+ -1 moreWe noticed the smell of smoke in our laundry room when we had a fire in our fire place. We had used Chimney Cricket to sweep our chimney in the past so we called them to ask if they would come and take a look and see if they could determine what was causing the smell. They came the same day and found that the vent pipe for the hot water shared the same flue as the fireplace. They provided the quote to relocate the vent for the tank and also to repaire some crumbling cement around the crown at the top of our chimney. We agreed to the price and asked that they do the work as soon as possible. They ordered the part that day and came four days later to perform the repairs. The whole fix took approximately two hours. Everything has been perfect since the work was completed.
Description of Work: Redirect of our hot water tank vent into a separate chimney flue (which was within the same flue as the fireplace), including installation of a new liner, as well as repair of the crown at the top of the chimney which had crumbling cement.

He also informed us he does not have his on scaffolding (which would be necessary for our repairs), and having to rent it would approximately double the cost. We did not have this contractor do the repairs (yet) and are currently seeking other bids before making a final decision. He may still end up getting the job, depending on how things go with other providers.

+ -1 moreI called on Thursday and was told they could be here on Saturday between 12:30 and 1pm. They arrived at 12:10pm, which was fine because they came from the other side of town and it is tough to judge traffic sometimes. They immediately examined the fireplaces, responded to my questions and explained what needed to be done. I agreed, and they immediately began to work. As noted before,it was done efficiently with very little disruption. There was no issue with dirt or soot. They also examined the brick chimney and the metal chimney. Both require future work (one has not been touched in 30 years and the other in 20 years) which was explained. I have contracted them to do that work as well. I rate it is a good experience.
Description of Work: Two fireplaces were cleaned, new motar applied to the inside of one of the fireplaces and two caps installed. Also, a gas pipe inside the one of the fireplaces was replaced as well at my request. Everything was explained prior to the work performed and the work was done efficiently with very little disturbance to the house.

+ -1 moreTwo years ago a chimney sweep gave me and estimate of $5000 to repair our fireplace. After 36 years of the pleasure of a fire in the winter, we chose to eliminate the use of our fireplace. When we lost our power earlier this month, we regretted having no heat alternative, so when our power returned that Friday, we checked Angie's List, called Chinmey Cricket, and got an appointment for Monday. Saturday they called and said they were in the neighborhood and would we like them to come now. I was thrilled. They covered our carpeting, checked the fireplace, cleaned it and put the cap on the chimney and charged us $250. Amazing, huh?
Description of Work: Our fireplace was checked and cleaned and a cap was put on the chimney to avoid water entering when it rains.

+ -1 moreAlthough the actual cleaning proceeded uneventfully, I noticed that when they removed the existing multi-flue cap from one of the chimneys, they removed the entire housing (glued to the chimney) rather than simply unscrewing the lid. They failed to remount the cap securely, and, as a result, the cap blew off in a storm sometime in January, 2013. Although my wife heard something hit the roof at that time, we did not realize the cap had blown off until yesterday, when I noticed it sitting on the roof. I think it must have fallen originally in a location that was not easily visible from the house, and later migrated to a place where I was able to see it from an upstairs window.

Kemin was pleasant and helpful, and advised me on some issues with gas fireplace installation. Cleaning took about 30 minutes. I would not hesitate to use them again, highly recommended!

+ 1 moreIt was great. Ken and his crew were clean, efficient, and friendly to talk to. They brought in large drapes to cover the carpet area and special machines to remove the debris from the chimney flues. They first used a flashlight to visually show me the condition of the fireplace flue. Then, they cleaned everything (including the clean-out and firebox. After they were finished, Ken explained the status of the Chimney caps, and how to use the firebox in the fireplace and the damper effectively. Then, they removed all the drapes and debris from the house. The crew worked very fast, but was not bothered to answer my questions when I had them. From the time I called, Ken was at my house within 3 days. He was able to provide an estimate over the phone that was within $10.00 of the actual price..
Description of Work: Chimney Cricket Performed a complete cleaning of my masonry chimney including one fireplace and a combined gas water heater/gas furnace chimney. They removed all creosote and debris buildup, inspected the linings of the chimney, and reported on the status of the chimney caps as well.

+ -1 moreWhen I called to schedule the chimney sweeping appointment the person I spoke to was very responsive and scheduled an appointment within a few days. Two people came to perform the work and were clearly experienced. They kept the area clean as they worked and completed the work quickly. I was informed that while the fireplace isn't in great shape the fact that there's a thicker brick wall behind it means I could choose concrete to repair it rather than rebuilding. I asked about other repairs and they did not try to upsell anything. He explained how to use our fireplace safely.

We are very pleased with Chimney Cricket and the three men who worked on our job. Price was very reasonable, and service outstanding. Quote for new ventless unit has already been agreed upon in writing, per their usual business practice.
Description of Work: Gas log fireplace had not been used for a number of years because of gas smell when pilot light would blow out in high winds. Gas valve was turned off. Burner system and logs are 20 years old. Fireplace and flu needed repair and cleaning. Because of a personal medical procedure rescheduling I called and said that Friday, December 7th would not work because of the time of the medical procedure. Immediate response was, " Would tomorrow ( Saturday) at 2 pm work" for me? We agreed. Chimney Cricket showed up promptly, repaired and cleaned the fireplace and burner unit. In less than an hour the job was done in a professional manner, and family room was spotless after their cleanup.

Description of Work: We called to have our chimney swept and inspected before we did some refacing to it inside. I was given a discount fore being on Angie's List of $30 off the cleaning service and then when they came, the found that our damper was broken and would not close. They cleaned the chimney, wedge open the old damper permanently and installed a new one on the chimney cap. Everything was done in under 2 hours. The Chimney Sweep did show up very early (9:30AM and our appt was for 11:00AM) so luckily someone was home. I can speak for the cost of the damper because I did not get estimates on it, I just wanted it fixed.

+ 0 moreI called Chimney Cricket at approx. 9 am. The person who answered the phone asked me what the problem was. I told him that I did not have any draw on the chimney and wanted someone to look at the problem. He asked me how old the structure was and what kind of furnace there was. He had to confer with someone in the background concerning my problem. When he returned to the phone I was told that due to age of the structure, etc. that a new liner would need to be installed in the chimney. That was their response to my problem. They made this determination without looking at my furnace or chimney. As it turned out there was a birds nest in my chimney. Why do I need a costly, new liner for that?

+ -1 moreI called on Saturday and scheduled the appointment for noon on Wednesday. They said it would take approximately 30 minutes. Three sweeps showed up at noon. The head sweep inspected the chimney/fireplace and said everything was in good condition. My house is 75 years old so that was good news. They removed the fireplace grate some items near the work area. Then they laid down a large drop cloth, plugged in the vacuum, and started sweeping. When they were done the fireplace looked great and the room was still clean. They gave me a $30 discount because of Angie's List and out the door in under 30 minutes. My overall experience was excellent and I could not believe how clean they left the fireplace and room. I would highly recommend this company for their professional work, scheduling, and cleanliness.

They performed the work in an expeditious manner and cleaned up the area and removed their equipment. I can certainly recommend Chimney Cricket as a chimney sweep. + 0 moreI called Chimney Cricket after another company did not call me back. Chimney Cricket answered on the first call and were able to accommodate my schedule. They arrived 30 minutes later than they had told me, but it was a miscommunication (they said 8 am but had on their schedule 8:30am). Kemal went to work right away and noticed that our one chimney was missing the damper. He otherwise recommended cleaning of the 2 chimneys and adding the damper to the one chimney. He was able to perform both services at that time. Kemal and his co-worker worked diligently and finished in about an hour and 20 minutes. They placed drop cloths down to protect the carpet and were conscientious of any stray particles (cleaned up). Kemal also guaranteed the damper for life. Overall, it was a positive experience.

+ 2 moreI called Chimney Cricket after having a bad experience trying to schedule another service; I was glad to read such excellent reviews for this service provider and decided to start here. I was a little disappointed that every time I called I got voicemail; however, Kemal called me back about 70 minutes after I finally left a message, which impressed me. Not only that, but he scheduled me right away for just days later. On the day of the appointment, they arrived 15 minutes early, which was a good surprise in this case. Kemal came in, inspected my fireplace and chimney flue, then told me I needed a cap to prevent water damage (I have been experiencing some water issues). While on the roof he noticed that I needed patching of the blocks around the top of the chimney. I honestly had been expecting all of this, and was content with the estimate he gave for this work. Since they were early and could perform the work immediately for a price within the range I was expecting, I told them to get started. They cleaned the chimney and fireplace, added two caps to my chimney, and sealed the loose blocks all within an hour. I feel that the quality of the work looks solid, they were friendly and clean and professional. I would definitely call them again for a cleaning or further repairs.

+ 2 moreIt went very well. Of note is that they did not use a cover over the fireplace to prevent dust from getting into the room. In our previous house (in another state), the chimney cleaners completely cover the fireplace opening before starting the vacuum. However, there was very little dust that scattered into the air and they did a clean job.
Description of Work: Our recently purchased 50-year-old Frank Lloyd Wright architecture house has two large brick fireplaces. We called Chimney Cricket to inspect them. I spoke directly with Kemal, who is the owner, and he arranged to come the following morning, within a ½ hour window. He arrived duly and gave the same evaluation that another company gave of the condition of both fireplaces. However, he also offered a discount on his regular fee to clean both chimneys, and gave a lot of advice on the downstairs fireplace. He felt that the flue, that has a right angle in it, might not draw well and recommended we burn a fire in it to test it. Then he offered suggestions for steps to take if it didn’t draw well (or if it smoked), including extending the flue at the top of the chimney and converting it to a gas log fire. He asked where the mechanical room was and showed me the boxes where the water heater, furnace and upstairs fireplace ended. (The ashes can be swept (when cold) into this box from the upstairs fireplace and only needs emptying once a year.) The water heater and furnace boxes were full of leaves and he suggested a simple wire mesh for the non-fireplace flues, but recommended a cap for the downstairs fireplace flue with the right angle as it was also full of leaves. Since the flues are close to each other, a multi-flue cap would be the best solution, once the fires were shown to draw well. I was impressed with his honesty. The other company wanted to sell me a chimney cap (at twice the online price) and didn’t discuss the flue issue. Kemal and his assistant did an efficient job cleaning both fireplaces. The entire appointment lasted an hour. He also offered advice on a suitable grate (one had disintegrated) and how often to clean the fireplaces and to use only seasoned or dry wood. I feel confident that we’ve found a good, experienced, reliable chimney sweep. We’ll be using only Chimney Cricket in the future.
