Metro Heating & Cooling is a family owned and operated company. We have been serving the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas since 1957, when William “W.C.” Wessner Sr founded the company. We are now on our 3rd generation.
The company has maintained key staff, and thanks to our installers and service technicians, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years, keeping the quality and reputation of our work and company intact.
We have been a top provider on Angie’s List since 2005 and one of the top Carrier dealers in the Pittsburgh area.
The Wessner’s are active in Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and they have all served as president of that group.
Air conditioner was not working, called them and they were able to come out the next day.

They worked very quickly. They were very polite. I think that they are very good. I have used them since this fall three times. I have a maintenance contract with them and they will not raise the price. You don't have to call them for the cleaning and maintenance, they will call you.
Description of Work: They cleaned the furnace in sixteen different steps. It was a very thorough cleaning and maintenance job.

Update to complaint below - After several issues with the systems - long story short is that Tom at Metro got his head around the problem, realized that Metro 's part supplier and maybe a couple of other things were at fault and he replaced one of the units top to bottom with a brand new unit and fixed the leak in the other unit. That's what I would have expected. YEs it took a bit more prodding from me than I would have liked - BUT - Tom and Metro fixed things and made good and I would now recommend them again. original report: After narrowing down to 3 or 4 contractors to meet with and get estimates from, I settled finally on 2. The other company was significantly cheaper, but when speaking to the fellow, he seemed rushed and didn't stress that he'd use care in knocking around my old house, using certain techniques to eliminate the need for more hole making, etc. I also didn't feel like he gave me quite as many options regarding tonnage or environmental concerns. In retrospect, I probably could have asked for a second follow up consultation and gotten more answers. I instead opted to go with Metro because the older guy named Bill was very nice and seemed very concerned about caring for my house. He would need to break open a wall at two spots but promised to build a door from wainscoting for me. He also listened intently to some of my concerns about how the vents appeared and where they showed up and promised me do things with my wishes in mind. His estimate was significantly higher than the other company s, but I felt I was buying better quality and service and that in the end I'd be happier. I was wrong. He promptly forgot most of what he had promised me. The area in the downstairs unit where we had agreed to place the large return vent in the floor was ignored, and he cut the hardwood in the middle of a walkway rather than do a little extra work in the basement to reroute. I had to pay a floor guy to fix it AFTER Metro moved it and fixed" it. He left gaping holes in the walls in the basement where he had promised to patch. They tore out shrubs and bushes without even having discussed it or asked, in order to place the outdoor units in a slightly different spot than we had discussed, and then left the shrubs on my front lawn for days. I had to deal with the large shrubs myself. They put a thermostat on a wall that I had NOT ok'd and had to tell them to move it to where we had discussed putting it even though it was a little more work. They then left holes and putty patches in multiple places. They left dirt and grease hand prints on my walls and probably about 10 other negatives. I felt taken, overcharged, under-serviced and very, very bad about the experience and the company. Bill took a list of things that I needed to have fixed when he was at my home on the 'last day' of the job. He walked away and promised to have them taken care of a.s.a.p. More than a month and a half went by and I stopped into Metro one morning on my way to town. Bill, his brother and some other workers were there and I asked Bill WHEN he planned to fix the items we had discussed. "What items?" Bill asked. Wow. What a terrible experience I had with Metro. They came and fixed the stuff in a slipshod way and I now wash my hands of that company. I won't have them do any out-of-warranty repairs either. The equipment works, I like it, but I was overcharged for bad service and didn t get the high end, A list service that I thought I was buying.
Description of Work: I have a duplex with radiators (hot water heating) and wanted central air to be installed in both units, a total of about 3000 sq feet. This requires flexible ductwork to be fished through tricky knee walls, floors and ceilings as well as an air handler both in the basement and the attic crawlspace.

Metro was FANTASTIC! From the first contact they were prompt, reliable and true to their word. The project took 5 work days. They arrived on time, left the place in (basically) the same shape they found it, worked around our pets, left nary a spec of dust when they were done for the day, which is no small feat given they had to install numerous new vents through our plaster ceilings and fit ductwork into a couple closets. Bill Wessner was on the job to ensure it was done as discussed, and the actual installers couldn't have been more pleasant and respectful. I also found them all to be very laid back and yet extremely thorough and professional. They did a good job putting us to ease with a project that was, initially, beyond the scope of our imaginations! Bill also produced a list of references for projects like ours that was PAGES AND PAGES long. It seemed like he'd done every house on some blocks. They finished two days ahead of schedule and we HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Description of Work: Installed two-stage forced-air furnace and air-conditioning into older hot-water-heated home. (In order to accommodate planned home addition). Removed old cast iron radiators and retro-fitted ductwork into ten rooms using only a foot of space in two closets. Installed separate furnace for finished basement. Installed ductwork/vent to heat underside of previous kitchen expansion which had cold floors/pipes freezing due to fact that there is only a crawl space.

The furnace fan broke this past Saturday. Although it was very cold, we had to turn the heat off. I found Metro on Angie's List. They returned the call promptly an arrived within 1 hour of the original call. Unfortunately, the fan had to be replaced and the part could not be found until Monday, but the technician spent almost 3 hours trying to piece together what we had so that it might work until Monday. It didn't work but I admire his work ethic and compassion for us not having any heat. Metro sent a technician back early Monday morning with the part and they finished the repair. In fact, they discovered the part was covered under warranty and only charged us for the labor. I should mention, that because of the extreme cold some of our water pipes burst and the technician helped me locate and shut off the water valves. Later that same day I had some concerns about the thermostat, the technician came back that same tonight to double check and make sure everything was working okay.
Description of Work: Furnace fan broke and heat had to be turned off. Technician discovered the inducer assembly was bad. Metro replaced and installed inducer assembly.

Excellent. Tom Wessner estimated and laid out the job explaining what would be done and how the job would proceed. He promptly submitted an estimate and various means of how payment could be handled. There turned out to be no hidden charges and everything went just as was explained to me in person and on the estimate. The workmen were first rate, showed up promptly each day, and created a minimum of dirt. All were polite and helpful. I would have no hesitation recommending this company. Mr. Wessner also has been easy to access and helpful in our conversations about the job.
Description of Work: Metro installed a Buderus high efficiency boiler coupled with a Buderus hot water supply combination. They also added whole house air conditioning and additionally raised the hot water supply and return pipes in the basement allowing more overhead clearance. They also replaced the control valves on all of my homes radiators.

We were thrilled and relieved that a technician came within 40 minutes after I called to report the furnace failure. First he asked some questions over the phone to see if the problem was simple enough for us to solve by ourselves; when it wasn't, he came over immediately and was very patient and deliberate in diagnosing the problem. He didn't have a replacement gas valve & circulator pump on him (it was night), so he returned the next morning. Not only did he do the installation and check to make sure it worked, but he painstakingly made sure that all of our radiators (3 floors) were bled afterwards. He was also extremely respectful of the house: he took off his shoes that had ice/salt on them. Because he was going up & down 3 flights of stairs all the time, it completely eliminated what would have been quite a job on our floors!
Description of Work: Emergency call when furnace failed on a cold night. Replaced circulator pump and gas valve on a 27-year-old furnace (gas/radiator heat).

Several weeks ago I had Metro Heating come to service my furnace/boiler system because of loud whistling noises. At that time the service tech diagnosed faulty gas valves due to the line pressure being too high. It took 3 weeks for the new valves to come in. The service tech replaced both valves and then told me that I could not use my furnace because I would have to have the gas company come and lower the pressure. The gas company service tech measured the line pressure and it was within normal limits. In the process of turning the gas appliances back on, we discovered that the Metro Heating service tech had turned both the electrical power and the water to the furnaces off. When we turned them back on, the furnace/boiler system was broken. I had to call another company in to repair the system, repairs that took the second company 4 hours to repair the system that the Metro Heating personnel broke.

Bill threw us for a bit of a loop when he showed up about 20 minutes early for his estimate and I wasn't home from work yet. However, he was friendly and professional once I got there. Their bid was tied for lowest with another contractor, but they included most of the "extras" in their bid, whereas the other contractor didn't. They had to reschedule the installation once, because they got too many emergency (no heat) calls on the originally scheduled day, and our old boiler was still working, so we agreed to reschedule. On the new day the crew showed up on time and was neat and professional. They were careful to take off their shoes when going into the main part of the house, and cleaned up well after they were done. There was one glitch (their work order specified a non-programmable thermostat, but we had asked for a programmable model), but they agreed to remedy it at no charge when it was pointed out. The crew finished in record time (5 hours) and the new boiler works great.

Mr. Bill Wessner came and surveyed the house and sent us a proposal within a week. It included different models ranging from 80% efficiency cast iron to 96% efficiency condensing boiler. We chose the 96% eff. boiler because we believe it will pay off in the long run. Job went exceptionally well. It took a crew of two four days to complete the job. They cleaned up well after the job is done. There is some minor leak in the exhaust which Tom promptly is arranging to have it fixed. Overall we are very satisfied with the job.
Description of Work: Metro removed a 30+ years old boiler and 15+ years old water heater and installed a state-of-the-art Buderus GB142 boiler and Ergomax E23 indirect heat water heater. Job included all required plumbing and routing exhaust to the side of the house with PVC pipes.

Tom spoke to me immediately when I called to schedule an appointment for an estimate. I originally wanted to just replace the old furnance in the rental unit, however, the price was so reasonable that I asked Tom for an estimate on the furnance in my residence and he came in with a great deal. He even got me 1 year interest free financing from a financing institute. The installers were prompt, efficient, and took out two old furnances, installed some duct-work and two new furnances in 2 days. I will use Metro for all me Heating/Cooling and Water Heater needs in the future.

EXCELLENT! I reccomend Metro to anyone looking for excellent service. Tom Wessner returned my call onthe same day, came over the next to give me a proposal. Originally, I was considering to replace my furnace and add whole house aircondioning. My house a two story over a basement has a little over 900 square feet. Tom suggested window air conditioning as being a more practical and cost saving solution. I took that advice and am very happy about it. Tom also listened to my concerns about furnace noise and made reccomendations about relocating and ductwork with a new Infinity furnace. Two days after awarding the contract to Metro, Bob and Bob showed up for the installation. You could not ask for more personable and excellent craftsmen. When the work was completed my house was as neat as it was before the job was started. My wife said that we have had many repairmen, contactors and servicemen over 40 years doing work in this house, but never any that were so neat.
Description of Work: Replaced exsisting furnace with carrier infinity furnace. Relocated furnace and return ductwork. Also installed additional return ductwork. Old furnace worked fine but was very noisy (could not hear tv when blower was on). New furnace is extremely quiet. A flue liner was installed down the chimney for the furnace and water heater. Also patched floor in living room where cold air return opening was reduced in size.

I was very pleased with Metro Heating and Cooling and fully understand why it is top-rated in this category. Prior to calling Metro (and joining Angie's List), I received a bid from another A/C company. The other company gave me a ballpark estimate of $12,500 to $15,000 for central air and quoted me approximately $7,000 just to cool the downstairs using a ductless minsplit system with two air handlers. Bill Wessner from Metro told me I needed only one mini-split to cool the downstairs area, which he could install for $3,000 but more importantly, he convinced me that a mini-split system was not a good application for my space and that it made long-term sense to install central air. The Metro crew showed up promptly and left my house in the same or better condition than they found it -- at the end of each work day, a visitor to the house would have no way of knowing that a major project was underway. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Installed central air (2.5 tons) in 1,500 square foot home with radiator heat.
