Went well except for the Grand Finale.
Description of Work: I had a major leak in a drain in the back of the house that ran underground from one side of the room all the way out to the yard drain, (about 10 feet.) I had several estimates for repair. Wexler Co. came in the highest, but I hired them because they were willing to wait to be paid at the time I recovered money for the damages. I did not have the money to put up front at the time and the problem couldn't wait. on the positive side, I will say that they seemed to do a good job and that the workers were courteous, clean, neat and professional. The price I was given at the beginning of the job was $6500. I was told by the foreman that it was possible that only a section of the drain might need to be replaced, they wouldn't know until they opened up the floor and took a look at what was going on. As it turned out, only an approximately 4x4 section of the floor had to be dug up, and a few feet of the drain had to be replaced, the workers showed it to me. The job at the beginning was estimated to take 5+ days. The actual job took 3 days and 6 hours.. The last half of the third day consisted of fixing an unrelated problem in the basement which originally the foreman told me he would throw in for free. On the 4th day, there were two men cleaning up for 6 hours, I have their time in and out sheet. So everything was going well and it was a smaller job than was originally anticipated--less time, less mess, less money?? Right? Wrong!!! Not less Money! Now in all fairness, Wexler Co. waited, which they agreed to do, patiently, for 4 months to get paid and that is worth money right there. When I was ready to pay and asked if there would be an adjustment in price given the circumstances, I was told yes. The adjustment? A whopping $200.00 and yes you heard right. They wouldn't back down. I was informed by the foreman that the reason for this was that his men put in 48 hours and they replaced 10 feet of drain. Hmmm. Now if you do the math, 48 hours minus the 6 hours of cleanup on the 4th day, equals 42 hrs. 42 hrs divided by 3 (days) equals 14 hrs. Now either I or my roomate were present for the entire job. Do you know anyone who works 14 hrs a day? I don't! It was more like 8 hrs a day, maybe one day they were there 9 or 10 hrs.--don't remember. But if they were working in the house through my breakfast, lunch, dinner, (and late night snack) I think I would have remembered LOL!! Again, the math is that even if they worked 10 hrs. a day which they most assuredly did not, the total hours would be 36, not 48. When I asked about a price reduction regarding using less materials, I was informed by the foreman that the workers installed 10' of drain pipe, however in actuality is was a few feet of pipe, I saw it with my own eyes. the workers showed it to me. Sooooo, what can I say. Seemed like Wexler Co. was intent on getting the same money that they originally contracted for, no matter what the situation.
