be "toothed in" at a later date when she was ready". I even showed her and her husband what I planned on doing. they both agreed that would be fine. I received a call the night before final payment was due, blasting me that i didn't finish and I need to move the remaining boxes out of their house. It turned out that they had no intention of doing the kitchen floors for atleast 3 months after they move in. I was given the impression that the other work would be completed much sooner, so the jobsite was not "complete" as I normally would leave a job. After her and she and her husband blasting me on the phone, I calmly explained there was a big miscommunication, and would be up the following day to finish up as best I could by leaving the kitchen until they were ready to finish. They told me they were pleased, everything looked great and payed what they owed me for the work that was completed . I Planned on returning to install kitchen at a later date when they were ready..... I guess the miscommunication is still ongoing?...

My husband and I would highly recommend using Sean Maxwell. We found him using angie's list and were very pleased. we were looking to install hardwood floors in our living, dining and upstairs hallway as well as refinishing our stairs. I had asked for many different pricing options which Sean was very patient and precise with providing us. He gave us multiple options based on different priced flooring and was very helpful along the "planning" for the project. His work is outstanding and he is very honest and realistic with time. We felt comfortable with him at our home alone while we were at work. He always left the house very clean when he wasnt here working. Overall, Sean is A++++!

Sean came out to the house to provide a quote on installing hardwood in our office, upstairs hall and master bedroom. He was very helpful in offering suggestions on differnent types of wood flooring we could use and also answered some questions and made some recommendations regarding my existing flooring in terms of refinishing and staining it a different color. Pricing was fair and in line with other quote we obtaiend. In the end we just did the office since we are still trying to decide what we want to do for our upstairs hall and master bedroom. Sean and his associate did a great job installing the floor in small office. They completed the job quickly and the floor looks great! Overall Sean was very easy to work with for scheduling and was very accessible via email and phone. I will definitely use Maxwell Hardwood floors in the future.

Sean refinished our 100 year old hardwood floors while we were on vacation. He gave us the best price and we felt comfortable with him from the beginning. He showed up every time on time and came in a bit under budget. Imagine that! The floors were a bit tricky because they needed repair in a few spots. Sean's repairs and transitions look great, as does our entire living and dining rooms. We would recommend Sean without reservation. Thanks a million, Sean!

I called Maxwell three times before Sean called me back. I had a small refinishing job, one room, steps to the upstairs and the upstairs landing. I got the impression when I set up the first appointment for a quote that he really wasn't interested in my business but thought that maybe it was a misunderstanding. The first appointment for the quote was cancelled and I received a phone call at home. I skipped another appointment to get home to find a message on my voicemail that he had to go to a viewing which was understandable but he could have contacted me at work and I could have made my other appointment. We set up an appointment for that Saturday and I called him to let him know that I was 20 minutes away from my home and there was a small chance that he may get there before me. I waited an additional 30+ minutes for Sean to arrive. There was a car accident on Route 422 which was beyond anyones control. He did not seem interested in the job, took measurements and seemed annoyed when we told him that we only wanted to refinish certain rooms. He then did not give me an estimate instead he said he was late for his next job and asked me for my email address so he could send me a quote. Well needless to say, I never received an estimate. If he didn't want to do the job, he should have said so. He wasted his time and more importantly my time.

After reading lots of reviews on Angie's List I selected Sean and another company to provide us a quote. The first company I was not very impressed with, however, Sean really seemed to know what he was talking about and we selected him to perform the work. He provided us a quote when he said he would and gave us several options to choose from. Instead of installing new hardwoods on the stairs we decided to have them refinished instead. This was Sean's recommendation and was also a significant savings. We selected a wider plank than was quoted and Sean quickly provided a revised price. He worked with us to arrange delivery of the material (3 days prior to installation so it could acclimate to the house) and it went real smoothly. Once installation began they moved fast, they finished everything within 5 days (just like Sean said). They did a very good job cleaning up after themselves every day. Their installation job was top notch. Sean even created a custom stain color for our stairs to match the hardwoods, very impressive. I can't say enough good things about the work that he and his other installer did. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them.

When Sean first walked into the house, he said ALL of the flooring was too old, had already been refinished too many times and was too thin to refinish. He said he would not do the job. He would only install new flooring. When we told him we already had 2 other folks come out and they were willing to refinish, he quickly changed his tune. Then he stated that by being very careful, he could refinish everything but the foyer. He insisted that the foyer needed to be replaced. I know Maxwell has glowing reviews on Angie's list. And I could take this experience in 1 of 2 ways. 1) He was going for the higher paying job. New flooring is significantly more expensive than refinishing. 2) He really wants perfection and will not take any risks. Considering the other reviews, I'm going to go with he wants perfection and will not take risks on "iffy" floors, for fear that they may not turn out perfect. After speaking with several other re-finishers and contractors, the general concensus was that these floors could be refinished successfully, if done with extreme care. We went with a contract who was confident in his ability to provide what we requested.
Description of Work: Sand and refinish 2nd floor bedroom, dressing room, hallway, stairs, living room, dining room. 1 coat sealer, 3 coats urethane, install quarter-round. Remove existing flooring in foyer and prep sub-floor. Install new 5/16" x 2" red oak select top nail in foyer.

Response from Maxwell Hardwood Floors LLC
As an owner of a small business that receives ALL of his work, 100%, based on referrals, I do take great pride in my work and look to provide perfection in every job I take on. On that note, I did not think that these floors were salvageable, and too thin to be sanded correctly . They were over 80 years old and had been sanded at least 3 or more times already.ALL of the nail heads were at the surface and 50% of the floor or so were already cracking and gaping signifying that they were not able to be sanded with the typical 3 cut process. Yes , I did say that areas would need to be replaced if I were to attempt sanding, but was not going to try to sand it with 3 different grits, (the way it should be done). Also, I would not try to "inflate my price" to get more money out of the customer, to me,that defeats the purpose of attempting to secure a job for my company. It already is a highly competitive field of work, that has many "fly by night" contractors and guys that are in it for a quick in & out job, and many consumers are not comparing apples to apples, but just looking at the bottom price. So, why would I may it more difficult for myself to book jobs by making it more expensive than it needs to be..All that being said, Im glad I DID NOT get contracted to do the work, I got a bad review from the potential customer,WITHOUT EVEN DOING ANYTHING BUT GIVE MY HONEST OPINION TO HER.

Sean Maxwell is the guy I worked with and he was here for about 10 days. The reason why I chose him was very simple. There are a lot of companies out there where a nice guy shows up and tells you what you want to hear. Then a truck full of people who don?t speak English and who got trained recently show up. They then come out to do their job. Whereas, Sean came out to give me the estimate and he himself came out with his helper to do the job. Hence there was supervision so that you don?t end up with somebody who has no idea of what they are doing. That?s something that I liked about Sean. I realized that they could have done it for $1200, but it?s a whole different process. He used multiple coatings and that?s why I went with him. I liked the multi-step finishing process and the product he used seems to be the new standard for a high quality finish. I also read a lot of feedback about him. I could afford to pay the extra money to get the job done the way I wanted it done. So I disregarded the value aspect and just wanted good job. On the other hand, I found out that the price to get the work done myself to replicate the way he would do it would be about the same. In reality, he is not expensive, but there are a lot of steps and there is a lot time required to do a thorough job. If you are going to stay in your home for a long time, then Maxwell Hardwood Floors is the right company to choose, but you will be wasting money if you are going to sell your house within a short period of time. He would probably come up with some options if you ask him to make your floor look nice for at least 60 days. A lot of people don?t give him that opportunity. They come in and ask him to give a quote. They then get upset with the price and he loses them. Sean can handle your needs, but you need to be smart enough to articulate what you are trying to do. He did delay a bit in getting back to me, but that was because he had some emergency surgery done. The floor finish that he uses is more maintainable than a traditional floor finish. He has top of the line German machines to get the work done. It was a good chunk of money for the materials used, equipment used and for the job done. The whole problem with my job for the cost was me because of my high demands of everything that I wanted. Most people go with a low cost provider. Sean is competent of assessing the kind of damage you have. He has a dog, but he said that he constantly cleans up the floor and the scratches on the floor. He explained more about the coating system he used. I would consider using Maxwell Hardwood Floors in the future too.

I have used Maxwell Flooring in the past and it was a great experience then and it was just as good this time around. I have the top nailed strip flooring with a border that is about 90 yrs old which always is difficult to work with. Sean gave me a great price and the work is beautiful. It looks like a brand new floor. Sean blended the new wood with the old wood very nicely. He helped me pick out the correct finish that would stand up the best to "dog traffic". Sean is very detail oriented and it shows thru the whole job and finished product. Very little dust was made during the project, so the rest of the house was very livable during the job. I could not be happier with the result.

Over the years, the summer humidity had caused our parquet kitchen floor to buckle, though it always went down in the winter. Last summer’s constant rains proved too much for it, however, and the buckling parquet not only came off in several places, but toward spring also showed signs of mold underneath. Three companies came out to give us estimates, Sean’s among them. All three seemed very qualified, and gave roughly similar estimates, but Sean asked some questions the others didn’t, and carefully checked out the humidity index not only in the kitchen, which was high, but also in the crawlspace underneath, which was higher still. We decided to go with him, and are very happy we did. He started the job the day he said he would, came on time, and from beginning to end worked neatly and efficiently with his assistant, cleaning up after each day’s work and completing ahead of schedule what turned out to be a beautiful job. He was wonderfully professional in his manner, and we felt so comfortable with him in the house that we had no problem letting him have key access during three days when we had to be away from home. Sean also put a vapor barrier in the crawlspace for a very nominal amount, an option he had offered in his original estimate. There were no surprises, Sean’s workmanship was perfect, we are delighted to give him a top review here, and would use him again in a heartbeat.

For some time I had been wanting to have some wood floors refinished. I saw the excellent reviews for Sean Maxwell on this site and gave him a call. He provided an estimate during an evening (appreciate that convenience) within a couple of days after receiving my message. He did an excellent, excellent job. The floors look great. Sean is professional and honest. He performed the work when we arranged and promptly arrived on time each day. It is just Sean and another employee so they are doing all the work. Not a different person each day. It reinforces the benefits of dealing with a small business owner: he cares about every job and does each job. If you are thinking about installing wood floors or refinishing some, give Sean a call.

The carpets in this house were put down in 1986. Mr. Maxwell was able to give me an estimate with everything spelled out clearly. I agreed that any extended repair work would be extra, due to the fact you never know what you find in an old house. He pulled up the old carpet, and tacks. A horrendous mess had occurred due to the old padding adhering to the old finish. He had to hand remove all of this gummy tarry mess before he could even start. He repaired the areas missing wood, and completely fixed the landing, which had been pieced plywood. He let me look at many samples of stain for red oak, which was what my floors are made of. I chose to leave the floors the beautiful natural color that came up after sanding. The floors are natural finish, coated with water based poly, semi gloss finish. They are gorgeous. He works very efficiently, and there was absolutely nothing for me to clean up. He provided me with care instructions. He had key access to my house, and is honest and trustworthy. He will give you his honest opinion, but when it came to choosing stain color, he said that was my decision. He has a strong work ethic. I would hire him again, but he finished all the floors that needed refinishing! The extra work and supplies he needed were added onto the estimate. I was totally pleased with the beautiful results.

Sean did an absolutely beautiful job on our floors! Not only was his estimate the best we had gotten, but the job came in right on the money. And best of all, there was nothing to clean up afterward. I was afraid of all the dust, and put this job off for years because of the horror stories I had heard. But his process was exceptionally clean we did not have to do anything. Sean was also extremely pleasant and easy to deal with. I would highly recommend his work to anyone!

Our hardwood floors were in very bad shape after being covered with carpet for decades in a house with several pets. We were trying to get the floors refinished quickly, as we were expecting our first child and were concerned about doing the floors after the baby arrived due to all of the fumes. Sean squeezed us into his schedule even though he was quite booked. The floors look better then I had ever expected, and you can't even tell the areas which were repaired. Additionally, once the job was supposed to be finished, Sean felt that one more coat of sealer was needed so he came back the next day, a Saturday, to make sure the additional coat was applied, all at no charge. It was very obvious that he takes great pride in his work.
