This was a big deal purchase. They originally came and did not have the correct size humidifier so they had to schedule a different day to come out. he did not have the correct parts. The worker who did the installation was just fine. From what I recall they left the work area clean. I did not research the price. I have not had any problems with it yet although it is only about a year old.
Description of Work: I bought a whole house humidifier from them.

I just called to ask what a wiring inspection costs to get power back on to a property and the representative I spoke to hung up on me. She asked where I was calling from and what company I was from, stated, "we don't do REO properties at this time" and hung up. We need to get power back on to this property and that was not a helpful conversation, I could have asked why? Maybe at least received a price but a note that we should look at other companies for some reason, or at least a thank you and goodbye. It's okay, I understand, but customer service will take you a long ways. Thank You

Hello, We do not service Hurricane, UT. We service 25-mile radius from Pittsburgh. You were not able to provide me with the address. We are not able to schedule any appointments with out speaking to the homeowner we cannot quote a price over the phone. There is no way for us to determine the cost of a wiring inspection in our service area, due to different borough and the electric company ordinance and cost and fees. We take great pride in our customer service.! I’m sorry that you felt I hung up on you, I thought you hung up on me.

I called South Hills Electric to replace a porcelain pull chain light bulb holder which is a very small job. Donna from the office quoted me a price of $125 which I agreed to. ?Later on I got a call from James , the installer, saying that he was on his way and that the price was going to be $350. I told him that their price was outrageous and told him not to come. ?I called a different Angie's list Electrician who did the job for $75.00.

Made apt. for 9-28 to get work done. Turned out it was for an estimate ($90), and they didn't have the materials to do the plumbing work. I fixed the electrical problem myself and got an estimate for the plumbing - $445 to add drain pipes to the relief valves from the water heater and the boiler (home inspector suggested this as a safety issue). Water heater had a drain pipe but it was reduced to 1/2" copper from the 3/4" discharge - needed to be 3/4". Boiler did not have any. Estimate seemed high but I thought it was because they would have to thread and cut iron pipe to make the connections. Estimates are now done on an i-Pad and you get very little info - just a $ amount. No itemization of trip charge, material costs, hourly rate, etc. Scheduled the work for 10-12. They called the week before to move the apt. back to 2pm because they were short a technician. He showed at 2:40 and did not call to say he was running late or apologize. Spent 10 minutes trying to remove the old pipe with pliers since he couldn't find a wrench in his truck (it was a mess!). Finally got the old pipe off and spent 10 minutes putting on plastic fittings and 3/4" plastic pipe. I checked at Lowe's and the materials were less than $5. Tried to sell me a new water heater, then took 5 minutes to do the paperwork on the i-Pad. $445 for a 10 minute job - no special tools needed and $5 worth of materials! The office called to see if the technician had showed up and I told her I was unhappy. She said send an e-mail - the supervisor would be interested in my experience. Sent an e-mail and no response. Sent a letter with pictures of the work and still no response. I don't know what has happened to South Hills Electric. My father and I have used them over the years at this home (their stickers are on the electrical panel, water heater, furnace and air conditioner), and I have always thought of them as professional and reasonable. I don't know if it is the new i-Pad based estimating system, or if there is new management, but be careful so that you are not over charged as I was.

The call never was completed. I checked their response area before calling & it included my location. SHE confirmed my call & I asked to delay their visit pending travel on our schedule. Upon return, I called twice & never got a callback. I checked their response area again & noticed that my location was no longer in their response area. Subtle message but I "got it." Calling & telling me that 'we made a mistake .. would have been nice but that didn't happen. The customer service aspect of undoing the tentative call left something to be desired. NOTE: I would have given an Overall Rating above of "N/A" if it was a choice but I didn't wish to use the "F" rating either. I just wouldn't call them again, period.

This was the nightmare that every person dreads from a service man. James first used a gadget that is supposed to turn on the furnace. When he used this gadget, the furnace turned on and immediately turned off - he used this as proof that the furnace wasn't working. I then used the furnace thermostat to turn the furnace on and it worked fine. He covered for this by saying that his gadget wasn't working. However, he persisted in acting like there was something wrong with my furnace. He said that over $1,000 worth of parts would be required to fix the it. But, he pointed out that I should just buy a new furnace. He also used scare tactics - (threat of carbon monoxide poisoning, moisture in the unit would cause a short out and be dangerous.) Of course, I suspected that he was a fraud, so the very next day I had the furnace inspected by a second furnace man. He went over my furnace very carefully and said there was nothing wrong with it. The reason why we value Angie's List is to avoid the experience I had with South Hills Electric. This company should not be recommended on Angie's List. I spent $56 to be lied to, then spent more money to have the job be done by an honest person.

The light was installed in the right place, but the technician hooked up the light to an existing transformer that ran my humidifier.. This transformer was not strong enough to run both things at the same time. The transformer failed and as a result, I did not have humidified air last winter nor did the light work to disinfect the air in my house. I just found this today when I was having my furnace checked for the upcoming winter. The issue was that a good product was installed improperly and did not work as a result.

It was a little misleading. They could have been a little more straightforward as to what it included. When he got out here, the estimate pretty much doubled than what it would actually cost to have everything done. It would have been helpful to know exactly what was included. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that that was how it was. He did tell me that they were one of the more expensive companies. So, he was honest. With what he quoted me, it involved a panel and an inspection by a company that they used. He was really kind of pushing the inspection company that they used versus saying that it would just need inspection, meaning I could go with anyone that I choose. He wasn't pushy per se. H was very prompt in getting me the quote on what it would actually cost to perform the whole service. He did it right there on the spot and then he followed that up with an email. So, that was nice. I was very honest and I told them that I didn't have it in my budget to do that and asked how do I go back and get a refund and he just told me to contact Angie's List and that it would be refunded and that there would be no problems. So, he was honest and upfront about everything once he got here. But the offer itself, could have been more detailed. I got a refund and it was very prompt. He was on time.

,They were professional and took time to explain what they found and made recommendations. They labeled our circuit breakers using room names that we gave them so labeling would make sense to us. However, as our house is older and has been rehabbed a few times, some outlets where on circuits that were not confined to a single room. So a few outlets on the third floor may be tied to the guest bedroom breaker. This made labelling the panel very difficult. If I had to do it over again, I would have suggested that the worker testing each outlet write the breaker number on the back of the outlet cover so there is no confusion as to which breaker an outlet is tied to.
Description of Work: South Hills Electric called us the morning of the scheduled inspection and arrived a few minutes early. They inspected our electric panel, wiring where visible and labeled the circuit breakers.

I called for an estimate for a ground wire on a water meter, and upon inspection it was determined there was rust and corrosion on my breaker box, and the whole thing would need to be replaced. Fine. But the company never followed up with their estimate, so I had to call to schedule the appointment. I set the appointment for 8-9am on a Friday morning. At the time of scheduling, I asked if someone would call 15 minutes before arrival and was told they don't do that. I explained that I wouldn't be at the property, but they assured me I was the first appointment of the day, so they'd be at the property between 8 and 9am. That's not helpful but whatever. By 10:15am, no one had showed up or called. I called the company and a dispatcher said "he'll be there in a few minutes." 15 minutes later, no electrician. I called back, and the dispatcher was surprised the guy wasn't there. He said he'll call the electrician then call me back. A few minutes later, I get a call back that he's in traffic. Within 15 minutes, he shows up. Turns out, he was in traffic - coming from another job. I was not his first job of the day after all. It's now 10:45 and I've been waiting nearly three hours. I called to complain and left a message. No call back after a week, so I called again. Left another message and figured they didn't care because they'd already charged my credit card. The work was fine, the electrician was fine, but the service was not.

Well, I scheduled an appointment through Angies List after purchasing a coupon for a $77 Tune-up and up to one pound of coolant. The service technician showed up as scheduled and was courteous and professional. One of the reasons I purchased the coupon was that my air conditioner seemed to be running harder than usual and having a difficult time keeping the temp at the desired level on my thermostat. I felt that I probably had a small leak and that it needed charged and the reason I purchased the coupon initially. After arriving and running through the standard diagnostics and tune-up the technician indicated that I probably had a leak on one of the coils and that it would be quite expensive to replace the part and suggested purchasing a new air conditioner. Of course, neither was what I planned and not in the budget for me to replace if it could simply be recharged (hoping that the leak was small and that I could still get more use out of my air conditioner for the time being). I indicated that I really didn't want to purchase a new air conditioner at this time and replacing the part would be expensive and chose to just have the refrigerant added as needed. At that time he indicated that the price would be around $418. I explained that I had purchased the Angies List coupon for $77 and was quite surprised at the price. He indicated that the coupon was not good for older system that use R22 refrigerant and that it was only good for newer systems using 410a refrigerant. I was a little concerned because no where on the coupon did it indicate this before I purchased it. He indicated that this was an issue but that he wanted to let me know this now before I proceeded further. So I felt that I was basically already out $77 because the tune-up was performed but now was stuck with 3 options going forward with South Hills Electric. I could either buy a new AC (expensive); purchase a replacement part for the coil (semi-expensive an almost puts you in a position you would rather just buy a new AC); or just charge the AC which was showing all indications that it was running hard and might need some refrigerant... but would now have to pay what they considered the market price for refrigerant due to supply and demand out there. With temperatures high in the 90's and humidity not exactly pleasant I was under the impression that charging the refrigerant for the very high price of $400 + was the only economical decision I had. I wrongly assumed this was the going price that other competitors were charging for R22 refrigerant and went forward and bit the bullet on this one. As it turns out... my AC needed barely over 1 lb of refrigerant and I paid the $400 to cool my home. I do realize that I was notified in advance of my options and that I could have sought quotes elsewhere. What bothers me is that the coupon did not indicate that older systems using R22 refrigerant would not be honored with the up to one pound refrigerant. If this was the case I certainly would not have purchased the coupon in the first place but rather called around and see who would service older systems and inquired about freon costs. I also understand that the government is phasing out the older systems and has policies in place to encourage home owners to replace their older units. I also understand that each company has factored this in and played with supply and demand to charge what I consider outrageous prices for R22 refrigerant. This is something a number of years ago would have cost me $50 or so a pound to charge and now was being charged a flat fee of $418 no matter how much or how little refrigerant I used. This was this companies decision to go this route and as I have found out some other companies are also taking advantage of this phase out and pricing their limited supplies of freon exorbitantly high. Not all companies do this and some smaller AC companies were still willing to work out price/ lb or willing to still replace freon at very reasonable prices until their inventory was gone. In other words some folks weren't putting consumers in a sort of no win situation. I apologize for the length of this review and partly the intent of this review is to inform folks to inquire with the company or others about these types of coupons so they are not misled in advance. I have no issues with the company from a professional stand point... they seem to have very good reviews (reason I considered their coupon in the first place) and their technician was informative and courteous while at my place. I also understand the principal of buyer beware which I seemed to fall victim to in this case with the coupon not clearly stating that older units would not be honored by the coupon for charging up to one pound of refrigerant. In retrospect, I should have called around about prices various companies were charging to re-charge units. My fault was I wasn't even aware of the government phase out of older R22 systems until my technician started to explain all this to me. Again, at that point I was already $77 in the hole for a coupon that really didn't provide me the benefit I was hoping for and in correctly stuck with the 3 options proposed to me. My recommendation is that Angies List and or the provider state that the coupon does not apply to older systems under their "Fine Print" section. Based on reviews of South Hills Electric it appears that they do good work and are generally reasonable. Given this I would hope moving forward they would be less than forthcoming with their coupons. It gives a taste of bait and switch. I realize I could have just bit the $77 and sought other quotes on R22 costs/ pound by other providers but was overwhelmed with being stuck with a home that wasn't cooling properly and being under the impression that this was the accepted market price out there for R22 refrigerant from most providers.
Description of Work: Purchased an Angies List coupon for $77 A/C Tune-Up and up to one pound of coolant. Ultimately South Hills Electric did a tune-up refilled A/C with a little over 1 pound of refrigerant.

Provider called us to confirm our appointment after we purchased the Angies List Big Deal. The scheduler informed us that the $849 was not all inclusive and may have additional fees upon an inspection. This came as a surprise as this was not mentioned on the details of the deal. He did mention that they knew that detail was not on the deal details, and if we did not want to use the voucher we would need to ask for a refund from Angies List. We decided to use them. The person who arrived was very professional. He identified some areas where there would need to be some work done and mentioned he would be unable to install the box until another appointment. He gave us his availability for the future installation. Upon the second installation, he was able to install the box is relatively short order. He did not track the notes on the old breaker as promised and was unable to re-transcribe which breakers went to which rooms on the box. Overall a positive experience, and we would use them again. I would just make sure that certain items promised are in writing and to call ahead on details of the deal before purchasing.
