About us

Pittsburgh Glass Block Company is part of the RGF Industries family of companies; we started growing in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania more than 40 years ago. It began with the mission of providing easily installed, fully-assembled glass block windows to the Western Pennsylvania market. As the industry grew and changed RGF moved with it, we now have 5 full service locations; Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Dayton, Buffalo and Rochester, serving the Midwest and the Northeast since 1965. We began with manufacturing glass block basement windows, and then developed fresh-air vinyl vents specifically designed for glass block windows. We now produce fully-assembled partition walls; glass block shower kits that include specially designed bases, and our new nail in place CrystaLok® vinyl framed glass block window for new construction applications. We also distribute individual glass blocks from the finest manufacturers worldwide, along with a range of installation products to make any project easy for the contractor or do-it-yourselfer. Our installation departments are capable of handling any application, from the largest commercial installation to residential basement windows. We have installed glass block products for more than 200,000 customers. We believe in producing, distributing and installing high quality products; but our job doesn’t end when the product leaves the factory; we provide the tools and the knowledge necessary to ensure our customer’s success .

The guys did arrive late due to traffic, but they got right to work, and were able to remove all 9 old windows and install the new ones that day. There was one piece (the aluminum cover for the exterior) that they did not have with them, so they had to come back a second day to install the covers, but the majority of work was done in one day. They were careful about covering the washer, dryer, etc. while working, and cleaned up very well once they were finished. Because my old windows had lead paint I had to pay an additional $20/window - nearly $200 total for all 9 windows - due to all the regulations on dealing with lead. Regulations are what they are, so I don't question that, but I did expect the men to wear masks, or hang plastic to contain the lead, or something. That did not happen, so while I'm sure the $200 covered some kind of additional work on their end, I'm not sure what it was. Either way, they did good work and I'm very happy with my new windows.
Description of Work: The windows in the basement of my 1924 Sears home were the original, so I had 9 new glass block windows (5 with vents) installed.

We originally got an estimate late last year (too late, we thought, to have the work done). When we were ready this year I contacted the company again to review our order and I wanted to see the vents that would be used in two windows before confirming the order. It was a week before the estimator returned my call and said he would check his schedule for an appointment. Another week passed with no appointment. We decided to visit the company showroom to review the vents and place our order. The office staff was very helpful. We looked at the vents available, selected the one we wanted to use, signed the contract and scheduled the work at that time. We were glad that we took the time to visit the showroom and get the job scheduled. We were given a 1-1/2 hour window for arrival for the installer, Tom. He was here within the first hour and immediately went about his preparations to do the work. He was very organized and efficient and spread protective covers where necessary. He completed the job in the estimated time frame and thoroughly cleaned up the mess upon completion. He willingly answered all my questions about the installation. We are very pleased with the completed work.

Contacted Pittsburgh Glass Block and they were out to the house within a week for the sales call. Very professional, low pressure. Work was done a week or so later... took about two hours. Left no mess, everything was perfect. I recommend these guys to everyone.

Our windows in the basement of our new house were all cracked and broken. We wanted to replaced them with glass block for security and better insulation. Bruce came to my house with glass block samples and measured all the windows. He showed me the differences between them all and encouraged me to get vents put in all the windows. Bruce quoted us at $1100, with $300 due up front and $800 due at the time of the work completion. He explained that the windows could not be installed unless it was above freezing and not raining. We sent in the contract during the week of Thanksgiving. Our concern was that the work would not get done before bad winter weather set in. We did not hear from them for about a week, but then I called in to check on the status and somebody called me back the next day to schedule the work for December 17. A winter weather advisory was predicted for that day, but when I called the day before, the secretary said that they were still planning to come and they did. The weather was not as bad as expected but still cold and damp. Two workers arrived to install the windows. Removing the windows was VERY loud and took a long time. They installed the glass block windows and even built up one of the window sills as it was several inches below the level of the driveway. They cleaned up pretty thoroughly, although I'm still finding small pieces of glass around the basement and the yard. The windows look fantastic. The picture doesn't really do justice to them; also the cement is still wet, it actually dried lighter than that. They removed the old dryer vent and left a new one to install in its place. I can't believe how much lighter and warmer my basement is now.

The initial installation date needed to be extended another 4 weeks because the installers showed up with windows that were built too large to fit our window openings due to incorrect measurements taken by the sales rep. While rescheduling with the main office, I was told the earliest appointment I could get was 4 weeks out but that she was sure they would be able to do it sooner. No effort was made to contact us to move up the 2nd installation date, so we waited patiently for 4 weeks for their 2nd attempt at installation. The day of the 2nd-scheduled installation, I had to call the office 3 times to find out if we were still on the schedule that day because it was 3:00 PM before the installers showed up. The installation itself did not take very long, thankfully, and the windows themselves were installed adequately. However, the installers did a very poor job cleaning up after themselves. A real mess of mortar was left on our front lawn where they mixed it, as well as in and around the windows. We also found several shards of glass from the old windows in our basement. We also found that they had used our small trash can in the basement to dump a large amount of debris, which had ripped through the plastic liner, and gave us yet another mess to clean up ourselves. While the windows were installed and look good, we would describe the overall experience as protracted and irritating.

It went very well. It took them less time than they said it would which made me really happy. One thing I didn't like was that they smoked on the job and being a non-smoker I didn't really like that. A professional also commented and told me it was one of the best jobs they have ever seen done.

Response from Pittsburgh Glass Block
In addition to installing glass block windows our contract included replacing a lintel (the metal piece above the window that carries the brick) which requires cutting mortar joints, removing some bricks and the old lintel and then installing the new lintel and replacing the bricks. This process requires grinding out the old mortar and creates a large amount of dust, outside of the house. Our customer was warned of this in advance and asked to close windows and cover anything that might be damaged by cement dust. After the job was completed the customer called to complain about the dust, as a courtesy we offered to credit her $25 or to have someone stop by to do some clean-up. She opted for the latter and we sent someone out. We didn't hear back from the customer and were not aware or her dissatisfaction until we received this report from Angie's List. We do not recognize Angie's List as a moderator between us and our customers and would request that this customer call us directly or file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

THE WORKERS WHO INSTALLED THE WINDOWS WERE EXCELLENT; EXPERTLY SKILLED, VERY NICE, PROFESSIONAL, THEY DID A GREAT JOB. THE SALESMAN/REP WHO FIRST CAME TO SPEC THE JOB WAS AWFUL, NEVER CALLED ME BACK, EVEN WHEN I LEFT SEVERAL MESSAGES AND FINALLY HAD TO CALL HIS SUPERVISOR. ONCE WE HAD A SCHEDULED DAY (TWO MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST VISIT) THEY CANCELLED THE MORNING OF THAT DAY; SENT THE WORKERS TO A DIFFERENT JOB FOR NO CLEAR REASON. THE OFFICE MANAGERS WHO WE DEALT WITH ON THE PHONE WERE ALSO AWFUL, NOT AT ALL APOLOGETIC (WE HAD SCHEDULED TO STAY HOME FROM WORK TO BE THERE), AND VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. HENCE THE MIXED REPORT: THE WORKERS WERE TERRIFIC, THE JOB WELL DONE (FINALLY) BUT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WITH REPS AND MANAGEMENT AND INCONVENIENCE AND IMPOSSIBLE SCHEDULING WAS HORRENDOUS. BUT WHO ELSE DOES GLASS BLOCK? THEY SEEM TO HAVE A MONOPOLY.

IN HOME SERVICE WAS GOOD FROM THE ESTIMATION VISIT TO THE INSTALLATION. BUSINESS OPERATIONS, HOWEVER, WERE DISAPPOINTING. FIRST VOICE MAIL MESSAGE WAS UNRETURNED; DATES REQUESTED AT ESTIMATION VISIT WERE NOT PASSED ON TO SCHEDULERS AND THEN COULD NOT BE MET FORCING ME TO READJUST SCHEDULE FOR INSTALLATION. ADDITIONAL E-MAIL REQUEST WAS NOT RESPONDED TO. PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS AT ESTIMATION VISIT WERE TO CHARGE BOTH DEPOSIT AND FINAL PAYMENT TO CREDIT CARD--AGAIN THIS WASN'T COMMUNICATED. WHEN I PHONED THE FOLLOWING DAY TO CORRECT, IT SEEMED AS IF I WERE BLAMED FOR THEIR MISCOMMUNICATION. BOTTOM LINE: FIELD STAFF WAS GOOD BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE A DISCONNECT WITH THE OFFICE COMMUNICATIONS.
