 + 0 moreWe have a contract with them and so they just come out and do the fertilization. They don't even knock on the door, they just send a note saying they are coming and we get a bill once they are done. If we feel like we need some trimming or they think that some trimming needs to be done then we contact each other. Our trees are very happy so whatever they are doing, they are doing right. They do quality work and they do what they say they are going to do. The workers were very polite and nice, they cleaned up after themselves. I don't see them too often though. I would recommend them.
Description of Work: I used the service of McFarland Tree & Landscape Services. They do fertilization once a year.

 + 1 moreMy initial concern with getting the tree pruned was finding an experienced company and having it done properly! Upon hiring McFarland tree and landscape services my experience was a positive one. Dean was professional and extremely knowledgeable. The service was perfomed the next day and the tree looks absolutely beautiful! They did a wonderful job, thank you Dean!
Description of Work: I had my Japanese Maple tree pruned, had dead limbs removed and had a couple of girding roots cut!

 + -1 moreToday, as always, they arrived as scheduled, worked quickly and completed all tasks to specification. Staff are always polite and professional with top care given to protect the rest of the property despite the large equipment and heavy work. My only criticism of McFarland beyond the cost is that they can't seem to keep their arborists who also serve as salespeople. In the 5-6 years I have worked with them, I usually have a new contact each year. While the cost seems to be balanced by knowledge and expertise, I wonder why they can't keep their talent. They do seem to keep good notes on my property, as each new person is fully versed when we connect, so I don't have to start explaining the history and my objectives all over again. Bottom-line, if you just need a tree removed, some dead-wooding done, etc., you can find a better deal. If you need a specialist, so far, they remain the best I have found. I comparison shop/bid the work every other year.
Description of Work: I have been working with McFarland for several years now. I own a wooded lot, so lots of tree care is required. Many are red oaks that have been infected with Bacterial Leaf Scorch (a diseases carried by insects for which there is treatment but no cure and eventually kills the tree). For years (most recently today) trees that have succumbed have been removed (2 very large trees, stump grinding) AND treatment for the stronger trees that includes injected insecticide, root fertilizer, and oxytetracycline which acts like an anti-viral to keep the disease from getting worse. They are always professional and very knowledgeable, hence why I continue to work with them. But the nature of my property and the infected trees has made for an expensive and extensive relationship. You can find cheaper services for tree removal for sure, but if you have any unique issues or need a professional arborist to look at something, I think these guys are the best, and I have shopped around.

 + -1 moreMy oak tree is doing well unlike others in the area. I am happy with the outcome. Our acorn harvest is booming and there is a healthy crop of leaves overhead. Care is needed when walking underneath the tree as those little acorns gain momentum when they fall 60+ feet or so. Small furry creatures also enjoy the acorns which, with a bit of effort, can develop into a self manufactured mulch. A real live person always answers the phone and their people are consistenly pleasant, knowledgible and courteous.
Description of Work: This company has performed a variety of services for me over some time. They have pruned, cut down dead trees, reseeded my front lawn as well as done landscaping. The most recent job they did for me was to treat my Scarlet Oak with antibiotics to avoid Oak rust which they have done for several years.

 + 0 moreMcFarland has been taking care of the large trees on my property for over 20 years. It is is the only company I would trust to prune or take down very large trees without damaging my house. It is not the least expensive company around, but its work is top quality.

 + -1 moreThe quote was higher than my other estimate, however, I was impressed by Paul Morano's professionalism and decided to go with McFarland. The crew showed up early, finished early, and left my backyard immaculate. A few weeks later they returned to grind out the stump left from the tree. It was expensive, but nothing was damaged during the removal of a very large tree in a very tight spot between numerous townhouses in Center City Philadelphia.
Description of Work: Removed 40 foot tall alley tree and grinded out stump; pruned plum tree and rose bush in backyard; removed 2 yew bushes and 3 old stumps in backyard.

 + -1 moreMy initial estimate was with Locke Woodfin. He was very pleasant and responsive at the onset. I informed him that we were trying to sell the house and wanted to maximize its appearance. When I returned from work after the job was done, I was surprised to see that only a few of the beds had been mulched. In addition, the patio had not been sweeped, the extremely long grass clippings had been left on the lawn, and the numerous small twigs that had fallen from the trees had not been picked up. I tried calling Locke several times to discuss, but got no response. When he eventually left me a message a few days later, he seemed quite put out by my request to finish the job. He has not been back since to evaluate, and I ended up cleaning up myself...not what I expected.
Description of Work: I requested a spring cleanup and was quoted this price for mulching, weeding, planting some shrubs, cutting off a dead tree branch, and cleanup.

 + -1 moreThe experience went well. The estimate came in at about $2500. I did not have any problems with how they dealt with the estimate. The economy has been a little bit tough lately so we did not hire them, but I have nothing bad to say about how the estimate went.

They are always on time for any jobs I set up. They also do some brick work and have fixed the bricks when the roots have overturned them.

 + -1 moreNo issues with the work, only the responsiveness of their representative. Quote was obtained and deposit paid in late June. No response by contractor to schedule work, even after repeated calls, until late July. Work was finally performed in early August, over one month from date of quote. Even after speaking to their representative he did not call back as promised and I had to chase them to commit to scheduling the work. When the work was finally scheduled, the work crew showed up at the wrong time of day. That said, the quality of work performed was superb. They did the job as promised, on budget and even cleaned up some things that I didn't expect them to do. In sum, no issues with the work (or the work crew) itself, only the punctuality and responsiveness of their representative.
Description of Work: Removal of small shrubs and replacement of railroad ties.

 + -1 moreOverall, I thought that he was very nice, but, kind of just out for the money. He was outrageously priced. He wanted $400 just to pick the leaves up in the backyard. He was just basically trying to get as many services out of us as he could. I also wanted to have a tree topped out and he wanted to charge $2000 for that. It was crazy. He is a guy from the neighborhood, but, like I said, he was only interested in his money. He did not charge us for coming out, just quoted things.
Description of Work: I had hired McFarland to come into my home and basically give me some ideas and quotes for my yard. A few things he quoted was picking up the leaves in the back and topping out a tree for us.

 + -1 moreThe estimate and work was done in a timely manner and with a great attitude. It was cold and rainy that day, but they showed up on time and were done before I knew it! Everything detailed in the estimate was completed to my satisfaction. I would use them again if only I had more trees surrounding my little house in the city.

 + -1 moreMcFarland's price for the above work was higher than we were quoted by a smaller local firm, but their price included removal of "all" material/debris and planting of a new tree. The arborist also seemed much more knowledgeable about the three trees in question. Some branches were missed, on one of the pruned trees the first time, but when reported, they came out right away to correct.
Description of Work: Pruned maple and pine trees in rear yard. Removed diseased dogwood in front yard, ground stump and planted new Kwanzan Cherry tree in its place.
