Mr. Handyman offered same day service (I was unable to take them up on it as I had used the shower to be caulked that day); I was able to be scheduled for the very next day first thing. Betsy, who answered my call, was courteous and told me who the technician would be, said I could check his picture on their website so I knew who to expect at my door. I liked that she was concerned about my safety. Eric arrived right on time, was friendly and got right to work. The work was completed in less time than I expected and I am very pleased with the results so far.
Description of Work: The technician removed old caulk from two bathtubs and one shower stall and recaulked those areas.

Needed someone to come out today to clean gutters but everyone else I called said they probably couldn't get to me until the week between Christmas and New Year's. Betsy at Mr. Handyman said she could have someone out this afternoon. She explained that they charge $284 for the first 2 hours, no less. I knew that doing my gutters would only take an hour, so she suggested I add something else to the call. I asked to have my mailbox post reset, because the postman had knocked it crooked with his truck. She put that down. The handyman, Terry, showed up at the right time, did the job efficiently, professionally, neatly, and was done in about 1.5 hours. And that is the trick to Mr. Handyman: that you, the customer, don't know how long a given job will take and so you can't plan the use of time efficiently to use up all the 2 hours and not go over, so you go under and overpay. However, if you need the job done that day and done right, and cost is not the issue, then these people are the ones to call-definitely.
Description of Work: About 130 feet of gutter to be cleaned on a simple roof with just two sides and a gently pitched roof. Also re-set a mailbox post that the postman had knocked with his truck.

We liked all of the positive comments that they read on Angie's List. I gave him a call and he was able to install it the next day. Having a newborn, we felt that was important. He arrived on time and had it install about an hour and a half later. I asked him to take a look at a couple of other little jobs and he was amenable. It was easy to use this company.
Description of Work: I hired this company to install an over the range microwave and look at a dryer vent.

Excellent workmanship; very professional and prompt service. Will use again.
Description of Work: Purchased and installed a new screen door; removed the old door.
Friendly prompt response by phone on initial contact. I faxed a detailed list of tasks to facilitate assigning the work. Scheduling the work was somewhat of a challenge due to their constraints and my schedule. I had three visits from two different techs. The first tech was highly skilled and professional. He came twice. However, it appeared as if the less challenging tasks were cherry-picked leaving more challenging jobs undone. For example, why not complete all the painting jobs? Two garage steps were never painted. The tasks that second tech attempted all had to be redone. Sloppy paint touch-up in one bathroom. They did not use tape or remove fixture covers for red & orange paint. He forgot to paint the wall behind the door, the nail pops were fixed but not painted and they popped again before they could be painted. He repositioned the ironing board holder that he had installed too low but, left the first holes in the wall without repairing them. Did not caulk all areas. When I contacted the company with my concerns they said that they needed to send the initial tech out to fix things that were not satisfactory and finish the job since he was their best guy but, he was booked up for a few weeks. After a few attempts to reschedule I did not call back. My work travel schedule was prohibitive in the fall, which is why I tried completing the work during the summer. I eventually hired other companies to complete the work since I believe that they did not have the skills or will to handle all of the tasks. Hired a plumber for the sink, plaster for the nail pops, electrician for light switches. I fixed the paint & caulk myself and still need somebody to stretch the carpet. In hindsight, I believe this company is better suited for a shorter list or single task project. I really wanted a handyman to take ownership and go through the house and take care of all of the outstanding little fixes. They just wanted to get paid and close the job.
Description of Work: Worked on a punchlist of services provided in advance: Replaced doorbell, replaced storm door bracket, mounted ironing board holder & mop & broom hanger, hung pictures, secure toilet tissue holder, tighten electrical outlet, replace water filters on shower & frig, recaulk bathroom areas, repair nail pops, stretch carpet, sand sheet rock along base board & repaint as needed, paint touch-up, replace door stops, clean second floor window, fix air-gap at front door and replacing the kitchen sink, bathroom exhaust fan & light on separate switch.

AFTER SUCH A LONG SPAN OF TIME IT APPEARS THE MEMBER’S RECOLLECTION OF THE FACTS HAS BECOME LESS CLEAR. WE DID THE WORK IN AUG & SEP, '05 (SHE IS WRITING A REVIEW OVER 3 YRS LATER). AT THE END OF THE 2 DAY JOB THE MEMBER SIGNED OFF THAT THE WORK WAS DONE WELL. SHE CALLED SEVERAL DAYS LATER TO SAY THE DEEP RED WALL PAINT SHE PURCHASED HAD SOME SPOTS THAT WERE SHOWING THROUGH. WE OFFERED TO RETURN (AT NO CHARGE) TO REPAINT THE WALL; HER SCHEDULE REQUIRED A DELAY OF OVER A WEEK. THE CHANGE IN TECHNICIANS WAS SOLELY DUE TO HER SCHEDULE RESTRICTIONS. AT THE COMPLETION SHE AGAIN SAID SHE WAS PLEASED, ONLY TO CALL SEVERAL DAYS LATER THAT IT STILL WAS “NOT RIGHT”. WE RETURNED (12 DAYS LATER DUE TO HER SCHEDULE) AND PAINTED THE WALL FOR THE THIRD TIME AGAIN FOR NO CHARGE AND COMPLETED ADDITIONAL ITEMS FOR WHICH SHE WAS CHARGED. THE OWNER VISITED THE SITE AND CONFIRMED WITH THE CUSTOMER THAT ALL OF THE WORK WAS COMPLETED TO HER TOTAL SATISFACTION. WE BELIEVE WE MADE EVERY REASONABLE ATTEMPT TO SATISFY THIS CUSTOMER AND AT THE END OF EACH JOB SHE AGREED. THIS IS OUR FIRST NOTICE IN OVER 3 YEARS THAT SHE WAS AGAIN NOT HAPPY. REGARDING HER OTHER COMMENTS, WE DON’T DO ESTIMATES; WE ARE STRICTLY “TIME AND MATERIAL,” A FACT WE EXPLAINED BEFORE SHE BOOKED THE WORK AND THAT SHE ACKNOWLEDGED WITH HER SIGNATURE BEFORE EACH APPOINTMENT. SHE COMPLAINED THAT WE CHANGED TECHNICIANS BEFORE COMPLETING HER WORK, BUT FAILED TO MENTION SHE WASN’T AVAILABLE FOR OVER A WEEK YET EXPECTED US TO CANCEL OTHER CUSTOMER’S APPOINTMENTS TO ACCOMMODATE HER SCHEDULE. SHE SUGGESTED WE “FOLLOW-UP BETTER” IGNORING THAT WE FOLLOWED-UP EVERY DAY WITH A PHONE CALL (LEAVING A MESSAGE) INQUIRING ABOUT HOW THE WORK WENT. IN ADDITION, WE LEFT A SURVEY CARD FOR HER TO COMPLETE AND RETURN ABOUT THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE. SHE CHOSE NOT TO RESPOND TO ANY OF THE CALLS OR THE CARD. THE PURPOSE OF HER COMMENT “IT’S A FRANCHISE” IS UNCLEAR. WE ARE A LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED FAMILY BUSINESS. WE HAVE LIVED AND WORKED IN THE COMMUNITY FOR NEARLY THIRTY YEARS AND TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN PROVIDING SUPERIOR SERVICE. WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR IS WHAT WE HAVE DONE SUCCESSFULLY FOR NEARLY FIVE YEARS FOR HUNDREDS OF CUSTOMERS, AS EVIDENCED BY OUR ANGIE’S LIST A RATING.
Overall went very well, except for some warping in the dry wall that was installed.

He arrived a few minutes early, introduced himself and read my list of things to do. He took the list and got started, doing the indoor things first. He then went outside and began the work there. When a problem developed in rehanging a fallen gutter, he reported it to me. We agreed he would buy the materials needed to properly complete tne and then he would complete the repair. When he had finished all the work, except for the painting, he reported to me. I signed his work order and he left. I called in the credit card information to the office to pay the bill. He came back a week later to do the painting, and billed me for one hour. When he finished we followed the same procedure to pay.

The next day Surl left a message wanting to know how everything went. Frankly I wasn t going to call back as I don t like to complain, (it has taken me over a week to write this, because I am reluctant to complain) that afternoon it rained and my gutters were still leaking. I felt I had no choice but to call as I had spent a lot of money for 2 small jobs being done and one failed. I called the next day and let her know what happened, I did let her know he was never rude and extremely friendly; she carefully listened then got the owner on the phone. I repeated what happened and he said that not finishing the job was not acceptable. I said I felt I paid a lot of money for basically getting nothing done. He corrected my wording and said something to the effect of he did do some work for you I agreed and said, I was just speaking metaphorically that I felt as if nothing much was done for the amount of money I paid. He then said he would send another worker and give me one hour free to get my jobs done, but that I had to pay the 88.00 an hour for work done after the hour. I agreed as I felt that was more then fair. The worker came on time the next morning. Walked through with me to go over what was to be done. He said he could replace the windows but not today, as he had to do research on what kind they were. He said that could take some time to do, and that he was afraid he may break the special beading and he had to make sure where to get some, if needed. He again said this would take some time to find out. I said I will just hire a window specialist as I knew they would know what to do as we had one replaced before we moved into the house. He then looked at the molding for the door. He said the kind of wood I had was not the kind needed. He said that if it was going to be right, he needed to get another type of molding so it would be one piece, instead of two. I agreed, he said first he needed to go back home as he didn t have his saw with him and it was at home, then he would go over to the home improvement store on the way back and get the wood. He told me he lived just a little down the way. It took more then a hour to get back to my home. He took over a hour to do the trim, which is I must say is meticulously done. He was not able to do the bi fold doors and he said they should be custom made or buy hardwood ones and plain down the sides, he said he could do but it would take 2 people to the job and take a few hours. He offered to have a buddy make some for me but it also would be costly. He found the problem with the gutters which was simple to fix, but he wanted to sell me a foam sponge like item for 250 dollars to help the run off from the roof to slow down so it would not run over the seems in my gutter guards, I asked him if they were removed would that stop the run off, he said yes, he didn t remove them and I said I would talk to my husband about the sponge. I ended up paying about 376 that day.
Description of Work: replace 2 glass windows, Gutters to be fixed, 5 shutters removed, replace door molding. said fee up front, 258.00 up to 2 hours of work 88.00 an hour thereafter, but I would be billed in 15 minute intervals for the work (after 2 hours) I felt that was reasonable. Due to bad storms they had to cancel 2 times. Both times they promptly let me know early in the morning before 8:00 am that they had to cancel, which I appreciated. We rescheduled for the next week after 12:30, Surl called me to let me know the worker was on his way from West Chester. The worker showed up around 2:40ish. He was very friendly and likable. He walked around with me to see what work 30 to 40 minutes was spent in him talking and/or having me get things for him or asking me something, maybe 40 minutes he worked needed to be done. Right off the bat he said he wasn t capable of replacing the cracked windows, he went into a very long 15-20 minute explanation of what needed to be done to the window and that he didn t have the tools to do it anyway. He then looked at the closet and said he could not replace the doors as he would have to rip out the molding and widen the opening because the closet was a inch off for in stock bi-fold doors, he again went into a very, very long explanation of why and what he would do if he did it, because he did it for his wife and he explained again in great detail what he would do and what he did in his own home. This was another 15 minute or so explanation. We then went to the look at the shutters. He said he could take down the shutters and then cap the holes. He then looked at the molding around the front door and said he couldn t do it because I needed 3 feet more and because I had put foam insulation in the cracks, he had no idea where to put the nails! I suggested using liquid nails and he said no that wouldn t do, as he would have to hold it for a while to set it in place. He said if he had epoxy clay he would use that, but he had just ran out. He told me I saw a home improvement store 5 minutes down the road; you can get some and do it yourself. I want to stress, he was trying to be helpful, and he was never rude. He said I will go ahead and miter the two strips for you. He then cleaned the back gutter of the house which is about 3 feet long, went to the front and looked at it, and told me he saw nothing wrong. I explained what happened when it rained and he said. Well I will seal around the nails, maybe that s where they are leaking. If it leaks again just call us and we will be back to fix it at no charge. It should also be noted he ran me to death, asking for me to get things for him, or to ask me do something or to tell me what he had just did with a job, again in minute detail. As time went on, I had the impression he and his wife had plans that night and he needed to go. He almost ran back and forth between the jobs, but to be fair I might be wrong, he maybe a hyper type of person.

WE ARE CONFUSED BY THE MEMBER’S RATING AND HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE MEMBER TO RESOLVE, WITHOUT REPLY. BY HER ACCOUNT THE SERVICE, QUALITY, EFFICIENCY AND TIMELINESS WERE ALL VERY GOOD OR BETTER. WE REMOVED SEVERAL PAIRS OF EXTERIOR SHUTTERS AND SEALED THE HOLES THAT REMAINED. WE DIDN’T REPAIR THE WINDOW AS IT WAS A SEALED DOUBLE PANE AND ADVISED HER OF THAT FACT AT THE START. THE HOLLOW-CORE CLOSET DOORS THE MEMBER BOUGHT WERE SEVERAL INCHES TOO LARGE FOR THE OPENING AND COULDN’T BE CUT DOWN ENOUGH TO FIT. THE TECHNICIANS EXPLAINED THAT AND OFFERED SEVERAL OPTIONS, AS THEY ARE TRAINED TO DO. WE CLEANED THE GUTTERS AND REPAIRED THEM. AS THE REPAIR DIDN’T WORK, WE RETURNED AND FIXED IT FOR NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. THAT WAS ALL DONE FOR OUR BASE CHARGE, WHICH AFTER THE CREDIT WAS INCLUDED, WAS A NET PRICE OF $170. THE MEMBER CHARACTERIZED THAT AS “NOTHING DONE FOR A LOT OF MONEY”. SINCE WE WORK ON A TIME AND MATERIAL BASIS WE DO TRAIN OUR TECHNICIANS TO WORK EFFICIENTLY BUT WITH SUPERIOR QUALITY. THE MEMBER’S CRITICISM ABOUT THE SPEED OF THE TECHNICIAN IS BEWILDERING. ON THE RETURN VISIT THE TRIM MOULDING HAD TO BE REMOVED, THE FRAME BUILT UP AS FOAM INSULATION HAD BEEN USED AS FILLER, NEW MOLDING PURCHASED RE-CUT AND INSTALLED. THE MEMBER CHARACTERIZED THE WORK AS “METICULOUSLY DONE”. IN RESPONSE TO HER INQUIRY, WE ALSO PROVIDED INFORMATION ABOUT A BETTER QUALITY GUTTER PROTECTION TO SOLVE THE MEMBER’S PROBLEM. OTHER THAN NOT FIXING THE GUTTER THE FIRST TIME, WE DON’T UNDERSTAND THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS OR WHAT WE COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. WE KEPT THE MEMBER ADVISED, COMPLETED THE WORK IN A SUPERIOR AND EFFICIENT MANNER. THE MEMBER RATED US 'A' FOR RESPONSIVENESS, AND PUNCTUALITY, 'B' FOR PROFESSIONALISM AND 'C' FOR PRICE AND QUALITY DESCRIBED AS “METICULOUS”. WE DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THAT THEN EARNS A 'D' RATING.

Work was estimated over the phone to fall within company's $250 minimum for two hours of work. Worker arrived when scheduled and completed the job fully satisfactorily. Follow-up call was received to ask whether work was satisfactory. I would definitely use this service again for other needs, should they arise. I particularly appreciated the company's ability to follow directions provided by phone so that I did not need to be present when the work was being done.

I was pleased with the work performed. Our technician was Brad Minnick. He arrived in a timely manner, was professionally dressed, clearly identified and had a stocked van. Brad immediately began to work upon arrival. He evaluated each job and started with the most difficult job first. All work was done cleanly and correctly. When a part of the job could not be done because of an HVAC venting issue I had behind my walls, Brad recommended a way to resolve it. I would use this company again and most likely will in the future. The only thing I would complain about was how quickly they can schedule a job. I understand this time of year is busy and that not many others can be onsite as quick, I still hoped to see a quicker booking. However, that is my only complaint and it is not even a major one in the grand scheme of things. What is important is that the job was done right and it looked professional.

At first, we were taken aback because once you ask Mr. Handyman for an estimate, you are expected to commit to them for completion of the job. However, this process worked extremely well for the small jobs for which we needed help. (We had previously had problems getting responses to our inquiries, scheduling visits, etc.) Mr. Handyman responded almost immediately to our inquiry; asked pertinent questions and gathered information (including photos) from us concerning the scope of the work; guaranteed a date and arrival time; provided a written estimate (by email per our preference); and provided the name of our service person as well as his photo on their web site. The service person was on time, brought all of the tools and materials required, was friendly and informative, and did outstanding work. We are very pleased and will definitely use Mr. Handyman for future projects.

Representatives were very responsive, but, when I pressed for an estimate (how else to determine whether to hire them or not) I was given the following bizarre explanation [I had emailed a list of our needs]: ''How we operate is we come out to do the work and give you an estimate on that day. However, once we're there, we have come to actually make your repairs.'' I cannot conceive of a more ridiculous way to do business. Nor would I ever recommend this firm on the basis of this experience.

AS A HANDYMAN SERVICE, CUSTOMERS OFTEN HAVE US DO A VARIETY OF JOBS, USUALLY IN LESS THAN A DAY. ESTIMATES AREN’T EFFECTIVE IN SUCH SITUATIONS; THEY ADD DELAYS FOR CLIENTS ANXIOUS TO GET THE WORK DONE. WE OFTEN FINISH THE WORK BEFORE OTHERS WOULD HAVE SCHEDULED AN ESTIMATE. WE DISCUSS THE JOB AND APPROXIMATE TIMEFRAMES WITH THE CLIENT, BUT ONLY CHARGE FOR TIME WE ACTUALLY ARE WORKING. ESTIMATES ADD CHARGES TO COVER “THE UNEXPECTED” OFTEN RESULTING IN COSTS HIGHER THAN NECESSARY. WE WANT TO HANDLE ALL OUR CLIENT’S TO-DO LIST ITEMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IF THEY DON’T FEEL THEY’RE GETTING THEIR MONEY’S WORTH, THEY WON’T CALL US BACK OR RECOMMEND US. REPEAT/REFERRAL CLIENTS ARE THE HEART OF OUR BUSINESS. OUR TECHS HAVE 15+ YRS EXPERIENCE AND ARE TRAINED TO PROVIDE CLIENTS EFFICIENT, HIGH-QUALITY WORKMANSHIP. WE’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT PROVIDING SUPERIOR SERVICE. NOT ONLY IS OUR WORK GUARANTEED, BUT WE MAKE AN OFFER TO CLIENTS; IF AFTER 20 MINS, THEY DON’T FEEL THE TECH IS WORKING EFFICIENTLY, THEY SHOULD TELL HIM TO LEAVE, AND THEN CALL US. IF A TECH ISN’T WORKING EFFICIENTLY FOR THEM, HE WON’T BE WORKING FOR US. THE MEMBER ACKNOWLEDGED THAT ALL OF THIS WAS EXPLAINED TO HIM. WE DON’T DESERVE AN “F” SIMPLY BECAUSE HE DIDN’T AGREE WITH OUR BUSINESS MODEL. HE CALLED US; WE EXPLAINED HOW WE WORK; HE DECIDED NOT TO HIRE US. HE NEVER GAVE US A CHANCE TO SHOW THE VALUE WE PROVIDE TO HUNDREDS OF SATISFIED CLIENTS EACH YR. WE DON’T SEE WHAT WE DID WRONG OR COULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY.

My overall experience with Mr. Handyman of the Western Main Line was a very good one from the moment I placed the service call. They explained all their pricing to me and sent me an email to follow up on the service call that I placed. They gave me the name of the technician that would be handling my service call as well as a picture of what he looked like. They informed me that the truck would be well marked and if there would be a change of technicians' that I would be notified beforehand. I am a very detailed person and believes in follow up. They were very professional from the moment I placed the call and that holds a lot of weight with me. As far as pricing I probably could have had it done for less but I know I will not have to call them back to fix a mistake they made or to complete the work.
Description of Work: A spring that holds a daybed mattress was installed upside down by the moving company that moved us in July of 2005. It needed to be turned right side up by basically taking the daybed apart. I purchased a new light fixture and mirror for my powder room which needed to be installed. The new mirror was larger than the existing one so the location of the existing light fixture needed to be moved up so the mirror would fit. To do this he had to move the electrical connection, patch the old connection and mounted the new light and mirror. I also had new fixtures put on the sink. This entailed taking the pedal sink apart and removing the old fixtures to install the new. A new toilet paper holder was also installed.

We have had this job done several times before, but the ceiling always cracked again. This repairman felt it was due to nails having been used where screws were needed. We hope this is the last time for the repair. This job was too small to interest other repairmen. Mr. Handyman came when he was supposed to. He did the work efficiently. The price seems high but we did not get bids. They charge $74 for the first half-hour, $368 for 4 hours, $688 a day, and even small material items are charged for. The job was completed within a week of contacting the company.
Description of Work: Drywall joints on ceiling were cracking and separating. The repairman removed tape and discovered nails were used instead of screws. He then put in screws, taped, and spackled.

Very well-organized, professional, easy to work with. Technician was easy to work with and work was done well. I'd use them again. Quite expensive, but worth the price.
Description of Work: Repaired several gutters, replaced damaged molding, planed down doors (newly-installed carpet created problems closing doors).

Getting on the schedule was tough. Mike the handyman was very friendly. He called out sick a couple of times though the office called immediately to inform me and they did their best to reschedule. Management was very solicitous and good with follow through. I will use them again.
Description of Work: Repaired concrete patio, power washed house, replaced aluminum window and door capping, repaired storm door closures.
