I hired them to replace a flatroom on my row home in Philly. They were responsive for the initial request and sold me on the full roof replacement, as it came with a "15-year warranty"... It's three years later, and for the past year I've been trying to reach them for regular maintenance. They have been difficult to reach, when I have connected, they've promised to come out and never do, and in my last call, they advised that I don't need maintenance. Unfortunately, now, my roof is leaking, and again, I've called several times and they have promised to come out but never do .We now are forced to "void" our "warranty" and pay someone else to address the leaking / faulty roof. I found them on Angie's list and I'm not sure how they maintain a high rating, as I've found others who have also had the same experience.

Everything went well. They arrived on time and did good work. There was only one issue with the work, but it was minor. It was simply a miscommunication between the owner and the workers.

I soon found rain water from the roof glanced off the box, avoided the downspout and splashed directly into my patio and my next door neighbors patio. I had been calling the estimator to ask him to straighten the downspout since it was practically leaning on the soffit, which had been the site of leaks that found their way into my bedroom in the past. These leaks were their reason for replacement of an existing copper eave box.He always said "I'll take care of it" but in fact did nothing. When my calls received no response for three months I again called the estimator to tell him of the latest problem, and he responded with a tirade saying that each time I called I had a different "story". Then he hung up. He was correct in a way since the initial problem was one of a leaning downspout, and then it soon became a problem of improper roof drainage. I waited for several weeks , and getting no response from the owner or the estimator, I called Angie's list.I also called another roofer who addressed the problem by installing a copper 4 inch eave box and a 4 inch downspout which has solved the problem. I paid him essentially the same $700 that City Wide Roofing charged to just replace the eave box. Eventually I got a call from an employee of City Wide Roofing to say that he needed access to my roof. When I called to talk to him I got the estimator instead who recognized my voice. He told me that this employee had already gone up on my roof and "cleaned out the downspout". I had to tell him that just the day before the downspout and eave box had been replaced and he couldn't have found anything to unclog. I also told him that I was through with him and his company.
Description of Work: I wrote a letter to the owner of City Wide Roofing, and to the estimator who is the cause for this complaint. Their company had installed an "small aluminum scudder" or eave box and in doing so they had to bend the downspout to reach this newly installed box.
I live in a flat roof twin, My roof was aging badly and leaking in 2 spots soon to be more no doubt, I needed a reliable trustworthy roofer to take care of my problem. I contracted for 30 years and would have done it myself but now have 5 herniations in my spine that prevent me from doing the simplest tasks anymore. I found City Wide Roofers online through a google search for Philadelphia area roofers. I saw they were on Angies list and decided to check them out. I was pleased with the reports I read and decided that I would use them. Jimmy O'Connell the estimator came the same day I called for an estimate. He was polite and professional beyond what is typical of contractors. The work was scheduled to begin the next day! (at my request, my wife was away and I wanted it done before she returned). The first crew came and laid the new rubber material and sealed it with the torch as perfectly as I could have asked of anyone. 2 days later the finish crew showed up and installed the flashing around the edges, sealed the inner edge with fiber tape and mastic as required then moved onto replace my eave boxes which were original from the1920s. While installing the boxes I asked one of the men to take care of a small area of siding that was cut short and no doubt was allowing water to enter, he did it with a smile and asked if there were any other trouble areas. They sealed the boxes with caulk as required and a few other areas they found that I didnt see. Upon completion the crew cleaned up all scraps of rubber, flashing, roofing tar and whatever else they saw that didnt belong on my property.Am I ranting? YES! these guys were terrific!!!I'd use them again in a heartbeat and recommend them to anyone needing roofwork. As if that was all good enough, They provided a $175.00 coupon for anyone doing a full roof! woo-hoo!! Total cost after coupon $1625.00 and a few glasses of water and snacks. :) GOOD WORK AND SERVICE DESERVE THE HIGHEST RECOGNITION! A GOOD NAME AND REPUTATION IS BETTER THAN GOLD.
Description of Work: Rubber roof installed on upper and lower roof areas. new eave boxes installed in both areas. Flashing installed around both roof edges. Caulk where needed Clean up

My flat roof was over 12 years old, I work from home and my office is directly under the roof. So I called City Wide to take a look at it. I have a very high roof that requires a 48-ft. ladder, and I didn't want a problem in the winter when access would be difficult. Nor did I want water coming in and pouring onto my computer. And since I have only lived in the house for a few years, I had no idea how good the previous contractor or the roof was. Jimmy C. came over from City Wide, and said the roof had blisters and was mushy and needed replacement. I asked him for a photo so I could see the roof's condition for myself, and he told me my neighbor had workmen up on his deck and I could see it from there. I went up, looked at the roof from the deck and agreed to have it replaced. (Note: if I had City Wide just come to examine the roof without having the work done, there would have been a charge of $100 or $200, I forget which. I understood the reason, It. took three men to come to my house and put the extra-high ladder up to the roof.) Jimmy gave me a price of $1800, and based upon a previous experience with City Wide I said OK. The workmen did the roof in about 5 hours. One of them had been at my home in January 2010 replacing a roof below my deck that was subcontracted by Best Handyman, and I had been very pleased by the meticulous work that I saw them doing. So I'm hoping this roof was just as well done. When Jimmy C. first came to look at the roof, I told him I had gotten the name from Angie's List. After I received the written estimate by mail, I remembered to ask about the discount City Wide advertises on Angie's List's web site. Jimmy said he had included the discount in his estimate. SUGGESTIONS: Going forward, I believe that if City Wide is giving this discount, it should note the amount on the invoice, so you know you are receiving it. I also think they should consider taking a photo of the roof, so a consumer can see the condition for himself or herself before going forward with the work. Bottom Line: City Wide was punctual, scheduled the job quickly at my request, and appears to have done a very good job. As a result, I also I recommended them to my brother.
Description of Work: I had my 12-year old flat roof replaced by City Wide Roofing. They installed a white granulated rubber roof extending to both sides of the party walls, plus flashing around two skylights, new capping on the edge of the roof, and a new 4" wall box for draining.

The experience was okay but I expect better follow up when a problem occurs.
Description of Work: City wide laid a flat roof on the side balcony of my house. They were reasonable with price and showed up on time. After the roof making it throught the rough winter that we had with no leaks I was impressed. But early this year in the Spring of 2011 we had a heavy rain storm. The roof that had not even been a year old started to leak. I had to call several times to get city wide to come out. When they came out they said it was a calking issue. Meanwhile my renovated room on the inside was wet from the leak. They said nothing about what happened to the inside of my house. The roof they installed leak and that should not have happened. I hae a 15 year guarantee not to leak. So what happened City wide. I picked this company becuase of the 'A' rating. Will I use them again......I am not sure. I need for them to understand what they promised, did not occur. "No leaks or problems is what they promised"....my rook leaked.

I called Citywide because they had an A rating on Angie's list and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. The estimator came out, looked at the roof, and gave me an estimate for repair which he said would be guarantied for three years. He also offered an estimate for a new roof which he said would come with a ten year guaranty. Since I am selling my home I chose the repair and it was scheduled and completed on the date promised. First heavy rain, you guessed it, a small but noticable leak in my bedroom. I called immediately and the owner said someone would be out. Next rain.... same spot leaking, but much worse - needed to put a bucket under the leak (which was right over my bed). Called the owner who said someone had been out and caulked my windows. I said that no one had made their presence known and the leak was coming through the roof so why did they caulk the windows? I asked him to send someone to repair the roof and to let me know when they were there. Next rainstorm (of which this year produced many) the leak is even worse. Called again and he became extemeley belligerent. I asked him to honor the guaranty and he said that he never gave guaranties on repairs for flat roofs. I responded that I had the estimate and the written guaranty in my hand provided by his employee. He became even ruder and said, this guy may not work for me much longer, you can't guaranty repairs on flat roofs. After a number of further pleas and phone calls. they finally sent someone out and the roof seems to be holding up through the last two storms but I am not holding my breath. I cannot be more emphatic than to say I would never use this company for anything again!

This customer expects miracles with her roof, as she states she is selling her house and against our estimators advise refused to install a new roof, basically letting the new home owner deal with the problems (nice) then calls complaining that the repair had not worked and I sent someone to again try to repair her roof and again it rained and once again she calls i explain that in all reality she needed a new roof but at her insistence we did the repair, anyway it was her skylight which needed to be sealed and I'm sure that inspector will advise the new buyer to replace the roof. So if your in the market for a new home in the South Philly area, buyer beware because you never know what people will try in today's market to sell their house!

We paid to have our roof replaced, and while no one was home, they slapped a coat of paint on it, and said the work was done. We confronted them, and they admitted the work hadn't been done. They came back the next day and did a small repair to a part of the roof that was sagging, instead of replacement. I will never use them again, and hope no one else will either unless you don't care about your roof. (I would be happy to provide all the correspondence and inspection reports to back up my claims)

I contacted quite a few contractors. Some of the estimates were extremely high. City Wide Roofing, Ed O'Neill specically, looked at my roof and gave me a good price. He had a high rating on Angie's List. He gave me a rubber maintenance free roof to the entire roof touching all walls and parallel walls. Everything was done very nicely. He also secured the side gutter with hidden hangers on the north corner of the roof, changing the location of downspout from the backside of my house for a prettier appeal.

They are the most honest roofers I?ve ever met! They lost the founder of the company recently, Ed. However, those that took over the company are doing him proud! We had a difficult winter and I asked the new owners whether or not I needed to replace my dam buster box. I was advised that it may be a good idea, but was in no way an emergency. They offered to check out the current box and see if it needed replacing. Axel was sent out to take a look. He offered his honest opinion to replace the unit, given the weather. Due to weather conditions, we had to reschedule our appointment a couple times (for which they apologized-despite not being their direct fault). Once finally scheduled, Axel showed up on time and let me know he was here. He immediately got to work. He also inspected the roof for damage, cleaned off some ice and repaired a small defect without any charge or specific direction from me. He also replaced the dam buster box he came for. Due to his high skill, he ended up finishing ahead of schedule. He described the work performed in detail and checked for any questions. Axel was very polite and informed me to contact them with any questions or concerns and thanked me for my patience during scheduling. Axel was very cleanly, pleasant, and professional and I felt 100% comfortable with him at my home. He really went above and beyond for me. I would absolutely have City Wide back anytime and recommend them to anyone!

The men came out and installed the roof per the contract. The workmen were reasonably professional and on several occasions were visited by the man who had provided the estimate. Upon completion of the work, I had other workmen re-plaster the ceiling of the back bedroom. Approximately 1 year later, we began to notice staining and some moisture is the area where we had previously had a leak. We made several calls to the company and they sent men out in a timely fashion. These men simply camer out, put up a ladder, and patched the roof somewhere. They did not ring the doorbell to announce their presence and did not ask to see the exact spot where leaking and staining had occurred. In October of this year (two years into the guarenteed period), the roof began to leak badly in two new areas (actually dripping into the room and requiring a bucket to catch the water) and into the previous area of the leaking. We made the first call to report this and ask for repair in early November 2010. We received no response. We have made at least 3 additional calls; 1 such call was directed to a "Johnny", who was said to be the salesperson. We've received assurances from the girl answering the phone that "someone would be out" but no one has come out to the house, called, or contacted us in any way. The problem seems to be widespread material failure in a number of areas. There is extensive seeping through the roofing material, and the leaks and moisture have occurred in both of the bedrooms covered by the roof as well as in the hall, and in the seams where the roof meets the walls. These leaks have resulted in plaster danage to the ceilings under the roof in two bedrooms and in the hall, which have growth worse over the time we've been calling City Wide without a response. As of today, we will be faced with expensive repair of the plaster ceilings in 2 rooms and a hall. City Wide's failure to respond to our calls has resulted on worse damage to the plaster inside over the course of a wet November and December. I would caution homeowners seeking a roofer to avoid these people who are not responsive and whose roofing materials seem to be deficient. There is no follow-up and based on our experience with the last leak, no attempt to discuss the issue to target the areas in question. (Last year the men came out, repaired something without even collecting information to focus on the leaking place, and patched something.) The collateral damage in the plaster inside my house will be very expensive to repair. Homeowners should keep in mind with City Wide Roofing Inc that while the price may be lower than other estimates, the new roof and the new materials don't seem to hold up over time - not even for 1 or 2 years.
Description of Work: The following services were performed on the above-referenced date: installation of maintenance-free granulated rubber roofing; installation of closed copper drainbox (24 inches long); installation of party walls, flashing, and edge metal; reseal skylight and siding on back wall; reflash chimney with rubber; apply roof cement and flashing where needed; installation of 2.5 foot piece of round spout to side of house; reseal chimney on front of house; new rubber roofing on third floor. City Wide roofing Inc guarenteed the work for 15 years against defects inmaterial and workmanship.

The material used on the property is a rubber membrane and it is impossible to have seepage through that material. You called for a service call, for a leak, then placed restrictions on when the service call could be preformed. Your call was directed to my voicemail, and the same day I received your call, I sent out one of my guys. It seems as though your wall is the problem rather than the roof itself. We addressed the leak issue nonetheless. If you want a service call, please do not place restrictions on the work you want done. Call, describe where the leak is, and let me address it ASAP.

It was ok. I am big on getting a quick response, and they were good at communicating and following up. It was a BIG job and they got the permit, disposed of tons of debris, and knocked out the job quickly. We have a historical house, so the final appearance of the roof was a bit less refined than I would have liked, but you get what you pay for (we had a quote of almost $18,000 for the same job). If you hire this company make sure you spell out each detail of the job, exactly the materials you want used, and get a quote on that. I had given them another quote as an example of what we needed done (so it would be in roofer's terms) and it did not include new gutters on the back extension of the house, or the front porch. I explicitly asked for gutters on the porch, but did not mention the back, so we have brand new gutters everywhere except the back of the house... If you want a decent looking roof for a bit less money, go for this company. If you want superior quality, you will probably have to pay more to someone else.

Spelling out exactly what you want from a contractor is very good advise and I recommend the same thing, let them know what you want the final work to look like. Don't call a contractor and only tell them some of the things you want and then expect them to figure the rest out. There has to be communication between home owner and contractor through all phases of the project. Get samples of material being used pick a color that will complement the property and above all else make sure the contractor understands without a doubt exactly what YOU want. Sorry we didn't meet all your expectations, thank you for using City Wide.

They were prompt in getting someone out as soon as possible to do an estimate and the work. The receptionist did butcher my name though. Wrong first name and last name spelled wrong. John the estimator was nice. The concern I have is that the 2 workers that came out did not speak any English. That is not a concern in and of itself, but it does make me suspicious that illegal immigrants are being used (note: not an accusation just a concern). I gave them an A for quality. My roof is not leaking after a couple of heavy rain and wind storms, but I do not have a ladder to go up and inspect the roof my self. Not that I would know what I was looking at anyway. The other concern I have is that I had asked about a receipt and guarantee after the work was completed. I was told after our check cleared we would receive them. Well the check cleared in the amount of time it takes to clear and we never received the proper paperwork. I had to call them on 12/03/10 and ask for it.
Description of Work: During a heavy wind storm part of the flashing around the top edge of the house came loose and was hanging by one nail. We had bought our house approximately 9 years ago and the roof was 10 years old then. City Wide roofing came out repaird the flashing and installed a 15 year granulated bitumen rubber roof system.

City Wide Roofing requires all of it's employees to have at least two forms of ID before being employed here also our payroll company requires picture id and social security card since 911 everyone has crackdown on "illegal immigrants" City Wide does not and has not employed illegals, just because someone doesn't speak the same language as you doesn't mean they are illegal, to have such a "concern" is ignorant. First you say it's not a concern then you put a note, saying it is a concern, which is it? I'm sure the well read Angies list customers can read between the lines. Your work was done in a timely manner and done well, yes I agree your name was mispelled and I apologize for that mistake and your warranty should have been sent, and as of 12-07-10 it has been sent. I called this company based upon its rating here on Angie's List and basically, I've been robbed. I hired them to fix a leak on my roof deck. They did a visual inspection, said the problem was with the material the builder put on the roof deck that was permitting water penetration. They removed the material, put down rolled roofing shingle type material with heavy recycled tire interlocking panels as a surface material on top of the rolled roofing. They also replaced the deck drain and the downspout pipe. Everything was fine and then weeks later, same leaks. They came back out, said it must be: (1) the deck door threshold or maybe (2) leaking water pipes in the ceiling (of which there are NONE) or (3) building settlement. Within the original warranty period I called the owner, Rafi, to complain and he promised they would "make me happy" without condition. I indicated I was hiring a contractor to take out the ceiling under the deck to find the leak and it might take some time but I would be back in touch. Ultimatetly I had someone do just that, plus do what City Wide never did, run water on the deck in various ways. And the leak was found and it was in the very drain scupper City Wide installed when they replaced the roof drain. I called City Wide three times and sent an email from this site asking the owner, Rafi, to contact me and to do what he promised. On my first call the lady who answered even reiterated that the company wanted to "make me happy". However, absolutely no response from the owner despoite my two additional calls and email. I feel I might as well have been mugged for the $2500.00. Very unprofessional and from my experience I conclude they are only interested in taking your money, not finding and fixing the problem. I realize the company will have the opportunity to respond so the question they need to answer is did they fix the leak problem they were hired and paid to fix? The answer should be obvious in their wholesale failure to even give the courtesy of a return phone call to my three attempts to make contact with the owner. To sum up this unfortunate experience, the deck still leaks the honest answer from this company would be No, they fully failed to fix the problem they were hired and paid handsomely to fix. I can't believe this List gives them an A rating. Caveat Emptor and that applies to the reader too.

This customer called us to say his roof has started leaking. When we wanted to respond he informed us that he was going on vacation and he would let us know when he was returning, however; henever did inform us, we made several attempt to address this issue with no result. John Hammond, Supervisor

Best quote - offered options for repair vs replace, offered discount for multiple jobs, said they would try to schedule in one week at the latest and were able to do the job 2 days from when contract was signed - brought in a crew of ~ 10 people and were in and out in the same day - cleaned up well - one minor piece of damage caused , but they made it right by sending out a subcontractor to fix it the following day at no additional cost.
Description of Work: torched down 3 contiguous roofs that were previously leaking

Another roofer I found on this site, Tomes & Sons, came out and actually got on the roof. He found some failed caulk and an open flue in an unused chimney. He inspected the siding and found that it had been properly lined and was not likely the cause of the leak. He agreed that a foolproof fix would be re-shingling the mansard and re-lining the gutters, but suggested fixing the leak for now and doing the shingles in spring when they would adhere better. From all the positive posts on this site about Citywide, I'm sure they would have done a fine job, but I'm going with the guys who were more interested in fixing the problem at hand while willing to wait on the expensive work until they can guarantee a better outcome.
Description of Work: I called multiple times to get someone to commit to a date to come out and look at the roof. The guy who showed up was very friendly, but he did not even get up on the roof to investigate the leak. Instead, he looked up and told my that you can't have siding on a mansard roof. Well, the siding had been on for 20+ years and the leak just a couple months, so I was skeptical. He gave me a competitive quote for replacing the whole mansard and gutters. I was ready to do the work, since it was on my list anyway, but it bothered me that he didn't find the cause of the actual leak.

Sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied with our estimators suggestion about how to fix your roof for good, we try to take care of the problem all together instead of worrying about weather a repair will hold up for a certain lengh of time, especially with the winter months coming. In most case if the repair is performed and it begins to leak before the real work is scheduled the customer is mad at the contractor because 1. there's more damage to the interior and 2. they wasted money on the repair! The way we like to do things is, right the first time. Again sorry we couldn't serve you.

I was very impressed. He came out on a Tuesday and were out the next day doing the work. I was very pleased and they cleaned up well after themselves.
Description of Work: They put a new roof on top of my house as well as the roof over the porch and the bay window over the porch.
