Best Carpentry

Ian's versatile, able and professional. He stands by his work. His creative approach to our Bilco doors saved us money compared to other proposed solutions and when there was a problem with the custom door he built, he came out and fixed it, made it right. Highly recommended and will use him again.

Good....Better....Best! This company is aptly named. Not only was everything the "best" at the end of the work, but Ian made sure that during the project, he was doing the "best" to satisfy the customer's expectations. "Best" of all was even before the project. Ian listened to our plans and made sure that he understood what we wanted, rather than tell us what he wanted to do. He advised us throughout the project. Simply put.....he was "The Best."

Took 2 days. Initially I was going to have the stairs going in an opposite direction but Ian pointed out a major fall risk and went the other way...which looks a lot better...no other contractor had appointed that out during the consultation. Service was and exceeded my expectations.....an overall I think the price was very fair the quality workmanship...would definitely hire again. Ian is very laid back and wants to keep his customers happy!

Had a little hiccup at first coordinating the start of the work, then the experience went very well. Replacement railing and spindles were very professionally done and extremely solid - much better looking and much more secure than what was there before. Repainted all of the steps even though he replaced just one. Very friendly and has what I call great tradesman etiquette - the area he worked on was cleaner than it was before he started work.

It had been a rainy spring, but the date we set was not rainy; on the other hand, it was the start of a heat wave and horribly hot, close to 100o. That didn’t stop Ian, however. He was on the job, and throughout the heat wave he worked as hard as ever. Ian had hired a team of painters, but after the first few days he found himself obliged to fire two of them for laziness and sloppiness, which meant he ultimately finished the job himself with just one assistant. It took him two or three days longer than he’d originally estimated, but when he was done and had us walk with him around the house and outbuildings to make sure every detail had been attended to, the job was perfect and the place was beautiful. As usual, Ian cleaned up everything after him, and even cleaned up a few messes we ourselves had made.

Company never followed through on providing quotes

One part of my floor was lower then the other, he pulled the carpet up, and leveled it, and out carpet back down.

Ian Fowle was very responsive to our request for a quote. The quote was very reasonable. He explained exactly what kind of materials to be used and how the job was to be completed. The deck (about 11 x 12) was finished to our satisfaction. He was extremely polite and very professional. He is an excellent carpenter. I intend to recommend him to friends who might need his services. We certainly will not hesitate to contact him for any carpentry work in the future.

Went well. Ian was very responsive and was always easy to reach. He cleaned the work area before and after completion. Ian was able to save the sound area of the porch railing, replacing only the deteriorated wood. He minimized the job instead of expanding it as many contractors would.

Ian did a wonderful job repairing our upstairs bannister. We thought we needed the whole thing replaced, but he was able to suggest a much less involved (and less expensive) repair idea. He added an additional piece that stabilized the whole structure, stained it beautifully to match. He did the job faster than he predicted, for exactly the agreed upon quote (which was very reasonable) despite doing a few unanticipated repairs here and there. He touched up the very scuffed paint in a few places which was much appreciated - again, didn't charge us any extra! He and his helper were professional, courteous, kind to our cat, and cleaned up the workspace. It was obvious from hearing him discuss the job with his assistant that he has a deep understanding of carpentry as well as the idiosyncrasies of older houses. Scheduling was a little tricky since he is a solo practitioner and there was some date confusion as well as one day he had to reschedule (he called and gave us notice, and we rescheduled easily), but he was flexible with scheduling, did return his calls, and the scheduling inconvenience was VERY mild compared with the excellent work he did, I would happily hire him again.

Ian is a great contractor, whom I highly recommend. I received bids on the job and Best Carpentry's was competitive. I had basement walls which were very out of plumb and I needed a very good, experienced contractor to straighten the job out and get it back on track. Ian and his assistant, Reese, came to work each day on time and as scheduled. They worked very fast, while not compromising workmanship. Ian took a lot of pride in this job and it showed with the finished product coming out great--ie: there were no surprises in the end, which is not the case with some other contractors. It felt as though Ian treated this job with the same pride as if this were his own house. He added value to the job by sharing his expertise on proceeding with the project. This included advising on not doing some items that would cost more without value being added and adding small amounts in one or two other areas, which would add much more value and better returns. Ian also recommended a good electrician, which worked out very well. I will definitely be calling Ian and Best Carpentry for more work in the future. Great Job!

Ian was fantastic. He was very responsive and wonderful to work with. He helped make great suggestions and did some other small additional tasks without charging more than the original estimate. I would definitely hire him again!!

Ian is prompt, professional, and easy to work with. The work turned out exactly as we envisioned. He and his assistant worked neatly and cleaned up at the end of each day. The work was beautifully done and took less time than originally anticipated.

) - fine-although he did hit the water purification system when putting 3x4's in the basement- there was kind of a10ftx10ft flood ,,,ian came out after I was adamant and helped me clean it up.he is a very nice man and I would recommend him !!!!

Ian was professional and skilled and worked quickly and quietly. He did exactly what I had requested, and tested the alarm system before he left to make sure it was engaged on the new door. I will be contacting him in the future for additional projects.

The job was harder than Ian had anticipated. The old flooring was very difficult to remove. Ian and his helper stuck at it on a hot day and completed the job on time.

I called Ian when we discovered that the plywood floor to our sunroom had sustained extensive water damage and was rotting and bug infested. Ian was one of the few contractors I contacted who said they could do the work. He came over to the house, inspected the floor, and then examined the outside to determine the likely cause of the water damage. After checking everything out, he told me what he thought was happening with the water damage, and what it would take to fix the room and prevent further damage. He took a few days to work up an estimate and dropped it off at the house. The estimate was more than reasonable, and far less than what we had anticipated for the fix. We awarded Ian the job and set up a time for him to start the repairs. Ian actually came over ahead of schedule (he lives in the same town) due to a cancellation, and was able to start work a few days early, which was great! He cut open the floor, removed the rotted and water damaged sections, and assessed what needed to be done from there. After allowing the wet subfloor beams to dry, he came back about a week later and finished the job by adding new plywood flooring and sealing the entire outer section of the sunroom where water was getting in (he actually caulked the entire perimeter of the room, just to be on the safe side!). He also corrected some mistakes of the original construction (adding a proper vapor barrier) before placing the new floor. I was thrilled with Ian's work. He was friendly, courteous, and very professional (as was his assistant). He was thorough with his examination of the problem and knowledgable about the necessary fix. His price was more than reasonable, and we fully expected to pay far more than what he charged. We really couldn't be happier with Best Carpentry and have already asked Ian to give us an estimate on another carpentry job for the house. Thanks Ian!

Hired another contractor that came out the same day as Ian and provided an estimate within a week.

It went well. We are very happy with this and a previous set of needed jobs carried out by Ian Fowle.

Arrived on time, pleasant personality, floor looks great, cleanup was very thorough and in my opinion, the price was fair. We purchased floor and trim (we requested this since we had a gift card) and Ian provided everything else. We will be using him again and referring him to others.

Ian showed up on time and I explained the job for him which consists of adjusting 8 interior doors and other small work around the house, he was fast, he did not waste anytime and went right to work, all doors close properly now, the entire job took him 3 hours, we also agreed to arrange for him to come back in two weeks to do some more work around the house, he gave me a list of items to buy before next time.all went well

Ian was professional while completing the project to our satisfaction. He enjoys finished carpentry and it shows in his efficiency and workmanship. He cares about the expectations of a client and meeting those expectations.

He was prompt in returning our phone calls. He showed up when he said he was going to for the estimate and it was right on the money. He did the work that he said he was going to and it was done on time and it was neat.
