Jeffrey, the service representative, spent considerable time checking the entire heating system and cleaning components where necessary. He then reviewed his findings and let me know that one part should be replaced but this part may be covered under the system warranty. He made extensive electronic notes and the general manager gave me a call back shortly after Jeffrey left to say that the part is in fact covered under warranty and this has been ordered and will be installed as soon as it comes in. My wife and I have had an excellent experience with R&D including the initial installation.

Everything was well done and very professional.
Description of Work: Have used R&D for years. They are competitively priced, not the best, but I am willing to pay a little more for the dependability and quality. I get a twice yearly service and cannot recommend it enough. They catch those things that will leave you without air conditioning before it breaks. Well worth it.

Good communication; no complaints by tenants, work has held up and as I recall, the price was fair, it was over two years ago. Their follow-up communication is very active. I will hire them again, have already spoken to someone about a scheduling furnace winter PM in October.

Horrendous, we were cheated, lied to, and I'm sure they will rebuff my review like they do all their bad review. A dis-credit to a good industry.
Description of Work: My dealings with r & d HVAC are sadly stunning and true. My phone and bank records with verify what I'm typing. I've not see a more shyster laden company than these folks. OK, so we bought a house this summer and moved in. I had a question about the thermostat and wanted to be loyal to the one who put in this unit and serviced the previous home owner. I was directed to chris cavanaugh the "Director" of operations. A service call was set up to check on the cooling part of our heat pump. The service tech, timothy frank came out and proceeded to bond with me like we were twin brothers. The "set-up" was underway. He tells me that we had mold spores and a bunch of other air quality problems. He informs me that he can cure all these issues with a Remey-Halo UV Light. So, I was trusting and he installs the unit at a quoted price of $ 1,200.00. After he leaves I jump on my computer and see them selling anywhere from $ 495.00 to $ 795.00. I was hood-winked into paying FULL MSRP ! The "fix" was now in full gear. I call cavanaugh and he tells me that he can lower the cost by providing me with "free" service this year and all of 2017. Little did I know that this is how they perform a standard "bait-n-switch on new customers at r & d HVAC. I was being put out to dry for trusting these thieves! Fall kicked in with cooler weather and I set up one of my "free" service calls, for being over-charged in the first place. The same "my twin" service tech, timothy frank came out and proceeded to act like I poisoned his cat and dog. Scowling the entire time, answering our questions in sharp, terse one or two word answers, just enough of a F-U as to not be accused of being rude to us. His actions made my wife quite upset. I'm sure r & d HVAC trains all his dirty tricks from over charging us to acting like we harmed his Family. We can tell no difference whatsoever in air quality. Then it hits me! He gets a commission by over-charging for these supposed extra needs, and thus when we caught this dirty deal, his commission was smaller, leading to his rude and put-offish behavior to us. Oh, by the way, I had to pay him $ 160.00 for this "free" service call. So here's the part that has me writing a review on every site I can find so others won't get cheated like we did. I make a phone call to cavanaugh in late October after my "free" service call. No return call. I call again in early November, no return call. I call again in mid-November, no call back. I call late November, no call back. I call early December, no call back. Now I know for sure that the fix and cheat was really laid on me big time, and I wonder if the owner, knows about or condones these scams by his employees. I make three (3) calls to owner marty drumhiller, none of which are returned. After these past two weeks, I've spoken to numerous area HVAC companies, I find out that this type of over-charging, promises without paper, never talking to a customer once exposed is in a un-written mission statement by r & d HVAC. They have all of these sweet & fluffy reviews by one's not done wrong like some of us. All I can say in closing is if you want to avoid financial and emotional headaches, STAY AWAY FROM r & d HVAC !

I called them when heater was not working. Technician(Brandon) found that there is bird nest in the vent and he cut it open without asking me. Later he told me the bird got stuck in the motor and we have replace it. When I was feeling bad for the bird, he was smiling(not sure if he telling the true or lying). He left all the things opened and said they can fix it and will cost $1400. Just for the visit, the charged me 100(discharge fee) + 100(cutting the tube and checking) and 100( overcharge which he will return after fixing the motor). I got suspicious and called up second company and got a quote for way less than half they are charging. The Second company technician who visited was surprise to see why the tube was cut or why everything is left open. Totally unprofessional. He did not find any traces of Birds. The second company fixed my issue additionally I have pay 100 for fixing the pipe Brandon cut. I called R & D to cancel the service and asked to return my $100 they Pre-charged for the second visit. They(Ann) stopped responding to my phones. Beware of this company, they reminds me of Wellsfargo overcharge customers to reach year end goals. They try to rip you off.

Tim came out to diagnose my parent?s air conditioner that had been on the blink for 24hrs and the house was getting hot! Within minutes he found the problem and showed it to me. The capacitor and switch were badly corroded and burnt out. Within 30 minutes he had everything working again and even went the extra mile to clean the outside unit and instruct my parents in how to use their thermostat which at 80 plus years they had forgotten. Tim was very personable and took the time to make sure we understood everything. These guys are exceptional in the service they provide!

I switched to R&D this year for my annual maintenance for my Generac whole house generator. The company that had installed it was charging substantially more than R&D for the annual maintenance contract. So I shopped around and found R&D on Angies List. So far, so good. They came and did the maintenance without any issues.

It was turn key effort, from start to finish. I knew that I needed a generator, but not what kind or how big. They came out, evaluated the house and explained everything, giving me options with estimates on each one. We ran into some issues because I had been told that the house was already set up (I just bought the house) for a generator and both Chris and Chuck were great about explaining and showing me how the other guys were in error--the house was set up for a plug in generator with a manual switch and I wanted an automatic. They offered solutions, I chose the best one, and they installed it. Installation went great. I liked the guys that stopped out and Chris was there every step of the way making sure everything went smooth and I was satisfied. They were good people and treated me, my family and my home well. At the end, the electrician, Chuck, even left the old switch, explaining it was still in great shape and could be sold on eBay for a nice price.

they gave a wonderful sales pitch. I asked, how much do you charge for service maintenance fee annually During the initial sales consultation The guy said $129 with a new filter replaced it will be $ 179.00, less than $200. They installed new heater and the heater maintanence charge on a new gas heater they charged $369. they didn't even need to do anything it's gas so there is no build up. the $369 was the last $369 they were going to get. We found another qualified heater man.

Actually they weren't able to do anything. I was getting a new system put in and they had put it in wrong. They had told me that the right people to get in contact with and the guy had to go back and get the things to put it in right. They didn't do any work but they did point me in the right direction to make sure the work got done correctly. The system was frozen over and they told me to turn the air condition system off and let it defrost. They also told me to get an inspection to make sure the system was put in right.

I love R&D. They are there when you need them. I have been using them for years for preventative maintenance and they are there on time, bring everything they need, and do not try to sell you on something you do not need. My system had leaked all the freon earlier in the season and they were there the same day, even though their schedule was packed with all the calls from the high temps. About a month later, we had another problem and they came out and fixed it free of charge because they should have caught it on the previous visit. I cannot say enough good things about them. It is a tremendous peace of mind to know that all I have to do is call and, because I am an ongoing customer, they make time in their schedule to get there fast. Can't ask for more!

While it seemed like a good deal to save approximaley a hundred dollars on the basic annual service, and generally the adminstrative staff and the (young) technician conducted themsleves professionally, the actual quality of the service was very poor. Afterwards, the furnance stopped working and upon inpecting it I noticed an unusual amount of black soot all over from the furnance. For the required emergency service call, I ended up having to use my normal oil company serive provider, and the (older) technician actually showed me that the boiler was not properly cleaned out of nor the nozzles set properly for the burner unit type. Hard lesson learned to save a hundred dollars.

Ms. [removed member name], Thank you for your review! Although we wish the review were more positive, it is feedback like this that enables us to become better and for that we are grateful you took the time to provide us with this information. I would like to say that quality is something that should not suffer, regardless of price, and if we did not exceed your expectations than we have failed you as a client. When you noticed an issue with your heater after our service I wish you would had contacted us so that we could correct anything that may have been wrong. We do guarantee all of our work and if we are at fault we will make it right. Our 4 Star maintenance does include a full cleaning to include the nozzles as opposed to a basic maintenance and inspection, unfortunately that plan was not part of the Angie's List offers. I would be very appreciative if you were to provide us the opportunity to gain your trust by extending the 4 Star Annual Maintenance service to you for free this year. Please contact me if I can help in any way. Sincerely, Chris Cavanaugh

I purchased a Bryant Evolution system from R&D in November 2011, and posted a positive review about that experience on January 19, 2012. Following that review, and during the first cooling season, it was determined that an airflow related adjustment was required (no charge). Otherwise, the period since then was pleasantly uneventful. Until this year, that is, when the system required attention. This review is of my more recent experience with the company. In January, the severe cold caused my condensate drain line to freeze. Which subsequently caused my furnace to stop functioning. I think I called R&D around noon and they had a tech at my home by evening. Which I considered to be an impressive response given the weather conditions and demands on their time. The tech installed a temporary work-around which made the furnace functional, and came back after the line had thawed to restore the system to its normal configuration. Shortly after that episode, an obscure intermittent problem materialized. The symptoms and conditions which surrounded it made it more difficult to diagnose. It would be difficult to explain the situation without a lengthy technical description, so I'll simply proceed to the important part: R&D worked through the problem over several visits, successfully resolved the problem, and given the context I think that was good work. Lastly, we wanted to address the problem of condensate line freezing. The work proposed was straight-forward, but in my case this involved approvals from several other parties. Which created additional work, and ended up causing delays and rescheduling. However, these were taken in stride and I'm pleased to report that the work in question was recently completed to my satisfaction. By, I might add, a tech who offered to walk some distance to my home after we learned that paving work would block vehicle access on that day. Some of the work described above involved no charges to me. The bills I have received were very reasonable. The furnace proper required no repairs, and currently everything seems to be working well. I liked the technical guys (Marty, Bob, Scott) and found them to be knowledgeable and productive. Ann Bush, the GM, was my primary contact throughout the process. I thought she did a remarkable job handling things on their end and she was pleasant to work with. Although it was a year during which my system had problems, I actually feel better about R&D than I did before. For I've now seen that they promptly respond to emergency calls, are able to work through complicated problems, and stand by their work.

It took R&D two months to fix my heat pump and much of the delay was the fault of their General Manager (GM), Ann Bush. November, 2013, I called and explained my problem and a tech came out 12/3/2013 and for $99, I was told that I needed a new filter. After the New Year, I realized my heat was constantly on and the heat pump fan was not operational. The backup coils were providing the heat. I called again and set up and appointment. I also bought a Preventative Maintenance Plan for $160 and took the check to their office (not at lunchtime as requested). At that time, I was told by the GM, Ann, that the problem was with my thermostat and that she would refund my $99. A different tech came, replaced the thermostat for $195 and the next day, the aux heat was back on (temps in the 50’s outside.) I called back and was told Ann would have to talk to me. I left a message and did not get a call back. Ann emailed me the next day that the woman I spoke with was not in the day before. What? After I told her that I did call and leave a message, Ann said she was on a “long distance call” and could not call me back. Ann “diagnosed” it again telling me that the return was too close to the thermostat. That did not make any sense. Nor did it make sense that she was attempting to diagnose the problem when she was not trained to do so. Two technicians came and found that there was a problem with the sensor board. Finally – a diagnosis from a trained professional!! My old thermostat was replaced and later, Ann left a voice mail message that she put my check for $195 in the mail, that she would order the parts the next day, and call me early the next week. She also said that rather than refunding my $99, she would put that towards the labor of installing the sensor board. No check appeared and no call. I had to follow up again on the check and it had not been put in the mail when she said and then she asked if I wanted them to install the parts! Several emails (and days) later, I had my appointment. Meanwhile, my electric bills have been obscene due to the electric coils running almost nonstop (only turning off when I manually turned the heat off.) My frustration at her incompetence had me forwarding Ann's emails to the owner, Marty Drumheller, for him to see the lack of professionalism. I have yet to receive a reply from Mr. Drumheller. [As of a later date, I did receive a reply. He terminated us as customers.] I finally got my system fixed [but only for five days then it stopped working again] and the technican, Bobby, was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The technicians are great, but Ann and Marty make selecting R&D Heating & Cooling a big drawback. When our Preventative Maintenance Plan is up, we will be switching to another company. [We don't have that option as the owner terminated our contract but refuses to refund the $160 for the plan even though Ann said the contract was through January 2015.] Addendum: I went through Angieslist.com's Complaint Resolution Process with the owner refusing to reimburse me the funds as the GM had promised. It is listed as "stalemate", however, I lost the money I was promised to be refunded by R&D Heating & Cooling, my system is still broken, and my electric bills are obscene since we have to run off the auxiliary coils. That, to me, is not a stalemate. I changed my overall rating from a "C" to an "F".

Response from R&D Heating, Cooling & Electric
In response to Mrs. Kristi Moore’s review we would like to provide the sequence of events based upon our documentation and technical analysis of her heat pump system: 2007 – Lennox system installed by R&D Heating and Cooling March 5, 2009 – The client contacted us regarding an issue with the unit which after inspection the technician received a locked out status code (3) yellow (short cycling) which after further diagnostic testing was determined to be a defective Lennox control board. A new control board was ordered through Lennox an installed under warranty at no cost on 3-16-2009. All of the mechanical reading of the clients unit were documented and supplied to Lennox Technical Support for historical documentation. At the time of the service the client was advised that the air filters needed to be changed because they had not been changed since the unit was installed in 2007. Upon installation of the system, the accompanying documentation does specify that the unit’s air filter should be checked and or replaced monthly to ensure proper operation. Subsequent the installation of the new control board the client ordered (2) Merv 10 16x25x5 replacement filters to be installed by the client. January 28, 2011 – The client contacted our office to schedule a service call for their heating unit which was not operating properly. Upon inspection of the unit the technician received a locked out status code (3) yellow (short cycling). The technician reset the lockout and checked the operation of the unit which was determined to be good and operating within the unit’s normal range. The cause of the issue was identified to be ice buildup on one of the unit’s outdoor sensors. After resolving the issue the technician observed the unit for a period of 25 minutes to further ensure the unit was fully operational. Due to the client not being enrolled in our preventive maintenance program the client was billed for an evaluation fee of $99.00. December 3, 2013 - The client contacted our office to schedule a service call for their heating unit which was not working properly. Upon inspection of the unit the technician found the unit in a locked out status code (3) yellow (short cycling). After inspection the technician reset the unit and verified proper operation. Further diagnosis revealed the unit was running high head pressure due to a blocked air filter which was cleaned by the technician. The client was advised that the air filter needed to be replaced and the technician offered to replace the air filter to which the client declined during the service call. The technician supplied the client with the proper Merv air filter sizing for future reference and the client indicated he would follow-up with our office with regards to ordering an air filter. The client was not enrolled in our preventive maintenance program and therefore was billed $99.00 for a service call. January 6, 2014 – The client came to our office and enrolled in our Basic Preventive Maintenance Plan for a Heat Pump unit. The client was charged $160.00 for enrollment in Basic Preventive Maintenance Program which was later refunded. January 10, 2014 – A technician was deployed to the client’s home for a preventive maintenance service at which time the technician conducted the following; (1) checked the air filter, (2) cleaned the unit’s blower motor, and (3) replaced the thermostat and verified proper operation. The client was provided a bill for the new Honeywell Pro 5000 thermostat in the amount of $195.00 which was voided and not charged. January 13, 2014 – The client contacted our office to report the system was not working properly. A technician was sent to the clients home and upon inspection of the unit the technician discovered that the defrost board was defective. A replacement was ordered from Lennox which was received and installed on January 29, 2014 along with a new sensor harness. The client was not charged for any parts or labor. The technician advised the client that if the problem persist that Lennox would have to become involved due to the number of failures with the same component. In each service request in which R&D Heating and Cooling serviced the clients unit it was left in working condition and determined to be operating within the systems normal operating range. All issues that were caused by a component failure were fixed without cost to the client. As with all mechanical devices, whether that is an automobile or appliances within our homes, continual maintenance is required and specified by the manufacturer. In this case the clients unit was not being maintained properly with routine replacement of the unit’s air filter which caused undue stress on the system and a degradation of performance as air flow was progressively blocked by debris. The client was offered a preventive maintenance program during each visit to alleviate having to keep up with the maintenance of the unit on their own to which they declined until most recently. R&D Heating and Cooling strives to maintain 100% customer satisfaction and to always be an advocate for the client, if we make a mistake we will make it right at our expense. In this instance the client’s failure to maintain the unit properly resulted in an initial service to evaluate and repair the unit which resulted in a $99.00 charge. Subsequent visits were the result of not following the routine maintenance of the unit coupled with faulty equipment from the manufacturer which is of no fault of R&D Heating and Cooling as we are not the manufacturer. All service visits and associated parts and labor as a result of the component failures were completed at no charge to the client by R&D Heating and Cooling. We at R&D Heating and Cooling have done everything possible to error on the side of the client, in the six (6) service calls to the client’s home they were billed once (1) for a service call which due to improper system maintenance. We have extended a refund offer to Mrs. Moore for all of the costs incurred by R&D Heating and cooling in addition to offering to pay her service call expense for calling another service company.
