Great experience from start to finish. Sandy (co-owner) answers the phone is professional and courteous to callers. Answered all my questions and was very responsive - she's a great asset to the company. Randy came out just a couple days after my call for the estimate. Prompt, courteous, and overall just good guy. Then Mario arrived - prompt, courteous, professional. He was a one man show - and did a tremendous job. His workmanship is excellent. He problem-solved many things that come up when repairing an older home. I felt that he was honest and was not trying to make an extra buck, but just do the job right - and he did. I am so pleased with everything - he is a master craftsman and has great social skills and personality! I would not hesitate to call Hanyman Matters for other jobs in the future - in fact, I'm already making a list. I'm sure they will get busy over the summer, but they are worth the wait if their other workmen are as good as Mario was.
Description of Work: Removed old ceramic tile around the bathtub. Replaced drywall behind the tiles completely around the tub. Installed new bathtub liner (purchased separately - but they picked it up and delivered it). Scraped and painted ceiling and surrounding area. New silicone caulk everywhere. Added corner strip/edging where necessary to make aesthetically pleasing. Installed new bowed shower curtain rod. Repaired / primed ceiling of lower floor bathroom that was damaged when this bathroom leaked downstairs. Cut-out and installed new exhaust fan in bathroom with shower. Rewired for exhaust fan and installed new GFCI electrical outlet near sink - dropped lines from ceiling. Cut hole in house roof to exhaust new fan outside.

We discussed the plans and requirements which included a total length of walls (approx 54 foot in total) forming and completly finishing a bath area (rough-ins were already there) and extending the wall along the back basement wall to accommodate cabinets and sink (rough-ins already in place) for a small kitcheneytte work style area. Finishing the bathroom walls and ceiling (finished only in this area) with fan and finishing the rear wall for the kitchenette area and enclosing the furnace area (a small single basement facing support of approx 9* foot) allowing for a large oversized sliding louvered doors for easy access to the furnace and water heater. Well, we were surprised when their price came back for "Labor Only" substantially higher than other companies "Total" price (including electrician/plumbers/drywall materials/plumbing/wiring/lumber/doors/etc.) with an additional caveat that any materials purchased by them would be charged an additional 20%. Needless to say, we decided not to go with them. * included in total above
Description of Work: None, other than the initial meeting. They responded as I expect all Angie's List companies to do, they were on time for the first meeting.

I actually talked to them, I didn't like the way their policy worked where any guy would just show up. He really couldn't come and give me an estimate. He told we would come and do the work. They charge may be around $25 or $50 an hour. The guy really didn't sit well with me so I didn't really use them. The guy was nice though I would have preferred somebody come, take a look and give me the price; then to just listen what they charge per hour. The guy would come and give me estimate with my cost but I really don't like that kind of stuff. The guy was nice enough to talk to but I will not use their service in the future.
Description of Work: I talked to Handyman Matters to get an estimate on sheet rocking and interior painting. The last interaction with them was past December.
Randy came the day after I contacted Handyman Matters and looked at all the projects. He emailed me a detailed estimate that afternoon and sent Paul over the next day to start the work. I was concerned that I might not have a kitchen to use on Super Bowl Sunday but Paul assured me that while it would not be finished it would be usable. The great thing about having multiple projects is that while Paul waited for mudding to dry, he started in on the sinks. Another great thing about the company is that you can have them buy everything at 20% over cost or you can buy it or combine the two. We bought the sinks, RFP board, door, door lumber, door drywall and vents while they bought drywall, paint, caulking, mud, tape, nails, etc. The bad drywall on the kitchen ceiling was removed, the new drywall installed, taped and mudded on the first day plus Paul gave me a detailed shopping list for the sinks and new interior door. The next day Paul ripped out the old laundry sinks and enhanced the sink legs of the new sink by adding screws to the legs so it would be sturdy enough. He noticed that the old valves were probably not going to outlast the new sink so off to the store I went. Paul talked to the store salesman to make sure I got what we needed. He put up the RFP board, installed the sinks and plumbing, put some more mud on the kitchen ceiling and laid out the design for the new walls and door to the bathroom. On the third day, he completed the wall, sanded, primed and painted the kitchen ceiling. The ceiling was amazing as you cannot tell where the damaged drywall was. On the last day Paul removed the old caulking from the bathtub and added the new which instantly made the bathtub look much younger. He hung the door, taped and mudded the walls for the new door and was done early and under budget. It was a great experience and wonderful to have all those projects done in less than a week.
Description of Work: Replace drywall on ceiling kitchen, repaint ceiling Replace laundry tubs in laundry room with new tubs and faucet Add wall and door to close in bathroom Recaulk bathtub Remove dog eaten trim board

Handyman called in advance and arrived a few minutes early. Quality of work was very good, and technician's manner was friendly and professional. He made me feel confident in his knowledge and expertise, which was proven true by his results. Very minor area for improvement: although a garbage can was nearby, a few discarded repair parts were left on the ground. I plan on having them return to do additional work, and will request the same technician.

Experience was good from start to finish. The co-owner was very professional during the telephone call to arrange for the job. The handyman was skilled and prepared. He arrived on time and completed the work promptly. This last point is important because the jobs are billed on an hourly rate basis. The co-owner called back today to determine my level of satisfaction.

They have a number of people who work for them. Tony is the gentleman who came out and who is here now. He is very informative. My wife and I felt that he was very honest about some work that we wanted him to do because we didn?t know what it entailed. So he took time and explained it to us. He also suggested some other things to try and that was kind of a dry run. We just thought that he was very nice and we appreciated the way the company got back to us. We asked them to do a few things in the bathroom. It wasn?t a complete bathroom remodel, but it included installing a new tub and new surround. I am very happy with them especially Tony in particular. He is a very nice man even though it?s not his company. He is one of the people whom I trust. They got right back to us.

The worked performed was excellent. We hung the cabinets in the laundry room in less than two hours. I asked since we finished so quickly would he have time to install some electrical outlets in the basement. The handman was very accommodating to my request. He went out and bought the materials and installed the six outlets and finished by 3 pm. Great work as always!

The drywall hanger was diligent and knowledgable in his craft. He arrived on time to immediately survey the job. He offered a suggestion to fix the one side of the wall without having to cut out and replace the entire plaster wall which would have run the entire cost up to probably twice the estimate. He kept the plaster dust down to a minimum even while cutting out the area where he was contracted to work which was right up next to the furnace. He completely and tidily cleaned up afterward.
Description of Work: Replaced plaster wall with sheetrock (drywall) which required cutting out the old plaster, roughly a 32 sq foot section of a wall and replaced one side of the wall only with sheetrock. Also preped the opposite side (the side of the wall that was not replaced by sheetrock) by mudding, sanding, and smoothing the existing plaster wall.

They initially never called us back. But I did receive a follow up call from the report I had left and they informed me that they install hardwood floors not refinish them. Repairman was prompt. I showed him the problem with the leak and the 2 slow light switches. He tightened up the screws on the switches and said they were just loose. He did not have to us any materiel except a screwdriver. He looked at the leak in the copper water pipe in the ceiling, but stated that he did not have th 1/2 inch compression fitting he needed, so we had to go 6 miles to the highway to get the fitting. It took about 45 minutes to get back home and finish the 5 minute job of replacing a section of copper tubing with a flexible tubing. He didn't even solder anything, just screw everything on. He didn't put the ceiling tile back because he said for me to see if he really got the right spot of the leak. He said I should wrap the copper pipes because they were sweating. He didn't do that for me either. He said for me to get a light for my shower that is impervious to water, because the light I have in the shower is not waterproof. I have no idea how to change a light fixture in a shower! Oh well, that won't get done either. A 15 minute light switch tightening and a 10 minute replacement of a copper water pipe with a flexible hose....$200.00. Too much money and not a complete. I still don't have the ceiling tile back in. But the leak has stopped for now. Oh well.

Response from Ace Handyman Services South Pittsburgh
Upon arrival at customers home the Craftsman did review the work of repairing leak in pipe, and troubleshooting electrical - the Craftsman did estimate the work to involve 3-4 hours worth of labor. The customer did sign off to the estimate. The Craftsman did troubleshoot the electrical and reinstalled switches 3 ways, and then cut out copper and installed 2 new 1/2 inch fittings. Time to complete the work was 2.5 hours which was below our estimate of 3-4 hours. It does take time to properly evaluate plumbing and electrical, we always suggest if possible to leave area open (when plumbing is involved) to see if there area any further drips or leaks. If so then we can correct and the customer has no further damage. I did place a call to the homeowner on 5-4-10, no one answered so we left a message to see if she was satisfied with the work. She never called back into the office. Original work was completed 5-3-10.

The ice had pulled the awning and siding off the porch. Instead of replacing the siding, which would have been expensive and hard to find, they tried unbending the creases and nailed it back up. They also jerry-rigged a fastener for the awning pole. It was an acceptable job, but I had to ask them to caulk the old nail holes in the siding, which they were happy to do. Not all of the creases were removed from the siding, but the awning covered most of it. Considering the backlog of my neighbors still waiting to get their gutters repaired, I was happy to have this repair done so quickly, but at some future time may replace the section of siding.

It was a wonderful working experience. Mark was very professional. He started with my livingroom fan and ran into a slight problem. I needed to get a part and while I was gone, he proceeded into the kitchen and fixed the light switch in dinningroom. Ran into another problem in kitchen, which he handled with ease. He never complained about anything, in fact, he was worried about any dust falling from the ceiling.

It went very well. The gentleman was very nice, courteous, and he arrived on time.
Description of Work: He installed trim on the siding in the front of my house.
They did an excellent job. They really started from scratch and put in all of the materials I had purchased on my own. The people who did the job were extremely professional and punctual. They were personable and easy to work with. They were meticulous in their work, and everyone has been entirely impressed with how beautiful the bathroom looks now. I couldn?t be happier with them.
Description of Work: They remodeled my bathroom, from top to bottom. They completely gutted it and put in Portofino tile floor, new tub, new cherry wood vanity and fixtures, towel racks, grab bar, commode, door, lighting, and they painted it and put up a border as well as replacing some of the plumbing and drywall.

Very happy! Found workers to be competent and professional. They did an excellant job! They also tried to manage time as efficiently as possible. Roof job required two workers so while one went to pick up supplies, the other stayed on job to complete tasks that one person could do alone. Cleaned everything up, did not leave any mess for me do deal with.

I was very impressed with the work. I was concerned about needing a plumber and a drywall guy, but it was all taken care of in one trip.
Description of Work: water leaking from second floor bathroom through drywall ceiling and bulkhead in family room. Paul arrived promply, assessed the situation and gave us a plan. He cut access in the ceiling and found that the tub spout was leaking. Had to make a couple short trips to find appropriate materials for the job. He was diligent in finding the source of the leak (2 other companies had failed) and in repairing it. He did all of this through as small of a cutout in the ceiling as possible to work. He also replaced the drywall and matched the ceiling "patterns" perfectly.

My first phone call was answered promptly by one of the business owners. She was very friendly and helpful. She was able to set up an appointment that accommodated my schedule. The handymen arrived promptly and did a good job with the project. They also looked over some other potential projects and gave me very helpful advice. They were definitely more interested in gaining a long-term customer than in making a quick buck! A very good experience.
