Jay was excellent on the job, had never used South Hills Electric before, but I'm very happy we decided to go with them, very professional, seem to be an expert at his job, was very patience with me, I move very slowly, and most service people that come to the house get irritated because of my slowness, but he stated don't rush and actually helped me to go downstairs where the breaker box is. Will use again.

Condemned 5 year old furnace with normal wear. Turned gas off and said I would need a new furnace. He would give me a nice deal. 12 months no interest, could have it installed in a day. Nothing was wrong with furnace. Did nothing with water heater except tell me it looked fine. Wasted money. Bought coupon through Angieslist.

2 odd things with this service person - not good or bad, just odd: - Checked gas @ valve itself for overpressure. I've never seen that done before - I did not see him check the burners; they have been fine, obviously producing heat Like i said, just odd

electrician, ceiling fans

It did not go well. The installation of the ceiling fan itself was fine, but the electrician was extremely careless with removing the old fan and put numerous black marks on the ceiling from the handle of his drill in a circular pattern around the base of the fan along with dirty finger prints on the ceiling. When I asked the electrician why there were so many marks on the ceiling and asked what happened, he simply asked if I had a magic eraser and offered to "erase" the marks from the ceiling. He did so and removed the black marks, but the use of the magic eraser left streaks in the ceiling that are still easily visible. As a side note, the electrician seemed more concerned with putting South Hills Electric stickers on my panel, water heater, and furnance, than he did with ensuring that he did a carefull job with the installation of the fan. After the service, I immediately contacted South Hills Electric and sent them photos of the ceiling (attached to this review) to ask them how they were going to address this issue. I was put in contact with their Operations Manager who I had to follow up with multiple times to finally get a response. My request was to either refund my money or pay to have my ceiling repainted to fix the damage their electrician caused. Unfortunately, South Hills Electric denied my request and is accepting no accountability for their actions claiming that the deal was purchased through Angie's List so they are not responsible based on the "contract" that I had agreed to. The following is the response I received from their Operations Manager: "After reviewing the photos and the contract agreement. I see that this was purchased thru Angies list. That being said unfortunately we are not going to refund your money nor are we responsible for painting your ceiling. As stated in the contract you signed. You can view this on your receipt. The price was not what we charge, this was an Angies list offer. Sorry for any inconvenience's." After this experience, I would not recommend using South Hills Electric in any capacity as it's clear they are assuming no accountability for their carelessness. It also brings into question whether it's worth purchasing these Angie's List deals, but I am working through Angie's List to submit a Service Quality Guarantee Claim to get this addressed. Hopefully Angie's List will reconsider offering deals from South Hills Electric in the future.
Description of Work: I purchased the $75 Ceiling Fan Installation and Inspection Angie's List deal for the installation of a new ceiling fan. The job included removing an old ceiling fan and installing the new fan.

Very well - technicians arrived on time and were very friendly. They explained the process well and didn't over-charge. Since they don't specialize in air duct cleaning, I'm sure the more expensive companies do a better job at cleaning but I know they got a lot of dirt/dust/debris/kid's toys/etc out of my vents and I'm very satisfied with the price paid for the amount of work done! Wouldn't hesitate to hire again!

I stupidly bought this service of Angie's list thinking that they will prepare my furnace for the season. Was I wrong. This is a scam to get into your house and try selling you something that you don't really want. To be fair we didn't get to that point, I didn't want him in the house anymore. He started telling me that he is a certifies tech and it is his responsibility to make sure everything is working in your furnace. And no he is not a cleaning lady to clean your burners. But he'll see if he is going to let (!?!) it run. So my furnace apparently wasn't installed correctly but even if it was it is too old, because they only run for 10-15 years (!). If so why even bother to clean it, I should've probably just call them to install a new one. The tech Anthony was nasty and condescending and there is no way I would ever touch the company again. At the end I didn't let them perform the 'services' and they didn't return my money but they taught me a lesson, if it's cheap it is probably not worth it.

Mr [Member Name Removed], You purchased the 39.00 for an early bird furnace or end of season AC tune-up. Per the deal here is what is included. $39 for your choice of a furnace or air conditioner tune-up Valid for 1 HVAC system only Furnace tune-up includes checking gas burners, pilot assembly, thermocouple, burner flame (gas-pressure adjustment), heat exchanger, flue venting, fan control, safety device and electrical wiring, blower speed, amp draw, and belt (tension adjustment); lubricating all moving parts; checking for overall safe operation. Our technicians are not permitted to turn the furnace on until they check the heat exchanger Per the national gas code! Your wife would not let our technician check the heat exchanger for cracks, a cracked heat exchanger has the potential to increase carbon monoxide levels and has the potential to pose a danger to the occupants. If he would have turned on the furnace and there was a cracked heat exchanger the technician could be held liable if anything was to happen. Our technician never said anything about replacing your equipment, and we never sent you a price to replace your equipment. Nowhere in the deal does it say we are going to sweep out your furnace with a shop vac!

Note About Pricing:-I did not price shop but I am satisfied from past experience that the price for the diagnostic and repair service was in alignment with other providers of top quality service. I do not consider price to be a major consideration when choosing providers of professional services. Description. The service was performed on two different days. On September 22nd, James, of South Hills Electric, did the annual furnace check. He advised me that the humidifier (which had been installed by another company) was misaligned and was dripping water on the exhaust pipe and furnace and would cause premature rust if not corrected. He also advised me that the furnace should have a GFI switch and the outlet near the washing machine in the utility room should be a GFI. In addition, he pointed out that the exhaust pipes should have three screws at each joint instead of the two that had been installed at the time I purchased the furnace (2013). We scheduled his return for October 2nd, at which time completed all the work. I also had some questions about furnace filtering systems for allergies, which James answered. I also note that I have asked 2 other HVAC technicians about the spotting on my furnace and exhaust pipes, including the installer, without receiving a satisfactory answer. James is the first person to correctly diagnose the problem, and demonstrated to me how the humidifier misalignment was causing the problem before the repair as well as demonstrating the correct water flow after the repair. Considering that rusty exhaust pipes and furnace parts are a safety as well as an economic concern, this was no small problem. Of course the installer should have put the humidifier in correctly; however, once the problem became evident the installer and the other furnace technician I asked should have been able to diagnose it. James demonstrated competence and professionalism in handling a serious furnace issue. James was prompt, professional, courteous, and patiently answered all my questions. I decided to purchase the annual maintenance package as I am satisfied that I will receive excellent care for my HVAC systems from James and South Hills Electric LLC.
Description of Work: Annual furnace check, remove and realign furnace humidifier, install GFI switch for furnace and GFI outlet in utility room, install third screw in each joint of exhaust pipe.

It was okay. It was a deal. They didn't do anything. They blew out the ducting, but they didn't use any of the brushes that you normally are supposed to do like a normal company. They just used high pressure air. I didn't know it until my mom actually told me.

I will NEVER use this company again. They seriously overcharged me. They charged $408 to replace ONE dimmer switch with a standard on-off toggle, and until I vociferously objected, they were going to add on their $89 fixed fee to come out and check. When I asked for an itemized bill, they refused to provide one, saying only that they charge a flat fee and that the switch was commercial grade. I know their electrician gets $52/hour, and commercial switches are available retail for under $20. It took the electrician just under an hour to complete the job. In other words, the cost to the company was $72. Double it to give them a "fair" profit, that's $144, which I would have gladly paid. But $408, and not able to provide an itemization?? Please note that I'm not the only customer with this complaint. Angie's list has received at least four other complaints of a similar nature over the past two years.

Response from South Hills Electric LLC Heating & Cooling
Here at South Hills, we use a very common standardized pricing structure. Much like most of the industry. We do NOT purchase our parts online or from some box store. All of our parts are purchased through ELECTRICAL supply companies throughout the Pittsburgh area and most are OEM parts. Those supply houses have to make money also, in which case there is a mark up we must pay. I"m sure your experience with our technician was much different than any other service company you've dealt with. We take great pride here at South Hills Electric in being one of the best in the business. Sometimes that means we cannot be the cheapest. (Although we are certainly not the most expensive!) All of our employees are drug tested, background checked, uniformed and go through weekly continued education courses. All work is documented with pictures, videos and notes. All of which are available to you at any time through our website. All trucks are well marked, clean and fully stocked to preform almost any task on the spot. I'm sure you will not argue that your technician was friendly, on time, called when on the way, informative, and provided you with up front pricing which you signed for and above all else able to answer any and all questions you had. As mentioned earlier, we are in the business to be one of the best. With that said, we only employ the best. Believe it or not, trades men also receive health insurance, life insurance, company vehicles (which must be maintenanced) gas cards, company cell phones and iPads, uniforms (which must be laundered) vacation time, the proper tools, and the education and ability to preform the task properly the first time! Not to mention the MANY things internally that must be taken care of. Office personnel, phones, lights, rent / mortgage, office supplies, licensing, permits etc.

It appeared that all the servicing done was geared toward a sale. I received two estimates to replace my HVAC system BEFORE the tech left. An hour later I received a call from the main office offering to come out with an infrared camera to further inspect the unit. When I said that I had a warranty on the house, there was no further discussion. I was given no written report nor was I asked to sign anything stating that the inspection has been done. Very suspicious.

Anything about this company is the same in terms of my review and how I evaluate them. I would give them all the same rating, otherwise I wouldn't have continued to use them since 2014 or 2013. They provide a great service for a very reasonable price. My HVAC system is about 20 years old and I'm trying to maintain it. Given its age, I'm so appreciative that they're trying to keep what I have working versus selling me something that would probably cost $12,000 or $14,000. $39 compared to $14,000, I'm very grateful.
