Steelway Cellar Doors does not cut corners on anything we do. We manufacture everything we install and we do it all with our own employees and never use subcontractors. This means you can be assured that we do the job right and if you want something unique that we have the ability to do the job. We only do basement entrances - we don't finish basements, do waterproofing or decks or additions. Excavating next to your home and opening up your foundation wall is a big deal that's why we insist on gettting permits so you can be assured that the job is done right. We have specialized equipment to do the job with the minimal amount of interuption to your home - engineered headers, special saws to reduce dust and yard mats to protect your yard. All part of the benefit of using a company that specializes in one thing.

Description of Work: I had a rusted Bilco cellar door that needed to be replaced. They came out a few weeks earlier to assess the situation and gave me a price quote, which I accepted. Their office called me to schedule the work, but due to an emergency, we had to re-schedule for a few days later. That presented no problem and everything went smoothly. The people I spoke with were all personable and easy to work with. They did everything they said they would and the final result looks terrific.

Again, very patient. I would highly recommend Steelway to anyone in need of Basement Egress. They have the best install team and the best customer service team.
Description of Work: I have dealt with Contractors before and I have experienced problems. When I decided to do Basement Egress, I looked for someone who was highly recommended. ! At least two Home Improvement Contractors gave me a Steelway Cellar Doors recommendation. From start to completion dealing with Steelway was a great experience! Our Consultant Tate was loaded with knowledge. He was patient and thorough! The install team –Brant, Ben and John, were not only great at their technical abilities, but easy to talk with and made me feel very comfortable. They took their time and it was obvious they were skilled in their trade. Because of some “not so pleasant experiences” with other contractors I had a lot of questions. And also I have some unexpected issues before the installation. I have to change the installation date 3 times. I call the office many , many times, and always found the staff and the administrative people extremely accommodating.Larry is a great manager, he helped me so many times.

The process involved faxing them a drawing and some measurements, followed by a phone call to check on my requirements. The person I spoke to was very helpful and professional, and made good recommendations about sizing. There was a slight miscommunication about my order and initially only one cover was ready when I came to pick them up, but this was quickly sorted out, and again the staff were responsive and professional. The quality of the covers is absolutely excellent and I would happily use this company again.

We had to postpone our original construction date due to legal issues. The company was very accommodating to our needs. They, however, did not accurately and adequately convey to us the size and weight of the equipment and trucks required ( which was a concern of our neighbor and us due to possible damage to piping under the ground). They did the install very well to the point of installing the drainage pipe to the sump pump and did not listen to our direction concerning to which pipe they were to install it. Instead they used a clean-out opening which was never meant to be used for that purpose. They did listen to our concern and had to return about a week later to correct the problem which they did.
Description of Work: Excavated pit for egress window for basement, cut through basement foundation to install egress window, installed one-piece concrete walls and steps from window up to backyard soil level; installed window. Later returned to install piping from the pit sump pump to the basement sump pump.

They were extremely prompt, able to come withing 24 hours of me calling. Very courteous, very knowledgable. They spoke to me about different options -- one door vs. two doors, for example -- and were able to provide explanations for the utility of each option. Mostly, it was just such a relief to find someone able to do a corner cellar door, after looking for so long. I'm pleased with the estimate, and will definitely contract them for service.
Description of Work: I live in a rowhouse, and my cellar door abuts a wall I share with my neighbor. Considering the ubiquity of rowhouses in Philly, I figured many places would offer "corner" doors, but after trying many different avenues -- Home Depot, handymen, various lumbar yards -- no one seemed able to do it. I found Steelway's website, and they offer exactly the right kind of door. While they have an order form on their website for submitting measurements, I didn't want to take the chance of doing it incorrectly, so they came to take measurements and provide an estimate.

The window itself and egress was fine however they are pure demolitionists. They left a jagged hole in the dry wall which was covered in splattered concrete. They pulled back the carpet, to protect it, but that ruined the carpet as they left it covered in wet cement. We had to pay to get it cleaned and reinstalled. It costs us an extra $600 to make it look like a window and repair the carpet. They really need a finisher for the prices they charge! If you don't have a finished basement...go for it! If you have a finished basement...I would think twice.
Description of Work: They installed an egress window in our finished basement. They key is "finished" basement. Update 12/09/2012: The owner personally reached out to me and my husband about our previous experience. I have to say that he is very passionate about ensuring his customers are satisfied. I was very impressed with his follow-up and his desire to get a better understanding of the situation. He has addressed the situation to our satisfaction and I would gladly recommend him in the future because he truly cares about his customers!

We were surprised to see this review months later. As our past history will show , we have a consistently good rating and are responsive to our clients needs. We do as many as 10 or more of these a week. Because of our experience we clearly spell out information that correlates directly to our Clients concerns. If we had soiled the carpet that was peeled back, we would have been more than happy to pay for it. Now that we are aware we will make that offer for reimbursement. It is not fair to have references to pricing as it makes it appear we are over charging, when we are actually very reasonably priced for the service and timeline we perform and follow. Here is the wording in our agreement that pertains directly to the Clients concerns------ a. These are construction vehicles and may leave marks. In rare cases they can leave ruts that are quite deep. 5. If you have a finished basement we will use reasonable care to remove the drywall where the opening is to go. We are not responsible for restoring the wall once we are finished. a. This service can be arranged in advance with a signed change order and an additional cost. 6. We then cut a hole in your foundation 48 X 50 or 48 X 60 (or other custom size if necessary) depending on your situation. We use a hydraulic powered, water cooled track saw to minimize dust. There will be a small amount of water that will make it into the basement (that we clean with a shop-vac). If you have carpeting you will need to pull it back about 6 feet. I do not know how we can make it any clear, but we will certianly try. We appreciate our Clients concerns.

I liked the product but the installer was a nightmare. The owner was supposed to come down but did not. The installer made a mess of the caulk. Update 11/15/2012: They removed the entire existing door. They created custom plates to make sure the door was flush on the wall. They also redid all of the caulking. They went above and beyond to correct an issue and I am more than satisfied. I am very impressed with their responsiveness and willingness to correct any issues with their work.

Brant came for the install on a Friday only to find the door would not fit correctly. He apologized and promised they would rush order another door asap. They did as promised and Brant came back the following Wednesday for the install. He had to do a lot more custom fit than was originally anticipated. The original door was supposed to be a double opening but because of the problem, the door is single and is very heavy to lift. Brant promised he will come back to add an opener that will make it easier to lift. He is very courteous and professional and did an excellent job. I would definitely recommend this company again.

It was a very smooth transaction, with one exception. The guy arrived the day of the appointment and let us know that he had to reschedule. There was another contractor there and they decided to reschedule so that they wouldn't be in each other's way. I was not part of the decision and the installation could have taken place on the original scheduled day.

I was given the impression that it would take only 1 day to install the egress and 2 weeks to get the vertical door installed. The egress system was installed in one day as promised, but had many issues with the entry (vertical door.) The door had to be ordered because the opening in my basement was not the standard size. The installer said it would be no longer than 2 to 3 weeks to get the door in and installed. I called Steelway after 2 weeks and the door still hadn't arrived from the manufacturer. After three weeks they stated the manufacturer called and the door had arrived. Unfortunately this was not true. The door that had arrived was the wrong door. I was unhappy with the timeframe on the door but this was not Steelways fault. The only issue I had was with the commnication on the door delay. I talked with Carter (one of the owners) and he promised that the communication issues would be further looked into by his team. My overall experience with Steelway was good.

The member and I spoke to address his concerns about the delivery of the cut-down vertical door. His situation was unique in that he needed a custom made short vertical door at the bottom of the stairs. Unfortunately when the door arrived it was not made correctly and we simply ordered the door again and did not make the call to the member as we should have. We have customer service training once a month and we make every attempt to exceed customers' expectations in everything we do. Hopefully it is apparent that the installation of the basement stairs was done to the member satisfaction.

Because of the very heavy trucks they use, make sure you don't have this work done right after a rain. We were lucky in the fact that it rained a fair amount the previous Thursday, but Friday afternoon into Saturday, we had strong winds to dry everything fairly well. We were the second install of the day, and they arrived late because of unforseen issues at the previous job, and because of this they couldn't get to the quarry in time to get the modified stone they use for backfill. They said they'd be back at 3pm the next day to finish the job, and at exactly 3pm, they honored their word and finished in about an hour. They did leave extra modified stone because the fill would settle, and we had rain the next day and it did as they said it would. I've since shoveled most of that pile into the hole. This is something that will happen...gravity, you know. We are going to have a concrete slab put in around it to connect the new entrance with the existing patio and a walk out to the shed. Now, their standard price is $4500, but we got galvanized doors and modified stone fill instead of dirt because we have a high water table and clay soil, but overall, great job and well worth the price.
Description of Work: They installed a prefab concrete basement stair unit with galvanized, primed bilco doors. They faced a tight squeeze on our side yard to get their boom truck, excavator, and dump truck in, but did it very well with rubber mats to protect the yard and with all the heavy equipment they used, there was minimal yard damage. They excavated in our chosen location and attached that honkin' 3' diameter, remote controlled masonry saw to cut the opening in our poured concrete basement wall. Fun watching it! They also covered the interior with a tarp to minimize the mess from the water used in cooling the masonry blade. Well thought out.

I had a good experience with Steelway. I submitted dimensions of the 2 covers via their website, and they sent me a draft sketch with an invitation to discuss. They were helpful and responsive when I called, and adjusted the dimensions to save some money. They agreed to perform some extra services, eg, painting the frames white rather than the standard base red color. There was one slight miscommunication (they originally made just one cover rather than 2) but that could easily have been my fault. The quality of the covers is excellent and the service I received was professional and friendly. I'd recommend Steelway to anyone seeking custom covers.

Started off as a positive experience. Good product, reasonable price point, salesperson arrived timely. It went wierd from there. He raised an installation concern and suggested a workaround. We would not agree to his workaround. He then backed away from his concern and told us everything would be OK. When we challenged his reversal, he got defensive. We were asked if we were ready to commit and we advised that given the concerns raised we would want to discuss the decision further. He abruptly stormed out of our house. We decided to install a window instead of a door, which is the primary reason Steelway did not get the business. If we had decided to install a door, we likely would not have selected Steelway simply because of the salesperson's unprofessional behavior. But it didn't stop there. Approximately 2 months after coming to our home, the salesperson called to determine the status of our job. I advised we opted for the window based upon the concerns he raised. When I was asked if we selected a different contractor for the window, I answered in the affirmative, to which he replied "Alrighty" and hung up. I reached out to Steelway to simply advise of my unusual experience with the salesperson and report the salesperson's behavior was unprofessional and rude. I was told the behavior didn't seem rude at all. Althought this is purely speculation on my part, I suspect I was talking to the salesperson himself. I then added I was going to post the experience on Angie's list. I believe they have a good product, but I wouldn't recommend calling them unless you were absolutely certain you were going with their product.

We always like feedback such as this report to make sure we are treating everyone professionally. Certainly this does not sound like a good experience and in contrast to our montra of "Prompt, Polite and Professional". We work hard each day to make sure we treat customers, and prospective customers, like we would want to be treated. Hopefully by reading other reviews it is clear we try to satisfy each customer's unique situation. While we may never know what went wrong here, there are usually many sides to a story like this, we do appreciate the feedback and will use it to remind our salesmen that we must always be "Prompt, Polite and Professional".

I had Steelway create a custom steel fabricated door for our cellar access. To save money I did the installation myself. The salesman was prompt and good to work with. When the door was delivered I was a little disappointed with the workmanship. The doors are provided primed. The priming job was a sloppy, with hardened drips in many locations. Holes for installation were not pre-drilled, even though it was clearly evident that there would be no obstructions at installation. I spoke with the Steelway and they explained, somewhat ridiculously, that the prime coat is typically not done well because you need to sand and provide a finish coat. In addition Steelway offered to come out and drill the holes if it would make me happy. I did not take them up on it, but I was happy that they had given the offer. As an overall experience I rate Steelway as a "B" because of the workmanship and because I felt that it was a little expensive for what they provide. However I am happy with the final product and would likely use Steelway again if I needed a similar service.

We have been looking for a reliable contractor for several years and have always run into them at the Phila Home Show. We finally asked for an evaluation. The person who came out to look at our project and provide the estimate was very knowledgeable of problems and how to avoid. Our secret weapon was the presence of my father-in-law who is a building inspector and former homebuilder - but we did not show our hand. We asked questions and then dad asked his - getting more and more pointed/technical/codes and the estimator knew the answers and the problems presented...and in the end - dad told him he was impressed with his knowledge. They came this Thursday at 8:00 am and were finished before 1:30 pm. Yes, Dad came and watched and was very pleased. A bonus was that the owner of the company was our installer. He was very friendly, explained the equipment to our 5-year-old son. Rates a A++
Description of Work: Our house has a poured foundation/brick above ground that required a basement access from outside. Problems were the well lines, septic lines and utilities all underground. Wanted quality and affordability and did not want to deal with problems down the road. Project length - 5 hours including cleanup. Precast stairs and primer coated galvanized steel door (bilco-type).
