Two guys arrived for a "diagnostic" service call. They were polite, which is a "plus." They performed their "diagnostic" testing and added several other "tests," but did not tell me there would be additional charges. The service call was supposed to have cost me $89. The primary guy indicated that I needed to replace both my furnace and also needed to replace the duct work, as it is somehow "too small" given the size of the house. (NOTE: The duct work was installed when the house was built, and presumably, based on existing code at the time). He ALSO suggested that I should replace the furnace with a smaller one, because the existing one is "too big for the house." To make his point, he drilled a hole in the chimney pipe to take some measurements, then plugged the hole with a heat-resistant caulk. However, he dislodged the chimney pipe in the process, which I discovered after they left. When these two relatively cordial guys finished their tests, I was presented with a bill for $185, as well as a recommendation that I talk to their sales rep regarding expanding the duct work and down-sizing the furnace. There were no further sales pitches made during this appointment, but I was told that this company is a "stickler" for air flow issues, and few of the local competitors stay apprised of the most current airflow research as well as they do. Hence, my urgent need to replace my furnace AND duct work, pronto! They could not quote me a price to make these recommended changes, but indicated that a sales rep would contact me on approximately 11/26/12. He finally did contact me on 12/11/12. However, by this date, I had already had all needed work completed by another company for less than $200, and my "oversized" furnace (still under its original warranty) is working perfectly.
Description of Work: It was supposed to have been a "diagnostic" check-up for $89. However, the team did additional 'testing," without telling me there would be a higher fee, and then charged me $185.

The service was excellent. They did an incredible job. The workers helped evaluate what system we needed, and they even gave detailed instructions on how to use the new system. Their customer service was outstanding. I would recommend them.

Excellent. The technician was 5 minutes early, extremely courteous, and knew what he was doing. After an hour of most cleaning the furnace, he departed. Couldn't ask for more, or better service.

All work work was completed as described by very compentant and professionial technicians. Our basement was cleaner after the installation than it was before the work started. Work was completed in two days as promised. The cost for the work was not inexpensive, but we feel we got real value for what was done. Very impressive installation. every detail attended to. I would highly recommend Bolster-DeHart. A great experence.
Description of Work: Had gas fired boiler replaced. Met with Dave Wagner to discuss my options and estimated price range. All work was described in great detail. We knew exactly what would take place and the time required. No unanswered questions. Professional and friendly.

Went very well. Their office is very responsive and I was able to schedule an appointment easily and at a time convenient to me. On the day scheduled, the office called me when the tech (Anthony) with about 30 min out. He was a bit late and it would probably have been better to just have had him call me to provide a more accurate time. That said, he knew why he had been called out and immediately began rounding up his tools. He took his time, explaining what he was doing, and he offered very good advice. When it came to testing the pressure relief valve he explained that while it was part of their inspection, there was a risk that it would not close and would potentially have to be replaced. After some discussion I told him to test it, I lucked out and it's just dripping a little bit now that it's closed. I appreciated his willingness to explain the pros and cons and put me in a position to make a good decision. He demonstrated how to light the pilot and how to replace the thermocouple if necessary. He thoroughly tested the pressure regulator and made other recommendations for insulating the pipes. Overall, he was very thorough and pleasant. He was also very knowledgable and diligent. I would gladly have him back.
Description of Work: Full boiler inspection. Cleaned elements, inspected the boiler, checked for gas and CO leaks, ran the system up to temp, investigated questionable feed regulator, lubed motor, offered advice for future maintenance.

Technician showed up on time to clean both the A/C and heating. Did his job. Cleaned the electrostatic air cleaner that I didn't notice was part of the heating AC system. He asked before he did so since there was an additional charge. The best part was that they did both the air and the heating under the yearly contract. I would use them again.

We have used Bolster-Dehart for several years, and used to be pretty happy with their service. However, our last service was unbelievably bad. We scheduled a basic, routine furnace inspection and tuneup. The technician was also to measure a basement duct for insulation. The technician, Mike, became increasingly annoyed during the visit. When I questioned water I was finding near the furnace, he informed me that was an air conditioning issue and I would have to have him return, and pay for another service call, to address any of those issues. Fine. I scheduled that. However, the day after his visit, I was doing laundry - HE TOOK A CLEAN HANDTOWEL FROM A STACK OF CLEAN LAUNDRY, USED IT TO CLEAN INSIDE THE FURNACE, AND THEN HID IT IN A BIN OF MY HUBANDS WORK SHIRTS. The damp, filthy towel had already started to mold and stained one of my husbands shirt. I called immediately, and of course, he denied it. I had just sorted laundry before his visit and am sure I didn't do that. When another technician came to deal with the A/C problem, I showed him the towel, and he concurred that was used to clean the furnace. I endured repeated phone tag with the service manager - he left several messages only during the times I repeatedly told him I was not available. Nothing was done to address this situation at all. I did not receive the quotes I requested for the insulation and a new a/c unit. I guess since I complained, they don't want my business. Based on prior experience with this company, I initially thought this was just a bad employee, and would have been happy to continue with the inulation and new a/c with different employees, but I couldn't even get the quotes I requested. I have never seen this lack of professionalism, and downright nastiness, from any company, ever.

Paul DeHart, President personally called also and after a discussion with the customer I advised that I would call to schedule an appointment. Left two messages and never received a return telephone call.

My sister called me in a panic last night because her furnace was blowing cold air on a night when it was below freezing. She mentioned to me that she had called a large, local heating company that my husband and I had used in the past and had had a very bad experience with. I strongly encouraged her not to use them but instead use a company from Angie's List and, in particular, a company with a great track record - Bolster-DeHart. Upon calling she was informed that someone would call her back within 30 minutes and that is exactly what they did. Due to a severe snow storm my sister and the technician (Mike V.) agreed that he would come the next morning (while the technician was happy to try to come but sister knew the roads were only getting worse and didn't want him out driving on them). Mike V. showed up on time and quickly fixed the problem (corrosion build-up on the flame sensor) and only charged $74. My sister was very satisfied with the price. The other company she called was going to charge $75 just to show-up and another $99 to fix and diagnose the problem! Overall, my sister couldn't have been more impressed with the company and the technician, Mike V. He was pleasant, professional and very informative. It's nice to know that customer service still exists and that you won't have to give up an arm & a leg when an emergency occurs. After my sister's experience I know who I will be calling when I have heating problems! My hats off to Bolster-DeHart and Angie's List!

He arrived on time. Inspected both furnaces and answered questions on the maintenance of both. He also took a look at our humidifier, which was in an apparently non-functioning state and got it to work again.

Woke up this morning to realize I had no heat. Found the burner on furnace would not ignite. Called BDH and left message on a Saturday morning probably around 10:30 a.m. Received prompt return phone call within about 30 minutes, explained my problem over the phone, and the individual from BDH told me the problem was likely the ignitor. Scheduled the technician to come that day. They got to me within about 3-4 hours of my initial call, which on what was probably the coldest day of the year and a Saturday was pretty good. They also called a couple of times to let me know where I was in the service queue and then once the technician was on his way. The ignitor was the problem as diagnosed over the phone and the price was exactly as quoted over the phone. They charged $74 for the service call and $160 for parts & labor to install the ignitor. I called Metro H&AC (off the List) and they wanted $140 just for the service call (overtime rates for Saturday). BDH doesn't charge overtime rates until after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The $74 service call fee is standard M-S 8:30-4:30. Was very pleased with the prompt service and with getting my heat restored rather painlessly. This was the first time I used BDH and I would use them again. Only issue I have with any of these companies is the service call fee that is charged on top of the parts and labor when they do a repair. I think if they do a repair they should give you a break on the service call fee or not charge one at all. The markup on the parts has to be astronomical such that I am sure they made a nice penny just on the parts & labor for the ignitor. But considering the other place I called wanted almost double the service call fee and I received prompt, professional service with no additional overtime fee on a Saturday, which was the coldest day of the year, I cannot really complain.

Everything went very well. Bolster-DeHart's Comfort Consultant Dave Wagner oversaw the entire project starting with a clear explanation of our options and the pricing. Once we made our decisions, Bolster-DeHart's technicians installed all components with skill and efficiency. Dave Wagner then followed up to make sure that everything was functioning and that we were having no problems with our new system. The entire project was handled in a very professional manner. It was clear that this company takes great pride in their work.

The technician, Nick, was very punctual, arriving at 8 am on the dot. He came in and went right to work. Although I had only scheduled a furnace service, I asked if he could also service the humidifier, which he did gladly. After the work was done, he explained everything he had done and took the time to answer my questions. He also mentioned that my filter still looked like it has a few months of life left in it, which was nice since I had intended on changing it right after the service. He even took extra time to show me how to use my programmable thermostat. He was in and out in an hour. Overall, it was a great experience.
Description of Work: I purchased the one-year service contract. The technician performed the yearly service for my furnace and humidifier. This price included the new water panel for the humidifier, and will also cover my AC service in the spring.

The service was very good. The technician was nice and explained everything. He helped me get the appropriate size filters for the system (they had the wrong size in them). He did not even mention push anything extra until I asked questions.
Description of Work: Checked air conditioning system that wasn't cooling properly. Needed coolant. Did appropriate repair, and also advised on age of system and warned that if there was a problem again next year, it could mean system needs to be replaced. Since I was a new owner of this house, I bought a maintanence contract as well ($160/year)

Don returned my phone call within 15 minutes of my initial contact with the answering service at 7:55 AM today (Saturday July 10, 2010). He asked me to describe the issue - a ticking noise when the furnace fan was engaged. He then asked if the filter had been changed recently to which I replied in the affirmative. He suggested that a piece of the filter had become dislodged during the replacement and drawn into the fan. At his further suggestion, I removed the new filter and the front panels of the furnace. I then placed a lantern inside and saw that there was a large chunk of the filter housing wedged in the fan. He asked me to call him back if there was any other issue but his recommendations resolved my problem immediately. With all of the other unforseen expenses I've been faced with recently, this quick and easy solution to what I feared was a major furnace issue came as a very pleasant surprise.

The person that I spoke with was very professional and I was ready to make an appointment, as I thought their price was reasonable. When I gave him my address, he said that he didn't service our area. No problem, but we do live in Allegheny County, and that is part of their service area on Angie's List. It just needs updated, as I wouldn't have called if I knew they didn't service my area.

Contractor responded to bid request package, which included specs, equipment performance requirements, and strict payment terms. Price was higher than low bid, but met my very stringent requirements; so, price was reasonable and work was completed as promised. Work was carried out by his own very professional crew. Work was done in a timely manner, and owner was on site regularly...very concientious. Definitely would use again for anything that is complex, and requires durabilty, long service life, and clean and professional finish all all work. I was the design consultant and construction manager for the owners of the building.
Description of Work: Work was replacement of complete HVAC for a residential complex' indoor swimming pool and rec center. Included major equipment, ductwork, complex controls, all electrical, renovating some structural and finishes.

Service call placed on Friday. Service scheduled for Noon Monday. Someone from the office called to reconfirm on Monday morning. They called again to say service rep was on the way. He arrived a few minutes before Noon. Service Rep was polite, articulate and quick. He was able to locate loose wires with a VOM meter and tighten the connections. He then performed a seasonal review of all the heating equipment. When he checked the humidifier, he found that it had not been correctly wired and had therefore never turned on in two years. He repaired the wiring. He went over the service agreement with me, called to verify they would accept the $10 Angie's List coupon and left. He was on the premises for about an hour.
Description of Work: Service Call placed because furnace would not go on when thermostat called for heat. Tech rep discovered loose wiring, which he repaired. Decided to sign up for regular maintenance for both heat and a/c.

Overall it went as well as I possibly could have imagined. They came when they said they would; they were efficient and professional and very nice. Since it was a two day job, they cleaned up after themselves both days, leaving my basement cleaner than they found it and they finished early. They were thorough in teaching me everything I needed to know about the new boiler and thermostat. And the system works wonderfully. The price was exactly what they said it would be.
