Called to get a quote for the installation of a sump pump in a home we are purchasing. I was told I had to pay a service fee for someone to come to the home and look at it before they would tell me any sort of price. I asked if they could just give me a general price range and they refused. When they say they price by the job, not hours, it would seem they could at least give me an idea of what a sump pump installation would cost. Decided to go with another provider.

Thank you for your feedback and review. I certainly understand the frustration that you experienced in regards to our pricing structure. It is our goal to eliminate surprises for both the client and for ourselves. We have straightforward, upfront pricing for our clients before any work is done, so that our clients are not surprised at the end of the job by any hidden fees. In similar fashion, we try to avoid surprises over the phone as well. If we give an estimate over the phone for a job we have never seen, it can lead to confusion for both parties. We desire to remove the guesswork from pricing for all parties involved in favor of physical examination and accurate prices. I hope that this can shed some light on why we uphold this practice. Thank you for contacting us and for sharing your experience.

I want to start by saying I feel this is a very reputable company. The deal I purchased wasn't what I expected. $200 of labor for $99. I was hoping to have my garbage disposal and two bathroom faucets replaced. I had already purchased the fixtures and was hoping my Deal would come close to covering the labor. I should have researched their pricing structure before I purchased the Deal. Their pricing is charged by the service not by hour. Their price for replacing a garbage disposal was $235 (did not include the garbage disposal itself). That took care of my $200 worth of labor and I paid an additional $35. The estimate for installing my two faucets shocked me. The technician said he would need to replace my four shutoff valves to do the installation. That was about $250 per water line (4). My estimate was over $1000! I went to the hardware store and was advised to what I needed and replaced the faucets myself. (My current shutoff valves worked just fine). Again, I feel this would be a great company for complicated jobs. Small jobs, not so much. I will be looking for a "Handy Man" in the future for these types of jobs in the future.

Thank you for your recent review and feedback. We value the story of every customer as a way to help us improve our business. Thank you also for your compliments. We strive to provide premier service to our customers and make them feel comfortable with every service. I regret to hear of your dissatisfaction with your recent service and I wanted to address some of the concerns you mentioned. Indeed our pricing is done by the job and not by the hour. We have what we call "straight-forward, upfront pricing" so that any customer can see the exact price of any repair BEFORE proceeding with the work. We want to ensure that there are no surprises at the end of a call or hidden fees. Installing a customer supplied garbage disposal can be a difficult or easy process. As plumbers, we are never quite sure what all a job will entail until we are in the midst of it. As such, we try to keep our pricing inline with the job and the professional service rendered. All of the work that we do is warrantied for 1 year to provide you with peace of mind. Installing faucets is a process that can have similar difficulties. The reason that we highly recommend replacing old shut off valves is similar to the reason mechanics recommend replacing a clutch if you ever replace a transmission. The idea is that while we are involved in the process, it is prudent to update the "whole system" for a better overall product than wish you had done so later. New shutoff valves provide a more complete and superior service when replacing faucets and can help alleviate any future problems down the road. We do thank you for sharing your experience and viewpoint. We would welcome more discussion regarding this issue and/or any questions or service needed in the future. Thank you!

FANTASTIC. We had two hot water heaters for two different sides of the house and one broke. It would have cost $3,000 to replace the water heater because it was on the inside of the house, but the plumber told us it would be cheaper to just replumb the plumbing and use one water heater. He did and its been GREAT!!!! Thanks Ben Franklin.

Initial scheduling was bad because the job ahead of ours was longer than expected and the dispatcher wasn't aware of the distances. They made up for it by doing all the extra work that was needed on my job for free. I think I won big time on that one, and the contractor was very good.

We purchased a "Big Deal" -- $99 for $200 of plumbing service. So when we called to make the appointment we were told there would be a $76 truck charge. This company is 1.5 miles from our house. There was no mention of this $76 fee in the "deal" that I responded to. So we would actually be paying $175 for $200 of service. How is that a savings? They make you think you're getting $200 worth of service for $99. I feel that is deceptive. So I called Angies List to complain. They contacted Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, who agreed to take the $76 charge off since it wasn't mentioned in the ad. I made the appointment and the day the plumber came out we had a tiny leak in a pipe in the basement. So we asked that it be fixed first. That alone was $236.00!! So we were over the $200 anyway. He also tried to get us to sign up for their membership program which of couse would cost more. Then he tried to charge us the $76.00 fee and my husband told him to call his company, which he did, and was told not to charge us that fee. I don't think ANYBODY should be charged that fee because it really is a very minimal savings. Now I think they changed their Big Deal to include that fee. So what's the Big Deal?

Thank you for your feedback and I’m sorry for any confusion that was experienced. In this situation, we were able to speak to the client on several occasions. The first was after the Big Deal had been purchased during the scheduling process. We explained that we charge a service call fee, (Our service call fee allows are professional plumber to come to the home and investigate the problem in question. After evaluation, we present a straightforward, upfront price of the exact price of the repair.), but that the $199 credit could be used as payment towards anything on the final bill. The client scheduled service but called back later to clarify. Again, we explained that the big deal that was purchased could be used towards the service call fee. The client decided against scheduling an appointment. Later, the client called again to proceed with scheduling. We ran the call as we normally do and discovered a leak in the copper piping. We presented the exact price of repair before proceeding with any work and the client signed off on the repair allowing us to fix the pipe. I apologize for the communication error that occurred when our plumber referred to our service call fee. The message had not been clearly passed along and we are sorry that we had to clarify this subject again when on site. After confirming, the plumber waived the service call fee and completed the call. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing charges a service call fee on every repair call. This fee allows our highly trained, professional plumber to arrive at the home in a fully stocked truck and examine the situation for the cause and solution of any problems. After diagnosis, the plumber then presents an exact price of options to resolve the situation. We were not trying to be deceptive in assessing this since it is our normal practice. It is true, that it was not originally noted in our earlier versions of this “big deal,” since it is discussed on every phone scheduling call and is agreed upon by the customer before we schedule. We have since changed the wording of the deal to for clarity purposes. The “big deal” in reference here was able to be used towards any charges incurred during the appointment including the service call fee. We believe that the service call fee (diagnosing the situation and presenting solutions) is part of the service, and being so, it is acceptably considered “plumbing service” as described by the “big deal.” We regret that this was a frustration for the customer, but we tried to explain these details during our phone conversations prior to running the call. Again, we regret the confusion and frustration caused by this call, but tried to explain our situation clearly. We would welcome more discussion if desired.

He gave us an estimate on three other problems that we just couldn't afford to fix (from ANY plumber) - we are moving. So, he gave us an EXACT estimate - we used the coupon and it was great!! There is a $76 service charge, but that was $25 less than the last plumbers who came!!!! He fixed everything AND CLEANED UP EVERYTHING!!! He fixed the ice maker water line that no one else could fix (replaced the parts on our line and in the fridge mechanism!!). Knew exactly what to do and was really friendly and courteous and my dogs just loved him (they don't like ANY strangers!!). Brian was just a great guy who was EXPERT!! Thank YOU!! A lot of the reviews complain about these plumbers - but ASK FOR BRIAN - he's kind of new - but he is absolutely GREAT!!! They may seem to cost more money than the local sole plumbers - but I called them SPECIFICALLY because NO MATTER WHAT - the local plumbers (four of them) all fixed a problem - only to have it break a week or two later - and we had to PAY to fix it AGAIN - every single time. Ben Franklin Plumbers guarantee their work for two years - and I believe that they RARELY or NEVER have to come back and fix it!!! They are great!
Description of Work: Really knowledgeable and expert plumber looked at 6 plumbing problems and based on the cost (we are moving in 6 months), we needed 3 problems fixed. The unclogged a VERY clogged toilet upstairs with a VERY long and powerful snake (we have three teenage boys - gross !!). Then he replaced the guts in the downstairs toilet - a toilet that has been running for two weeks (we probably saved the cost of the service in the water alone!!). Then he connected our new frig/freezer ice maker that the installers and another plumber couldn't fix!!!!

They didn’t do a good job because water came out of the toilet and made a mess in the bathroom that they did not clean up. There are times when a business must admit that they have dropped the ball and this is one of those times. We are sincerely sorry for not getting back to the client regarding her estimate. The client called us 4/9/13 with a clogged pipeline. Several of our plumbers went to her service that day and diagnosed the situation. We determined that using our sewer jetter was the best course of action and proceeded to clear the line with a high pressured stream of water. After this process, we confirmed that the line was clear using one of our drain cameras resulting in a final bill of $675.00. In using the camera, we determined that there was a belly in the pipeline, meaning that the clog would most likely happen again. We then made the suggestion that she should have the pipeline fixed to prevent future problems, but no further work was done at that time. The client called back into our office a few days later requesting an official estimate to have the sewer line corrected. I’m afraid here is where we lost track of the process. Our estimator was out of the office that week, and somehow the message was not relayed to him upon his return. It is to our shame that we were not better able to accommodate this client’s request and we make no excuse for our lack of care. In regards to the mess in the bathroom, we make it a high priority to leave the customer’s home in as good a condition as we found it if not better. Our plumbers are disciplined to clean their work areas after any job and if we failed to do so in this situation it would be completely out of character. We wish the client would have pointed it out to us sooner than 3 months after the call so we could have addressed it at the time. Again, we apologize for not following up on the estimate. We fixed the problem at hand when we were called to service, but we did not complete our service the way we normally practice. Thank you for your feedback on this issue.

plumber was very prompt (showed up in less than an hour) and professional and explained estimate, very satisfied with those aspects. Although everything was done satisfactorily, we felt that the price was WAY too high, and in BF's defense, the price was tweaked a bit lower after completion of the job because it was completed earlier and easier than originally anticipated. However, the job was fairly simple (more simpler than we originally anticipated) and did not involve any soldering, etc. so the price still seamed high ($311 for three shut off valves). Will probably use this company again, but only in an emergency situation.

He was professional, prompt, and explained the problem. He completed repair of both issues described above very quickly. I felt however that we may have paid extra for the prompt service and convenience, which this company is noted for. Considering that we'd already paid $99 before he walked in the door, the added expense seemed too high. The parts were not expensive, and he completed each job in a matter of minutes. While I do recommend this company, since they were extremely prompt and professional, and repaired the problems, I wish we would've gotten other estimates first.
Description of Work: The wall turn valves attached to my washer line hoses was original to house, and the hot water valve turned very hard, and not fully. The plumber removed the old, and attached new hot and cold water valves in a matter of minutes. He also inspected the PVC pipes under our kitchen sink from both the sink drains and the garbage disposal. He felt the reason one area came loose frequently and leaked under the sink was because a length of pipe was too short. Again, in a matter of minutes, he added an extra piece, which corrected the problem.

Thank you for your feedback and your business. I am sorry that you feel dissatisfied with our service and i wanted to explain a little more detail about your specific job. In your specific case, the clog was beyond the toilet and in the sewer pipe so a typical toilet unclog would not have worked. The best solution for this situation is to completely remove the toilet to provide access to the pipe for unclogging. This process is labor intensive, specifically because the toilet must be reset without leaks. The device we used to clear your line is called a Spartan snake. This tool alone is $1200, but gets the job done. As I mentioned earlier, one of the trickiest parts of pulling a toilet is the resetting. We have to make sure that the wax ring is in good condition and set the toilet with precision to assure no leaking. We also guarantee that the toilet will not leak from the wax ring for up to 2 years. All of these elements add up to a major component of the price. Each of our plumbers is also highly trained. You mention that he did not know what he was doing, but we have on record that the pipe was cleared and the problem was fixed. Besides training, our plumbers respect your home and your time. We guarantee that we will be on time or we will be you $5 for every minute that we are late up to $300. Every plumber wears shoe covers and uniforms and is clean and professional in your home. We believe that our plumbers are a notch above the rest and we are proud to have them serve our customers. Lastly, our maintenance program affords members discounted parts and service. However, it also provides your home with a completely plumbing inspection, a water heater flush, discounted service call fees, and priority service.Had you joined the program you would have received discounts for the service performed that day as well as any in the future and all of the before mentioned benefits. I hope that these details have helped you more fully understand any price frustrations. Again, i apologize for your dissatisfaction.

We called to get an estimate on installing a drain to connect our house to the city sewage, as we got a letter from our borough saying that we have to have this done by October of 2013. Benjamin Franklin set up an appointment with us to come on 12/6 between the hours of 10 and Noon to look things over and give an estimate. Nobody showed up, so I called them at about 12:30. The man answering the phone had no clue why nobody showed up, but promised I'd receive a call back within the next 5 minutes to explain. I received the call and the dispatcher told me that they don't do that kind of work. My obvious immediate thoughts were why I didn't hear about this before, why an appointment was even scheduled, and why I didn't even receive a call when someone didn't show. I lodged a complaint on the corporate web site and received a call back from the franchise owner a couple hours later. He was actually a very nice man and was very apologetic. It was he who dropped the ball. He said that he got busy and forgot to call me. Please note that I give the man a lot of credit for calling me and apologizing. He obviously meant it, but it makes me wonder if he'd have called me at all had I not put a complaint on the main company's web site. While he was a nice guy and I certainly accepted his apology, I can say without a doubt that I won't do business with them in the future. Sure, they apparently don't do sewer lines, but being a homeowner, I'm sure to need a plumber for something else at some point in the future. It just won't be them. In this case, the first impression was a bad one. And first impressions can often be lasting impressions. Oddly enough, their web site touts punctuality as one of the main differentiators of them versus other plumbers. All of that put together has left a really bad impression with us.

Thank you for your feedback, and again we apologize for our mistake. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we still fall short of perfection and I'm afraid that is what happened in this case. As I explained on the phone, I was dealing with an emergency call and got lost in the job to the point that I failed to remember to call you back to let you know more information about your job. I am deeply sorry and assure you that this is an extreme rarity. As I also explained on the phone, I am glad to compensate you for any time lost from work for missing the appointment. You are correct in saying that our website touts our punctuality. It does, and we do make it one of our highest goals. We stand behind our on time guarantee so much that we actually will pay you $5 for every minute we are late (up to $300). Again, I am willing to compensate you for my mistake and I do apologize. I understand that our first impression was a poor one, and I regret the loss of your business. It is moments like this that remind me of the importance of standing behind what we do and what we say. If you ever change your mind, I hope that you will experience the revenues of our constant improving efforts.

The technician made sure I understood how much it would cost before he started the repair. I had purchased a coupon for $99.00 and it cost me an additional $231.00. So the total was $310.00. This seemed to me to be high but I had already spent $99.00 on the coupon. I agreed with the total and the work was completed. I will probably not use this company again due to the cost.
Description of Work: A part on my toilet was making noise and needed to be replaced. The service tech was on time. He quickly found the problem and one piece in the tank had to be replaced. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He cleaned up after the repair completely. The repair took aproximately 10 minutes and was performed completely satisfactorily.

They were very quick to respond. They were very pleasant and professional. They explained things thoroughly. Their prices were high though. I think I would call them again if I needed to because I feel comfortable with them and trust them.
Description of Work: Benjamin Franklin Plumbing replaced a pump for me and made sure that it was fixed to the wall.

Great customer service. Received a quick friendly call from Benjamin Plumbing. In less than 24 hours, I had Tim at my house, my toiletunclogged and an outside water pipe (that burst during winter) replaced. Tim was extremely professional, walked me through the work he was going to do, reviewed costs with me prior to starting any service. He proceeded to put his shoe covers on, carry his tools upstairs, and started his work. Extremely clean, from start to finish, and he made sure I was completely satisfied with the service. Can't say how excited I was to actually have a service provider show up on time for the said appointment time! We will definitely use them again! We will also be sure to recommend to our family and friends.
Description of Work: Upstairs toilet was clogged. My husband tried and tried to get it to flush but to no avail. We also have an outside pipe that leads out from under our basement and deck. My husband remembered to turn off the water however forgot to drain the pipe prior to winter setting in. Pipe burst in Nov (but no real emergency since we had a water shut off valve installed in the house one year prior)
