New flooring in entryway of home
Description of Work: Ian provided a comprehensive quote, picked up the flooring, installed it, and cleaned up without hassle on my end. We had a very positive experience with Best Carpentry - from the initial quote to the completion of the project, I knew I was dealing with a professional. Also got some door frames replaced. Specifically, the work looked good, and it was simple to deal with Ian and Best Carpentry. Totally satisfied.

Description of Work: Ian completed an estimate on our flooring job that was very reasonable. Ian was extremely knowledgeable and courteous and gave great advice. We decided to go with another company only due to a special discount for which we qualified, but I will use Ian fr any flooring jobs in the future and would recommend his company to friends.

Ian and his assistant were friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and helpful. We discussed our needs, and they went and suggested a few additional items that we would want (like gates) that we love having. The cost for everything was very reasonable, and the work was done well and quickly. They really went the extra mile to make sure our needs were met and we were happy!

We hired Best Carpentry and my wife loves the result: things look great! Ian could not be more personable and caring: he made every effort to meet our expectations and beyond. We felt very comfortable having him in our home and he completed the work in the least disruptive way. His helper was very attentive and a good worker. They were both on time or advised us in advanced if they could not. He installed ceramic tiles in the kitchen and dining room, he replaced our old sliding door with a french door and he painted the walls and ceiling. He also built a separation wall with a door in our finished basement. We strongly recommend Best Carpentry.

I called Ian to give me a quote on installing a few new doors. He came out exactly when he said he would and seemed to do a thorough assessment, but in 10 days, he never followed up with a quote, e-mail or phone call.

I was unfortunately away from the country due to a family emergency and unable to reach out to any clients during that time period. Almost all of my customers were very understanding of my situation and agreed to have the work done upon my return. I did apologize for my absence.

We have an outbuilding on our property, originally a chicken coop that was transformed about ten years ago into a photo studio. It suffered bad damage from Hurricanes Irene and Lee in 2011. Since we had no use for it as a photo studio anymore, we decided to convert it into a guest cottage/office. A neighbor who began the repairs had to give up for health reasons. We called on Ian, who had done a number of jobs for us over the course of several years. It took him only a day or two to finish the cottage, which he did with his usual quiet efficiency, after which he made a number of repairs in and around the main house (fixing and cleaning out the roof gutters), and even to the property outside, replacing rotten pickets and even installing several hundred feet of split rail fence. A few weeks later, Ian dug us a several-hundred-foot trench from the outbuilding to the main house for the installation of phone/internet wires. In the early fall we had had our furnace checked, as we do every year, and were told that there was a squirrel's nest in the chimney flu, and while the furnace was fine, we risked carbon monoxide poisoning if we turned it on until the nest was removed. The furnace guy gave us the name of a company that did that sort of thing, but when we phoned the company we were told they didn't remove nests from chimneys until it could be confirmed that there were no living creatures in them. We called the pest control company with which we have an annual contract, but they didn't like the sound of the job and kept putting off the date they would come to check it out. Meanwhile the weather was getting colder. Ian had just dug the trench, and we asked him to take a look at it. We were away from home at the time, but Ian, who is totally trustworthy, has full access to the house. He told me on the phone that he and his helper had tried to dislodge the nest both from the basement and the roof, but it was unmovable, and he suggested that on our return, in a week or so, he would come back and break through a closet into the chimney at the level of the nest. He said it would probably make a great mess, so we might want to empty the closet ourselves before he started the work. We intended to get home mid-morning and we agreed to for him to come the afternoon of our return. Unfortunately, this was soon after Hurricane Sandy, and for one reason or another (we got sideswiped by a truck) it took us almost 12 hours to make the 1 1/2 hour drive from New York to our house. Ian had phoned me in the morning to ask when we'd arrive, because he was on his way over. After the accident (in which no one was injured) I phoned him to say I didn't know when we'd get there. He said that was okay, he was already at the house, and everything had been taken care of: they hadn't had to go in through the closet after all, they'd brought a better tool and this time did manage to break the nest down by poking up from the basement. There were no squirrels living in it; the nest had apparently been up there a long, long time, and he made sure no squirrels would return by putting a new grill over the chimney on top. When we returned home, we found the place a pleasure to return to, whatever mess Ian may have made had been cleaned up, the water and heat were on, he had watered all the plants and had even reset the clocks, since Daylight Savings Time had ended in our absence. Ian has done work for us for several years now, and this is my second review here. From our experience there's nothing he cannot do and everything he does he does perfectly.
Description of Work: Repair and make habitable a storm-ruined outbuilding converted into a guest-cottage/office, which included getting rid of a lot of rot, replacing the entire back wall of the building, putting step-flashing on the roof, putting on window shutters, leveling all doors. Digging a trench from the cottage to the main house and laying tubes for installation of phone/internet wires. Other services, in and around the main building, included ridding the furnace chimney flu of a squirrel's nest that was lodged in it, cleaning out the roof gutters, replacing rotten pickets on a picket fence, re-installing a split rail fence on the property and various minor repairs.

He was punctual and polite. He said he would come on a certain date, and they did. They arrived at 9 am each of the 5 days. He didn't ask for any money until the job was completed. they cleaned up after the job.We had waterproofing done last year and our walls and closet were now undone. They now look great. very satisfied
Description of Work: They finished the bathroom and basement walls and completed the closets with doors. He also offered to finish off the windows, and he didn't charge us.Also, while he was here, our bedroom toilet started to wobble a bit. he looked at it and fixed it without charging us.

I contacted this company and the owner was very responsive, absolutely friendly and pleasant. He came out, gave me an estimate and even creative ideas for what I needed. I emailed back to him that I wanted to go ahead with the work, but it's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard back. I'm disappointed because I really believe he could have done a good job. I'm always one to give a person the benefit of the doubt, he may have gotten jammed up and busy. But at this point, I'm not sure I can count on him to get back to me. I'll give it another week, but then I'll have to move on. If I hear back and he comes out to perform the work, I will re-post and let folks know how it went.

My partner and I have been using Best Carpentry regularly since Ian, who IS the company, was first suggested to us by the owner of a hardwood flooring company which we found through Angie's List and which, in July, 2010, did an excellent job putting in a new kitchen floor. We were looking for someone to perform a number of basically carpentry jobs large and small. I called Ian who came over a day or two later with an assistant, checked out the various things we wanted done, then a few days after that sent an estimate that was so low it was almost laughable. We accepted it at once and asked him how soon he could start. About a week later Ian and his assistant returned to do the work, which at that time consisted of reshingling the back door overhang, rewalling and repainting the wine cellar, and building a kitchen bookcase which a friend had designed for us several years earlier, the three most immediate things on our list. Ian suggested that instead of replacing the old wine cellar walls and ceiling with wallboard, which had been there originally, he put in and paint wood walls and a wood ceiling. At the same time he called some cracks in a basement support beam to our attention and suggested he strengthen the beam with two long 8" x 2" boards, and also put a railing on the steps down to the basement, which was in bad need of one. We accepted both suggestions at once, and also asked him to put a railing on the back kitchen staircase. We then accepted his offer to silverline our front porch roof for a very low fee as soon as all the other work was done. Ian and his assistant worked quietly and efficiently, which was in itself something of a novelty for us; so many contractors we'd had (the flooring company excepted) had banged around noisily and preferred shouting to each other to talking. Furthermore, the last contractor we'd had had left a bunch of details unfinished. Ian did the work we asked him to, and did it beautifully, and brought it to completion in less than a week. He also completed a few little jobs the other contractor had left undone. For some time we'd been thinking of redoing the bay window in the dining room, where a lot of the wood seams were rotting. We'd had other contractors in and they'd all given us estimates that ran to between five and ten thousand dollars, telling us we had to replace the whole custom-made structure. Once Ian had completed his other work, we asked him to take a look at the window and give us an estimate. He examined it inside and out, and told us he saw no reason to replace more than the window seat, if we could live with some vapor between the double panes (which we easily could). He could dig out all the rot, reline the whole window, replace the window seat and repaint the whole thing for under $1,000. That was truly an offer we couldn't refuse. So while we were away one week he did that job (we so trust him that we have no problem giving him access to the house when we're not there). Last Christmas, after a snowstorm, a young man swerved his car to avoid a deer and hit the landmark dollhouse at the front of our property, where we put out our garbage for collection. All the walls had caved in, many trimmings were knocked off, and the whole little house was crooked on its base. The young man's father contacted us to say he'd pay for the repairs. We called Ian to find out how much it would cost to fix the dollhouse once the weather warmed up. He came over a few days later, and once again gave us a derisory price to do it. We assumed the whole job would be upwards of $3,000. We were amazed when he said he would charge just a little over $1,000. A few weeks later that same dollhouse was hit a second time, this time by persons unknown. We called Ian back. The little house was very badly damaged and we knew we'd have to swallow any additional costs. But Ian told us he could still do the repairs for the price he had given us originally, which is what he did, in the first week of April. Ian is unquestionably one of the best workers we've dealt with, as far as we're concerned we've found a carpenter for life, and it's a pleasure to have someone like him on call.
Description of Work: Reshingled the overhang to the back entrance of our 165-year-old farmhouse; put new walls and a new ceiling in our wine cellar, and repainted them; built and painted a bookcase and decorative shelf in the kitchen, which ties in beautifully with the design of the house, an old Victorian; redid and repainted the bay window in the dining room, which was rotting at the seams; put railings up on two staircases; strengthened a support beam; silverlined the front porch roof; repaired some missing boards on the deck and repainted them; put gates on the three entrances of the deck (to keep the dog from running out); restored to its original look a trash-holding shed at the front of the property which is a dollhouse model of the big house and a landmark in our area. It had been hit by a car that swerved in the snow to avoid a deer.
