Dear [member name remove], Thank you for your input and review. We want you to know that we value you as a previous customer and care about your feedback. Honest, Polite, Professional, Efficient, Meticulous and Excellent Workmanship are how our customers commonly describe us and our work. (See reviews above and below this comment) This is the first time we have been described as dishonest and inept so I would like to take a moment to address your serious concerns and accusations. First, let the record below show that Comfort Basement has done everything to try to accommodate [remove member name], but unfortunately, every so often we encounter a customer or two who we are unable to please. Comfort Basement will continue to try and accommodate [remove member name] and address any legitimate concerns pertaining to waterproofing; please note that her waterproofing system has been installed over 3 months ago and since then she has enjoyed a dry basement. Also we hope that our previous reviews will continue to reflect the true values and honest business practices that Comfort Basement is known for in the Angies list community. Why no Invisible Parts: One of the things that sets us apart from most of the other companies is that we train our inspectors to properly demonstrate to a homeowner how a French Drain works, how it is installed as well as to show-and-tell all of the parts and components that will be used in the system installation so that there is no confusion about what the final product will look like in the end. We do this by sharing pictures of previous installs as well as showing the homeowner the actual parts of the system during the inspection. We have gotten lots of great reviews just on our ability to property and thoroughly explain to a homeowner, in laymen’s terms, how the system works and what it looks like, there are no secrets to our system, we are always very upfront and honest about what we offer as well as how much it will cost. Also, during the inspection with the homeowner we answer all of their questions and concerns simply because we, as a contractor, want to be absolutely sure the homeowner knows and clearly understands exactly what they are getting before they proceed with the work. We also direct them to our website to view the system for themselves and never pressure a homeowner to make decisions that same night because we would rather that the homeowner has had plenty of time to be absolutely sure they prefer Comfort Basement and the system options we offer. After our inspections, homeowners fully understand that all waterproofing systems have several things in common. They all have VISIBLE parts, they all have MOVING parts as well, e.g. the float of a sump pump is a moving part. They all create a SOUND; none are completely silent, especially if parts are mechanical. And every waterproofing company offers a system or systems that will slightly affect the previous aesthetics of a basement, but this, of course, is a compromise that most homeowners who call upon us are willing to accept in exchange for a dry basement. I have had homeowners who have said I would rather temporarily loose some drywall then to spend another night shop vacuuming and pumping water out of my basement during a storm. Most homeowners will agree. The loss of drywall and the inconvenience of having the work done is a small price to pay for a dry basement and life-time guarantee. In regards to the black band you spoke about, the black band is called Mira Drain, it is a high density plastic with built-in water channels and it is latest technology in waterproofing and happens to be a crucial component of our waterproofing system, without it your basement will continue to leak. I guarantee, an invisible system that works just does not exist, if it did I would have known about it and I would be using it today. Mira Drain not only directs water infiltration from the foundation walls into the system underneath the floor slab as opposed to letting water overflow onto the basement floor above but it also acts as a vapor barrier and helps with moisture. Mira Drain comes in two colors black and grey; we use black because since we install it on the perimeter of the basement floor we have found that the lighter colors tend to look dirty in time whereas the black Mira Drain continues to look clean even after our yearly re-inspection. I made the decision to use the black Mira Drain because it is in improvement in that addresses the issue of aesthetics. More on Aesthetics: Comfort Basement is dedicated to maintaining as much as the aesthetics of our clients basements as possible; However, we will not sacrifice the Effectiveness, Durability, Longevity and Capacity of our Water Management Systems for the sake of aesthetics. That is not to say that system we offer cannot be installed in a way to make the final product look as Clean, Neat, and Uniformed as possible. I recently had the pleasure of working with a fabulous electrician who did some work for me on a property I own in Philadelphia. It is an older home that had a lot of electrical issues, well, unfortunately in order to correct the multitude of electrical issues there was a tremendous amount of drywall loss that I had to incur. The electrician had to run new wiring for each room throughout a three story property to the basement where the electrical panel was. The electrician cut perfect squares on center of each stud to make it easy for the dry wall installer to make the drywall repairs; thus saving me money. And all of his wiring was straight, uniform and so neat so that the code inspector would have no problem seeing where his work began and ended and the passing inspection was a guarantee. In addition, he repaired all of my electrical issues at a fair price. But I could not say that I considered his work Beautiful or Aesthetically pleasing, a new kitchen is Beautiful, this was something else. The fact is that, the final products of electrical, plumbing and waterproofing projects are hardly ever considered aesthetically pleasing but customers see BEAUTY in the fact that IT WORKS…and problems are solved. Although I have gotten many reviews throughout the years where customers have said “beautiful work” my most recent was an elderly woman in Collingswood, NJ, I know what they really mean is I’m happy with your work. Most homeowners fully understand that the main function of a waterproofing system is to keep the basement dry and aesthetics are achieved when the basement is properly refinished. Addressing Accusations of No Shows and Promptness: Comfort Basement is a family owned business and operates Monday through Friday. We always make it point to inform homeowners of our days of operation. This is why we usually prefer to start a project on a Monday because it does take us anywhere between 3 and 6 days to complete an installation. So according to your review we actually finished on schedule. The reason we ask homeowners to allow us that time frame is because waterproofing is not one day job and should not be rushed. Set up and containment alone can sometimes take a day, if you recall correctly, it took us a day to set up and contain your home, not an hour. Demolition takes a day, and depending on the size of the project sometimes two days, installation of components of the system another day and masonry yet another day and, depending on the size of the job, an additional day for clean-up may be needed, which, again, if you recall, you were very happy with our clean up at the end the end of the job. Your basement was considered a small job in comparison to most of our usual projects; however, the delays you mentioned that occurred during the work week were because you denied our crew access to the property because you were not going to be home and you did not want to leave us in your home if you could not be there. Despite the fact that we had already communicated that we would not be working on the weekend you called and demanded that someone show up anyway. We made an exception to accommodate your request and was able to formulate a crew for you on that Saturday, although late, you were pleased that you were able to get us in on a day that was outside of our hours of operation. Again you requested that we work Sunday and you were upset, if not irate, that we could not accommodate your request and formulate a crew. Addressing Dry-Wall Cuts One of the things we discuss with our clients about waterproofing is that the main purpose of having a French Drain Installed is to fix a serious water infiltration problem. In order to have a dry basement a Perimeter French Drain System must be properly installed which unfortunately involves having to remove anywhere between 1-3’ of drywall and/or paneling, base-moldings, flooring materials that may be in the way of where the system needs to be installed. This is one of the unfortunate inconveniences that are common in any effective waterproofing system installation. I have been in the basement waterproofing business for many years and I have yet found any competitor that can successfully stop a serious waterproofing problem without having to remove building materials that are in the way of leaky foundation walls. Most of the time, if a homeowner is getting this work done, these building materials are already infested with Mold and need to be removed anyway, and I rarely encounter a homeowner who is opposed to me removing Mold Infested building materials while installing our system especially if I am not charging them for it. If you recall, we showed you the mold infested material in your basement and we believed, and still believe, that is was in your best interest that we removed the materials that had water damage. Nothing can be destroyed if it already damaged. I have and will always continue to instruct my crews to remove any and all mold infested materials that they encounter during an installation. If you recall we took a great deal of precaution while doing this removal process for you. We properly erected our containment to prevent dust movement to the upstairs as wells as protected your floors, we utilized a negative air machine with a HEPA FILTER and ducted it to the exterior which we took pictures of. When your drywall was cut we used a straight edge to make sure the cuts were straight to make the drywall repair easier and save you money on the drywall repair. Pertaining to the follow-up inspection we have a signed work order from when we showed up and it also shows that we gave you replacement moldings Pertaining to the noxious sewer smell, our system has nothing to do with sewer lines; however, we did send a service technician to look at your sewer line problem and you had confessed to him that you recently had a sewer line repair. One of the common things that occur after replacing a portion of your sewer pipe is that when a plumber cuts the pipe the liquid can seep into the ground and the smell can stay for a while, the smell will not linger permanently but the smell can get stronger after a rain and that was when you called about it. I would be more than willing to look at that if the smell persists but you might want to call your plumber and ask how much liquid fell on the floor. Punch line? • You had asked for a full refund which I believe is very unreasonable, we repaired your basement by installing a waterproofing system that works and is still working, if it was a system that failed then a full refund would be more than reasonable. • You then demanded a partial refund because you did not like the color of the Black Band (Mira Drain), again, it is the better choice of colors and most importantly it works. • You had asked us to replace the moldings that were cut because of either mold infestation and/or in the way of the perimeter drain, we rendered new moldings to you on a previous delivery and you signed for it. • You had asked Comfort Basement for a quote on an epoxy Floor Seal, but at this point I think it would be wise for both you and Comfort Basement if we no longer pursued a business relationship. • Can we work on Sunday? We explained that our hours of operations are Monday through Friday. However, we accommodated you on Saturday outside our normal hours of operation and explained we could return on Monday.
