We love them! They are wonderful. I had no heat in one room for a long time and they solved it! For that alone, they get an A! That was a tough problem. They are pleasant and easy to reach. They are also reliable.
Description of Work: They came out to figure out why we didn't have heat in one room of the house.

My furnace broke on one of the coldest days of the year. They came out in less than 2 hrs after I called them. The tech, Jamie, was very polite and knowledgeable. I don't have anything to compare the price to so I gave them an A for that, anyway. The whole experience was very good and quick. The price included a one year maintenance agreement of $165.00. The price is also minus a $40.00 coupon they took that I found in the phone book. I'd recommend them to anyone.

My furnace broke on one of the coldest days of the year (Sunday). They came out early the next morning and replaced the ignitor. The tech, Jamie, was very polite and knowledgeable. The price I paid included $165. for a maintenance agreement. They took a $40.00 coupon I got from the phone book. I don't have anything to compare it with on price so I gave them an A anyway. We have used this company for at least five years. I've tried other companies, but always come back to them. They have always provided me with steady, reliable service. They are not the cheapest, but they have standards that they follow. They have good business practices, both for the customer and the owner. The warranty their work. I don't remember when they arrived.

The service and professionalism was grade A as Angie's list reported but I do not feel a 1.5 hr job should cost as much as charged. The homeowner is inclined to accept because of the urgent need. Buyer beware. Ask for cost for the actual service, not the visit, before scheduling a technician would have been smart. I feel that many plumbers take advantage of the situation and Carney is no exception. I only got a 30 day guarantee as well with nothing in writing to document.

Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE MEMBER FOR THE FAIRNESS AND CONCERN IN HIS REPORT. I TOO AM A CONSUMER AND SOMETIMES GET A PRECONCEIVED NOTION OF WHAT THE PRICE OF SOMETHING SHOULD BE WITH NO KNOWLEDGEABLE BASIS IN ARRIVING AT THAT CONCLUSION. FOR EXAMPLE, YESTERDAY I MENTIONED TO MY WIFE THAT I WAS STOPPING AT A LOCAL STORE TO GET GAS AND MY NEWSPAPERS. SHE ASKED ME TO PICK UP TWO KAISER ROLLS, WHICH I DID. IT TURNS OUT THE ROLLS WERE .50 EACH, BUT IF YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED ME PRIOR TO THAT TIME I WOULD HAVE GUESSED THE ROLLS WERE .20-.25 EACH. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE OFFICE I MENTIONED THIS EXPERIENCE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE LOCAL SUPERMARKET ISN'T MUCH DIFFERENT AND SELLS THEM FOR .40-.45. SO FOR ME IT WAS ANOTHER LESSON ON THE THINGS WE PERCEIVE. IN THIS PARTICULAR REPORT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THE TIME EXPENDED WAS ACTUALLY 2HRS, 9 MINUTES. ALL OF OUR TRUCKS ARE EQUIPPED WITH GPS AND AFTER REVIEWING THIS CASE WE FOUND THE TECHNICIAN WAS DISPATCHED AT 12:52, ARRIVED ON SITE AT 1:23 AND DEPARTED AT 3:01. WHILE WE AVERAGE 23 MINUTES DRIVE TIME FROM JOB TO JOB EVERY ATTEMPT IS MADE TO CLOSELY SCHEDULE AND MINIMIZE DRIVE TIME. THERE ARE MANY COMPONENTS THAT ARE FACTORED INTO OUR SELLING PRICE THAT MAY NOT BE OBVIOUS TO THE AVERAGE CONSUMER SUCH AS OFFICE STAFF, TELEPHONES, HEALTH CARE, VACATION, HOLIDAYS JUST TO NAME A FEW. OUR COSTS ARE MONITORED ON A WEEKLY BASIS ENSURING THAT WE REMAIN NOT ONLY COMPETITIVE, BUT A VIABLE ENTITY WHERE OUR EMPLOYEES KNOW THEIR JOBS ARE SECURE. WE HAVE SENT THE MEMBER A LETTER DETAILING IN DEPTH, THE ITEMS THAT OUR PRICE ENTAILS. IN AN ATTEMPT TO ADD VALUE TO THIS MEMBER'S EXPERIENCE WITH OUR COMPANY, WE ALSO SENT HIM A GIFT CERTIFICATE AND INCREASED THE WARRANTY ON THIS DRAIN TO 90 DAYS. WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE SERVICE FOR THIS MEMBER IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU

water heater repair
+ -1 more
On Thursday, August 21 , 2008 my wife noticed some water accumulation around the water heater. I leaned later that Carney stopped providing A.O. Smith shortly after our purchase. They may have stopped earlier based on what I have recently learned. Kevin Carney Senior outlined the benefits (in writing) of the product and how long the warranty would last. It was a 6 year manufacturer warranty on the tank and Kevin Sr. wrote in his email (I still have the copy) that his company (Carney) would pick up an additional 4 years to make it a 10 year warranty on the tank. The date of August 21, 2008 was well inside the manufacturer s 6 year warranty (i.e. from June 2003, a six year warranty would expire in June of 2009). More on that later. Carney Sr. went on to describe that this a full warranty for the full 10 years. It was not pro rated and was good for 9 years and 364 days. When my wife called Carney on Thursday August 21 for warranty service, they said they would not service it. They told her to go to the manufacturer. I called and pressed them. They relented and agreed to get someone out the next day (i.e. Friday the 22nd). I called the morning of the 22nd to confirm someone would be out. I was told by Ryan Carney that it was on the schedule but it would likely be late in the day. I asked if there was any chance the repair would NOT take place today. I wanted to be sure we would not be entering the week end without hot water. Ryan assured me they would repair the water heater that day (i.e. August 22nd). The Carney repairman arrived at around 4:00 in the afternoon on the 22nd. He walked down to the basement and took a photo of the label on the side of the water heater. He then said the following: I was told to tell you that you can drain the water tank and bring it to our shop for repair. He said it was the only way to avoid a $900 repair bill for labor. I said, Am I understanding this? You are saying my only choice is to disconnect the tank and bring it to your shop for repair or pay you $900 to repair and replace it? He said, not really. We are not going to replace it. We will either repair it when you bring it in or you can call the manufacturer. I said, in other words, I need a new hot water heater. He said, That s right. I asked how much for a replacement and he said, About $2500. These units have really gone up over the years. I told him he could go. I engaged another plumber, who researched the existing model to see if they could engage the manufacturer to work on the warranty. Here is what they found out. The unit I purchased from Carney in 2003 was manufactured in 2000. The manufacturer s warranty expired in 2006. It seems Carney pulled an old A.O. Smith unit out of inventory and represented to me that is was new with a full 6 year warranty.
Description of Work: Carney installed a Propane Water Heater in June of 2003 for over $1500.00. I asked the owner to cost justify the price and he did. One of his arguments was the overall quality of the unit, which was an A.O. Smith model. He also offered a six year manufacturers warranty that was extended by Carney for an additional 4 years on top of that. He pointed out that it was a full warranty (not pro rated) that was good until the last day of the 10 years. The heater started leaking last week (August 21, 2008). Arithmetic will tell you that the leaking tank was well within the manufacturers warranty period and certainly within the 10 year Carney warranty. After refusing the original service call, a service technician showed up the next day on Friday at 4:00 P.M. (the 22nd) to inform us that the only option available was for me to drain the tank, disconnect it from the plumbing and bring it into their shop for them to repair it. He then said this would avoid a repair charge. When I asked him what the repair charge would be, he said that was not an option, I asked him what a new unit would cost, and he said that would be around $2,500.00. I declined this approach. I called in another plumber. The new plumber did not carry A.O. Smith but still tried to see if he could work a warranty claim with them. They found out from A.O. Smith that the tank sold to me in 2003 was manufactured in 2000, so A.O. Smith said their warranty had expired. Carney represented to me that I was buying a unit with a 6 year warranty. The new plumber installed a brand new unit for $1052 with a new six year warranty. (i.e. not $2500). Finally, the new plumber noticed an installation flaw from 2003 with the A.O. Smith that likely lead to the leak.

Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling
We at Carney Plumbing, Heating and Cooling continuously strive to attain excellence in providing our clients with the utmost in service, quality of material, and workmanship. The report on our company, posted by this individual, is very disturbing particularly due to the fact that its content contains false statements and innuendos. It should be noted that earlier this year, due to a discrepancy with a prior unrelated invoice, we as a company decided that it would be in the best interest of both parties to no longer continue a business relationship. Our company installed an A.O. Smith propane fired water heater at this residence in June 2003. As for the accusation of "Carney pulled an old A.O. Smith unit out of inventory and represented to me that it was new with a full 6 year warranty." We have submitted evidence to Angie's List, proving that the water heater that was installed was not pulled out of our inventory, but was in fact purchased from a distributor by our company the same day that it was installed. Every water heater manufactured by A.O. Smith has the warranty attached and is installed as such. In the warranty is a section entitled "Claim Procedure" and clearly states that any "claim under the warranty should be initiated with the dealer who sold the heater or any other dealer handling the warrantor's products. If this is not practical the owner should contact A.O. Smith at 1-800-527-1953." All that is required to support the warranty claim is Proof-of-Purchase and Proof-of-Installation. The claim that we pulled an old water heater out of inventory and its warranty expired in 2006 is not only false but irresponsible and defamatory. The date that the water heater was manufactured is irrelevant; the warranty period begins at the date of installation. A.O. Smith provided a six year warranty on the tank and a two year warranty on the working components. Carney Plumbing, Heating and Cooling provided a two year warranty on the labor and an additional four year warranty on the tank. Other than failure in the first to years labor is not included in the warranty. When the member contacted our office on August 21, 2008 we declined to provide service (as our labor portion of the warranty had expired) due to the prior discrepancy noted above. The individual was informed that he/she may contact A.O. Smith directly and they would process her request (the tank was and is still within the manufacturer's warranty period as evidenced by documentation provided to Angie's List. The model # of the unit in question is FPSH 50, the serial # is MK000044608. Anyone can visit A.O. Smith's website to obtain the information I have provided. The member again contacted our office and after much discussion, in the interest of responsible business practices we agreed to send a technician to their home and verify the tank failed in the warranty period so that they may proceed in obtaining a new tank under warranty. This was made very clear, at no time was any promise of a repair discussed. The statement regarding bringing the tank to our shop for repair is absurd. Leaking water heater tanks are seldom "repaired", particularly one that is in the warranty period, they are replaced with a new tank. He was simply informed that he may exchanged it at our office for a new water heater or contact the manufacturer for other alternatives. This was handled no differently than any defective product that we may encounter in our everyday lives. For example, a defective tire. Further, another plumber failed to obtain or extend a warranty tank to this individual. Any reputable plumbing contractor would have informed him that proof of purchase/installation is all that is required to process a claim and the individual had that proof in his possession. At any time the member may return the original defective tank and a new one will be provided free of any charges and still carry a warranty. This would remain available to him until the end of his tank warranty period which is June 12, 2013.

They would not provide an estimate over the phone for dishwasher installation, and for removing the old one. Charged $49.50 for service call to be applied to the final bill. He arrived and estimated an outrageous $714.00 for what he thought would be about an hour's work and might require a couple new pieces of pipe. I was flabbergasted since the dishwasher itself only cost $569.00 I paid the $49.50 and he left. Subsequently I hired an appliance person for $180.00 and was extremely pleased with the work.

IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO PROVIDE AN ESTIMATE OVER THE PHONE BECAUSE GENERALLY SPEAKING NO 2 JOBS ARE THE SAME. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE OUR TECHNICIAN DETERMINED THAT IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION PROPERLY, VIRTUALLY ALL OF THE RELATED PIPING FOR THE DISHWASHER AND UNDER THE KITCHEN SINK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, RESULTING IN CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN "AN HOUR'S WORK". OBVIOUSLY THIS APPLIANCE PERSON PROVIDED A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE INSTALLATION AND IT APPEARS WE HAVE AN APPLE VS. ORANGES SITUATION. I AM SORRY THAT THE MEMBER FELT THE PRICE FOR OUR WORK WAS OUTRAGEOUS BUT ON THE OTHER HAND I AM GRATEFUL THAT WE DIDN'T QUOTE A PRICE OVER THE PHONE ONLY TO CHANGE IT WHEN WE ARRIVED AT HIS HOME, AND HENCE FALL INTO THE "BAIT AND SWITCH" CATEGORY, OR DO A POOR JOB JUST TO FIT THE PRICE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE. REGARDING HIS WORDS OF ADVICE, WE ARE INTERESTED IN EVERY JOB AND WOULD NEVER WASTE A CLIENTS TIME, NOR OR OWN BY THROWING OUT AN EXORBITANT PRICE. OUR COMPANY IS BUILT ON TRUST AND CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WE WOULD NEVER JEOPARDIZE OUR REPUTATION FOR ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY LET ALONE $49.50.

Initial stages of project went well until changes were made w/regard to the procurment of fixtures. Estimate contained a lump sum total & fixture allowance, however contractor referred met to a supplier where available fixtures exceeded allowance amount. I found equal to/better fixtures at lower cost w/install from different supplier & cleared purchase w/contractor. Contractor failed to recognize in addition to budgeted amount for fixture, I should also recieve credit for related installation costs (labor & overhead). Contractor representative had trouble understanding this concept. I subsequent investigation & research of all fixtures & equipment & applying over 20 years of estimating experience substantiated estimate value was overly expensive e.g. contractor planned to have a custom made shower enclosure instead of using the less expensive manufacturers enclosure kit. Contractor in subsequent discussion inpugned I integrity stating we should end Project.

THE MEMBER HAS NOT BEEN TRUTHFUL IN HIS COMMENTS. ON 3-31-06 HE SIGNED A PROPOSAL/CONTRACT WITH OUR COMPANY TO PROVIDE A FULL BASEMENT BATHROOM, INCLUDING ALL FIXTURES, A SEWAGE PIT AND SEWAGE PUMP FOR THE TOTAL PRICE OF $11,995.00, INCLUDING AN $1800.00 FIXTURE ALLOWANCE. PAYMENT WAS TO BE MADE IN 3 EQUAL INSTALLMENTS INCLUDING $4,000.00 AT SIGNING. HE SENT A CHECK FOR $3500.00 AND WHEN CONTACTED STATED HE WOULD MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE AT STAGE 2. HE WOULD ONLY PAY $4000.00, NOT THE $4500.00 AS PROMISED. AFTER MUCH DELAY ON HIS PART, HE CONTACTED OUR OFFICE REQUESTING CREDITS FOR SOME OF THE FIXTURES HE MAY SUPPLY IN LIEU OF OUR PROPOSAL. HE WAS GIVEN FAIR MARKET VALUE FOR THE ITEMS HE WISHED TO SUPPLY, $1135.00. SUBSEQUENTLY HE OFFERED TO PAY A TOTAL OF $1277.04 (TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT) FOR THE BALANCE OF THE PROJECT LEAVING A DEFICIT OF $3217.96. AFTER A FEW CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM IT WAS OBVIOUS HE PLANNED THIS CAPER FROM THE START. WE MUTUALLY DECIDED THAT UNLESS HE WERE TO BE REASONABLE IT WAS BEST TO END THE RELATIONSHIP. IN REALITY, HE OWES US IN EXCESS OF $2000.00. IN THE INTEREST OF GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE, WE HAVE LET IT GO. IN CLOSING, WE ARE HAPPY TO FORWARD COPIES OF ALL DOCUMENTS INCLUDING HIS CHECKS, SHOULD YOU WISH. I THINK HIS OVERALL GRADE OF C SHOULD BE DROPPED FROM MY RECORD. THIS IS A BASELESS ASSESSMENT ON HIS PART. IT IS CLEAR HE CALCULATED THIS MANEUVER THE DAY HE SIGNED THE PROPOSAL. THANK YOU, K. CARNEY

I had just moved into my new home and used the shower for the first time when this problem occurred. Carney was a major name in the area, had a live person answering the phone on a Sunday night, and could have someone out first thing in the morning. The job was done in about 4 hours and the cost is listed above. The plumber was very polite and efficient, but I thought the cost was a bit expensive for 4 hours of work and less than $100 in parts.

Overall, I would recommend Carney. The office staff return calls within a reasonable period of time. They even called the day of the repair to tell me the workmen were on their way. This is extremely important to me as many contractors will not even return your call, much less show up on time (hello Comcast). The workmen showed up when they said they would, were polite and professional and quickly diagnosed the problem. Between removing my old sump (which they disposed of) and installing the new one, the whole thing took about two hours. They left the basement/sump area as clean as they found it. The only drawback to this company is price, but YMMV. I was getting ready to leave on vacation and needed the problem fixed quickly, before I left. Carney not only returned my calls and showed up when they said they would, the problem was fixed that day. I would definitely use them again for issues I could not resolve myself.
Description of Work: Bob and Nick of Carney Plumbing/Heating & Cooling came out and diagnosed the problem with my sump pump. The diaphragm (rubber piece that regulates the on/off switch) had outlived its natural life. Bob and Nick removed the old sump and valve check, and then put in a new valve check and sump pump.

The plumber came the same day that I called, however, he tried to sell me on all these different maintenance plans starting at $850! I only called him to unclog a drain. Then I called my husband to talk about the high cost (almost $400) and he followed me into another part of my house and listened to my conversation. We ended up getting a quote over the phone for the same job and it was over $100 less but we would have had to pay him $50 just for the estimate and he was already in our house so we had him do the job. Did not appreciate the high costs and pressure sales pitch!
Description of Work: They unclogged a drain and replaced a piece of the pipe.
