Metro Heating & Cooling is a family owned and operated company. We have been serving the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas since 1957, when William “W.C.” Wessner Sr founded the company. We are now on our 3rd generation.
The company has maintained key staff, and thanks to our installers and service technicians, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years, keeping the quality and reputation of our work and company intact.
We have been a top provider on Angie’s List since 2005 and one of the top Carrier dealers in the Pittsburgh area.
The Wessner’s are active in Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and they have all served as president of that group.
I had used this company last year for the same problem. Like last year the Tech cleaned the drain and reconfigured the drain hose and outlet and alerted me to the fact that the condenser was freezing up. This did not solve the problem and another company was called to resolve the issue. The problem was not fixed and the leak recurred almost immediately. Unfortunately, the focus of the repair was on the drain and not the A/C system. Another company was called and a complete A/C check-up resulted in the replacement of the 30+ year old unit.
Description of Work: Recurring leak from the A/C unit caused damage to the unit below mine.

A year ago Metro installed two new air conditioning systems in our 4-story house. That whole experience went well. This spring, the upper unit failed. We called Metro and they diagnosed it as a leak in the coolant. To locate the leak they filled the system with dye-colored freon, which would make the leak visible. Eventually that dye-colored stuff would leak out and leave a trace and the system would fail again .That would enable them to repair the leak. So earlier this week, when temperatures reached 100 degrees, the system failed as predicted. We called Metro and they agreed to send a repairman the very next day. Since we were still under waranty at the time of the original problem, we were expecting to pay only 50% of the cost of the new freon. T he repairman, Jim, was a very polite, considerate and competent professional. He discovered that running on low freon had, in fact, damaged the compressor, and that it would be necessary to replace the compressor. He managed to have one delivered in a couple of hours and he installed it and re-filled the unit with refrigerant. When all was said and done, he told me that we owed them absolutely nothing! Because the compressor was under warranty, the replacement of the freon was all under the warranty. I was kind of speechless. When was that last time that a serviceman came to your house and worked for 8 hours and told you at the end that you owed them 0?
Description of Work: They repaired a leak in our air conditioning unit and ultimately replaced the compressor.

After several HVAC companies indicated that we needed a new furnace, all of which were happy to install one for us, Metro educated us about why we didn't need a new furnace. In fact, none of the variety of problems brought up by the three other companies showed up during an inspection with Metro, even after prompting. Ironically, none of the other three companies were even consistent in what was really wrong with our furnace! In the end, Metro didn't just save us money, but they helped us to understand why our furnace wasn't the problem every other company said it was. I can't thank Metro enough for their honesty and integrity, and they are the only company to whom I now refer all of my HVAC clients.
Description of Work: Metro evaluated our furnace to determine whether we were in need of a new one. Several other HVAC companies had indicated that we needed a replacement. Metro did a multi-point inspection of our furnace, covering everything from top to bottom very thoroughly.

Could not have gone more smooth and quick. The furnaces were installed, they did a great job and heat was restored to the house. The quote was very fair and came in on-budget for two furnaces.
Description of Work: On inspection of purchasing a house with 2-zone heating, we found that the existing furnaces were ill-performing and were 'red-tagged' leaving no heat in the house. Metro was able expeditiously to replace the furnaces with highly efficient furnaces right away and at a very fair price.

We have two airconditioning units at our house. One was repaired for leaking freon by another heating and airconditioning company and the other was checked and deemed to be operationg properly. However, the upper living area of our house was not maintaining temperature when it was hot outside. Even thought the thermostat was set for 78, the temperature continued to climb well into the 80s while the air conditioner ran continuously. On Friday morning, May 25, I called a couple of heating and air conditioning repair companies that I found on Angie's List. No one could come that day and most could not come for at least a week. This was problematic for me, as I had out of town guests coming to stay for a week....one of whom was a month old baby.......and a weather forecast predicting temperatures in the 90s. When I called Metro, I was initially told that a technician could be at my house on Tuesday. I explained the situation and asked that if there were any cancellations that day, to please call. A short time later, Metro called back. The woman I had spoken to told me that she looked at their schedule for the day and found that a technician was going to be servicing a house about a half a mile away from mine. She asked if it would be convenient for him to stop by that morning when he finished the other service call.He was at my home around 10 that morning and thoroughly inspected my air conditioners for coolant, filters, etc. He thoroughly cleaned the outside units. He said that all was well and he saw no reason for the upper area of our house to not cool down with the air conditioner on. When he left, the upstairs temperature was 74 and I was hopeful that it would remain at 74 .Around 3 o'clock that afternoon, I went upstairs to check on the temperature. Unfortunately, it was 77 although it was set for 74! I called Metro. The owner called me back and said that he spoke to the technician and everything was in good working area. I told him that a one month old would be staying there and I was concerned....and confused as to why it wasn't staying cool. He asked if he could come over and check it out on his way home that day (on a Friday....before the Memorial Day weekend). After checking out the second floor living area, he said that he and the technician felt that the system, although working correctly, was not installed correctly. The return airducts and the ducts bringing the cool air were not located properly. There also were not enough registers. In the short term, he suggested that we keep our ceiling fans running, turn the whole house fan on, and keep some of the bedroom doors open to promote better circulation. (That did the trick!) Longterm, he said that an attic fan would be helpful and a rerouting of some of the ductwork would also be a possible solution. We were very impressed by Metro's excellent customer service. It exceeded anything we could have hoped for on such short notice...especially on a Friday before a holiday weekend! Everyone that we came in contact with at Metro was exceptional. Very knowledgeable and professional. I would highly recommend them and will definitely use them again.

The work was done quickly and, as far as I can tell, thoroughly. The quote came with a some recommendations and a variety of options, and without pressure or too sales-y behavior. Very professional and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: We called Metro because the A/C didn't work. It turned out that the air inflow was clogged with lint from our dryer (air duct too close to the A/C). The technician cleaned the A/C and then diagnosed that the compressor was damaged (still works, but is likely to die soon). I got a quote for replacement.

I had purchased the deal for the inspection and cleaning and discovered my furnace had many many cracks in it. Once I realized it would need to be replaced, I explained that I had a home warranty from selling my house and I would need to use a company on thier list. Despite knowing that Metro would probably not get the business as they are not on the warranty list, he still took the time to explain where all the cracks were and what had caused them and gave me a quote for a new furnace if I did decide to use them in the future. I really appreciated the information.

I turned on our AC system this year and it would not cool. I let the system run overnight and it did not budge the thermostat at all. The system appeared to be operating correctly it simply would not blow cold air. I didn't fret, I quickly called Metro Heating and Cooling and they promised to have a technician out to my house on Friday as I requested. I have used Metro several times in the past and previously had great experiences. Unfortunately this was not the case this time. The technician arrived at my house during the agreed upon time frame. He asked that I quickly describe the situation. Then he went down stairs and very quickly inspected the furnace, cooling lines and the condenser unit outside. He said he would need to hook up his gauges to the lines in order to take a reading. When he hooked up his equipment he found that the system experienced a freon leak and was very low on R-22 freon. This is where things took a turn for the worse. The tech told me that in order to test for leaks and recharge the system I would have to agree to pay $1400. He further stated that he would not recommend that I put that amount of money into a system that is 15 to 17 years old and strongly recommended that I spend $4500 to replace the entire cooling system. Perplexed I asked him to step me through the $1400 quote. He said that would include draining the lines of any remaining Freon, charging the system with nitrogen to find the leak, repairing the leak, vacuuming the system and then recharging with R-22 Freon. He went on to say that if the leak were in the A-Coil I would be looking at substantially more then $1400 as he would have to get the part and replace it. The A-Coil is located inside the shaft directly above the heat chamber in the furnace. When I pressed the technician about the charges he gave me a line about R-22 Freon being really expensive. I asked how much they intended to charge and he said $100 for the first pound of R-22 Freon and $90 for each additional pound. Seeing that I needed 9 pounds of Freon that would be $820 in Freon Charges. I knew this didn't sound right as the cost of R-22 Freon per pound is roughly $12 to $15 depending on where and how much you buy. I expressed concern about the Freon charge stating that this was a roughly 600% mark up and is what I would consider to be a ridiculous charge. The technician continued to badger me about the price stating that Freon was expensive and that the charge was fair. He even went on to say if I could show him where to buy Freon at the price I found he would go there and buy it. This is downright deceitful as he is likely buying supplies from the same place I would be? I told the technician that I would think about it and get back to him. Needless to say I went with another provider who was able to perform all of the work above and replace my A-Coil for $950. I couldn't be more disappointed with Metro Heating and Cooling? The amount of troubleshooting done by the technician wasn't even worth the service call charge. This was a glorified sales call which should have been free. The technician strongly pushed for me to install a totally new system when mine could very easily be repaired for a fraction of the cost. I'm very disappointed and will not use them again. Do yourself a favor and get a quote from someone else.
Description of Work: Metro technician quickly visually inspected my furnace and cooling lines. The technician measured the pressure on the cooling system to determine how much freon (R-22) was in the system.

The tech was very nice and explained in detail the work he was performing. The appointment went very well and as I was "interviewing" new companies as my old HVAC was raking me over the coals money wise. So, I bought an extended care plan and will be seeing how things go this year as to if I will continue with them. This is not meant to sound negative by any means, but I have been burnt in the past and I am cautiously optimistic about Metro and will give updates as the year goes on.

If you have an old house with hot water heat and think you can't also enjoy the luxury of central air - call Metro. I never thought they'd be able to install ductwork for AC in our older house but they did it! The guys were amazing, they mapped out the best place to run the ductwork so it wasn't intrusive or even visible in some cases and we now have the most amazing central air system - this is the best thing we ever did to our house. The installers were very neat and clean and left virtually no evidence they had been there, they took everything out of closets where they needed access and put it all back exactly as they had found it. For such a big job, this was truly remarkable. Every time I walk into our nice cool house on a hot day, I want to call Metro and thank them. It was a lot of money, but we have never regretted it for a second!
Description of Work: We had used Metro in the past to install a new boiler and were very pleased with their work so we called them when we decided to invest in central air for our older home, not knowing if it was even possible with radiators. They made it happen!

Simon from Metro came out to perform a furnace check-up that I purchased from Angie's List. He arrived on time and was very professional during the entire inspection. The check-up matched the description of the service, and was quite thorough. Given that we have never had this furnace serviced as newer homeowners, I had a lot of questions. Simon was patient and answered all of them, and made sure to explain what he was doing. The humidifier system on the furnace ended up having a bad solenoid, which I asked Simon to replace at what I felt was a very reasonable price ($200.00). He was not at all pushy about his company doing the work, and he tried several times to see if the old unit was just stuck and could be unfrozen. Overall, this was a very good experience, and I plan to use Metro for all of our future HVAC needs.
