 + -1 moreI was trying to install a new light fixture, but when I opened the box for the light it was a mess of wires. It caused the lights in an unrelated room to go out. I called Jim in to help and he determined that the old knob and tube wiring had cracked its insulation and the connections in the box were getting undone. He immediately fixed it by reconnecting the wires and reinsulating them with new insulation. The job was done fast and professionally and the cost was very reasonable. He even installed the crossbar for the new light fixture for me at no extra charge.
Description of Work: Cleaned up junction box, reinsulated wires and reconnected connections, also installed crossbar for new light fixture.

He is one of the few service people I've worked with who shows up on time for appointments or calls if he will be delayed, he called to confirm when work would begin, he and his son showed up on time, and did all the work we agreed to. But -- there is actually more here. He discovered that the wiring in one of the light switches wasn't capped properly, and he went thru and checked all of them, showed them to me and then added caps where needed. The additional charge was reasonable and worth it to me to avert any possible damage inside these switches over time. I have a quote from Jim to install 3 ceiling fans and will schedule that work to be done in the next month. J.B. Electric has become my go to Electricians.
Description of Work: Installed outside pole light, new fan in half bath, replaced outside floodlight for backyard and motion light over garage, reconfigured switches for lights for patio and backyard to have them all in one location.

 + 1 moreVery well! Jim called me right back and stopped by to give me an estimate shortly thereafter. He and his assistant arrived on time and worked non-stop without breaks (or smoking!) until the job was completed.They were friendly and professional. I will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: They installed three exterior lights, two of which required rewiring. In the master bathroom, they installed a ceiling fan, a new vanity light, a new switch and a new outlet. They also installed a door bell and an insulated cover for a switch that was close to a shower.

He offered a fair estimate, we didn't even feel the need to get two others. He took his time understanding what kind of work we wanted and offered valuable suggestions to make the work go smoothly. When it was time to start work, he was on time, took his time completing each project correctly, and was very good at cleaning up after the work was finished. I didn't have to go behind him and wipe things down or vacuum. I was very pleased and will definitely hire him again for any electrical need. I have already recommended him to another friend looking for an electrician.
Description of Work: James Boden remove old three unit door bell system, installed new wired door bell with all parts included, fixed loose wiring in dining room light, added 15 amp and 20 amp to circuit box, installed new outlet in built-in bed unit, solved the problem of a fan/light unit not working, and advised a safer light for the crawl spaces.

 + -1 moreI called JB electric and Jim came later that same day. Within an hour, he was able to diagnose and fix the problem. Apparently, water had leaked from the outside electrical box down into my fuse box causing the wiring to rust. The main breaker was bad and needed to be replaced. Jim had a new one in his truck so I didn't have to wait for the part. He also trimmed the rusted ends of the wires so that they were clean. He located the origin of the leak and fixed that too so that I won't have any more leakage in the future. JB was very friendly and personable as well as professional. He explained everything that he was doing as he went along. He made some recommendations for work that may need to be done in the future but saved me money by not doing any more than was necessary at this time. I highly recommend JB electric and will definitely call them any time that I need electric work done.
Description of Work: I purchased a house two months ago and ran into some trouble when I tried to run my major applicances. When I turned on the central air conditioning or tried to use my washer and dryer at the same time, the electricity would go out in random rooms of the house. I checked the fuse box and no individual fuses were off- only the main breaker was.

Description of Work: Came out on a Sunday afternoon, diagnosed problem as power not coming into the meter on one of the two external lines and advised calling the power company to fix it. While here he checked our circuit breakers, tightened loose connections, fixed a problem circuit, put a wire nut on a wire that had simply been taped together, and recaulked the seal around our electric meter outside (which very much needed it). The power company came a couple of hours later and fixed the external problem on our drop line (? the line from the main power lines to our house) which restored our power.

 + -1 moreMr. Boden was very responsive in coming out to give me a free estimate. He discussed various options for running the wiring and agreed to use the method that worked best for me. He only quoted me for the work I requested, and did not try to sell me additional upgrades - which I appreciated. He e-mailed me the quote, and got me on the schedule quickly when I agreed to move ahead with the job. They showed up on time, got the job done quickly for the price quoted. The also cleaned up when they were done.
Description of Work: James Boden and his son installed two new circuits in our kitchen to solve a problem with the toaster, refrigerator, and microwave all being on the same circuit. They also installed new four new electrical outlets. The installed breakers in the existing electrical box, ran wire from the basement to the attic, and then fished it into the kitchen walls. They also found a leak that was letting water into the breaker panel and they sealed that before it could cause serious damage.

The work was completed on the day promised and for the price quoted. I will definitely need more electrical work done to my house in the near future, and I will definitely call J.B. Electric for a quote. A very friendly and professional contractor, with reasonable prices.
Description of Work: I needed the entrance cable reattached to the side of my house after the February snowstorms had knocked it loose. I also wanted to have the cable encased in a protective plastic sleeve.

 + 0 moreIt went very well. Rich is a personable guy and easy to get along with while he's working on your house. He does good work and he charges fair prices. Unlike many other electricians, he will patch the holes that he drills into your walls to get the access he needs to fish wires. He also is very safety conscious. For example, whenever his is drilling holes or making dust he wears a respirator to protect his lungs from whatever nasty c*** might be in your old house. Which is good because it shows that he thinks about these kind of things and mad sure that my pregnant wife wasn't around when that kind of dust was being generated. He also cleans up thoroughly.
Description of Work: We bought a fixer upper that needed some serious electrical work. I had four electricians come out to give quotes. The JB Boden estimate was the second cheapest and I got the impression from Rich that the work would be done well. It was. Rich and his brother came out and did a stand up job. They: * replaced my old panel with a larger panel * wired the kitchen to code (we were moving it to a different room and needed several new circuits) * removed old wires from the old kitchen * installed a new box for a ceiling fan * fixed a box so a ceiling fan could be hung * installed a bathroom exhaust fan * replaced the outlet in the bathroom with a GFCI * installed an attic ventilation fan * moved 3 way switch in the basement and I think a couple of other things too. He did a lot of work for us. Later, because my dad and I screwed something up, we had to have them back out to fix our mistake. Rich came out, troubleshot the problem, and fixed it. He charged a fair price for the troubleshooting.

First they installed the closet lighting; the work was done neatly and quickly. The motion sensors they then installed did not, at first, work the way I'd wanted, so they came back right away and adjusted them and replaced one unit (which turned out to have been faulty). They were all (it's a family-run business) friendly, professional, a pleasure to have around.
Description of Work: J and B installed motion-sensor lighting on our garage and on the side of our house. They also installed lighting in a reach-in closet. They did troubleshooting on our low-voltage garden and porch lighting and showed us how to circumvent the old, confusing timers.

 + -1 moreThe J&B team was very reasonably priced, always on time and they communicated with me. They let me know as they went what they found or what they were going to do, etc. They took the time to make sure I got what I wanted and that they explained what they found/did.
Description of Work: I started out with J&B to find out why I lost power to a circuit in my living room, they come over in the evening figured it out and came back the next day for permanent repair. I then got a price and had them replace the main electric service panel for my home, after they did such a good job for such a fair price I used them to move a circuit after I tore out a wall. I then had them back to troubleshoot a circuit for me (outdoor) and complete some wiring for two ceiling fans.

I invited 6 firms (found on Angie's List) to define the problem and propose a solution; 2 responded. I chose the more reasonable offer, and was delighted with the prompt, courteous, professional response. The proposal/approval occurred Wed. night; they were on the job Thurs. noon. Pricing was for the job, which was finished mid-evening for no extra charge. J B is a family business, so 3 members were involved here. They all pitched in to resolve wiring surprises, and worked very well together. They know their business, and deliver value. I would recommend this firm to anyone.
Description of Work: Replacement of complete electrical facility, from the external power company feed connection to and including the interior breaker box. Appropriate steps were also taken when old wiring errors were encountered during the breaker labeling phase.

 + -1 moreWhen I called the company, Jim called me back promptly, and was able to give me a price over the phone. Jim and his two sons came the next day on time, and completed all of the work in a timely and professional manner. All three were very friendly and personable. It was easy to see that they knew what they were doing and had the proper tools and material to complete the jobs properly. It was an excellent experience, and they even saw that water was getting into the electrical panel box. I had no idea that was happening. They found that the sealant on the main wire going into the meter outside had dried,cracked, and was falling off, letting water in. They resealed the area at no extra charge.
Description of Work: Repair bathroom outlet that was pulling out of the wall. Install and wire GFCI outside outlet. Install and wire basement GFCI outlet.

Description of Work: At main breaker panel: installed one 60A, 220V breaker, two ground rods outside and bonded them to main panel, connected 100A subfeed SE type cable to 220V breaker. New sub-panel: Installed new sub-panel with 100A main breaker, one 30A, 220V breaker, six 110V breakers, one ground rod bonded to sub, two outlets (one GFI), one draw string light, conduit from panel up to attic for future use. Additional: Ran 100A sub-feed SE type cable around basement ~70ft., connected that cable to a 100A underground rated cable via a junction box, pulled the underground rated cable ~40ft. through a conduit and connected to the new sub-panel. Note: price does not include 100A SE cable or inspection fees.

While here, they replaced the 4 switches and rewired the ones that had been installed wrong by my dimwitted ex-brother in law. He also pointed out some things to improve next time, but did not pressure me to do the work now as I neither had the time nor money right away. While here, he also cheerfully fixed a small, but unrelated issue.
