+ -1 moreSince nothing happened except a series of phone tag exchanges, I would say this has been a very bad experience. The coupon is now expired, but I haven't seen any commitment to follow through on this deal anyway. Since the coupon is worded such that no work was likely to be done, only a check to see if there was further work needed, I'm surprised that the contractor was not interested in following through on this. The $149 lost can't be worth receiving such a long series of negative reviews.
Description of Work: Bought the coupon for a roof repair service. Similar to other experiences on this website, received a message that nothing would happen until temperatures warmed up, then received a call that they would like to come around in May. Not a good time for me, but when I tried to get back in touch could not get a response. So is it fair that I should be out the $149? Is Angie's List liable in this as well since they marketed this contractor as reliable? I'm really disappointed, and likely to stop purchasing these "deals" on Angies List.

+ -1 moreAs far as the roof itself, Jim and crew did an excellent job. They worked very hard and ended up putting more labor into the job without charging, such as replacing more decking (we paid for the extra wood). They cleaned up well when considering the mess the project causes. The quality of the roof and underlayment is very good. Jim is not good at communication. He was difficult to reach for first contact and this problem continued throughout. There were additional jobs he was to perform for us (inside and outside of the house) which he said he would quote on. After the roof was complete, it was as though he disappeared. The gutters clogged due to leftover material from the old roof removal and the attic fan seemed to not be functioning correctly. We made at least 4 calls/emails with no response. The last time we tried he answered and said he would get right back to us but never did. Although he did a great job on the roof, the fact that he would not communicate afterward after saying he would do the additional jobs we had was very disappointing. We delayed getting these jobs done while waiting for his response and this has caused us further difficulties. We feel we can no longer trust J. P. May Contracting and will not recommend him to anyone.

+ -1 moreAt this point, I would like my money returned or applied to a more reliable contractor. Very disappointed in both Angie's List and J.P. May Construction.
Description of Work: A Big Deal was purchased January 2013. The contractor phoned me shortly thereafter to say that the service would be provided once the weather broke and they would be able to go on the roof for an inspection and report. I contacted J.P. May Construction multiple times to set a date and was finally able to reach someone. I called Angie's List to complain and there was no resolution. Contact was finally made with J.P. May Construction and a date was set two times; no call, no show.

+ -1 moreAfter purchasing the Big Deal I received a call stating that they would not be doing any work until the temperature was consistently over 40 degrees and it is not raining. Have tried multiple times since the weather warmed to contact him and get no response and always get a "message box full" instead of being able to leave a message. The only time i did get an answer was when I tried calling from my work line and he thought it was the doctors office. If his ability to answer a phone or call people back who have paid for a service in indicative of his ability to work on a roof, then I will have to pass every time.

Description of Work: I bought the certificate to have my roof inspected and minor repairs made in January. I sent an email to the provider requesting an appointment and received a voicemail response saying they weren't scheduling appointments until the weather was nicer. 6 months, three emails, and a discussion with Angie's List customer service and I still haven't heard anything. The coupon expires in a month but I wouldn't let anyone with this type of response rate anywhere near my house.

Mr. May always answered his phone and promised to either have himself or his wife get back to me to schedule a time. To this date this has never occurred. I contacted him this morning and he told me he was driving and on his way to a work site and would call me back in 5 minutes. That was over two hours ago. I can honestly say that this "Big Deal" was a bust and I'm probably out the $149 since I have no intentions of contacting Mr. May again and even if he found something wrong with my roof (which I know there is) I would not want him working on it based upon this experience. Very disappointing.

+ 1 moreWanted to extend a tile floor from the entry area into a hallway, into the kitchen and partially into a family room. That included a lot of little details such as replacing trim, installing door sweeps, etc. Jim's crew came up with the idea to cut tile to use as the trim/baseboard under the kitchen cabinets, which looks awesome, instead of the wood trim that was there. In addition, Jim and his crew installed new kitchen appliances, which arrived right after the floor tile was complete. Jim hooked up water line from basement to fridge as well. Also, he created floor transition/threshhold pieces from some of the hardwood boards I had left over. The floor tile and trim look fantastic. Jim's crew was very nice and personable. They were great to deal with and have good personalities. They did solid work. They were respectful to not let any of our pets escape through open doors. Also, they fixed our screen door so it wouldn't slam shut instantly when you left go of it. I hired JP May Construction to refinish a living room/dining room hardwood floors. I was so pleased with that, I had them refinish all of our hardwood floors upstairs. That went so well, I hired them to handle this tile floor project. And, I hired them to renovate a bathroom. Jim and his crew are busy guys, but they took some time to come out on the weekends to finish up whenever needed.

He didn't show up again but called 10 mins before the scheduled time to tell us that the rain was preventing him from coming. This whole past week since the rain has stopped he has not called or communicated. Finally, we emailed him but he declined the time suggested. We are not going forward with this Big Deal.

Description of Work: James May provided me photos of the roof and an online of estimated costs to complete the work involved. He was able to start the job earlier than expected. He completed the job in 2 days and spoke with me when there were problems encountered that were not expected during the job. He completely removed 2 layers of roofing and corrected problems as well as replacing old sky lights. He cleaned up the area when he had completed his work. He and his helper were courteous and diligent in their work.

Description of Work: I am on Angieslist to find a professional floor refinisher. I initially contacted Mr May on March 21st via email through angieslist. I did not receive a response so I contacted him via phone. He was pleasant during this call and we agreed to an estimate at my home on April 4th at 7pm. I specifically made it after Easter as I was having guests over. On Thursday March 28th, Mr May called me at 8pm in a panic and said he is at the home of another client and will not make it to my home for the estimate. I thought this was odd and I reminded him that the appointment is on April 4th. We again agreed to meet at my home on April 4th at 7pm. On April 4th, Mr May did not show up. I called him at 7:40pm and left a polite message. I called again at around 8:20pm and left another messsage. I never heard back from him. I remembered when we iniitally spoke he mentioned that he had a new baby. I thought that perhaps there was some type of emergency so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I called him this past weekend and again left a message with no repsonse. I decided today to try one more time. Mr May is highly recommended on angieslist and I was willing to overlook the past few slights as he lives in my area. Mr May answered his phone and as I was identifying myself, the phone went dead. I waited 20 minutes with no return call. I was upset at this point. I called one last time and spoke with him. The treatment thaI I received on this call is nothing less than baffling. He did not seem to know that we spoke previously several times nor would he admit that we had an appointment. He did eventually remember; however, that he called me on the wrong day. He finally said "so I missed an appt, so what?!" He chided me for not getting estimates from other contractors. He actually sees nothing wrong with no call, no show for an appt with no explanation. The man could not have been more unprofessional right from the start. His handling of the situation was terrible and he cannot understand why I'm upset. I'm now back to square one and lost over 3 weeks waiting to hear from him.

+ -1 moreI used him through a big deal on Angie's List. He was very nice and a very good worker. I guess he didn’t know the product well enough; he gave me a couple of extra bills at the end. But I would rate him good though. I think it was just the floor that he wasn’t used to. I probably would recommend him. He had a lot of problems with my house. I just had some strange circumstances, but I think if I had a more normal floor to start with, he would have done an excellent job. With regard to price, I thought he was fair, but then he kind of added on as we went along. I probably would use him again in the future.
