Description of Work: We have a service contract with ARS which provides a pre-season check and clean/service for our furnace and air conditioner. This visit was to service the Furnace, though he also checked the air conditioner. The media filter was replaced ($55) and we had them install a VZPro Surge Protector ($140). Furnace was cleaned and he sealed air leaks around the filter. ARS initiates the apointment at the appropriate time of year for the service.

I was extremely dissatisfied.
Description of Work: Our furnace stopped working so they came out to look at it. They claimed it was because of stink bugs that were jammed in there so they wanted to sell us a new furnace. We contacted someone else to look at it and it turned out it was just a switch that was bad; it only cost us $80 to get fixed.

Response from ARS / Rescue Rooter Pittsburgh
1. The technician did find many, many stink bugs in the furnace, and those bugs have ruined many furnaces in our area. 2. You are an American Home Shield warranty customer. A new furance only costs you $60.00. It doesn't matter to you if you get your furnace repaired or preplaced - it costs you the same thing ($60.00). We only try to sell a new furnace when a customer needs it. 3. All you had to do was call us (or American Home Shield) and tell us you were dissatisfied and we would have sent someone else out at no charge to you. 4. This call was from FEBRUARY 3, 2011 and it is now AUGUST 16, 2012 5. An F? For a $60 charge?

Description of Work: They came to fix the AC. It then went out again so we contacted American Home Shield and they sent me another company. That company found the issue with the condenser. Overall, ARS was a good service.

Description of Work: replaeced 4,000 ton A/C Unit, replaced air blower moter and related shaft & wheel. Do's - I would recomment ARC. They were best bid of 4 companies and they were honest and professional. Don't - I learned not to "tell" professionals what is wrong. The 1st A/C guy I talked to said replace existing and I then told every one else I needed replacement. Not so. I could have gotten by with a $710 repair. I leaarned to "ask for help, and not tell pro's what's the problem. Let them tell you. Our A/C "froze up" last Sept 2011 during very hot (+90F) weather. I called an A/C guy recommended to me by a friend. He charged $89.00 to come to my house and look at my A/C problem. His recommendation was to replace my air conditioner because it was 20 years old and not worth fixing. I did not replace in 2011. A/C unit worked fine until the July 2012 heat hit 90F+ and then my A/C unit "froze up again". I called the same guy back to give me an estimate on replacement. He did. Then I decided to get a second bid. I used Angie's List to identify 3 and got quotes. ARC had the best bid. ARC offered me the name brand unit I wanted (my first A/C guy carried only ThermoStar). ARC sent three professionals to examine and evaluate my problem. Root cause was a bad blower motor. We learned this "after" I told ARC to replace my 20 year old Carrier A/C unit. My bad. Once the new A/C unit was installed it would not work because the blower motor on the air mover was still faulty. DOH! ARC fixed that in short order but the 3rd guy - the repair guy - told me what the real issue with my A/C unit freezing up.

Description of Work: Furnace issues apx 5 weeks after the unit was routine-serviced by ARS. They returned and found expensive issue not found during servicing. Without heat in cold winter, part came in later, and then was not the right part to correct the issue. More expensive part to be ordered and to be checked for under-warranty. Waited it out in the cold. ARS got back that part wasn't under warranty. Got second opinion, and next company was absolutely wonderful. Part in question was under warranty after all and was installed by second company pronto. Second company found another part was needed and got that for me under warranty also at no cost to me. After many calls, ARS agreed to refund money paid for initial servicing (apx $300 which is all I paid). They blamed Lenox dealer for the warranty error. Had to wait a few more weeks for the check. Check was made out to me and my son?? (who has never lived with me since my move years ago), so it could not be cashed. ARS said second check was in mail. Did not arrive and I called. They said it came back as they didn't put a stamp on it. Finally, got the good refund check. Their error would have cost me apx $2000 (for a new furnace) if I hadn't gotten a second opinion. Their price for a new furnace was less than the cost of paying the cost of the new part, which they had said wasn't under warranty. I thought after their first mess-up they would be really careful but that wasn't the case. It took a lot of effort on my part to resolve this.

Response from ARS / Rescue Rooter Pittsburgh
The member called us in February to inspect her furnaces. We spent over two hours performing maintenance on both pieces of equipment. Approximately five weeks later she called us with a no-heat situation. This situation does happen occasionally, the same way it does when you take your car to get the oil changed and five weeks later the brakes need to be changed. A routine service call will not catch everything. When the member called us for the no-heat situation, we responded the same day to repair her heat. The technician diagnosed the problem and we contacted Lennox to order the part. Please keep in mind that we are not a Lennox dealer – we are a Carrier, Goodman and Rheem dealer. That doesn’t mean we can’t repair Lennox furnaces – it just means that Lennox has to provide us with warranty information, because we don’t have it. We contacted Lennox and spoke with Jolene. She told us that the warranty on the member’s furnace had expired. If we install the furnace, we have information on it, but if another company installs it, we have to rely on the manufacturer, which we did in this situation. When the member informed us that another company had replaced the part under warranty, we offered to refund her money. The check was written to her son Christopher because that was the name on the account in our computer system and our company policy is to refund to the name listed in the computer. At some point we had to have spoken to her son. How else would we have gotten his name? She called and asked for the check to be re-issued and we did. Unfortunately, it was mailed without a stamp, and several days later the post office returned it to us. We promptly sent it out again with postage on it. We received a call, responded promptly to the call, diagnosed the problem, contacted the manufacturer, contacted the customer, and then sent the refund check to the customer. The only thing that we were guilty of was sending out a check without a stamp on it. We apologize for that error. While these events were frustrating for the member, they are not worthy of a “D” rating. We’ve been in business for over 70 years and take pride in our work, as evidenced by our high ratings on both the BBB and Angie’s list web sites.

Description of Work: A/C wasn't working well during hot week. They came out under our American Home Shield plan. Tech said A/C was OK. Less than a week later our A/C died, just before Memorial Day weekend. We called and they refused to come out until after the three-day weekend. On the day they were scheduled to return, I learned one of the managers had informed AHS they would not service us. Temps were over 90 degrees the whole weekend. A second HVAC service came out that Monday and replaced an old, original capacitor. They said ARC should have advised replacing it--they had not. It was an $80 ten minute job. Yet ARC had not caught the problem and refused to stand behind their work. Then they stiffed us by refusing to service our unit because we had asked if they stood behind their work. Of course, no refund was offered. To add insult to injury, in their response, ARS has no excuse for their shoddy customer treatment, but rather untruthfully slanders the reporter! What does that tell you? By the way, we practically begged them to return because of the extremely high heat, but they insisted they could not reutrn for over a week! That's quite a "guarantee" they have!

After reviewing your account, I can see where we were called out for the initial visit and you paid the $60 deductible. We did receive a second work order which was to be no charge to you for additional air conditioning issues that were not resolved on the first visit. When we attempted to contact you to schedule the work, you screamed at our representative and then hung up on her. Please tell me how we are to come out and fix anything when you won’t communicate with us? We have been in business for 70 years and do not run from anyone. Had you given us a chance to come back out, we would have fixed the problem at no cost to you. We guarantee all of our work and have yet to find a no cooling situation that we could not fix. And by the way, the name of our company is ARS, not ARC
