Description of Work: Do get other estimates before you meet with the Andersen window salesman. So you have something to compare their product and prices to. We went with Andersen and are very pleased with the quality and installation.

The representative from Andersen took the time and was very thorough in explaining the product. However, at the end of the consult, the representative was very pushy about us purchasing at least 'something' that very day. I was not happy, because the consult took 2.5 hours, and I did not appreciate being harassed to commit the very same day.
Description of Work: No services. We had an in house estimate for windows.

Response from Renewal by Andersen of Philadelphia
Dear Customer, I have read your review and I thought we owed you an apology. At Renewal by Andersen we strive to deliver service that exceeds the sometimes lacking level of customer interaction typical of home improvement. You said you felt Mark McGovern was pushy, and wanted a decision from you on the night of your appointment. As you know, we offer an incentive to homeowners who make a purchase on the day we visit. We do this because fewer visits reduce operational costs, and we pass those savings onto the customer. You need time to weigh the pros and cons before making such a substantial purchase. I’m sure Mark can work with you to find a way for you to get the best windows (and installation) at a price that makes sense to you… Sorry for the strength of the last statement, but every person in our company is passionate about our windows. We truly believe we offer the best window and installation combination available today. If you have a moment, please go to Google and see what some of our past customers have to say: http://****/udsua Words cannot express how truly sorry we are for the frustration and inconvenience we caused you. Your review hit home because Renewal by Andersen strives to provide a “wow” experience every step of the way, and in your case we failed. But I’m glad you posted this review, because we can learn from what you have said. I do hope you’ll give us another chance to earn your business. I suspect Mark McGovern may have already re-contacted you, but I wanted to be sure you know we heard your comments in the home office. Sincerely, Suzanne January Customer Service Manager

The installers arrived on time and were courteous, obviously experienced, and proficient in their craft. I was especially impressed with George Paskiewicz, the ?team leader.? He worked on the outside of each window with precision even though it was raining during most of the installation. The gentleman who did most of the work on the portion of the bay window that is inside the house was extremely skilled in carpentry making sure that the end result was beautiful. All in all, I couldn?t be more pleased with the quality and appearance of the windows, both inside and outside, or with their installation. This is a very professional company, and I would highly recommend them to anyone. My only complaint is with the salesman who initially came to my house. After giving me a price, he refused to accept the coupon that I had from Angie?s List. This almost cost him the contract. If I had not been so impressed with the quality of the windows, I would not have used this company. Renewal by Anderson should not place a coupon on Angie?s List if they are not going to honor it. The salesman claimed that I was already getting a discount and therefore could not use the coupon. The coupon said nothing about not being usable if a discount was already being applied. Besides, purchasers of items like this are always told they are getting a discount. Bear in mind that windows from Renewal by Anderson are very high-priced compared to just about any other window company.
Description of Work: Six windows in my house were replaced. Two of the windows were replaced with a bay window.

I want to be super detailed so everyone reading knows what to expect. It is clear from previous reviews that the weakest part of the process is the sales presentation. That is entirely accurate. Andersen will insist on all decision makers to be present and they will also grossly underestimate the time it takes to do that presentation. We were solicited from a neighborhood canvass. We were quickly scheduled for 2 days later in the evening. We were told it would be 60-90 minutes; after 2.5 hours, our salesperson was still there. With a 3 year old, that can be pretty tough. Our salesman was very nice and very knowledgable overall. He had demonstrations and all sorts of information with him. Some things to know: One, pay careful attention to the flip charts. At least twice, we caught situations where there was not an "apples to apples" comparison. For example: Comparing a high end, super premium window (in terms of cost) to the Andersen product when the Andersen product is not "super premium". That's like comparing a Lexus to a Ford and noting a price difference. There IS a price difference; however, the products are not the same. Our salesperson mentioned other brands, and some of that information is debatable. Do some internet research. Some other things to note: Our salesperson brought in a demonstration window for us to view. This was very helpful. However, one thing he had us do was raise and lower the window to demonstrate how easy they raise and lower. This is an inaccurate demonstration because the demo window is not installed in a wall! Any free window will raise or lower easily! Now that these windows are installed, they do raise somewhat easily, but nowhere near as easily as the free standing window. Certainly not "with one finger" as was mentioned to us. We received an initial quotation of over $40,000 for all of the windows in our home. The final price was just above $30K, which was nowhere in our budget. I will say that our salesperson did not push for a "complete" replacement, instead suggesting that we do a "partial" replacement to start. We were not given much time to talk between us (husband and wife type of talk) but eventually were able to agree to get 7 windows done for over $8,000. The financing we were offered was not terribly competitive so we took the 1 year no interest financing and are working to pay that off before the year is over. Our measurement took place just a few days later and we were installed in a matter of weeks after that. Where Andersen fails in the sales pitch, they make up for in installation. Yes, it was annoying to take down window treatments and move some furniture. I agree. However, the people that showed up to my home were PROFESSIONAL. They spoke clear English. They cleaned up after themselves. They were PLEASANT to be around and I never felt uncomfortable. The job was done in half of a day. I have had many contractors come to our home to do various things and this was the best experience by far. Once we were able to secure additional financing (through a home improvement loan from the state), we contacted Andersen again to get more windows done. My suggestion is this: Do a partial installation first, then contact for more windows. You will find the pricing is...different. Case in point: We had 7 windows replaced at a cost of about $8500. We then contracted for 12 more windows at a cost of $17,000. We have just 2 windows remaining - are you paying attention to the math here? Our original quote was just over $30,000, but we've gotten all but 2 windows replaced for under $26,000. The 2 remaining windows are small and standard, and should cost us another $3,000 or so...lower than the quote we received on Night #1 for the whole house. Having lived with these windows for a while now, I can say they are lovely. They are sturdy. They do not leak and they open and lock easily. The installation experience was superior to any other contractor I've dealt with. The sales pitch and pricing was definitely not. We are not sorry we used them. If you go into the experience knowing that the sales pitch will be nearly unbearable, you will be happy with the finished product because it's quite nice.
Description of Work: Replaced approximately 18 windows in our home over 2 visits. The first was financed through Andersen and the other was financed through a home improvement loan.

Congratulations to Marvin Windows who treated me with respect and courtesy and has a better product. You can replace all 34 of my over sized windows!
Description of Work: It's sad that a company that is in an era of equal rights requires that a woman's husband be present in order to shop for windows! After the appalling news that the only way that they would come out to my home for a quote is with both married people there I thought the lady that was talking to me was kidding. I asked her if she was kidding she said that it is their policy to have both people in the home present for the measure and to see the products (which I had already looked at on line). My husband works VERY long hours and after 17 years of me doing all of the "shopping" for our home improvements in all four of our homes, I was offended to say the least. I was sure that women's rights had come much further but not with this company. Congratulations to Marvin Windows who treated me with respect and courtesy and has a better product. You can replace all 34 of my over sized windows!

Response from Renewal by Andersen of Philadelphia
Dear Customer, I read your comments, and would like to apologize for offending you. We certainly want the opportunity to earn your business and hope in the future you will consider us. After ready your review, I wanted to assure you that Renewal by Andersen is NOT a sexist company. We do believe in equal rights and do NOT discriminate against women nor do we require that a woman’s husband be present when we visit. Since we recognize that windows are a major purchase you will be living with for decades, we generally ask all homeowners, regardless of gender, to be present when we visit. Over the years, we’ve found this takes up less time for all involved. By speaking to everyone together, our foreman can answer all of your detailed questions up front without multiple return trips. This practice virtually guarantees there will be no misunderstandings that could cause either of you to be unhappy in the long run. You might ask why we can’t make a 2nd trip to visit with another homeowner at a later date, and the answer is we will do so happily if necessary. However, please be sensitive to the fact that we are based in King of Prussia. While sending an experienced foreman to your home in Thornton is free to you, it is not free to us… so when people are willing to meet us together we really do appreciate it! In the end, we’re not just providing a window. We’re very “concerned with providing good service.” You’ll find this statement supported by the Angie’s List reviews on this page, and in a broader sense on Google (go to https://plus.google.com/115774910744177963034/about?gl=us&hl=en). Our mission is to WOW customers, and erase the negative home improvement image that gives our industry a bad name. If you or your spouse truly believe both of you will be best served by one of you meeting with our foreman alone, we will respect your wishes. We just hope you’ll consider the benefits of a joint meeting as well. I’ll reach out to you later in the week to see if you’d like to reconsider and have a foreman to your home. Regardless, I hope you’ll accept the small gift I’ve e-mailed to you as an apology for not serving you to your satisfaction. Sincerely, Suzanne January Customer Service Manager

Sales rep came within a few days of calling for a quote. All questions were answered, including which doors qualified for a tax credit. Product was ordered and scheduled for installation within 10 days. The patio door is very good quality and worth the cost. They brought a large crew and got the job finished within an hour. A tax credit certificate was presented upon completion. I will use them again for door and window needs.

They were wonderful. They knew exactly what they were doing and the installers were amazing, I couldn't believe it. They told me it would be a 2 day project but got it done in 1 day. They were here on time and responded great to my phone calls. They cleaned up after themselves and they just kept working and didn't stop. I can't say enough and the windows are great. If i have any other work to be done, I would absolutely call them first. I would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I had a company come by a recommendation I got before Renewal by Andersen to do a smaller job on the kitchen windows. They were awful but I had to still replace 12 windows which was going to be an expense, so I had to make sure it was the right company. I checked around and spoke with them and found them to be very accommodating. They talked to me about the work, explained what they thought and even helped pick out the color of the window to match the stone.

They were very good windows. The service was excellent. They came in on time. It only took them about an hour and a half to do all three windows. They were excellent. They are a little bit on the high side, possibly. We didn't do any comparisons. We might have been able to get the work done for cheaper, but not at the same quality.

Oh what an awful experience. Yes, they called the day before to confirm. Yes, they asked whether my husband and I would both be present (but did NOT explain that it was policy; only innocently asked whether we would both be there, and did not elaborate at all). Yes, my husband was present but was occupied with our toddler (since I'm the decider, I would take the meeting and husband would entertain the child). Yes, my husband left at one point after the meeting started to take the child out. After my husband left, the salesperson continued to spend 40+ minutes talking about options for replacing my broken window, but he also walked around my house telling me about how faulty other windows are and using scare tactics that my other windows needed to be replaced, despite that I wasn't looking for feedback on other windows. I actually had to steer him back to my original window of concern. After going thru various options, I asked for pricing info, and the salesperson refused to give me pricing because my husband had left. I implored him to provide me with the information, and he got very upset and claimed that he would be "risking his family" if he "broke company policy" by giving me price quotes, and then he stormed out. I left a message with his manager, that was never returned. What a waste of time. He was already there, we were NOT going to buy that day. We are collecting quotes only, not making a purchase. This company policy exists only to force the hand of the homeowners with threats of one-day-only pricing.
Description of Work: I need to replace a broken window. I was at a street festival and was solicited at an Anderson windows table at the festival. I described my problem window and was told they really needed to see the problem to give a quote. I figured I'd schedule to see what they had to offer.

Dear Member, I read your review and I believe we owe you an apology. At Renewal by Andersen we strive to deliver an experience that exceeds what is typical of the home improvement industry. As you can see by looking at the other reviews below, 9 times out of 10 we “wow” our customers. However, I would like to personally apologize for the miscommunication that occurred between you and our sales representative, and for the frustration this has caused you. I see in our records that we scheduled another appointment for 6/16/2012 with just you, but that you later cancelled that appointment. Since things do not always go right the first time, I do hope you’ll give us another chance to earn your business. I also want you to know we heard your comments in the home office, and regret we did not have the chance to provide you with a better experience. Please feel free to reach out to me personally if you would like schedule another time for us to meet with just you, or if you would like to discuss these or any other issues further. Made appointment for quote and asked that my husband and I be here which I am ok with. From the first moment I knew this was going to be a HARD sell. I was right. Talk about pressure, the salesman went through the entire house to measure the windows and talked in detail about installation. This will be important later. He showdown us his product vs. A vinyl window. He had a large binder filled with Internet articles that we never really were given the opportunity to read that allegedly spoke of composite construction being superior to vinyl. Anderson suppliesna large amount of vinyl so if it so bad why do they out their name on it? He was at our home for two hours, way too long. We are in the process of getting our entire kitchen redone and he took our kitchen plans and started talking about how he had been in the kitchen business and evaluated our kitchen plans? Basically wanted $32000 for 18 windows and wanted us to commit right then and there. We made it very clear that we will not commit to that now and he continued for another 20 minutes even though we had another appointment show up at our house. Started talking about discounts if we signed then, asked when we could commit ,etc. High pressure high pressure high pressure. We basically had to kick him out. Last night I recieved a "quality assurance call" asking about the visit. I made it clear we were not happy and not willing to spend that kind of money. He ALSO persisted and then stated " we may be able to save you some money of we have a foreman come out and look at the project since Installtion is part of the quote. Are you kidding me???? You had someone here for 2 hours and now I should give up another half hour? If you can't send someone who can talk about installation then don't come. Buyer be ware. These windows are not worth it and there are other window companies that offer composite windows. They will tel you they are the only ones.

The sales rep came for the supposed "one hour" talk. Three hours later, we agreed on the contract, but he really could talk. A week later, a guy came to take the measurements of the window frames. Then another week I got a phone call explaining when they would arrive. I had to prepare the area by moving all furniture and stuff away from the windows. They came on time, laid out plastic sheeting outside and over the furniture in the house. The job went pretty smoothly and they were in and out in 5.5 hours. They cleaned up afterwards. The final payment actually was actually two thirds of the price so make sure you have enough cash in your checking account.
Description of Work: They removed eight windows and installed 8 new ones. Some of the window sills had to be reconstructed because the windows were not level. The windows were put in place and caulked all around. They also cut a simple piece of wood to put in the window to fit the air conditioners. I have definitely noticed that the draft has gone away and I hope our heating bill will decrease.

I selected Anderson based n their history and quality of windows. The at home demonstration was very complete and conducted by a representative that was well informed and experienced. The estimating process was a very weak point of the process and required entirely to much negotiating effort to get to the price point that I was wiling to pay. The first quote was over $40,000 and the final negotiated price was approximately half that price. Aside from the Companies pricing approach the window quaility is superior as was the installation team. The installation team was the best I've seen and I think they left our home cleaner then when they arrived.

They were very prompt in calling me back and everyone I dealt with was very nice, on the phone and in person. A lot of information was provided on the different types of windows & the quality of Anderson's windows; however, that did not off set the estimated cost of the windows. It was over double a previous estimate I received. While I am sure that windows are a great quality, I do not plan to live in my house for over 30 years where the investment might be worth it.

Very, very well. Came when they said they would, on time. Did the work well and professionally. The Anderson Windows they installed are top quality, with an outstanding guarantee. Any surprises that came up during installation were handled well but their pre-install work beforehand kept that to a minimum. Renewal by Anderson are top quality with a price that reflects that. I have had replacement work done in the past for less money, but it doesn't look as good, it doesn't do the same job and 7 years later I was replacing it because it fogged up between the panes and the guarantee had all ready run out. I expect that Anderson will be around for the 20 year total guarantee.

I am a woman who worked all her life until I retired 2 years ago. I built my first house before I was married. I am the person in the family responsible for home maintenance. Renewal by Anderson called promptly after my on-line inquiry. We decided on a plan for them to visit, assess my window needs and set a price. Then....we need your husband to be there. I don't care what their rationale for their company policy is. It is a sexist policy. I can buy a car. I can buy a house. I can get a credit card. I can go to the Antarctic. But these jerks won't sell me a window. Unbelievable. Did anyone bother to tell Andersen that it is the 21st century?
Description of Work: My entire house has Andersen windows. I built my house - and my former house - using Andersen. I am a 59 year old female who has built 2 houses. I have 4 faulty Anderson casement windows in my current house. I asked to have a representative come to the house to look at the windows so it could be determined whether they could be repaired or replaced. The company policy prohibits their representatives from meeting with only me. The sexist jerks will not sell me windows unless my husband sits through their song and dance. I sincerely hope their casement windows get stuck where the sun doesn't shine.

Response from Renewal by Andersen of Philadelphia
It appears our customer service person did not clearly explain why we prefer to have all homeowners present (regardless of gender). Our goal is to deliver the best customer service while also running our business sustainably. Towards this end, rather than making customers drive to us, we invest in sending a foreman to your home at no charge to you. We’ll work around your busy schedule for this visit—we make ourselves available on evenings and weekends seven days a week. While we certainly want your business, this free service is delivered with absolutely no obligation. If you don’t feel Renewal by Andersen is right for you, we will accept your no as graciously as a yes. What we do ask is that you recognize that while this service is free to you, it does cost us considerable money to send a trained expert to your property. Therefore, we ask that all homeowners are present—whether they are male or female, a spouse, a significant other or a relative. We apologize if this seems intrusive, but over the years we’ve found two things happen if all homeowners don’t discuss a project in detail with the foreman: First we end up having to return for multiple visits to do what we could have done in one visit. This wastes more of your time, because we usually have to repeat ourselves. It also increases our costs. Second, the few times our customers were dissatisfied over the years, it was often due to a misunderstanding that happened because one homeowner wasn’t present at the initial stages of the process. When only one homeowner is present during the foreman’s visit, they can’t accurately convey some aspects of the foreman’s information to the other homeowner. That’s how misunderstandings (and unhappy homeowners) occur. Two final thoughts: If there is an insurmountable reason why one homeowner can’t be present (for example, a spouse is overseas in the military), simply ask to speak to our call center manager. Second, as a division of Andersen Windows we strive to conduct our business ethically, and to deliver the best customer service in the home improvement industry. Once in a while, homeowners commenting on Angie’s List are mad at us, and assume we are lying to them or being sexist. This is far from the case. Everyone who works at our local office in King of Prussia, PA is very proud to serve customers as part of the Renewal by Andersen family. We have an office bulletin board full of very satisfied customer letters. Many of these can be found on our website, FindReplacementWindows.com. As a homeowner, if you have any concern whatsoever please talk to us so we can try to resolve it. We hope you’ll give us the opportunity to earn your business.

The work turned out excellent. They did everything they promised. It was a very good experience and I have nothing negative to say.
Description of Work: They installed a huge window in the front of my house; it’s almost the size of a wall minus a couple feet.

Everything went pretty well. Everything came out fine. I am very pleased with the way it turned out. The office staff was very clear about communicating their scheduling with us.

They did a fantastic job. The quality of the windows is wonderful. They’re easy to handle and clean. We did a lot shopping around, and we’re happy we went with this company.

The job was scheduled for March 31 but it snowed, so it was rescheduled for the next day. It was raining next morning, but they sent two crews over at 11 when it stopped, and had the whole job finished and cleaned up by 3! We were very pleased with the quality of the windows and the work, the crew was professional and quick! The only drawback was the price, but we had already made up our mind that these windows would be worth it. Its already made a huge difference in the draftiness. We plan to put more windows in once we get these paid off, and will definitely bring Renewal back.
Description of Work: We had two old large 4 pane casement bays replaced with 3 pane bays and one tall two pane casement replaced with same.

He was okay. I probably wouldn?t hire him again. He was overpriced and they showed up late. They gave a good warranty.
