Best time to reach John is 9-1 .
Description of Work: or free asAs a Realtor for the past 26 years I am experienced in dealing with contractors and roofers. City Wide put a new roof in my clients property 3 years ago with a 15 year warrantee. Now we are selling the property and City Wide was extremely helpful in making our first time buyers happy. They did a few minor maintenance items for us (as well as a none related item for free) honoring the warrantee. They went out of their way to help me. They really stand behind their warrantee and John was extremely professional. I am telling all my Realtor friends! I would recommend City Wide Roofing in Philadelphia to any client especially for the nervous homeowner who wants it done right.

$125

Response from City Wide Roofing Inc
Let me explain to all the customers on Angie's List what is going on with this response. First , the $125 charge was for a roof certification . No money was paid because the roof didn't pass inspection and no cert. was issued. You were informed of the issues with your roof , how much it would cost to fix the roof to get certified and that if you did the repairs a roof certificate would be issued AT NO CHARGE . Thank you, Ed O'Neill

Compared to the other roofing companies, I would still use them. They put my roof on maybe around December. I ordered a skylight and it took almost six months to get the skylights installed. They quoted me one price and then they said my opening was bigger that they had to order it and it took six months and I had to keep calling and calling. After six months, they came and did it and then I had no way to open the skylight in the bathroom. It took me another month and a half up to two months before I get to open the bathroom skylight. They left the trash and the old skylights on top of my roof after installing my new skylights. I was not aware of this until I had my house inspected for sale and and the home inspector notified me of it. I had to pay out $150 for a handyman to come out and take the trash off of my roof. I will not recommend them to anyone else or use their service in the future.
Description of Work: City Wide Roofing did a roofing job for me and installed a skylight. They gave me an estimate for $7200 to do the other side of the roof.

I'm sorry about the delay with the skylight . Custom orders sometimes run into problems , unfortunately this custom order had issues ,but everything is straightened out and I'm glad you are happy with the work . The estimate you referred to in your response is for the mansard roof and gutter . I informed you that the price was reduced to $6750 , due to the fact that you are an excellent Angie's List customer. Please call and we will get this work done right away. Thank you. Ed O'Neill

I was in a panic to get my roof done for fear it would be destroyed by a winter storm. I called for an estimate and the next day the estimate was complete. Ed O'Neil informed me of the severe condition of the roof. He answered all my questions and put my mind at ease with all my concerns. Though it was a costly job it had to be done. After doing some research, I chose City Wide Roofing to do the job. Ed and his crew, were able to put my roof as a priority. Within a weeks time, I had a new, safe, and secure second story deck ceiling! The whole job was outstandingly done ! I was told it would be a two day job and it was just that . The crew was on time and prepared to work . Everyone I came in contact with was very professional! Thank You Ed, John and the crew of three that worked on my house!
Description of Work: City Wide Roofing as a whole did a great job from start to finish on my roof! My flat roof and second story deck was in need of a overhaul and City Wide Roofing did just that. The flat roof was leaking in several areas but the deck ceiling was hazardously leaking. Ed and his crew, first removed all rotted wood of the rafters and joist and replaced it with all new wood. They capped all wood edges to protect them from the elements. The new vinyl ceiling completes the new look. A new downspout was also placed. lastly a new rubber flat roof was performed.

We went with this company because they were the least expensive, had high reviews, and could come out quickly. The installation was fine, normal contractor stuff-not on time, etc. but the real problem arose about 2 weeks later when after a windy day, the metal siding on our roof that they installed, came completely off on both sides! We called to report it and they said someone would be out, after a few days we called again, same story, then we called again. It took about 2.5 weeks for someone to finally come out. They said the roof would be guaranteed and under warranty but when it came time for them to fix something they really took their time and did it reluctantly. I was really disappointed because they were so professional before we paid them.

Called on a Friday afternoon, they came out to inspect the roof the following Monday. The estimate was left in my door when I got home from work that day. The price was excellent compared to another company's estimate. I accepted the estimate on Wednesday, and they were at my house on Thursday to complete the work. Everything went very well. The only problem I had was that a very small bit of mess was left in my back yard, but when they came out to collect payment, I showed it to them, and they were out the next day to clean it up. I couldn't really ask for anything more from any kind of company. Highly recommended.

There were two smaller areas of roofing, below the main portion of the roof (in the corners of the roof, that are cut-in so that area is not on the main roof, just below it). They didn?t do those two small portions. When I called to request that they complete the two smaller portions, they said, ?We don?t have to do that.? They said it wasn?t in the original quote, but the quote said ?Entire Roof,? so it was a part of that. I had even clarified that with the person who gave the estimate, but time had lapsed between the estimate and the work being done, and they didn?t seem to remember saying that the smaller portions were included. Then the roof was leaking. There was no visible hole, so the insurance company said to call them to come back. They came out and gave me a story about the board, etc., that wasn?t their fault. In truth, they actually hadn?t installed fascia. I had to hire another contractor to install the fascia. The water kept coming in, each time it rained. I had another contractor in my house doing other work, who saw that there was water damage in my kitchen and powder room. He was able to confirm that it was from the two smaller areas of roofing that had not been done per our original agreement. Additionally, I have not gotten the certification documents, receipt, or warranty information, despite 3 phone calls to the office, speaking to the same employee each time to request that. Please note that, pursuant to Mr. O'Neill's claim that this 'review' was posted 'a few years ago[,]' that is not true. This is the first time that I have ever written a review on City Wide Roofing. I have tried, in vain, to contact the company for the aforementioned problems, without receiving any response from the company. This assertion that my claim is one that had been made at an earlier time is, in fact, symptomatic of City Wide Roofing's, vis a vie Mr. O'Neill, to ignore serious flaws in the company's integrity, willingness to stand by their work as well as their standard operating procedures. Since the writing of this review and Citywide's failure to contact me and to provide me with a copy of my certification and/or receipt of payment received, I have had to call in a roofer because of the persistent leaks and damage to my home. The roofer's report states that when he got up onto the roof, he found that not one inch had been flashed -- only 'gunk' was used to close the seams which are now opening and causing leaks.
Description of Work: I have used their services 3 times before, on different properties that I own. Despite previous problems, I had chosen to work with them again. I purchased another home and had them do the inspection. They said that I needed a new roof. They gave me a quote, and came and did the roof.

It is with great disappointment that I write this email, as I am not looking to frivolously bad mouth this company. However, I do feel the need to report this to other homeowners: My frustration stems largely from continually being ignored by the company after the initial work was performed. City Wide put on a new roof and new decks to my home in November 2007. I have the detailed invoice that promises a "15-year maintenance free roof" plus "A Frame Roof installed 30-year G.A.F. Timberline shingles." Two weeks ago, I found a leak and called the company. I have spoken to the phone operator Niki a few times now, and she keeps promising that someone will call me. However, no one has done so. On Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 Niki told me that someone would come by my house "tomorrow." I waited ALL DAY yesterday (Nov. 13, 2012) for someone to arrive, but no one did. Nor has anyone from City Wide attempted to contact me. This is particularly disappointing because this is not the first leak since City Wide replaced my roof. I had another leak in 2011, four years after they replaced my roof, and was met with similar indifference. I did not report this incident at the time because I was giving the company the benefit of the doubt. I didn't expect to find a leak, but expected that it would be handled appropriately, as the company had initially promised. In 2011, too, I encountered the same problems with trying to get someone to return my call and fix the leak. After making numerous calls, Niki suggested I call John Hummel at 800-341-3677 before 10am to make sure I received a service call. In 2011 it took many days of daily calling to finally talk with Mr. Hummel and get my leak fixed. I echo the other reviewer who says "the responsiveness of the company is consistently poor, taking inordinate amounts of time to respond to repair needs and sending work crews out with no advance notice to the homeowner." That reviewer gave the company a "B" rating in Punctuality and Professionalism, and the company offices doing the scheduling (unsatisfactory). My grade is an "F" because of continued frustration to get service. And, now, after this second leak in five years, I fear the quality of workmanship may be poor. I would hate to think so, considering my initial experience in 2007 was extremely positive with Ed O'Neill and his team. Unfortunately, follow up, has been quite the opposite. To be clear: I do not relish writing such a negative review. But at this time, after $8,325 paid to this company, with a 15-year promise, I am extremely disappointed--not only for having two leaks in five years, but the company's overall handling of the situation.

BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!! Porch is now leaking again. I was told that is normal. So much for having a 15 year warranty. They never properly closed up the porch and actually billed me the additional $650 for something that was to be included in the original work order. They did not repair the big gap/hole around the edge of the attic window which was causing water to seep in under my roofing. They said they could repair it for more money and I should have used the proper terminology to explain the problem. These guys did not install grandulated white rubber roofing. They promise to come out and resolve the issues but they often were no call/no shows. They send nice emails but never return actually resolved the issues. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Especially not to a young landlord who is just learning the ropes. Lesson learned some companies just will take advantage of you and rip you off. I have taken pictures of all the issues with these unresolved problems. I have tried my best to follow up with Citywide to get them to correct the issues but they keep blowing me off. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!! ******UPDATED Oct 1, 2012: RESPONSE to CITYWIDE********** To whom it may concern, I paid my bill as agreed. You did not install granulated white rubber on my roof as agreed. You offer a 15 year warranty but did not respond to the report of the leak. If I use another roofing company it will void my warranty. Therefore I will take the photos and documentation and see you in court. You will either resolve the problem or pay for the loss. Thank you
Description of Work: I had some issues with the front porch leaking badly and debris falling down. I also had damage from to the Top Attic roof from hurricane Irene. So I called Citywide Roofing to get everything taken care of. Here is my 1st work order $ 2500- Front Porch Roof ● Remove and dispose of the entire roof down to the decking ● Install new plywood to the porch roof ● Install new base sheet to the porch roof ● Install torchdown granulated white rubber to the entire roof ● Install new 3” drop tube equipped with 3” downspout and elbows ● Install new white aluminum capping on edges of roof ● Cement and fabric all new flashings and seams on porch roof to make water tight Upper Bay Roof ● Install torchdown granulated white rubber to the entire roof ● Install new white aluminum capping on edges of roof ● Cement and fabric all new flashings and seams on upper bay roof to make water tight Top Attic Roof ● Install torchdown granulated white rubber to the entire roof ● Install new white aluminum capping on edges of roof ● Cement and fabric all new flashings and seams on upper bay roof to make water tight While they were doing the work I was concerned that the ceiling of the porch would be exposed. So I asked if the could close it up and they said they could but I would need to paint it. They charged an additional $650.

I am sorry there is such confusion. Our contract was for the porch roof not the porch ceiling. You wanted the ceiling closed in which is more work and material hence the additional cost. You don't work for free why do you expect us to? You were told before the work was done that you would have to have it caulked and painted. Now you complain that the ceiling is not caulked and painted. The hole on the third floor window is a siding and capping issue not a roofing issue. All the work stated in the work order was done completely as written in a professional manner. Any work asked for after the workers arrive is always an additional charge

Four weeks ago, I contacted City Wide regarding a report of nail heads popping up through the front, shingle portion of our roof that was made by a home inspector who evaluated our home as part of a prospective sale. At that time, the lady on the phone assured me that although their work crews were understaffed due to a seasonal business slowdown, someone would call and be out to address the issue sometime that week, she just could not give me an exact date and time. The following week, having heard nothing and seen no one, I called back, again receiving assurances that someone would call back and/or come out shortly. This was repeated for a total of 4 weeks until today when I received a phone call from the workman tasked with the job while I was out running errands, saying he was on his way and would be there in 20 minutes. I expedited my return, and the workman showed up as he had said. He performed the repairs expeditiously, reporting that the damage was nowhere near as significant as the home inspector had led us to believe (I do not own a 24 foot ladder, so could not verify the inspector's claims after the fact). He gave me a receipt for the work, and promised that they would be happy to come back as needed if anything else arose. When the roof was installed in October 2007 we had a similar problem with lack of communication from the company as to when the work was going to be performed. We were told they would be out in a given week, but the workmen arrived and began work with no notice. As such, all of the windows in the house were open, allowing large quantities of black dust from the removal of the previous roof layers (there were 6 layers! Not the fault of City Wide, obviously, but wow!) in to the house, coating everything in the house. While the work was of good quality, competitively priced, and punctually completed, a simple phone call the previous evening saying "we will be starting work at your house tomorrow morning" would have prevented a lot of mess and hard feelings. At the time, we figured it was just "one of those things" but with our recent experience it seemed worth mentioning, as a pattern of poor customer communication. In summary: the work quality is good. The workmen are efficient, courteous, responsive, punctual, and professional. But the responsiveness of the company is consistently poor, taking inordinate amounts of time to respond to repair needs and sending work crews out with no advance notice to the homeowner. The "B" ratings in Punctuality and Professionalism are a composite of the workman himself (excellent) and the company offices doing the scheduling (unsatisfactory).
Description of Work: Today's visit was a warranty service call on a roof installed new in October 2007. The workman from City Wide hammered in some nail heads that were reported to be popping up through the shingle portion of the roof, and applied clear caulk to the resulting holes in the shingles. He was courteous and responsive and performed the repairs with a minimum of fuss.

Overall, I am really pleased with these guys and their job, If only I can post a picture of my new porch roof, it looks amazing! I had received a call from Ed letting me know what time they were arriving. He directed the workers in full detail - explaining to them the problem I've been having with my leak and they did their job to the fullest, I was poking my head to catch a glimpse of what was being done and had a couple questions while they continued to work. I would highly recommend these guys and Ed, thank you for your honesty - keep up the good work!
Description of Work: The estimator "Ed" came to my home and advised me of the services that was needed for my porch roof since I've been having a leak. He was completely honest, and gave me a great price. Sure thing Ed was here with his workers - where he showed them ( Luis & Anthony) exactly what needed to be done. The job consisted of terminating the siding for proper flashing, installing a modified bitumen rubber roof; new edge capping; rubber wall flashing; cement & fabric; coil and brake custom metal trim on the siding; caulk for the window; and cleaning up after the work was complete.

The crew appeared and began work as scheduled, finishing the job in one day. The work proceeded as estimated and the crew appeared experienced and capable. I was satisfied with the job at the time and paid what I believe was a fair price in full. During heavy storms with high winds we have experienced leaks in two places which had been perennial problems. These were a main reason for having the new roof applied. I discussed the problem points prior to the work and was assured they would be corrected. Over the past year I have called more than half a dozen times to schedule repairs as provided in the guarantee. I have asked that the repair person call me so I can point out the issues and have them corrected. The staff has always been very courteous but I never receive the callback for an appointment. At this point I have a bedroom that cannot be refinished because of the threat of additional water damage. And I have occasional dripping at the skylight. My original complete satisfaction with CityWide has been replaced with total dissatisfaction at the lack of responsiveness to back up their work. I chose them originally due to their Angies List ratings and hope that this review will generate a response. CityWide dispatched a repair person immediately upon my review above. He was courteous and applied patch cement and caulk in several places. I have upgraded my review scores based on this activity.
Description of Work: CityWide removed two levels of flat roof and applied a new fiberglass base sheet and rubber roof to both areas. Some decking replacement was needed and performed. The upper roof contained a skylight which was removed and replaced as part of the job.

The upper roof seems good and the skylights are are nice and tight. Mostly the job went quickly and OK, though the crew that was sent was not great about clean-up. I had to call them back when my neighbor complained they had left debris in his gutter - which they did promptly, but I'm still finding roofing bits in my yards and gardens. I didn't realized until much later that they had failed to replace a gutter that is in a tricky location near a bunch of cable and and wires. To their credit they came back more than a year later and replaced the missing gutter, though not in the same configuration as before. Overall I'd say they get the job done and so far everything seems tight and not leaking. The price was fair and since they are a local company they can be counted on for follow-up repairs and service.
Description of Work: I had a total roof and gutter replacement on my 3 story twin and garage. Removal of old asphalt and cedar shingles, new underlay and new shingles, gutters and downspouts. I Also contracted to have two skylights added to the attic.

I selected this company because of the Angie's List ratings at that time & because they bid the lowest. When the work was complete and the worker came to the front door to collect the final payment, he wouldn't look me in the eye, which made me suspicious. The bill was higher than I expected, but I paid it. The next day, after looking over the estimate again, I stopped payment on the check & told the company why. They had put "tar paper" over both porch roofs, which was what was originally on the back porch, but the front porch was previously shingled & "tar paper" is not appropriate or attractive for the front of the house. They came back & shingled the front porch, but there were a lot of extra charges for wood to replace rotted wood. They explained they forgot to state in the estimate there would be extra charges for it. Even so, I felt the cost for wood was exorbitant, and a just a way to maximize profits. Also, the chimney cap was off & just sitting on the flat part of the main roof. They claimed they never touched it. I asked them to put it back on the chimney. They never did that. I did finally pay, but in February of this year, I had a lot of weatherization work done by another company. In the process of insulating the back enclosed porch, they discovered holes in the back roof where City Wide had just put "tar paper" over several holes without at least informing me. It appears this was one reason the worker wouldn't look me in the eye that day. If I had been informed, I would have approved the appropriate repairs, which is what I did with the weatherization company. I called City Wide about this, and John said he couldn't believe his workers did this. He was supposed to come by to look at it but never did. The ceiling was exposed to the roof for 2 days after I called him until that part of the new work was completed. I took photos.
Description of Work: Installed new roof over front porch, pitched section of main roof & enclosed back porch.

O.K. Where do I start with this one ? First of all let's get the material complaint straightened out . We used top quality modified bitumen granulated rubber , with a 75# fiberglass base sheet . Not "tar paper " as you stated . As for the wood , you saw one section of roof ,we worked on 3 different sections , and wood was used on all 3 . The section you saw had rafters that were sistered . You cant sister rafters without removing the roof deck and replacing it . Also, it is stated in the original estimate that wood will be extra , you say it wasn't , which is incorrect . Now for your complaint about the appearance of the work . When the estimate was done you wanted to "keep costs down". You were given the cost of shingles and the cost of modified bitumen rubber . The rubber is a good roof but is less expensive than shingles . You chose the rubber roof and when you didnt like the way it looked started complaining about our workmanship . We gave you another estimate to have the rubber removed and shingles installed , at a greatly reduced price , which you accepted , and paid for . Now for the rest of the story . My employees are good guys , the reason they wouldn't look at you is because of the way you treated them . They really didn't want anything to do with you . They didn't take your chimney cap off so they didn't put it back on . Most customers that wouldn't have been a problem . As for the electric from the neighbor , it is my impression that they recieved permission to use it . If not , and your neighbor has an issue with it , they can contact us and we will rectify the situation . Ed O'Neill
