We were happy with their work and the technician's up front attitude with us. The only weird thing is that I thought he was coming out to give me an estimate, and he thought he was coming out for a service call, so he was planning to charge me for one. At that point, I decided to just go ahead and use them, but their price was competitive with the other estimate I had gotten for the fix.
Description of Work: Our A/C wasn't working, so South Hills came out the same day, added freon and did a general check-up on the system.

I woke to a cold house on 12/14/10, needless to say the furnace had stopped working. I called at 6 AM and got the owner out of bed. He had Alan here by 7:45AM Alan then examined the problem and told me the bad news.He explained everything to me in detail and then showed me his view with the camera he had, I was not too suprise since my furnace was at least 25 years old. Pat the owner was here by noon and installed the new furnace and got my house warm again. They worked strainght thru till 7 PM. Alan came back two days later and finished the duct work. My only thought is he says he offers seniors a discount, I am retired and I received no discount.
Description of Work: They installed a furnace and fix duct work that the previous furnace people screwed up. The over all work was great. they were very clean and informative.

I originally called to have a 220 line installed in the kitchen for a new electric range we were planning to purchase. Knowing that we had a broken doorbell as well, I asked them to take a look at that while they were here. They agreed to take a look and fix it for a minimal charge since they were onsite, which I agreed to. The price for the 220 line ($500) was more than other estimates I received, but I decided to go with South Hills Electric because they had a good reputation. I was not impressed with the results I received for the price. They used a plug that sat outside of the wall, which was not my expectation. The stove ended up sitting five inches out from the wall because of this. I tried over and over to reach them to come back over and put it in the proper place or do an in-wall version, but they were unresponsive. I had to move the plug myself, but the range still doesn't sit right. The doorbell was even worse. The original doorbell did not work at all, so I purchased a brand new doorbell for them to put in place. They more than doubled the original cost to do this, but I was not too concerned as long as it was fixed properly. After they left, the doorbell worked for about two weeks before it stopped working. I came home a few weeks after this and the doorbell was actually buzzing, hot and smoking. I disconnected it myself and tried many times again to reach them to come and fix it. They were again unresponsive. When I finally reached someone weeks later, they told me it would be $90 an hour to have someone take a look and fix something they seem to done incorrectly in the first place. I tried one more time just to have someone come and disconnect the doorbell to make sure it was safe, but they would only do it for a $70 visit fee. They said I would not be charged if they determined it was something they had done, but given my experiences with them so far, I didn't trust that they would tell me it was their fault under any circumstances. I had someone more reliable come to help us with the issue. Overall, I have been very unhappy with the experience. They have great ratings from others, but unfortunately this is not the level of service I received. *** Update *** I thought it necessary to post a brief update after reading the curious response from the provider below: * "While our preferred method of installation is flush mounting a range outlet, the wall behind the range was brick so a surface mounted range receptacle was used for this application." ~This is not true. The wall behind the range was (and is) drywall, not brick. * "We returned and moved the outlet free of charge and still the customer was unsatisfied." ~ This is not true. I moved the outlet myself after the provider was unresponsive to my requests. * About the doorbell, I find it interesting that they mention they don't warranty other people's parts because I was never offered a warrantied doorbell part by the provider. I had to go purchase one myself (a good one) and was never told this would affect the work. * "Once a customer or any other technician touches the work we perform, it is impossible for us to warranty it and absurd to think we would." ~I'm not sure what the provider expected me to do here. Considering their lack of response to my phone calls (for weeks on end, I might add), I don't think there are many homeowners out there that wouldn't find a way to disconnect the system causing the problem on their own, especially if there is a safety concern. Not answering the phone is a great way to make sure you don't have to warranty your work. I'm not going to waste any more time reviewing each point of dispute and in the posted provider response, but I think it's clear that my experience was not ideal. Buyer beware.

Response from South Hills Electric LLC Heating & Cooling
We are sorry you are unhappy. We take our customer responses and comments very seriously. Our reputation is built on trust; therefore we must set the record straight to avoid any misunderstandings. Since so many accusations have been made, we will respond to each individually. The customer says, “They used a plug that sat outside of the wall, which was not my expectation.” Expectations and reality sometimes conflict. While our preferred method of installation is flush mounting a range outlet, the wall behind the range was brick so a surface mounted range receptacle was used for this application. This is industry standard for such a situation. The customer says,” I had to move the plug myself, but the range still doesn't sit right.” This is not our recollection at all. We returned and moved the outlet free of charge and still the customer was unsatisfied. The customer says, “I purchased a brand new doorbell for them to put in place.” South Hills Electric stands behind and warranties all our work and equipment we purchase. The customer is responsible for any equipment we don’t purchase and therefore we cannot warranty someone else’s parts. Once again, industry standard and stated in the contract which we can provide. The customer says, “After they left, the doorbell worked for about two weeks before it stopped working. I came home a few weeks after this and the doorbell was actually buzzing, hot and smoking.” Once again, we do not warranty someone else’s parts. The manufacturer of the doorbell or the supply house would cover this warranty situation. The description of work performed on the contract clearly states there was a break in a wire in the wall. We used another existing wire in the wall because the customer didn’t want to pay for a new wire to be run. When we tried to charge the customer for the additional testing and diagnostic fee, the customer complained and was only charged $90 for a $180 service call. The customer says, “I disconnected it myself and tried many times again to reach them to come and fix it. They were again unresponsive. When I finally reached someone weeks later, they told me it would be $90 an hour to have someone take a look and fix something they seem to done incorrectly in the first place.” There are two issues here. Once a customer or any other technician touches the work we perform, it is impossible for us to warranty it and absurd to think we would. Second as the next paragraph states, the customer said they already disconnected it so why call us to disconnect it? The customer says, “I tried one more time just to have someone come and disconnect the doorbell to make sure it was safe, but they would only do it for a $70 visit fee. They said I would not be charged if they determined it was something they had done, but given my experiences with them so far, I didn't trust that they would tell me it was their fault under any circumstances.” If the customer was so unhappy with our service and repeated free visits (2) why then call us again? It is our belief that had the call been free, the customer would have had us in again or why would they bother calling? Running a new wire would have solved this problem at the start, which was refused. Our service was performed by 2 different technicians with a combined 50+ years of experience. Our record is impeccable. We don’t appreciate the inference our work is substandard or that we are untrustworthy. We went above and beyond to help this customer and were rewarded with The work date of the original invoice we completed was done 3-10-2010 and is available to correct your misleading statements. Also, why wait 8 months to complain? If we were unresponsive how did we set up the free and paid service calls received? It seems nothing can satisfy this customer and for that we are sorry.

I scheduled the work about a week and a half ahead of time; they were supposed to call me to confirm the date/time since they warned me they sometimes get backed up with emergency A/C calls. They did not call to confirm, so I called them and it turned out they had not written down the date/time we had agreed upon. (It turned out they were able to show at the agreed-upon time anyway, but this still didn't make a good impression.) On the day of the work, they arrived about half an hour late (got lost), but were prompt in getting to work once they got here. South Hills told me they would send two people--one for the furnace work and one for the electric, and they did. The work took a bit longer than expected because they had to go out to get a new flue collector box. But they told me their hourly rate upfront, so the final bill was not a huge surprise. They knew what they were doing, they explained things thoroughly, and were patient with my questions. Overall, it was a positive experience. (I guess I've had enough other appointment and lateness issues with contractors that it just seems like par for the course.)
Description of Work: Replaced flue collector box and added kill switch in furnace and examined heat exchanger for leaks; removed knob-and-tube wiring and disconnected electrical service to an outdoor shed.

Our central air stopped working yesterday. Found South Hills Electric here, called and left a message. Pat called me last evening and arranged to come here this morning. Diagnosed the problem and fixed the unit within an hour or two. Very professional, knowledgable and friendly. Fair price for the work done. Will definitely use South Hills Electric again for maintenance/repair for heating/cooling and other work if necessary.

I needed rewiring of three ceiling fixture boxes I put in during a kitchen remodel. When I first called requesting service, I explained my problem, and Pat was very helpful in just explaining what I would need to do in order to meet code. However after spending the previous week attempting to wire these boxes I just asked him to come out. Pat completely rewired the three ceiling fixture boxes and replaced one box with a mud ring. He also wired a couple GFCI outlets for me as well. Pat was very helpful and even explained how and what work he was doing to me for future reference. I thought the price was reasonable for the work done. I'll definitely use him again.

Pat, the owner, was punctual, courteous, and provided a free estimate. After reviewing the bedroom and basement ducts, his impression is that the HVAC system is working properly. However, we did discover the damper was not set correctly. That one fix provided more airflow to the master bedroom. If the adjusted damper does not fix the problem, Pat agreed that we need to identify potential energy leaks before putting a lot of money into upgrading the HVAC system. Should we desire to make our HVAC system more efficient in the future, he made some practical suggestions. Pat was very honest and helpful. So much so, I gave him a gratuity for his time since his visit improved our situation without repairs. And he didn't mind me picking his brain either, so I learned some things as well. I won't hesitate to contact or refer South Hills EHC.
Description of Work: A visual inspection of my home air ducts leading to the master bedroom on the second floor. The airflow going to this one room seemed less and the room temperature is hotter (summer) / cooler (winter) than the other bedrooms. I suspected the issue is a combination of the airflow and wall insulation.

These guys were super! He was here when he told me he would be here. They did great work and were very clean and neat. The price was reasonable - I got prices from several people for this job. They were very professional.
Description of Work: He wired my new garage and rewired my entire house electrically. I had a new Air Conditioning unit put in by another provider, and it was installed incorrectly. Pat reset the whole system for my furnace and air conditioner and didn't even charge me because he was already here doing the electrical work.
