This review is in reference to the SOD install by JMJ Landscaping: JMJ's scope of the work included everything above except irrigation. JMJ set themselves apart from the rest as they offered to scrape-up the existing lawn instead of spray chemicals to kill the lawn. Having dogs, we were concerned about the chemicals and the week-long period the dogs would have to remain off the grounds due to the chemicals. With JMJ's proposal, our dogs could roam the grounds at any time. We're extremely satisfied with JMJ. We got to know the owner, Jason, and several key employees, Nilo, Darius, Gil and Wayne, as if they were family. They were courteous, thorough, neat, diligent and knowledgeable. They listened to our needs and offered their expert opinions. It's been over a month now since project completion. Our lawn is looking beautiful!
Description of Work: Losing the battle against weeds, and short from firebombing the property, we chose to install sod and irrigation. We used Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau to select several companies in our area. We discovered that some companies install both sod and irrigation whereas others performed only one service or the other. Being low-maintenance kind of people, we anticipated hiring a company that provided both services...as they're convenient; though we kept an open mind. Project scope for approx. 5,500 sq ft: - Remove existing "lawn" - Grade/level the property - Install irrigation - Add topsoil - Install sod - Mulch tree/shrub beds After contacting numerous companies and scheduling site surveys with 7 of them, we chose JMJ Landscaping to install the sod and Ecosystems to install the irrigation. It was a tough decision, as there were a few reputable companies to chose from, but that's the call we made. Thankfully, we made the right call!

Upon first day of contact with the company, they were extremely insightful, courteous, and professional. Jason came out to give an estimate and made suggestions according to the layout and size of my yard at my request. I trusted his opinions/insight due to reading previous reviews on Angie's List and seeing examples of their work. Upon starting work approximately 2-3 weeks later, Jason along with a handful of workers arrived and carried out their duties in an exemplary manner. They were all polite, professional, and left no mess, only a high-quality finished product. It's hard to believe that my yard looks as good as it does in the 2 days they worked on it. It went from practically a jungle overrun with weeds, into a beautiful patio. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone looking for such service. Thanks again.

Perfect! From the first phone call to the last minute when Jason completed the project.I first contacted the office and left a message over a weekend. The next day I received a call back from Jason. I explained to him what I had and what I was looking for. I told him that last year a friend added a concrete patio and now I want it and the yard landscaped. I was open to just about anything, being I'm not a landscaping person. I had some ideas that I relayed to him. We set an appointment for that saturday morning to have him look at the yard and see what he thinks. He arrived exactly on time that morning. We talked about the yard, he came up with some ideas, took some measurements and drawings of the yard. He said give him about a week to come up with a plan. A week later we meet in his office as he showed us his plans. WOW! we thought. This is my back yard, no way. He designed a sitting was, an area for a fire pit with a flagstone base, adding more area to the patio. Retaining walls that made flower beds. The whole design included curves which added another dimension to the patio. We came up with the idea of adding pillars to the sides of the steps leading to the lower part of the yard. They added a whole new look to the design and made it look even better. Then we talked about lighting. What a difference built in lighting adds to the finished project. I would have never thought about it, but now I would never be without it. We left Jasons office excited but said we were going to think about it. I spoke to several other landscaping contractors, some that I found on Angies List, and decided to go with JMJ. No one else came up with a design and look like Jason did even at a higher cost. We made some minor changes to the original plan, and put a deposit on the job, a start date was also set. JMJ started working on the yard as planned, on time. Jason was there working with his team. His team is one of the hardest working group on men I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I was amazed in how much effort was put into making a secure foundation for the walls and the base for the flagstone. These were installed the "right way" not as if I were to do it myself, and what a difference. The finished product is just awesome! Every detail is just right, the design fits perfect. I cant wait to get Jason and his team back next year to do another project.
Description of Work: Jason and his team from JMJ Landscaping turned a back yard that resembled a war zone into could be a cover page on any home magazine. He started with just a concrete patio off of florida room in the back of the house and a back yard with no grass just dirt and mud, what a mess! JMJ put an addition to the patio constructed of large irregular shaped flagstone, and constructed a semi circle sitting wall around the flagstone. They constructed two EP Henry retaining walls & two pillars by a set of steps. They created 4 flower beds added all the landscaping plants, bushes, grasses, roses, boulders to go in the flower beds. Also performed was the addition of lighting under the ledge of the sitting wall and on the pillars. They also added top soil, graded and seeded the side and back yards of the property.

They did not come or call and it has been more than two weeks. When my husband called them, they said there must have been a mix-up, they didn't know we wanted them, but they would look into it and call back TODAY. It is now almost 6:00 PM and so far, there has been no call. If the job is too big, with too much manual labor - or too small - and they don?t want it ? say so ? don?t just fail to show up and not return phone calls. UPDATE: The landscaper called at 10:00 AM this morning, apologized for the mix-up, and explained that they had not called yesterday as promised because they were awaiting a call-back from one of their other customers to see if it would be possible to reschedule that customer's job in order to do ours this week. They said they would be able to do our job on Thursday of this week, and they would cut $100. of the total bill to make up for the inconvenience to us. My husband accepted their apology and offer, and scheduled the job for Thursday. In retrospect, it would have been better if they had called last evening, as promised, just to let us know that they were working on rescheduling our job and had not forgotten us. We then would not have written a complaint review. UPDATE II: As a follow-up to my last review of JMJ Landscaping, the edging and mulching of our flower beds was completed as promised on Thursday, May 24th, his crew did a good job. Jason apologized for the mix-up and took full responsibility. I told him that when a telephone call is promised that call MUST be made, whether to convey success, failure or even "no progress yet." He acknowledged that would have been better. I am satisfied with the work done.
Description of Work: I am not happy with this landscaper at all! We called the two landscapers listed that were closest to us and selected JMJ Landscaping. We were initially given a price to edge and mulch around four fruit trees, a Japanese Maple, the flower beds surrounding the house, and around the pool, inside & outside of the pool fence. My husband agreed with the price, but when they discussed what mulch we wanted, not the died black mulch that they were planning to use but one that was dark brown, he called back with a lower price that was even better. He said he couldn't do the job immediately, but in a week or so. UPDATE: Jason came with a three-man crew who edged all of my flower beds and spread the mulch around and under all of the plants, taking care around the delicate annual impatiens. They did a good job and then cleaned up afterwards. The beds look good. I am pleased.

Jason came out onetime. Offered a reasonable solution to serious runoff problems we had been experiencing. Clearly knew what he was doing and offered good suggestions. Sent a clear proposal with reasonable estimate within one week. I was set to hire this company but prior to doing so I sent over a few question by email. I never received a response with to me is a red flag. We ended up going with another company.

Very disappointed with the Jason, the president of JMJ. I wanted to replace my concrete walkway and step in the front of my house with pavers. Was going to be a large job. I decided to start getting estimates and plans in the late fall 2011 so that I could start the project in early spring. I was looking forward to having JMJ bid on the job as the company received rave reviews on Angie's List. Jason did not return my call promptly but did eventually call me to set up an appointment. He said his designer was not available so he came out himself. He seemed very nice and professional and appeared to have good ideas for a design. Said he'd email me with several designs. I had to follow up with him after 2 weeks. He emailed me one design although he indicated there were several. He asked me to pick one and he'd work up a price. I responded to him, but he never got back to me. Had to put the project on hold for a few months but I followed up with him in Feb. Asked if he was still interested. He said he definitely was interested. I asked for him to give me a quote on the previous design. I never even got the courtesy of a reply. Meanwhile, I have contracted with another service provider from Angie's List and I'm very happy with his services. We have expanded the project to include a large landscape redesign in addition to the hardscape.

The owner, Jason, came out and gave me an estimate. He drew up some thoughts and within a few days, sent me the proposal and a 3d rendering of what the patio would look like. He was able to work with me on the price and although it was higher than our budget, we decided to get the work done. The work started promptly and it was very exciting to come home from work each day to see how much they got done. Jason was very flexible throughout the process and worked through the unforeseen issues that my property had in store for Jason and his crew. JMJ finished all of the work within about a week and a half and it looks amazing.
Description of Work: We needed to have an existing patio removed and have EP Henry pavers replace it. We also needed tile removed from the front porch and have new tiles put down.

Working with JMJ has been, by far, the best experience we have ever had with any type of hired/contracted company. When the president, Jason, arrived for our estimate appointment, he listened to my plan and offered several inexpensive suggestions that really added to the overall design. We received our estimate within a few days, and the estimate included computer-generated drawings of the design, which really helped us to visualize the final product, and it ensured us that JMJ understood what we were looking for. The initial estimate came in over our budget, but Jason worked with me to make some changes that would allow us to remain under budget. They began working about one week after I accepted the bid. I have had a lot of experience with hired work, and this crew was the most professional I have ever seen. Jason (president) and Gil (vice president) worked on the job every day. Their additional two men were highly skilled, efficient, and very polite. The crew worked a minimum of 8 hours each day and made sure that everything was clean and secure at the end of the work day. The work itself is beautiful!! There was a great level of detail paid to every aspect of the job. We live in a row home in the city which often makes work difficult because of the junk and fill debris, and uneven lines of the house. JMJ approached this job as if it were a million dollar estate in the suburbs. We really appreciate their commitment to quality. I could go on and on about JMJ, but I will just say that they went above and beyond our expectations and I would not hesitate to recommend them to friends or family.
Description of Work: JMJ removed an old concrete slab and replaced it with paving stones, built a stone veneer planting box, set fence posts, regraded an entire lot and removed debris, and built a brick wall with pillars at the entry.

The start date was later than hoped for, but it was height of the summer. The patio is beautiful. There was a downspout that would have fallen onto the patio, so they buried it underneath and set a garden drain at the end. We made some changes during the construction and changes were made cheerfully. The best thing about the experience was the crew themselves. Besides exhibiting good quality of work, these men were certainly some of the most pleasant individuals we have hired. An excellent experience.
Description of Work: The crew installed an E. P. Henry paver patio. Preparation was extensive. They were working in a very small area and had to do most work by hand.

Jason gave me a proposal to remove grass, regrade back yard, reseed, rearrange and plant flower beds. He listened to what I wanted and gave me options. Jason's staff removed all the grass in the back yard (1/4 acre) and reseeded it. He removed older plantings that were in the wrong place. We ended up with 2 new beds and reconfiguring 2 existing beds. He planted a beautiful Crape Myrtle tree. My backyard looks amazing with just the right amount of plantings to accent the patio and yard. Jason also put in pavers behind the built in stone hearth to hide the gas grill when not in use. He was great to deal with, professional and knowledgeable.

They came out to look at work to be done, did measurements, etc., but then that was it. Never got back to me or sent quote as promised. Very unprofessional to at least not let me know they decided they did not want to do the work. For the reason that they came out, I spent half-hour with them in yard, they did measurements, told me quote would come and now 3 weeks later, NOTHING, they get an F.

From the quote to the end of the job, the owner was responsive and accommodating. In addition to the work they performed, the owner worked with our fencing contractor for placement of sonatubes which would be used later when installing a fence. He made an extra trip to the house to meet with the fencing contractor and work out the details. We called a few times with questions and he never failed to return the call...even after the work was done and we were about to be hit with Hurricane Irene...he came by to make sure we wouldn't have an avalanche of mud because it was still fresh backfilled soil and no grass. The three gentlemen who actually did the work obviously knew what they were doing. The job took 5 days to complete. The job site was left clean every night when they departed. It was actually a pleasure to have them onsite. The job was completed to the last detail including repair of our asphalt driveway where they excavated. When they left it was absolutely finished. We would give this company our highest recommendation for attention to detail, quality, service and follow-up. It was worth the price we paid to get the job done professionally and without stress.

Overall it was a very good experience. Jason came out to give us the estimate in April. We had to wait for my neighbor to come up with her half of the deposit money. It would have been done sooner if we did not have to wait for her. The only other problem we had was weather. It rained quite a bit and then got too hot to pour cement, and that could not be helped by any person. JMJ is a great company to do business with, and the work they did was excellent.
Description of Work: We had concrete front steps put in. These were for 2 houses, and my neighbor and I split the above amount. In other words we each paid $2,025.00. They had to remove the original steps, put forms down and pour the concrete. They came back on the second day to remove the forms and smooth out the sides.

On 26-May an appointment was set up for 1-June, 12:00pm, at my home. Someone from JMJ was to come out and give me an estimate for repair to my concrete porch. At 12:50pm, I called JMJ and left a message asking why they had not called to say if they were running late or needed to reschedule. At 1:20pm I received a call from Jason (the "J" in JMJ). He was very apologetic and wanted to make it up to me. He said he'd be over in 45 minutes if that was ok by me. I was skeptical but said ok. On the dot, 45 min later, Jason and two workmen arrived. I showed Jason the work I wanted down. He measured and gave me an estimate. Then he told me that remembering appointments was "not his best attribute" and that he tends to focus on the work itself. Jason saw that I had some large branches and other de-"tree"-tes along side the house and asked if I wanted it removed - no charge. This was his way of making it up to me for forgetting the appointment. He and his crew took everything away, raked the area clean, and then took a blower (a nice quiet one) and cleaned the driveway area, too. Jason said he had a couple days the following week to do the job. I said I'd call in the beginning of the week to REMIND him. I will let ya'll know how it turns out. [UPDATE] I called on June 7 and left a message with Gil. On June 9 Dennis called and said a crew would be out at 9am on Friday, June 10. I called JMJ at 10am on Friday, June 10 and asked Gil what the status was. He said, "I don't know why they aren't there but they should be on their way." A few minutes later I got a call from Dennis with a thousand excuses but I stopped him and said, "I just need to know if they are on their way." [Why can't someone pick up a phone and say that they are running late? Without a phone call you can't tell if the contractor is on the way or if they've blown off the client!] Dennis said they are only "19 minutes" from me and they ARE on their way. That was an hour ago. FINAL UPDATE YAY!!! 11:15am the crew arrived. Truck trouble. Couldn't find their supplier. etc. Once here, they got to work, they did the job, they called me out to point out a couple things, they cleaned up, and they were polite. They did have to borrow my hammer and some nails for the framing. Gone by 3:00pm. Concrete looks good. Got a follow-up call this evening at 8:30pm to see how everything went and to ask if I had any questions. Thank you and good night.
Description of Work: JMJ had scheduled an appointment with me to give me an estimate on some concrete repair work at my home on June 1 and said they'd be out on June 10 to do the job: Repair a concrete step and two concrete sidewalk pads.

The work started within two weeks of the original estimate. The men who did the work arrived promptly each morning and worked extremely hard each day, staying several days until almost dark to finish a part of the project. They were very professional, always talked to us if there was a question about something, and always cleaned-up debris from the project. The ep henry porch and walkways are just beautiful! They did an outstanding job and were meticulous about making everything perfect. The concrete pads are an immense improvement over the little white stones they replaced and the grading and seeding were done perfectly to redirect water which flows down from the street toward our house. They also added topsoil to help with this process. The shrubs which they planted were beautiful, full and already flowering. The men went our of their way to replant the old shrubs in another location in our yard. We are very, very pleased with the final outcome of all this work. We would recommend this company to anyone and plan to hire them again to complete more landscaping work for us. Jason is professional, knowledgeable, and responds promptly to any questions or requests. Everyone who worked here was equally as nice and took pride in their fine work.
Description of Work: We contacted Jason after reading excellent reviews of his work on Angie's List. We originally planned to replace a cracked front porch and crumbling front walkway, but because Jason was very reponsive and had good ideas, we actually had his company replace the front porch and walk and also a stone pathway from our driveway to a rear deck with pavers. He also poured two concrete pads to replace stone areas, regraded and seeded three low areas to improve drainage, installed an underground drainage pipe for a troublesome downspout, and planted three shrubs to replace old shrubs that were not doing well.

Well. JMJ had quoted this as one aspect of a larger job. However, I decided to only go ahead with this aspect. Jason was fine with this and was able to schedule the work for the beginning of the next week after the estimate. JMJ came with a mechanical digger. They took out all the plants, then cleaned up, hauled plants/ tree away and reseeded those areas cut up by the mechanical digger. All work completed the same day.
Description of Work: JMC removed a small tree and its roots and a number of plants from 3 flower beds. These plans were mainly small bushes.

After gathering a number of estimates we decided to work with Jason. After our initial meeting, Jason provided us with a design which he emailed to us (others just provided a written estimate and our imagination), that showed he was actually listening to us. Based on our property's topography, he answered all questions we had regarding the design and was patient to explain why he choose one construction design over others. He and his crew arrived as scheduled and were extremely efficient and hard working. It seemed that they never took a break. They were very careful in thier work, particularly of the irrigation system that criss-crossed their design area. The crew made changes to some of the design plans on the spot, specifically to the drainage, including adding some additional pieces to improve the initial plan. Ultimately, we received some fancier proposals, some more expensive, others less costly. Jason's fit the middle of the group, and now that the job is done we feel we made the right choice. His responsiveness and quality of work met all of our expectations. We've already been in touch to have him come back to help us with some other plans for the property. JMJ is now part of our Rolodex.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced old walkway with Flagstone. Installed multiple drainage points to resolve flooding issues. Installed new pathway lights and uplighting. Removed one large tree as well as multiple smaller shrubs and four large arborvities. Trimmed certain remaining trees.

Gave me quote over phone based on my estimates of tree sizes and how much soil I'd need. I agreed price and was faxed the work agreement to sign. Paid 1/3 upfront by credit card. Work all performed during one visit. Did work a little later than the date originally agreed, but I did say that I was flexible, so this was not an issue. Arrived later than planned on the day so completed work after it had gone dark. Again, not a big issue although they were rushing a little to get finished in the end. I under estimated the amount of soil. Luckily I had spare left over from another job that we were able to use. They spent a l ot of time to thoroughly dig out the magnolia root ball for which i was grateful. Other contractors are not as thorough in my experience. However, this did leave us rushing a bit to get the soil spread out and seeded. Grass now sprouting as spring approaches, so it is looking to be a really nice job. I'm just hoping the new apple tree we planted grows okay - it is still to early for it to start budding! We bought the tree on line and had it delivered. Jason just planted it for us.
Description of Work: Removed a magnolia tree including the root ball (approx 30' high). Removed another smaller tree (20' high) down to ground level - left roots. Spread and scaped top soil unders a cherry tree so grass could grow (tree roots were preventing grass growth). Grass seeded top soiled area. Planted a young apple tree in place of the magnolia tree.
